CONTINUING THE FIGHT AGAINST BREAST CANCER

Last year I was asked by one of my high school classmates, Cris Shutt to attend a planning meeting for the Men of Oklahoma calendar which benefits the Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The idea for the calendar was conceived in 2004 when twin sisters Cris Eoff Shutt and Linda Eoff Crooks and her husband, Steve Crooks, were inspired by the courage of a close friend, Sheryl Auringer, as she faced breast cancer.
The Men in the calendar are local celebrities, executives, students, health care professionals and others who want to raise money to find a cure because their families, friends, and co-workers have been affected by breast cancer. I attended the meeting and quickly felt drawn to try and help with this cause. I became the Marketing Director for the calendar and helped raise donations.
This year I have been asked to be in the calendar. Instead of just calling people and asking for a donation, I thought it would be more beneficial to give people the opportunity to participate with me. To do this, I started www.1002miles.com. The concept is to ride my bicycle 1002 miles and solicit pledges for every mile. Beginning June 1st and lasting until I have completed my 1002 miles or the October Kick-Off Party for the calendar, I will ride my bicycle 1002 miles. My goal is to raise $10.00 per mile or $10,020.00. I can only achieve this with the help of generous corporate sponsors and friends who really do want to see an end to this terrible disease. Special thanks to all of my sponsors!

OUR INSPIRATIONIn loving memory of Sheryl Auringer The Men of Oklahoma calendar started in 2004 as a fundraiser for the fight against breast cancer. The idea blossomed from the minds of two sisters, Cris Shutt and Linda Crooks, and Linda’s husband, Steve, who were inspired by the courage of their close friend, Sheryl Auringer in her fight against breast cancer.
Sadly, Sheryl lost her battle in January of 2009 at 52 years old. The 2011 Men of Oklahoma calendar is, once again, dedicated to the memory of her spirit, courage and the love she gave to everyone whose lives she touched. Sheryl was diagnosed in March 2004 and she always kept a positive outlook, even as her disease progressed. The fact that she never missed a day of work unless she was in treatment, exemplifies her strength and bravery. Sheryl was this project’s biggest supporter, going to women’s groups to share her story and to sell calendars! She was an inspiration to her family and friends, many of whom have been featured in the calendars over the years.
Each year, corporate sponsorship is raised to cover all the production costs of the calendar. One hundred percent of calendar sales benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Having raised nearly $90,000 to support breast cancer research and treatment since its inception, the Men of Oklahoma calendar project is now the second largest fundraiser for the Central Oklahoma Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
This project blessed Sheryl’s life and will continue as her legacy.
ABOUT SUSAN G. KOMEN FOR THE CURENancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise became Susan G. Komen for the Cure and launched the global breast cancer movement. Today, Komen for the Cure is the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. Thanks to events like the Komen Race for the Cure, we have invested over $1 billion to fulfill our promise, becoming the largest source of nonprofit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer in the world.
The Central Oklahoma Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, along with those who generously support us with their talent, time and resources, is working to better the lives of those facing breast cancer in our community. Through events like the Komen Oklahoma City Race for the Cure and the Men of Oklahoma Calendar, we have invested over $7 million in local breast health and breast cancer awareness projects in Central Oklahoma. Up to 75 percent of net proceeds generated by the Komen Central Oklahoma Affiliate stays in our 10-county service area. The remaining income goes to the national Susan G. Komen for the Cure Grants Program for energizing science to find the cures.

“I am driven to proactively participate in the Men of Oklahoma Calendar in honor of the women in my family who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. I did not have the opportunity to meet my great-grandmothers who both fought the disease, but I have witnessed my grandmother’s
strength and courage in her fight. My grandmother, Miriam Johnson, is a 6-year survivor and a true champion in this race for a cure.”

“Cancer has devastated my family over and over again. I feel the need to do what I can, striving for a cure for all cancer, not just breast cancer. I currently have a sister battling ovarian cancer, I lost my mom and sister to ovarian cancer and my father to lung cancer.
If my involvement can lead to a cure, I am all in.”

“I wanted to be involved with the calendar in honor of my grandmother, Ruth, who was a breast cancer survivor. Truly the strongest lady I have ever known, she lived well into her nineties. I am always inspired by my memories of her.
One of my greatest joys is that Benjamin was held by his great grandmother before she became ill and passed away.”

“In December 2007, I received a phone call from my mother; she was crying. She told me she had breast cancer and in that moment, my life changed. It was the most helpless feeling I have ever had; a feeling of sadness, anger and fear. This is why my son, Matthew and I are working with the Men of Oklahoma
Calendar, to honor my mother and to aid in eliminating breast cancer. My mother, JoAnn Rickards, is now a 2-year survivor.”

“The McKown Men are celebrating 25 years of survival with wife and Mom, Judy McKown. In July of 1985, Judy was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer. In September 2005 she had a recurrence of breast cancer and is now in full remission. By working with organizations such as Susan
G. Komen and the Men of Oklahoma Calendar, we are devoted to finding a cure and look forward to many more years together as a family.”
