Questions and Answers

How much creative freedom am I allowed in my interpretation of the subject matter?d Your interpretation of the subject matter can be as innovative as your thoughts will take you, so longas the expression of your interpretation is a thoughtful spatial response to the topic.

What happens if I am intrigued by the subject matter, but ultimately disagree with it?d

As SDF promotes a dialog of ideas, we always encourage debate. Regardless if your vignette is apositive or negative response to the topic, you are encouraged to submit. Your stance on thesubject matter will not be held for or against you.

How can I incorporate floor plans, sections, etc. in a single vignette?d Simply, you can’t, nor are you expected to. You do not have to submit a building design at all. Yourresponse need only express a spatial idea. You can express your idea through architectural design, photography, painting, etc. Keep in mind that if you do submit an architectural design, you are onlypermitted to submit a single vignette, a single image of the design, not an entire series of plans, sections, etc.

Why does SDF allow any medium to be submitted? Can a photograph of a sculpture actuallybe compared to an architectural design?d SDF believes 1. to limit medium would limit the range of ideas, and 2. spatial concepts can beconceived and expressed in any medium available. It is true that in conventional terms, it becomesdifficult if not impossible to compare works of art created by such different methods. However, SDF

will only be comparing the thoroughness of the vignette’s idea and how successfully it is expressedin each entry.

Why am I not supposed to put my name on my entry? d We do not expect any bias from those evaluating. However, we have you use your registrationnumber on your entry file name instead of your name as a precaution.

Once I submit, do I retain copyright over my work?d Your entry’s copyright will always remain with you, the creator. If you place 1st or receive honorablemention, SDF will send you a Consent of Use form. If signed, you grant SDF permission to publishyour entry, always with credit being directly and clearly attributed to you. However, at no time doesthe copyright pass from your hands.

How will the vignettes be judged?d SDF will evaluate each entry based on how thoroughly the applicant/s considered the sociologicalimpact of their spatial interpretation of the subject matter, how successfully their idea is expressedin their vignette, and general technique of execution. Due to the quick process of each monthlyvignette competition, the vignettes will be evaluated in-house.

What will happen with the winning entries?d If the winning participant/s agree/s, their entry will be displayed on our website.
