This past year, One Hope United continued to offer a diverse array of prevention, intervention and community-based services throughout Illinois, Missouri and Florida. Our services impacted 40,000 children and families through the collaboration of our regional staff, board members, volunteers, donors, corporate sponsors, community partners and more.

You may have noticed that the number of children and families impacted is significantly larger than previous years. This year we are taking into count the total number of children and family members we serve. While the child is our client, we create a safe and nurturing environment for them by strength-ening the entire family.

Our prevention programs helped families at risk for abuse and neglect • improve their ability to meet their children’s needs in a positive, healthy, nurturing way. More than 99 percent of these families experienced no substantiated reports of abuse or neglect last year.

Our 11 state-licensed child development centers provided accessible, • affordable, high-quality child care and early education services. More than 2,000 children in the Chicago area and its suburbs attended our early learning centers and surpassed all outcome goals for social/ emotional, physical, cognitive and language development.

OHU offered on-site and outreach counseling aimed at preserving families • and strengthening family functioning. 99 percent of the families served through OHU counseling programs remained safely together.

We provided intensive support to children and families with histories of • abuse or neglect, monitored their well-being and addressed risk factors. As a result, 95 percent of these families remained safely together.

Through youth services, we provided outreach and guidance to troubled • and delinquent adolescents and their families. Nearly 90 percent of youth served were deflected from further involvement with the juvenile justice system.

When the risk to a child from abuse and neglect was so great and the • family unit was deteriorated, we utilized placement services such as foster care, residential treatment and adoption. More than 2,900 children were served through placement services last year.

Together, we protected children and strengthened families while working towards our goal of providing safe and nurturing homes for all children. We could not do it without all of your dedicated support.

Sincerely,

Dear Friends,

In 1895, One Hope United Northern Region was founded as Chicago Baptist Orphanage in Downers Grove, Ill., by retired Baptist missionaries Rev. and Mrs. Scofield. In 1948, it moved to an idyllic campus in Lake Villa, Ill., which to this day houses One Hope United administrative offices and residential facility. Our locations and the scope of services have evolved through the years to include foster care, therapeutic services and early childhood development throughout northern Illinois.

One Hope United Hudelson Region was founded in 1903 as Hudelson Baptist Children’s Home in Ewing, Ill., by Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Gibbs and their daughter, Alice. Our locations and the scope of services offered have evolved through the years, expanding to include foster care, youth services and clinical services.

In 2001, One Hope United expanded our services to Florida dur-ing the state’s transition to child welfare privatization. Our pro-grams and services impact more than 11,000 children and families throughout central Florida each year. We value innovation and best practice and are strategic in our focus of services to at-risk fami-lies in Florida communities. In line with the promise of OHU, we promise our clients leadership, innovation, collaboration, results and most of all, hope!

Northern Region received re-Accreditation from the H

prestigious Council on Accreditation (COA). We were honored to be asked by the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) to provide in-service training to other agencies on how to up-grade and/or develop their quality improvement programs due to our success with COA.

The state-of-the-art, Silver LEED Certified, Aurora H

Early Learning Center opened in mid-September serv-ing at-risk children and their families. In addition, an expansion of our Bridgeport Child Development Center II doubled services for school-age children.

Eight OHU child development centers have received H

accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). The remaining three centers are in the process of earn-ing this status, which places OHU’s early education centers in an elite group of less than 10% of child development centers across the nation.

provides devoted human services impacting 26,000 at-risk children and families in northern Illinois.

Northern Region has a dual mission to educate, nourish and empower as well as protect children and strengthen families.

One Hope United Northern Region

Accomplishments

Throughout the last three years, OHU has imple- H

mented Strengthening Families initiatives through-out our early education programs for at-risk fami-lies. This strength-based family approach is now being implemented in programs across the agency.

Due to the highly successful results in OHU’s resi- H

dential treatment program, DCFS requested our agency expand our CARE residential program by more than 50 percent through the opening of a third home on the Lake Villa campus.

OHU expanded its Multi-Systemic Therapy (MST) H

programs for troubled youth in Kane County and began new MST programs in Kendall and DeKalb Counties. In addition, OHU implemented “Differ-ential Response,” a five-year demonstration project to promote early involvement with families at risk to prevent a more serious intervention in the future.

After School Matters awarded OHU funding to H

implement the Hope for the Future after-school pro-gram at our Kenwood Community Center.

provides a diverse array of human services impacting more than 8,400 children and families throughout central and southern Illinois and Missouri.

Hudelson Region remains devoted to our agency’s founding faith roots while staying steadfast to the mission of protecting children and strengthening families.

The Hudelson Region residential program expanded to H

serve 32 youth. More than $8,000 was raised for the resi-dential campus in Centralia after spring thunderstorms caused severe damage to our buildings and equipment.

Hudelson Region’s Circle of Hope Program in Springfield, H

Missouri entered the fifth year of our federal research grant. Families served in this program have been negatively affected by drugs or alcohol. Compared to traditional programs, fam-ilies involved with Circle of Hope have significantly higher success rates for family safety and children’s well-being.

During our 108th Annual Meeting, the agency presented H

12 William Hudelson Community Partnership Awards to dedicated supporters of the agency. The awards are given

to churches, corporations, individuals, volunteers and civic groups that make a significant contribution to OHU in the form of monetary, in-kind gifts or volunteer support.

In April 2011, more than 100 guests and staff attended the H

first Blue Ribbon of Hope Trivia Night event in Springfield, Illinois. More than $10,000 was raised and plans are un-derway for next year’s event scheduled for April 28, 2012 at Central Baptist Church in Springfield.

On our annual client survey, Hudelson Region scored 4.72 H

on a scale of 5 being most satisfied.

Hudelson Region has strengthened its relationship with the H

American Baptist Churches Great Rivers Region. As a re-sult, church support has increased by nearly 10% over the same period one year ago.

In addition, our agency received noteworthy support from H

a number of private sources such as the Boeing Employees Foundations, King’s Daughters Foundation and private fundraisers such as the Dining 2 Donate event celebrating Blue Ribbon Month.

There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were

called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one

faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all,

who is above all, and through all, and in you all. ~ Ephesians 4 (NKJV)

offers a diverse array of prevention, intervention and community-based services including adoption, foster care, independent living, in-home family support, case management and mental health services impacting more than 2,900 children and families each year. Achievements

One Hope United Florida Region

In Florida, we have been successful in supporting the agency vision of a safe home for every child by achieving high results. Nearly 100 percent of our children remain free from abuse and neglect while in foster care. Nearly 99 percent of our children remain safely with their family and free from abuse and neglect within our home based programs. And, we have successfully completed more than 850 adoptions since 2006.

One Hope United Florida Region is proud to H

announce a new partnership with Hillsbor-ough Kids! Hillsborough Kids oversees the care of approximately 2,800 children and teens in Hillsborough County, Florida due to abuse or neglect. Their mission is to keep kids safe while strengthening families. Funded primarily through Florida’s Department of Children and Families, Hillsborough Kids is the lead agency managing child welfare in Hillsborough County. We look forward to this new partnership. For more information about Hillsborough Kids, visit www.hillsboroughkids.org.

The Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption H

awards grants to public and private adoption agencies to hire adoption professionals who implement proactive, child-focused recruitment programs targeted exclusively on moving the longest-waiting children from foster care into adoptive families. The Florida Region is proud to be the recipient of two Dave Thomas Foun-dation Wendy’s Wonderful Kids grants for Or-ange and Osceola Counties in the amount of $135,000. We successfully exceeded our goal and look forward to finding forever families for foster children in 2012.

One Hope United received a $3,000 grant from H

the national organization The Alliance for Chil-dren and Families to identify ways to provide quality aging services. One Hope United was one of 22 agencies selected though a competitive, na-tional process to receive the grant. The grant is part of the New Age of Aging, an initiative of the Alliance for Children and Families designed to help prepare nonprofit human services organiza-tions throughout North America to best provide services for older adults as the vast Baby Boom Generation ages. The multi-million dollar initia-tive is funded by The Atlantic Philanthropies. One Hope United received a mini-grant through the New Age of Aging initiative because it is in-terested in enhancing current aging services or gaining competency in the field. The mini-grant will be used to strengthen services for older adults in the Sebring community.

Page 14: 2011 One Hope United Annual Report

One Hope United’s finances improved on both the operational and non-operating fronts in FY11. On the operational front, the agency experienced income over expenses of $654,866 versus a loss in FY10 of $104,774. This forward progress resulted from improved fiscal results including a rebound from costs associated with the closing of our Miami office in FY10 as well as increased operating margins in our Illinois and Missouri operations. One Hope United prides itself on being responsible stewards of the resources which are entrusted to us.

On the non-operating front, a receipt of $2 million in an irrevocable trust for the Hudelson Region, $4.26 million in capital grants and gifts for our new Aurora Early Learning Center in the Northern Region, and investment and farmland gains generated a total of $7.99 million in non-operating revenue.

These tactical gains collective with reduced management and fundraising overhead, contributed to enhanced fiscal results and a solid financial sustainability for One Hope United. The agency looks to strategically boost operating revenue in FY12 with new opportunities and partnerships in Florida as well as the startup of the Aurora Early Learning Center. The agency is preparing for and anticipating that governmental and contributory support could be constrained moving forward as the economic environ-ment in the states and impacting federally funded programs continues to be stressed. One Hope United is planning accordingly with innovation in the administrative and program service delivery areas to control costs and enhance revenues while staying steadfast to our mission of protecting children and strengthening families.

Sincerely,

Scott HumphreyTreasurer

Named for Rev. and Mrs. Ezra Scofield, who were instrumental in the formation of Chicago Baptist Orphanage, and Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Gibbs and their daughter Alice, who established the Hudelson Baptist Children’s Home, the Scofield-Gibbs Society was established to recognize the important contributions of these selfless families and provide continued support of their vision and mission.

Members of the Scofield-Gibbs Society have made the important decision to leave a lasting gift to One Hope United through a bequest, trust or other planned arrangement. These contributions help sustain the One Hope United legacy of protecting children and strengthening families for years to come.

The following individuals have made this significant commitment:

BETTY’S STORYBetty, 18, was a single mom without a high school diploma when she inquired about enrolling her son at our early learn-ing center. She was raising her family in her parents’ home. The center staff helped Betty enroll her son in OHU’s Head Start Program. The center’s family support specialist even assisted Betty in finding the right doctors and obtaining the required check-ups to meet the program’s health certification requirements. Once Betty knew her son was in safe and caring hands, she got to work securing a healthy future for her fami-ly. She enrolled at Truman College to work on earning a GED. Betty successfully completed her GED and even obtained a certificate of achievement and completion of the Latino Insti-

tute’s program in providing customer service. And she didn’t stop there. As she began to gain a sense of the possibilities life has to offer, Betty determined that her future would be in the medical world. She is now enrolled at the Computer System Institute with the goal of becoming a medical assistant. In the meantime, the center staff is assisting Betty in her job search so she can begin to think about finding a home of her own. Betty credits One Hope United with nurturing her parenting skills, empowering her to raise a child, and educating her on the knowledge and strength to take on the role of a respon-sible adult and mother.

When Kaden, 3, enrolled at our child development center, his parents were concerned about his speech and language develop-ment. A meeting between his parents and the center staff includ-ing a family support specialist, the classroom teaching staff, a mentor coach and the disability coordinator took place in order to access Kaden’s strengths and weaknesses and to establish a partnership between the center staff and his parents. Kaden’s parents explained that when he was between 18 months - 2 years old, he was using words to speak. Then shortly after turning 2, he stopped speaking with words. Kaden came to the center with an existing Individualized Education Program. Both parents expressed frustration over Kaden’s inability to express his wants, needs and feelings through words and wished that he was capable of expressing himself with more than one word statements. They were also concerned about how Kaden would react to transitioning to a new early learning program and a

new public school for his special education services. During the next two years, the staff at the center worked with Kaden’s par-ents to provide a supportive environment in meeting the child’s special learning needs, which included daily interaction, home visits and ongoing parent/teacher conferences. The disability coordinator worked with Kaden’s school to communicate and share information about his progress. The teaching staff imple-mented special lesson plans to better help Kaden’s speech and language development. Within two years’ time, Kaden’s annual evaluation meeting determined that Kaden was no longer eligible for special education services because he had successfully achieved all of his goals. Kaden was named to the Honor Roll at his elementary school in 2011 and is currently attending a One Hope United School Age Program.
