MapleBlues March 2011 3

Congratulations to Buddy Guy, Pinetop Perkins and Willie "Big Eyes" Smith on their Grammy awards and also to the winners of this year's International Blues Challenge: 1st Place: The Lionel Young Band (Colorado Blues Society); 2nd Place: The Mary Bridget Davies Group (Kansas City Blues Society); 3rd Place: Rob Blaine's Big Otis Blues (Windy City Blues Society). Rob also won the Best Guitarist Award which is a custom Gibson 335 and a Category 5 amp. Stephane Bertolino won the first ever Best Harmonica Player Award presented by Lee Oskar. Stephane is in the French band AWEK, sponsored by Blues Sur Seine. The Solo/Duo winners were: 1st Place: George Schroeter & Marc Breitfelder, from Germany, sponsored by Baltic Blues. 2nd Place: Harrison Kennedy, representing Canal Bank Shuffle in Ontario, Canada. Other Canadians who participated were Michael Jerome Browne, Carlos del Junco & The Blues Mongrels, Theresa Malenfant & The Instigators, Rick Taylor and Al Wood & TheWoodsmen.

Canadian Blues meets American Folk in Memphis: Hot on the heels of Harrison Kennedy's 2nd place in the International Blues Challenge in Memphis (as well as memorable performances by David Rotundo, Al Wood, The Blues Angels, Michael Jerome Browne & Rick Taylor), that great music town was humming with Canadian blues & roots at the annual Folk Alliance conference two weeks later. Treasa Levasseur was showcasing with her full band (and then some) and TBS board member Suzie Vinnick was omnipresent at numerous showcases and jams including a workshop with Toronto ex-pat Colin Linden. Even our (barely) managing editor enjoyed his "15 minutes of fame" showcasing in a hotel room accompanied by guitarist Mark Goldenberg, long-time accompanist for Jackson Browne.

TV Blues: Veteran Hamilton blues band Trickbag, got a shot in the arm when its song Susanna (off the band's latest CD Tricknology) was used on One Tree Hill. "The exposure should be good," says Trickbag guitarist Larry Feudo, who is not a big watcher of TV, "I understand the show is quite popular and has won some awards." No kidding. The show has been on eight seasons, with three compilation CDs released under its name. Artists include Sheryl Crow, Dashboard Confessional, Band of Horses and Calexico. (From Hamilton Spectator music writer Graham Rockingham).

Blues In The Schools: The Great Lakes Blues Society (GLBS), in cooperation with numerous community supporters, is pleased to present another chapter in our "Blues In The Schools" (BITS) series of learning through the

arts programming. Blues is the foundation for all of the popular music styles we listen to today. Each year, the GLBS provides these educational performances for local schools at absolutely no charge. The GLBS will once again present Reverend Robert B. Jones, an accredited blues historian who has been recognized by The Blues Foundation in Memphis, Tennessee for his lifetime of work in music history education. After one of Rev. Jones' performances, Terry

The Johnny Max Band will be part of a two-day JunoFest celebration at the Delta Chelsea on March 25-26 and will also appear on the Canadian Music Week showcase at the Silver Dollar Room, Saturday, March 12th. The JMB has garnered a second Juno nomination for their album It's A Long Road (other Blues nominees are Harry Manx, The Sojourners, Fathead and Jim Byrnes). The band was also honoured with three Maple Blues Award nominations and a nomination in this year's Indie Awards (other Indie Award blues nominees are Downchild, Matt Andersen, Shakura S'Aida and Shrimp Daddy). The Indie Awards will be presented on March 12th and the Junos will be on March 29th at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto (watch on CTV). Johnny will be lacing up his skates for the legendary Juno Cup hockey game as well. His radio show, Sunday Morning Soul, is on Sunday Mornings on The Haze FM (www.thehazefm.ca) at 11am, repeating Wednesday evenings at 10pm.

McManus (Fanshawe College Music Industry Arts Professor) had this to say, "Rev. Robert Jones delivered a spiritual journey through the roots of North American music. His time-lines and the use of period instrumentation brought the story home to my students." In addition to his school performances, Rev. Robert Jones will perform at the London Music Hall Lounge on March 8, 2011 at 8pm. The Great Lakes Blues Society is a responsible music preservation group based in London that produces blues events throughout the calendar year. Each event is a fundraiser for BITS and/or a community partner. In their short history, they have raised more than $100,000 for local charities and invested more than $30,000 in their BITS programs.

The Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame announced their 2011 inductees, among them Robbie Robertson, formerly of The Band, and a couple of Canadian blues classic tunes will be enshrined in the Songwriters Hall of Fame: "Oh What a Feeling" by Kelly Jay/Roly Greenway and "When I Die" by Willie Smith/Steve Kennedy. The 2011 inductees will be honoured at the CSHF's 7th annual gala on Saturday, April 2, 2011, at the George Weston Recital Hall, Toronto Centre for the Arts. Shakura S'Aida Reporting: Twenty-seven Canadian acts have competed in the International Blues Challenge in the last two years, and Canadian blues artists have been finalists in each of the last four years. Are we experiencing a Canadian Blues Invasion? One of those Canadians

was Shakura S'Aida (who took second place in the competition) and in the latest issue of the Blues Revue Ezine she writes about the Canadian blues scene for all the American readers of Blues Revue. Here's an exerpt: "My blues are not about where I am from, but they are about where I have been – which we’re discovering isn’t so far from where everyone else has been. Yeah, it has been a long time coming, but you know what’s great? Now when I mention I’m from Canada there are no furrowed brows, tilted heads, or head nods. Well, not unless they’re saying “Hey, didn’t y’all just win at the International Blues Challenge again?! …When I came in second, I felt like I had won the gold medal at the 2010 Olympics with the Canadian women’s hockey team, minus the skates, mouthguard and really big under-padding. I knew anything was possible." Read the complete article at www.bluesrevue.com Shakura leaves in early March for her first Australian appearances, and then heads off for 13 shows in Europe.

Rest in Peace: The local blues scene lost two folks who figured prominently in building up a healthy blues scene in Toronto. Amy Louie was a successful realtor but her real passion was managing Grossman's Tavern where she cherished the time she got to spend with the musicians and clients at that venerable house of blues (yes, that's where Dan Aykroyd first heard Donnie and Hock Walsh, the original "blues brothers"). She passed away on February 1, after a life-long battle with congenital heart disease. Brian Wickham was remembered at a gathering of friends at his favourite haunt, The Duke of York. He was an avid blues fan and a regular contributor in the early days of the TBS newsletter, providing knowledgeable reviews of books that covered blues music. In fact, he would scour all the major bookstores in Toronto every month seeking out good deals to pass along to our readers. They will both be missed by their friends in the blues community.

The Kat Kings lead by guitarist/vocalist/songwriter, Kevin McQuade celebrate the release of their debut recording "The Winning Hand" at Dominion On Queen, 500 Queen St. E. Toronto on Sat. Mar.19th, 9:30pm. The 13 song disc was produced by Juno nominated Martin Alex Aucoin

Niagara Blues

Blues is alive and well in the Niagara Falls and St. Catharines region with blues matinees on Saturday and Sunday. Live blues music was played by the Odyssey Blues Band at the Lion in Port Dalhousie for many years. They have recently relocated just down the street to a new bar called The Street at 547 Ontario Street.

There is also the Golden Pheasant or "the Duck" as it is also known. It is located at 244 Ontario Street & features a smokin' hot house band led by Gary Kendall and like the Odyssey Blues Band they have a different featured guest every week. The other Saturday blues venue is in Niagara on the Lake and has the Niagara Rhythm Section playing (with special guest) every Saturday evening at The Old Winery restaurant. The NRS is in its 7th year and is serving up the blues at 2228 Niagara Stone Road.

A new venue that is dedicated to afternoon blues has now surfaced in downtown Niagara Falls. It is called The Niagara and the theme of the bar/restaurant is based around the movie the Niagara featuring Marilyn Monroe. New owner Mark DeMarco is optimistic the Sunday afternoon blues matinee will draw locals and tourists. " People that come to this place are overwhelmed with the food & decor ... but it is the great blues music that will keep them coming back," says DeMarco.

Rich and the Poor Boys host the Sunday afternoon show that allows other local blues musicians to sit in and that makes every week unique. " You never know who is going to drop by and play and that keeps the music fresh," says Rockin' Rich. "The local blues musicians in Niagara are very good. Last week we had 78 year old Don Little drop by and play some unbelievable blues guitar," he added.

So for blues fans there is no shortage of great live blues music in the Niagara area. Come out and support live blues and have a great time while you are doing it. We have got to keep live blues going strong and the best way is to come out and support the live venues. There are lots to choose from so tell a friend or make some new ones by supporting the blues.

LOOSE BLUES NEWS cont’d from p 9

T-Bone Little & Steve Burnside No Cover Charge (Prospect)

I usually think of Ronnie Hawkins & The Hawks as the Ground Zero of Toronto’s & indeed Southern Ontario’s music scene. Looking back, everything seems to build from that enormously influential band. We know though that there were performers who came before and who should be recognized: Curly Bridges, Frank Motley and Bobby Dean Blackburn come to mind, among many others. One of those others is Big John “T-Bone” Little. Born near Niagara Falls in 1929, Big John was performing country music on a local radio station in 1950 and when Elvis became popular, he joined the rock ‘n roll bandwagon. He had a band called The Hot Toddies and in 1959 recorded a song at a Buffalo radio station called “Rockin’ Crickets”. It was enough of a hit that it was stolen from him. He toured continuously, throughout the States and Eastern Canada, spending a lot of time in Quebec, writing songs & recording frequently but always on obscure labels. Steve Burnside started a few years later with a band based in the Falls called The Marquis. They recorded mostly for the Arc label (remember that one?) and recorded their own version of “Rockin’ Crickets” in 1966. They also toured constantly. Some fifty years on, the latest version of this band still works regularly in the Peninsula. Latterly, Big John has lived near St. John, New Brunswick but returns to The Falls in the summers. Last summer, these two old friends got together at The Crystal Chandelier in Crystal Beach and Steve arranged to record the proceedings. Aside from “The Ballad Of Big John (Hand Jive)”, the songs are well known to club audiences and get sterling performances from these seasoned veterans. Some highlights

are “Bring It On Home”, “Johnny B. Goode” and especially “Everyday I Have The Blues”, a lengthy showcase for the two guitarists. The band is spot on this evening, with Paul Mikoski on piano, Carl Slick on bass & Mikey Major on drums providing all the support they need. The ensemble is well recorded too, by former Marquis Mike Addario, not an easy task in a club. The camaraderie between the two veterans i s pa lpab le and I’m glad to have such a fine document. You can enquire about this CD at Steve Burnside’s web site, www.burnsidebluesband.com. I am also indebted to Brian Lee, a California radio host and researcher/compiler of www.colorradio.com/rockinrebels.htm for much information on Big John and the Niagara border scene in the fifties & sixties. He also did a very informative interview with Big John in 2008. I’m sure archivist Bill Munson has most, if not all, of Big John’s recordings as well as those of The Marquis, maybe they’ll see the light of day once more.

Derek Miller & Double Trouble Self

The First Nations guitarist/singer/actor has a new album that deserves rather more notice than it’s getting. He describes it on his web site as: ‘12 songs weaving a story of a man who has a blind moment of insanity and the events that led him down a dark murderous path.’ As the songwriting progressed the idea of using Double Trouble, Stevie Ray Vaughan’s rhythm section (& Johnny Winter’s before that) came up and was finalized. Willie Nelson was sufficiently impressed with the songs that he agreed to duet on the first single, “Damned If You Do”. Musically he describes his new effort as ‘Hillbilly Soul with some Mohawk/

Onondaga swagger.’ To that end he has largely forsaken the power trio sound of Dirty Looks and added horns, keys & backup singers. The songs do indeed carry everything along, with Miller’s vocals & guitars front and centre. This is very much his album and Double Trouble and Reese Wynans on keyboards help enormously in carrying out his concept. “Damned If You Do” is not particularly country sounding and it’ll be interesting to see how it does as a single. “Beautiful Girl”, “Trouble” & a heavily amplified version of Blind Willie Johnson’s “God Don’t Ever Change” are also among the highlights of this ambitious effort. A video for “Stoned For Days” uses San Francisco as a backdrop and is heavily influenced by the movie Bullitt. He has already garnered a Juno nomination in the Aboriginal category. The album seems only to be available through itunes so far with a link through his informative web site, www.derekmiller.ca.

The Kat Kings The Winning Hand Kool Kat

The Kat Kings is actually the man on the cover, Kevin McQuade, the leader, songwriter and singer/guitarist. You might also surmise from the cover that McQuade’s background is rockabilly and that sound does pervade the disc, although we could perhaps call it bluesabilly here. The rest of The Kat Kings are John Dymond on bass, Al Cross on drums and Martin Alex Aucoin on keys. Aucoin also produced and he has done a fine job. McQuade’s songs are very good indeed and Aucoin’s production puts them in their best light. “Tuffer Than Me” is a rocking set opener and should be released as a single. It has all the hallmarks of classic rockabilly without sounding in any way retro. Al Cross’s drumming is a delight, as it is throughout. “Let’s Get Greasy” rides on guitars and prominent organ, not much rockabilly here, just straight ahead rock. “Born In The Back Of A Cadillac” has a JJ Cale feel, with Aucoin switching to Wurlitzer and with a fine McQuade guitar solo. “Lucky Streak” is back to bluesabilly and

back to the gambling motif of the cover. The band sets up a fine second line for “Queen of The Mardi Gras”. “She’s No Good (She’s Just Good Lookin’)” starts off with an acoustic slide guitar before Cross’ drums come pounding in for this grinder, with excellent piano & guitar. In Kevin McQuade’s hands, this time-tested style has a new life. You can join him at the CD release party at the Dominion on Queen on March 19th.

Sabrina Weeks & Swing Cat Bounce Tales From Lenny’s Diner Self

Kamloops is the home base for this new quintet of veterans. Sabrina Weeks is a powerful vocalist with lots of stage presence. She and the band work in the west coast jump blues style pioneered by Powder Blues and hiring founding member Jack Lavin as producer guarantees they’ve got it right. They call their version ‘bouncing boogie blues’ and the disc starts off with “Boogie Downtown”, a rousing story of an outdoor gig that features horns, back up singers and piano. All but one of the songs were written by Sabrina & lead guitarist Mike Hilliard and song number two is a memorable one with Sabrina stating that if she had money for every poorly chosen relationship, she’d be rich. She doesn’t, of course, and all she has is “Fingers In My Pocket”. Etta James’ “Something’s Got A Hold of Me” is the only non-original and it gets a solid workout. There are a couple more songs about no good men, “Bad Boys” & “Detour” before a very good big band composition, “Ain’t My Time To Sing The Blues”. A first in blues songwriting in my experience is “Wrath Of Mom”, about a housewife who’s ready to explode. It’s a good song too. Bill White is the other guitarist, Ed Hilliard is on drums and Ken Sell on bass to round out the Swing Cat Bounce and special mention should go to Dave Webb for his keyboard work throughout. I hope they have the opportunity of leaving the Okanagan Valley & traveling to the East. The web site is www.swingcatbounce.com.

Various Artists Alligator Records 40th Anniversary Collection Alligator/Fontana North/Universal

The company’s motto is “Genuine Houserockin’ Music” and that’s what you get here: two generous disc’s worth, and for the price of one. It’s worth noting that there has been a celebration set every five years since the company’s 20th and that there is no duplication in these sets – even with five new years of material to choose from, not a bad indicator of the quality of the music Alligator releases. It’s also worth pointing out another aspect of this quality control that’s apparent to those of us who listen to many blues recordings, these songs are all carefully chosen, well thought out, fully rehearsed & well recorded, something not always considered important by other companies. The breadth of music is also apparent – the bulk of the catalogue, Koko Taylor, Albert Collins, Hound Dog Taylor, Son Seals are mainstream blues, and indeed have come to define mainstream blues, but artists like JJ Grey & Mofro and Anders Osborne are, in label president Bruce Iglauer’s words, ‘visionary roots artists’. Coming from a man steeped in the blues since his college days, this is a boast not to be taken lightly. As the delegates at the Blues Summit heard, if they didn’t know already, this label is not run by number crunchers. The sequencing is also a treat, where else can you hear Koko, Albert, Michael Burks, Tommy Castro and Lil’ Ed & The Blues Imperials, just to name the first six on disc one. Head to your CD store right away and get a first class ticket on your journey of the blues of today. Find out more, much more at www.alligator.com.
