Here are three easy steps to help youselect the right mower.

STEP 1: Determine your mowing andequipment needs.

Choosing the right lawn mower has a lot todo with how you will use it. Although lawnscome in all shapes and sizes, there arebasically three different applications for alawn mower.

1. Simple mowing and trimming –usually for small yards that are mownfrequently where no mulching orbagging is needed; may also apply tolarger lawns where the majority ofmore extensive cutting is handled by ariding mower.Equipment – Typically push mowers,side-discharge, limited functionality.

2. Small, manicured lawns – Well-tended lawns that are mownfrequently, where bagging andmulching are important.Equipment – push or self-propelledmowers, with full functionality, ease ofuse and convenient features.

3. Difficult mowing conditions – Areaswith hills, obstacles, large spaces,wet, thick or tall grass.Equipment – Rear-drive, self-propelled, fully functional, wide cut.

STEP 2: Determine your cutting power needs.

The more cutting power a lawn mower has,the more easily it will maintain the speed ofthe blade delivering a consistent, quality cut.Lower cutting power offers basic mowing ona budget. Once you decide how you will useyour mower, buy the mower with the greatestcutting power you can afford with thefeatures you need. Cutting power is acombination of three things – engine size,engine configuration, and mowerconfiguration.

Engine size – in combination with the engineconfiguration, the size of the engine is themost important factor in how the mowerhandles demanding jobs. Engine size ismeasured in ccs (or cubic centimeters). Themore ccs, the more cutting power the engine provides.

Engine configuration – lawn mowersequipped with engines designed withoverhead valves offer more power than thosewithout OHV engines regardless of size orconfiguration. OHV engines run moresmoothly and efficiently, and are quieter and better for the environment.

Mower configuration – the deck is the areaof the lawn mower that houses the blade. Thelarger the deck, the longer the blade and themore area you can cover with each pass. Alarger deck can reduce cutting time but mayrequire more power to be effective, so lookfor a larger OHV engine on a larger deck.

Bagging – a rear bag is easier to empty andmakes the mower easier to maneuver aroundobstacles. Both bagging and mulching requirea mower with more power, so if you areplanning to do either, look for a larger OHVengine.

STEP 3: Determine what type of moweris right for you.

Gas-Powered Mower• Great for tall, thick grass and

rough terrain.

• Combines yardwork with moderate exercise.

Self-Propelled Mower• Assisted by a drive train that

propels the mower.

• Reduces physical effort.

Electric/Cordless Mower• Lightweight, quiet, and nearly

effortless to start and maintain.

• Does not use gasoline or oil, whicheliminates harmful exhaust.

Front Wheel Drive (FWD)• Offers satisfactory traction on flat

terrain with shorter grasses. Allows theoperator to turn the mower withoutreleasing the transmission.

Rear Wheel Drive (RWD)• Offers superior traction on all terrains

and thick grass, even as the bag fillsor the operator guides the mower upan incline.

High Wheel or Low Wheel• If your lawn is relatively flat and

smooth, a low-wheel mower should beadequate to meet your needs. If you’llbe mowing over rough/uneven terrain,consider a high-wheel mower. Thelarger wheels will provide easiermaneuverability and make bumpseasier to manage.
