THE BRONCO HIGHLIGHTS KEY WWPA MATCH-UPS The 10th week of the collegiate water polo season in the Western Water Polo Associaon was a light one with just 11 games on the week. Week #11 will be a different story as the 2011 Bronco hosted by SAnTA CLARA will feature seven of the nine conference teams playing in 11 WWPA contests. All told every team will be in acon with 13 of the 23 games on the week WWPA match-ups. For the 11 games last week, LMU played in three of them, including a tripleheader at the Burns Aquacs Center with conference foes SAnTA CLARA and CAL STATE SAn BERnARDIno. The Lions swept the two games thanks to eight goals from junior Kimberly Benede, who has been named the WWPA Women’s Player of the Week for April 6. The two-meter specialist finished with four goals in the 13-5 win over the Coyotes and four more in the 11-6 win over Santa Clara. She added a goal in the Lions game at No. 13 UC Irvine to finish the week with nine goals, nine kickouts drawn and two steals. In the other match-up, Santa Clara defeated CSUSB 8-4 thanks to a five-goal effort from Taylor Harkins. CAL STATE EAST BAy snapped a three-game losing streak with a pair of wins on Saturday at Cal State Mon- terey Bay. The 10th week of the collegiate water polo season in the Western Water Polo Association was a light one with just 11 games on the week. 8-3 WWPA) posted a 14-6 victory over Concor-dia (Irvine), led by sophomore Claire Pierce’s six goals and goalie Jayme Pekarske’s 12 saves. East Bay then knocked off conference foe Cal State Monterey Bay, 11-6, thanks to three goals from Erica Crain, another pair from Pierce and two from freshman Sarah Grunberger. Pierce fin-ished the weekend with eight goals, while Pekarske posted 20 stops and both Grunberger and Tristan Kennedy-Donohue notched three goals apiece.

Pierce is one of many WWPA performers ranking high na-tionally among the stats lead-ers. Pierce is second in the na-tion while leading the WWPA with 75 goals. Setting right behind Pierce is Misty Vu of Cal State San Bernardino with 69 goals. Vu is second in the WWPA and third nation-ally. Rounding out the top five scorers in the WWPA is Taylor Hanson of Cal State Bakers-field with 56 goals, Hanalei Crowell of UC San Diego and Jessica Browning of Bakers-field with 44 goals. Benedetti of LMU, Emily Hove of CSUSB and Kirsten Bates of UCSD are tied at sixth with 43 goals.

On the defensive side, Cal State San Bernardino’s Bry-anna Bruns leads the league with 348 saves in playing over a thousand minutes on the season. Jayme Perkarske of East Bay is second with 266 and Megan Pezzolla of CSUB is third with 226.
