Allour hard work through winter andspring shows, as the vines racetoward the sun and the fowersturn into grape clusters. Its oneo the sweetest smells when theentire vineyard is in bloom. I loveto stand among the vines and takein all the possibilities to comeover the next six months: armsacross the East End bringing reshproduce to market; tasting roomsbustling with live music, wine-and-

ood pairings and plenty o activi-ties or all ages.

Summer is a great time to kickback and enjoy the ruits o our la-bors dining out at the great res-taurants, strolling the shops or just

Someone asked me the otherday what the next 30 years mighthold or the Long Island wineregion. It was a very good ques-tion, considering all the economic

uncertainty. I thought or a mo-ment, and then I said, The uturelooks great! Why? Our wines havereceived a great deal o recogni-tion over the last 30 years. Our

vineyards have matured; winemak-ing techniques have allowed us tomake better decisions; and we un-derstand what we can do with the

ruit under certain weather condi-tions. We now allow the vineyardsto make the wine.

Ive also been thinking aboutthe changes in our consumer base.

We now have the X Factor, orGeneration X. There are some 78million o them, outnumbering theBaby Boomers by 6 million. The

X actor is huge because o theirappetite or trying new wines. Allthe people that age Ive met areso happy that wine is in their ownbackyard and that its only a shorttrip to the North and South orks.

Yes, times have changed rom 30 years ago. For some o us changeisnt easy but, growing up with thecommunity, it seems to have madea real economic di erence orthe better. Theres been increas-ing enthusiasm or the growth o our industry and Im proud to bea part o shaping the past and the

uture. With the passage o time also

comes heartache. Over the years, weve lost some o the oundingmembers o this great region. OnMay 16, we lost a good riend,Ralph Pugliese, owner o Pugliese

Vineyards. Ralph was one o thepioneers o the Long Island wineindustry and helped to shape it.Ralph had such a great smile. Hetaught me how to make the bestlinguine and clam sauce always

with local clams and o course,some great wine. His generous

ways, jovial laugh and positive atti-tude will be missed. Its now up tothe next generation to take chargeand lead us into the next 30 years.

Id like to li t my glass to all who have passed and to all whoare present. Thank you or makingLong Islands East End so special.Salute!
