Welcome...

At Tiffi n University, our students endeavour to excel in both the classroom and the athletic arena. Our athletic pro-grams have enjoyed tremendous success in recent years with conference championships, teams being nationally ranked and challenging at national tournaments. There have been numerous individual ac-colades including All-Americans, and it is no small accomplishment that in the past few years we have set new standards of excellence with our individual and team academic achievements. We expect our student-athletes to be just as successful in the classroom. A recent self study con-ducted by the university indicated that, of all the athletes who completed their eligibility at Tiffi n Uni-versity in the last fi ve years, 95% of those athletes graduated. While many colleges would be ecstatic with these results, we will never be content until it is 100%. We are proud of our rich history and look forward to setting new milestones as we enter the NCAA Division II playing fi eld and the highly competitive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. We are proud of our athletes and what they have accomplished. They have been the force behind the winning tradition that has been established, and I am confi dent the future will also be highly successful for Tiffi n University athletics.

Jeff Nickerson enters his third season as Head Coach of the Drag-ons.

Nickerson, who has a career mark of 224-171, posted a 34-18 record in 2010, helping lead the Lady Dragons to the NCAA National Tournament in just his second season. Prior to coming to Tiffi n, he had head coaching stints at Presbyterian College in South Carolina and Ohio Northern University.

During his three-year tenure at Presbyterian College, he compiled an overall mark of 108 wins against 69 losses, including a 24-18 record within the South Atlantic Conference (SAC). Nickerson led the Lady Blue Hose to a school record 48 wins during his fi rst year, guiding the program to its fi rst-ever SAC Tournament Championship and their fi rst appearance in the NCAA Division II Regional Tournament in 2004 where they fell in the Regional Championship. He earned SAC and National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) South Atlantic Region Coach of the Year honors in 2004, while coaching nine all-conference players, in-

cluding the 2005 SAC Freshman of the Year and an NFCA All-South Atlantic Region player in 2006.

During his time at Ohio Northern, Nickerson built the softball program from one with a losing season his fi rst year to recording two straight 20-win seasons in 2002 and 2003. He got his start at ONU as an assistant coach during the 2000 season before being named interim head coach in 2001. He assumed the full-time position after the 2001 season. He also was an assistant softball coach at Capital University and Cortland State Univer-sity in New York.

Nickerson graduated cum laude from Cortland State Uni-versity in Cortland, New York with a Bachelors of Sci-ence degree in Physical Education in 1998. He earned his Masters in Developmental Kinesiology with an emphasis in Physical Education in 2001 from Bowling Green University in Bowling Green, Ohio. 2011 Dragons Softball Preview Last year the Dragons fi nished 34-18 and qualifi ed for the NCAA tourney for the fi rst time in school history. They fi nished the year ranked 7th in the Midwest Region and posted a 16-10 GLIAC record along with an impressive 11-2 home mark. The Dragons have reason for optimism entering the season as they have lost only 3 letterwinners and one starter from that group. Overall the Dragons return 15 letterwinners and 8 positional starters along with three returning starting pitchers. Leading the returners is senior fi rst baseman Tiffany Smith, who earned All-GLIAC honors by hitting .373 with 13 HR and 60 RBI. Lauren Mazzuca was third in batting with a .319 mark and a team-high 44 runs scored and 4 triples and also earned All-GLIAC selection. On the left side of the infi eld, All-Region and All-Conference standout Amanda Temple returns at third base after leading the team

with a blistering .429 mark. Meagan Baird also returns at shortstop after an All-GLIAC season in which she hit .266. At catcher, Lesy Herbert (.264) returns and will be joined by talented freshman Caitlin Houk, who batted .455 last year while earning First Team All-Ohio honors. The two players will share time behind the dish and also trade duties at DP along with newcomer Torrie Terry (two-time All-District). In the outfi eld, Melodi Murrieta (.203) and Alyssa Brown (.315) will share time in left fi eld, while Stephanie Bo-botas (.255) and Jessie Creakbaum (.267) will handle duties in center fi eld and right fi eld, respectively. Newcomer Katie Toomey (.400, All-State) will also see action in the outfi eld mix. The Dragons’ three returning starting pitch-ers will be joined by a talented freshman, giving TU good depth on the mound. Abbey Cooksey (13-6, 3.72 ERA, 25 games) will lead the pack, followed by Amber Young (8-6, 4.24 ERA, 24 games) and Kelly Mayer (9-4, 4.36 ERA, 21 games) as all three pitchers loaded up on experience last season.

The trio will be joined by Mindy Meredith, a two-time First Team All-Ohio hurler who compiled a 62-12 prep record while also winning a state championship during her career. Three times she amassed a sub-1.00 ERA during her career. The Dragons will play a strong non-conference schedule before jumping into GLIAC play, taking on tough opponents such as Lock Haven, Wisconsin-Parkside, Caldwell, CW Post, and Minnesota-Duluth. Getting off to a strong start is critical for the Dragons this season. “If we can get off to a strong start, the region rankers will take notice and rank you accordingly,” said Head Coach Jeff Nickerson. “We want to make our mark early because it is much harder to climb into the rankings later in the season. We want to make our mark early and keep it rolling into GLIAC play.” Tiffi n’s chief competition in conference play will be Wayne State, Ashland, and Saginaw Valley State.

The Diamond of the Dragons

Tiffi n University enjoys playing its home games at the Tiffi n University Athletic Complex. One of many recently developed facilities on display, the Diamond of the Dragons is a new and at-tractive addition to the softball fi elds of the American Mideast Conference. With capacity for 500, a separate junior varsity fi eld, enclosed bullpens, and a large outfi eld electronic scoreboard, the fi eld offers the Tiffi n University softball team a great place to call home. The fi eld is just 1.5 miles from the Tiffi n University campus and resides on 78 acres of land that also house all the outdoor athletics teams at TU. The fi elds, which debuted in the fall of 1997, also include a baseball fi eld, two soccer fi elds, and two football practice fi elds. Also new to the fi elds is Tiffi n University’s Athletic Fieldhouse. In addition, there is expanded parking accomodating hundreds of vehicles.

Share the Pride, Build on Traditionis a $12 million comprehensive campaign designed to create endowed student scholarships, construct the new recreation center, and make other campus improvements. These enhancements, coupled with recent investments in new student apartments, the Tiffi n University Nature Preserve, Paradiso Athletic Complex, and the Miami Street Improvement Project, will result in a total investmentby Tiffi n University of more than $30 million in the Tiffi n community.

Campaign ObjectivesRecreation Center$9,400,000The Recreation Center will consist of two connected buildings: a fi eld house and an indoor practice facility. The connector will include a lobby and locker room facilities.

Other Campus Development$1,600,000Over the past several decades, TU has created a campus that not only refl ects the University’s own growth and success, but also en-hances the appearance and economic well being of the City of Tiffi n. To continue pursuing the campus master plan, TU seeks $1.6 million for land acquisition, landscaping, parking and others amenities.
