OperatedbyNorthStarScoutingMemorabilia,Inc.(NSSM),TheNorthStarMuseumofBoyScouting&GirlScoutingisanindependent,non‐pro itcorporation,foundedin1976byveteranScoutersfromtheeastsideofSaintPaul,whofeltcompelledtopreservethematerialremainsoftheirScoutingpastforfuturegenerations.

TheNorthStarMuseumistheonlymuseumintheUpperMidwestdedicatedtothehistory,tradi‐tions,andculturalimpactofBoyScoutsofAmeri‐ca(BSA)andGirlScoutsoftheUSA(GSUSA).Itsmissionisto"collect,preserve,share,andinter‐pretthehistoryandsigni icanceofBoyScoutingandGirlScoutingintheupperMidwest.”WhiletheMuseum’scollectionofover150,000itemsincludesartifactsfromallovertheworld,thepri‐marygeographicalfocusforitsoutreachandcol‐lectionsistheUpperMidwest,withemphasisonMinnesotaandwesternWisconsin.

Forits irst28yearsthegrowingcollectionhadnopermanenthome,andwasstoredinvariouslocations:theDakotaCountyHistoricalSociety,abankvault,MidwestPlasticsofWestSt.Paul,andahouseholdbasement.In1999,thecollectionwasmovedintoaspaceleasedby3MCompanyandgiftedannuallyby3MtoNorthStarMuseum.Thisclean,secure,dry,andpest‐freeindustrialspacewasidealforstoringthecollection,andindeedstillservestheMuseumasaninvaluablestoragefacility.However,liabilityconcernsmadethe3Mpropertyinaccessibletoanyoneunderage18,limitingtheabilitytosharethecollectionwiththecommunity,asitsfoundershadintended.

ThepurchaseofaNorthSt.Paullibrarybuildingin2005gavetheMuseumapermanenthome,openingtothepubliconApril22,2006.Witha

homebaseestablished,withincreasedprogram‐ming,withcontinuedcultivationofrelationshipswithlocalBoyScoutandGirlScoutCouncils,andwithapositiveimpactonthecommunityofNorthSt.Paul,theMuseum’svisibilityandreputationhascontinuedtogrow.

In2011,theNorthStarMuseummadegreatstridesinfundraising,programming,collectionsmanagement,andcommunityoutreach.AsExecu‐tiveDirectorClaudiaNicholsonstated,afterabrightandbusy2011FallattheMuseum,thepastyearbrought“alevelofactivitythatwehavebeenstrivingfor–aScoutingcommunitygatheringplacethatisinconstantuse,offeringavarietyoffun,enlightening,andeducationalprogramsforabroadaudience.”

HighlightsAnnualMeetingOnOctober8,2011,membersgatheredtocele‐bratetheMuseum’ssuccessesofthepreviousyearandgreatplansforfutureprogress,ashigh‐lightedinClaudiaNicholson’shearteningStateoftheMuseumaddress.KeynoteSpeakerKurtLeichtlesharedhisresearchonthelifeofCharlesL.Sommers,whichheplanstoturnintoabook.MembersenjoyedhismanyanecdotesaboutthelifeandcareerofMr.SommerswhowassoimportanttoBoyScoutinginourregion.

Attendeeswelcomednewly‐electedreturningBoardmembersNoraSlawik,BillRust,JohnGuth‐mann,andHowardGuthmann,andnewBoardmemberGeorgeBaldwin.TheMuseumpaidtrib‐utetooutgoingBoardmemberJulieJoyce,whowillcontinuetolendhertalentstotheMuseumthroughcommitteework.

DanKnuthwasintroducedastheChairofanewFriendsoftheMuseumfundraisingcampaign.DansharedsomeoftheexcitingnewplansintheworksforraisingfundsforongoingMuseumop‐erationsandprograms.

Davis&RandallFoundersHallEventOnNovember5,2011,acrowdof96attendedoursecondannualFoundersHallrecognitioneventat

theMuseum.Museummembers,familyandfriendsofthesixhonorees,membersoftheDavisandRandallfamilies(forwhomourFoundersHallisnamed),andseveralof2010’sinauguralinducteeswereabletotrulyexperiencetheMuseum,astheylunchedattablesspreadthroughouttheexhibithalls.Apanelforeachhonoree—recognizedasaFounder,Builder,orTrail‐blazer—wasunveiledinDa‐vis&RandallFoundersHall.

RecognizedasFoundersin2011wereElsieMooers,RonPhillippo,andPhyllisWiller‐scheidt.AFounderisavision‐aryleaderwhohasplayedasubstantialroleinthecreation,innovationordirectionofGirlScouts,BoyScouts,ortheNorthStarMuseumoverasig‐ni icantnumberofyears.RonPhillippo,PhyllisWiller‐scheidt,andfamilymembersofthelateElsieMooerswereinattendance.

HonoredasBuilders,andrep‐resentedbyfamilymembersattheevent,werethelateHughandEdnaGwinandthelateLeeandDorothyWhitson.ABuilderisonewhohasmadeameaningfulimpactonBoyScouts,GirlScouts,ortheNorthStarMuseum,throughtheir inancialsup‐portandgiftsofin luence.ABuilderisatransformativeleader,persuasiveandinsight‐fulintheirleadership;onewhohelpsmaketheFounders’visionareality.

WewillgathertohonorourthirdgroupofFoundersHallinducteesonNovember10,2012.

SkunkReunion&SkunkBooya

OnJune4,2011,twenty‐ iveSkunksattendedtheSkunkReunion in SwansonLodge at FredC.An‐dersen Camp. Keynote speaker Fred Riehm re‐galed his appreciative audiencewith tales of hisadventures as a 16‐year‐old Scoutmaster duringWorldWarII.DonatedSkunkGamelotteryticketsprovided fun for Skunks and $28 in scratch‐offwinnings for the Museum. Special thanks wereextendedbyClaudiatotheSkunksfortheircollec‐tionswork in2011.PaulBartzyal andArtMartyweretherecipientsofSkunkoftheYearAwards.

OnOctober23,SkunksandfriendsattendedtheirstannualSkunkBooyaattheMuseum.Booya,

anupperMidwesttradition,isboththenameforafriendly,sociableeventandtheheartystewatthecenterofit.Allenjoyedthewell‐spicedbooyapro‐videdbyJimRupert.ClaudiaNicholsongaveat‐tendeesatourofMuseumstorageandmadesomebriefremarksabout2011Skunkprojects,butthemajorityoftheeventwasgivenuptobooya‐basedfellowshipandfun.

TheSkunksAnnualBooyareturnstotheMuseumonOctober20,2012.

AccomplishmentsCollections/PreservationThankstothededicationoftheCollectionsCom‐mittee,volunteers,andstaff,aswellastheinvalua‐bleworkoftwoMuseuminterns,2011sawtre‐mendousprogressinourongoingeffortstoorgan‐izeandre ineourcollectiontobestsupporttheMuseum’smission.

In2011,twoimportantScoutingcollec‐tionsweregift‐edtotheMuse‐um.InJanuary,wereceivedtheinvaluablear‐chiveofSt.Paul’sBoyScoutTroop9.Thetroop’sme‐ticulouslykeptrecordsspantheTroop9’slonghistory,fromitsbegin‐ningsontheEastSidein1917tothepresent‐daytroopintheElSoldistrict.Includedinthecollec‐tionaretroopcharters,rosters,ribbons,patches,awards,anda1922photoalbum.InApril,LucilleThornsjogaveherexcellentcollectionofGirlScout

andBoyScoutmaterialstotheMuseum.ThereareitemsfromLucille’sGirlScoutyouthinWash‐ington,DC,aswellasmaterialsfromhertimeasbothleaderofaBrownietroopandaDenMotherinMinnesota.Amongtheobjectsinthiscollectionarea1937GirlScoutberet,a1950sGirlScoutLeaderhat,a1963FirstEditionCadetteGirlScoutHandbook,anda1942BSAAirScoutManual.

TheCollectionsCommitteeworkedhardtodrafttheMuseum’s irstformalCollectionsManage‐mentPolicy,whichwaspassedbytheBoardinOctober2011.ThisnewPolicygivesusasolidfoundationforourongoingprojecttoprocessthecollectionaccordingtocurrentmuseumbestpracticesandthemissionoftheNorthStarMuse‐um.

Inthespringof2011,UniversityofWisconsin‐RiverFallshistorymajorandEagleScoutJohnBuechelworkedwithourcollectionsforhisin‐

ternship.JohnbeganworkontheMuseum’sbacklogofacceptedcollections,helpingus

onourwaytoprocessdonateditems,clearourworkroom,andgetgiftdocumentsouttodonorsmorequickly.

ThankstoJoyceandBobRosene,whodonatedfundsforasummerinternship,theMuseumwel‐comedCooperstownGraduateProgramstudentAmyHollistertopickupwhereJohnleftoff.Amynotonlymadetremendousinroadsintoourcol‐lectionsbacklog,butalsosetupproceduressothatvolunteerscouldcontinuethiscrucialworkafterherdeparture.Amongmanyotherthingssheac‐complishedduringhertimehere,Amyprocessedover900donatedobjects,wroteaproceduresmanualandor‐ganizedcollectionspro‐cessingsuppliesforvolun‐teerstouse,andcreatedaguide‐to‐givingbrochureforpotentialcollectionsdonors.

InApril2011,tirelessSkunksbeganworkonaprojecttocatalogandpreservetheMuseum’sex‐tensivecollectionofBoys’LifeandScoutingmaga‐zines.A2010LegacyGrantfromtheMinnesotaHistoricalSocietyallowedustobeginre iningandorganizingthemagazines,safelystoringtheminacid‐freeboxes.Skunksspenthoursbusilysiftingthroughthecollection,followinggrantguidelines,

InJuly,theSkunksreturnedtobeginworkontheMuseum’sbookcollection,checkingfordupli‐cates,andsortingthroughthebookstodeterminewhichshouldbetreatedascollectionsobjectsthatsupportourmission,andwhichwouldbemorevaluableasreferencetools.Havingarefer‐encecollectionavailabletothepublic,andespe‐ciallytoleaders(wehaveatreasuretroveofac‐tivitybooksdatingbacktothe1930s),isanotherwayfortheMuseumtobeavitalresourcefortheScoutingandlocalcommunities.

MuseumWithoutWallsIn2011,wecontinuedtoshareourcollectionanditsrichstoriesbeyondthewallsofourbuildingthroughportableexhibitsandeducationalout‐reach,cultivatingimportantcontactsintheScout‐ingcommunity,andspreadingthewordaboutourMuseum’sofferingstomanyBoyScouts,GirlScouts,andotherswhohavenevervisitedtheNorthStarMuseumofBoyScouting&GirlScout‐ing.2011outingsincluded:

VisitationInJuly2011,weinstitutednewopenhours.ThemuseumisnowopenWednesdaythroughFridayafternoons,andalldaySaturday.Closingthemu‐seumdoorsonTuesdaysgivesourever‐busystaffmuch‐neededtimetodealwithadministrativetasksandongoingprojects.OurexperimentinbalancingadministrativeneedswiththeneedtoincreasetheMuseum’svisibilityandvisitationhasbeenasuccess:wehadamarkedincreaseinvisi‐torsin2011,with2,646visitingourMuseumheadquarters.

WesawavarietyofgroupstouringandusingtheMuseumspacein2011.BoyScoutandGirlScouttroopsheldtheirmeetingshere,touredtheMuse‐umwiththeirfamilies,watchedvintageScoutingilms,attendedCPR/FirstAidworkshops,madekites,andmadesandwichesforthehomeless.WealsogavetourstoGirlScoutprofessionalsand

volunteers,andhostedawell‐attendedGreatRiv‐ersDistrictRoundtable,aswellasthe irstmeet‐ingoftheRiverValleyGirlScoutAlumnaeAssoci‐ation.

BesidesfourEagleCourtsofHonor,wealsohost‐edacombinationGoldAward/Graduationpartyatthemuseum,withnearly200attending.Inad‐dition,CadetTroop50219heldadinnerattheMuseumtocelebrateearningtheirSilverAwards.Thetroop,whichmeetsregularlyatthemuseum,completedaserviceprojecttowardful illmentoftheirSilverAwardrequirementsattheMuseum.

AdministrationIn2011,VolunteerTerriAndersontookoveraschiefwebsiteadministratorandworkedwithClaudiaoncontinuedupdatesandimprovementstothewebsite.Alsoin2011,theNorthStarMuse‐umofBoyScouting&GirlScoutinglauncheditsof icialFacebookpage,anothersourceofonlineinformationandconnectionforfriendsoftheMu‐seum,thatcanhelpusreachanaudiencebeyondourcityandstate.

StaffandvolunteerscontinuedtoworkandplaninadvanceoftheGirlScoutCentennial,andpre‐parefortheGreatGirlGatheringattheMallofAmericain2012.InMay,wemetwithGirlScoutCouncilarchiviststodiscusshowwecouldcollab‐oratewiththecouncilsonCentennialexhibitsand

activities.InDecember,membersoftheGirlScouts’HeritageCommitteevisitedtheMuseum,bringingmanyphotographsfromtheircollectionforustolookatforaCentennialexhibit.

Building&GroundsAmonghismanyotherongoingmaintenancepro‐jectsin2011,FacilitiesManagerMikeLundin‐stalledventinginthewallbetweenstorageandgalleryspacesoftheMuseum.Theimprovedairmovementinthestoragearea,especiallyduringheatingseason,willmakethespacemorecom‐fortableforpeopleandmorestableforstoredar‐tifacts.

InFebruary2011,ClaudiaNicholsontouchedbasewithCindyKleven,CommunityGivingMan‐agerofthe3MFoundation,abouttheirgifttotheMuseumofstoragespaceintheCaseBuilding.Claudiacon irmedtheMuseum’sappreciationof

thecontinueduseoftheCasespaceforcollec‐tionsover low.Withongoingcollectionsworkcontinuingtofreeupouron‐sitestorageca‐pacity,ClaudiawasabletoassureCindythat,while3M’sgenerousgiftofspaceisinvaluabletousatpresent,theMuseumdoesnotplanonusingitforever.TheCasespacehasprovidedtheMuseumwithsafestorageforourcollec‐tionsforover11years,anin‐kindgiftvaluedatover$60,000perannum.

Overthesummer,weconductedawalk‐throughoftheMuseumwithrepresentativesofEner‐change,anon‐pro itorganizationdesignedtohelpothernon‐pro itsbecomemoreenergyef i‐cient.Enerchangedevelopedan“EnergyPrescrip‐tion”fortheMuseum,pointingusinthedirectionofrebatesandopportunitiesforsavingsfromchangesinourenergyconsumption.

In2011,Mikereceivedmuch‐neededassistanceingroundsupkeepintheformofdiligentvolun‐teers—whoweeded,edged,mowed,planted,andpainted—andalsoanew,butkey,pieceofequip‐ment.FebruarysnowsconvincedusitwastimetopurchaseasnowblowerfortheMuseum.Havingthistoolmakessnowremovalmucheasierand

speedier,givingMikemoretimetofocusonothermaintenanceneeds.

InMay,RamseyCountygrantedaone‐yearexten‐sionontheMuseum’sContractforDeedforthebuilding,withthedeadlineforfullpaymentex‐tendedtoApril2012.

OnOctober15,AdultBoyScoutTroop594cametotheMuseumtobeautifyourgroundsandhelpfellowTroopMember,SteveLape,ful illhisser‐viceprojectfortheEagleAward.Fortheproject,Troop594membersclearedweeds,stainedbuild‐ingpanels,plantedmorespringbulbsinthesignplanter,andplantedhostasaroundtheplanter.Thankstofellowtroopmembers,SteveLape(whohasDownsSyndromeandisindeclininghealth),wasabletocompletehisEagleserviceprojectatourMuseum.ThiseventwascoveredbytheLillieSuburbanNews,whichpublishedphotosoftheTroopatwork,andtheSt.PaulPioneerPress,whichpublishedanarticleonSteveandhisproject.

ProgramThesuccessofourMeritBadgeWorkshopeventsin2009and2010inspiredustorampupthepro‐gramin2011,withmoremeritbadgesofferedat

morefrequentworkshops.2011sawtheadventoftheverypopularSuperMeritBadgeWeeks.Pre‐registrationwasbriskenoughtogenerateawait‐inglist,provingthatScoutingdoesn’tstopforsummerbreak.DuringtheweeksofJuly25andAugust8,dedicatedvolunteercounselorspow‐eredthrough13meritbadgeclasses,bringing

manyboysandtheirparentstotheMuseum.InadditiontoofferingmeritbadgesrequiredforEa‐glerank,wealsocoveredbadgesnottypicallyof‐fered,includingtwowithambitiousoff‐sitecom‐ponents:CyclingandRi leShooting,forwhichBaldEagleSportsmanClubofHugogenerouslyallowedusfreeuseoftheirrange.Thankstotheexperthelpofourvolunteercounselorsandregis‐trar,CarolForrest,our2011MeritBadgeWork‐shopsreceivedstrongreviewsfromparticipants.

Toful illtheserviceprojectrequirementfortheSilverAward,CadetGirlScoutTroop50219plannedandhostedaprogramforBrowniesattheMuseum.OnFeb‐ruary12,twenty‐threeBrowniesattendingtheprogramearnedtwoTry‐Itpatches,theLet’sPretendandMakingMusicTry‐Its.

2011sawthelaunchofourlunch‐timetalkpro‐gramforadults,ThePauseThatRefreshes.TheMuseumhostedthreewell‐attendedtalks,featur‐ingthreedynamicspeakers.OnSeptember12,formerSt.PaulMayorGeorgeLatimerinspiredtheaudiencewithhisaddressonthevalueofVol‐unteerism;onOctober12,HowardGuthmannen‐tertainedthecrowdwithstoriesfromhis75yearsofBoyScouting(andevenhadtheaudiencesingingalongtoanoldcampsong);andonDe‐cember12,CEOofGirlScoutsofMinnesotaandWisconsinRiverValleys,LindaKeene,gavetheaudiencemuchinsightintothepresentandfutureoftheGirlScoutsorganizationinitshundredthyear,andthechallengesitfacesgoingforward.ThePauseThatRefresheswasoneofourgreatsuccessesof2011,bringingmany irst‐timevisi‐tors,andanumberofnewmemberships,totheMuseum.

FundraisingInAugust2011,wewerepleasedtowelcomeDanKnuthaschairmanofour irstformalAnnualFundcampaign,thenewFriendsoftheMuseumfundraisingcampaign.Thiscampaignisdesignedspeci icallytoraisemoneyneededtosupportgeneraloperationsoftheMuseum,providingthemorethan$150,000perannumneededtocoverinsurance,utilities,programs,andstaf ingfortheMuseum.Inaddition,thisfundwillprovideforbuildingmaintenanceandrepairs,replacingout‐datedcomputers,much‐neededof iceequip‐

ment—essentiallyeverythingweneedtokeeptheMuseumrunningandopentothepublic.PartofDan’spreparationsforthelaunchofthecampaigninvolvedworkingtoraisetheMuseum’spublicpro ile:amongotherprojects,DanconceivedtheplanfortheMuseumtohosttheGreatRiversDis‐trictRoundtable,andpreparedthewayforanar‐ticleaboutBarbHermann’sworkasourBoard’sChair,publishedbyPressPublicationsofMahtomedi.

InSeptember,BobandJoyceRoseneoffereda$25,000matchinggiftfortheMuseum’soperatingfund.TheRosenesalsopledgedanother$25,000tomatchcapitalgifts,givenbeforeApril2012,topayofftheMuseumbuilding’scontractfordeed.BothmatchinggiftslaunchedonthethirdannualGivetotheMaxDayinNovember.

GivetotheMaxDay2011wasthemostsuccessfulyet,generatingthebiggestone‐daytotalofdona‐tionsintheMuseum’shistory.OnthatdaygiftsthroughGiveMN.orgtoourAnnualFund,theCele‐bratetheJourneyCampaign,andneworin‐creasedmembershippaymentsbroughtin$5,526.TheBobandJoyceRosenematchinggiftsgenerat‐edanother$4,125,whichbroughtGivetotheMaxDaytotalgiftstoourMuseumtoalmost$10,000.

Wecontinuetoencouragenewandcurrentmem‐berstojoinasSustainingMembersoftheMuse‐um.Launchedinlate2010,theSustainingMem‐bershipprogramisalreadyshowingastabilizingeffectonourannualoperatingbudget,aswellasmakingiteasierforourmemberstokeeptheirmembershipscurrent.

FacilitiesManagerMikeLundjoinedthepaidstaffoftheMuseumin2007afterseveralyearsasaveryfaithfulvolunteer.Whenwepurchasedthebuilding,Mikemadeithisbusinesstoseetothegrounds(whichwereunkemptatthattime),andtotheneighbors:hewasour irstambassadortoNorthSt.Paul.Hisattentiontotheoutsideofthebuildingputusingoodsteadwiththeneighbors,andhiscareofthebuilding’sinteriorcatchesthenoticeofvisitors.Mikemaintainsthebuildingandgrounds,setsupforspecialevents,takesonlong‐termmaintenancetasksforour10,500squarefootbuilding,servesasMuseumsecurityof icer,andperformscountlessothertasks.HisworkiscrucialtotheoperationsoftheNorthStarMuse‐um.MikeisAssistantScoutmasterofTroop216inSt.Paul.

VolunteerTeamLeaderGaryGormanbecameanunpaidstaffmemberin2009.Garyrecruits,trains,andcoordinatesthevolunteerswhohelpruntheMuseum’sprograms.AsaMuseumvolun‐teerhimself,GaryworkedonboththePatchPro‐jectandBoys’LifeProject,staffsthemuseumdur‐ingopenhours,conductsgroupandindividualtours,andmakespresentationsatScoutingeventsonbehalfoftheMuseum.GaryisretiredafterthirtyyearsservingasanInvestigationsSupervi‐sorwiththeMinnesotaDepartmentofHumanRights.HealsohasoverthirtyyearsofadultScoutingexperience,includingtwenty‐eightyearsasScoutmastertoElSolDistrictTroop228,Min‐nesota’s irstall‐LatinoScouttroopinthepost‐WWIIera.GaryhasreceivedthenationalWhitneyYoungAwardforworkwithinnercityScouts,aswellastheSilverBeaverAward.
