TrendyOSU has earned a berth in the NCAA

Women’s Soccer Championship in each of thelast five years and has made six tourneyappearances in the program’s 15-year history.

The Cowgirls have advanced to at least thesecond round of the tourney each of the lastfive years, including a march to the Elite Eightin 2010, and are 6-3-4 all time in NCAA play.

Four PlayOSU has won four consecutive Big 12

Conference championships and has capturedfive conference titles in the last nine seasons— three tournament (2003, ’09, ’10) and tworegular season (2008, ’11).

Eyeing A Three-PeatOSU is attempting to become only the sec-

ond team to win three-straight Big 12 SoccerChampionship titles, joining Nebraska, whowon the tourney in 1998, 1999 and 2000.

Moving On UpOSU entered last week ranked No. 2 in the

NSCAA/Continental Tire poll for the seventhconsecutive week. That matches the Cowgirls’highest-ever national ranking.

The Cowgirls’ previous high ranking wasNo. 4, which they reached on Sept. 6. Theyhave been ranked in the top five for nine-straight weeks.

Home Sweet HomeOSU is 10-0-1 in 2011 at the Cowgirl

Soccer Complex. The Cowgirls sport a 40-3-1record on their home field since 2008.

Seniors RuleOSU’s 2011 senior class (Brown, DeLozier,

Dougherty, Lopez, Mercado, Niemeier andTreadwell) is the fourth-winningest senior classin the nation. Over the last three-plus years,the Cowgirls own a 70-12-10 (.815) record.The 70 wins are the most among Big 12schools during that span.

Second To OneWith its 37-4-4 record, OSU owns the sec-

ond-most wins in the nation over the last twoseasons. The Cowgirls’ win total trails onlyStanford, which is 41-1-3 over the span.

Hermann WatchFor the fifth-straight year, OSU placed a

player on the Missouri Athletic Club’s HermannTrophy Watch List as senior defender MelindaMercado and junior goalie AD Franch bothmade the 42-player list.

The Hermann Trophy is considered thehighest individual honor in collegiate soccer.

Franch was one of 15 semifinalists for the2010 Hermann Trophy. Yolanda Odenyo(2008) is the only other Cowgirl semifinalist.

Four StarsOSU had four players named to the 2011

Preseason All-Big 12 Team — forwards KristaLopez and Kyndall Treadwell, defenderMelinda Mercado and goalie AD Franch. Eachof those players earned All-Big 12 First Teamhonors in 2010.

Shutouts and ScoresOSU has established itself as one of the

top defensive programs in the country. TheCowgirls have led the Big 12 in shutouts infour of the last five seasons (2006, 2007,2009, 2010), and they recorded 56 shutouts in119 games during that span — not to mentiontheir league-best 14 in 19 games this season.

The Cowgirls don’t just thrive on defense.They’ve also led the Big 12 in goals scored intwo of the last three seasons (74 in ’08 and 52in ’10) and are currently third in the leaguewith 42 goals this season.

Making HistoryOSU is coming off a 2010 season that saw

it embark on a magical postseason run as theCowgirls captured their second-straight Big 12Soccer Championship title before their deep-est-ever NCAA tourney run, during which theyadvanced to the Elite Eight. OSU finished theseason with a 20-4-2 record, which includedan 8-2-0 mark and second-place finish in thealways tough Big 12 Conference.

THE CARMICHAEL FILE

If you are looking for a blueprint of how to build a collegiate soc-cer program into a national contender, Oklahoma State head coachColin Carmichael would be a good place to start.

Carmichael has been at OSU since the inception of the women’ssoccer program in the fall of 1996, and he continues to help leadCowgirl soccer to new heights.

OSU is in the midst of the most successful stretch of seasons inprogram history, and as the program enters its 16th season, theCowgirls are looking to build on the greatest season in its history inCarmichael’s seventh year at the helm.

Carmichael, who served as OSU’s co-head coach with KarenHancock during the 2005 and 2006 seasons, is 94-27-17 during hissix-year tenure as the Cowgirls’ head coach, compiling a winning per-centage of .743. He has led the Cowgirls to five consecutive appear-ances in the NCAA Soccer Championship (2006-10). After advancingto the second round four-straight years, the Cowgirls had a magicaltourney run in 2010 as they advanced to the Elite Eight before fallingto eventual national champion Notre Dame.

The Cowgirls have also been a dominant force in the Big 12Conference under Carmichael as they are the three-time defendingleague champion. OSU won the regular season title in 2008 and haswon the Big 12 Soccer Championship each of the last two years.

The 2010 season saw OSU set a school record for wins as theyfinished 20-4-2, which also earned the Cowgirls their highest-ever finalranking in the national polls at No. 5 in the NSCAA poll.

In a year that saw OSU tie a school record with a 13-gameunbeaten streak and lead the Big 12 in goals and goals against aver-age, Carmichael was named the 2010 Big 12 Conference Co-Coachof the Year and the NSCAA/Mondo Central Region Coach of the Year.

Broken RecordJunior goalkeeper AD Franch set OSU’s

career shutouts record against Oklahoma,notching her 22nd shutout in just her 51stcareer game. Erin Stigler, whose recordFranch broke, had 21 shutouts in 64 gamesfrom 2005-08.

Franch led the Big 12 in shutouts in eachof her first two collegiate seasons, setting anOSU record with 11 as a freshman and thenrecording nine a year ago. She has eight in 13games this season.

Broken Record, Pt. IIKrista Lopez set a pair of OSU records in

the win over UALR. She recorded four goalsagainst the Trojans to become the first Cowgirlin history to score four goals in a single game.Lopez broke the previous mark of three, whichshe held with nine other players. Lopez, whowas the first Big 12 player to record four goalsin a match since 2009, also set OSU’s single-game record by collecting eight points.

Lopez notched the hat trick with threegoals in the opening half against the Trojans,then added her record-setting fourth just overfive minutes into the second half.

With eight goals this season, Lopez hasmoved into fifth place all time at OSU with 27career goals, and she ranks seventh on theCowgirls’ career points list with 69.

Four Score Seniors Annika Niemeier, Krista Lopez and

Kyndall Treadwell, along with junior MeganMarchesano, have combined for 83 goals and56 assists during their careers.

Niemeier, Lopez and Treadwell each ranksamong the top 10 on OSU’s career goals,assists and points lists.

Balanced AttackThe Cowgirls have recorded 42 goals by 12

different players in 2011, and 11 different play-ers have notched assists.

Statistically SpeakingOSU leads the Big 12 in shutouts (14),

goals allowed (5), goals against average (0.26)

and corner kicks (142) and is second in shots(350).

Individually, Krista Lopez is tied for the Big12 lead with four game-winning goals and isfifth with eight goals and 21 points, while ADFranch sits atop the league statistics in goalsagainst average (0.23) and save percentage(.945) and is second with eight shutouts.

Entering last week, in the NCAA statistics,OSU ranked second nationally in goals againstaverage and save percentage and fourth inshutout percentage and winning percentage,while Franch ranked second in save percent-age and third in goals against average.

11 & 14OSU set a school record for consecutive

wins when it earned its 11th-straight victorylast month vs. Utah State. The previous recordwas 10, which the Cowgirls achieved in 2003.

With its win over Oklahoma in Sept., OSUset the mark for the longest unbeaten streak inschool history at 14. The Cowgirls had twoprevious 13-match unbeaten streaks — in a2010 stretch when they went 12-0-1 and the13-game span to open the 2003 season duringwhich they went 11-0-2.

It’s AcademicOSU’s success on the pitch has carried

over to the classroom. OSU had a program-record 13 players named to the 2010Academic All-Big 12 First Team, and theCowgirls also earned the NSCAA TeamAcademic Award for the ninth-straight year.
