Library for Environmental Conservation Fall 2009.1Downtown Knoxville, TN needed a new li-

brary. I designed the Library for Environmen-tal Conservation to help educate the public on environmental and sustainable topics. The libary is three stories and has a spiral stair-case as the main focal point. This staircase is also a vertical garden which library goers can descend or climb while encompassed by green life. Vertical gardens are also found in the front and back courtyards which also act as outside reading areas. These green spaces provide quiet, relaxing areas while reiterating the “green” atmosphere.

CUBE Fall 2009.

CUBE boutique is located in downtown Knoxville, TN. It is modern and sleek. I cre-ated a series of hanging cubes which are anchored to the ceiling that provides shelv-ing for the clothes. I was also inspired by the idea of architectural “wrappers.” These wrappers start as a plane on the floor, con-tinue on the wall and finish “wrapping” the shelves on the ceiling. Not only are the shelves wrapped but each one is consid-ered a wrapper in itself. Buyers can “un-wrap” the clothes by sliding the screens over the front of each cube. Not only does this provide a unique experience for each client but also helps to hide unkempt merchandise.

Study of a Cave System Spring 2010.

Page 7: 2011 Interior Design Portfolio

This project studied cave systems as a way to inspire a design for a dorm room on the Uni-versity of Tennessee’s campus. I specificaly focused on the formations of stalactites and stalagmites. These formations in a cave be-gin with a single drop of water. Over time, the mineral deposits in the drops of water build up. After forming the stalactites, the water falls to form the stalagmite. I focused on the verticality of the dripping of the water and the buildup of layers within the cave for-mations themselves. The thin faucet that de-scends from the ceiling into the sink mimics the dripping of water while the spiral closet

also mimics the shape of a stalactite itself.

4The urban loft designed for banjo artist, Bela Fleck is meant to be a live/work studio for the contemporary musician. It includes a studio where Bela can practice his craft and also teach students. Bela can also keep a collec-tion of his records in his built in shelving system with sliding music note partitions. The physi-cal shape of the banjo also inspried the round bar while the hanging lights are the banjo strings. Since Fleck often visits Africa to study the history of the banjo, I incorporated a col-or scheme that reminds one of Africa. The deep reds, oranges and yellows along with the deep brown of the cork floor are reminis-

cent of a African sunset.

Exposure of a Historic Building. Fall 2010.

The Cal Johnson building is a historic building in downtown Knoxville, TN. It is a three sto-ry structure and it was converted into three unique spaces while keeping the historical aspect of the building “exposed.” The first floor is a Pet Safe Grooming Salon. The sec-ond floor is an office for Knox Heritage and the third floor is a Glowing Body Yoga Studio. The theme behind my design was the term “exposure.” I wanted to expose all the cli-ents in each environment while exposing the beauty of the Cal Johnson building itself. The Pet Safe floor plan is mostly an open space where dog owners and animals both can be groomed at the same time. The openness of the floor plan and the exposure of being groomed coexist in the design of the first floor.5

Knox Heritage downtown office occupy the second floor of the Cal Johnson build-ing. Again, the floor plan is mostly open. I was very aware of the center column sys-tem and wanted to keep it exposed. The column system in the center is similar to the backbone of a skeleton in that they help their greater bodies stay composed. All systems within the building, such as plumb-ing and HVAC, are also exposed. Much like there can be beauty in an exposed skeleton, there can be beauty in the in-ner workings of a building. Specifically, in the Knox Heritage offices, each individual employee is exposed. Each office is sepa-rated by glass partitions. So while the glass provides a sound barrier it does not give much visual privacy. I wanted all employ-ees to be exposed while working to make a

more efficient workplace.6

Glowing Body Yoga Studio occupies the third floor of the Cal Johnson building. The main focus in the program was the wind-ing serpentine wall the travels from front to back of the floor plan. It is meant to guide clients back to the studios and also to mim-ic the soothing path on which one trav-els when practicing yoga. I also kept all plumbing and HVAC exposed on this level which emphasizes the exposure one emits

when exercising in a public setting. 7

Viewing Gallery Spring 2011.9PATH Public Relations is a PR firm that pro-

motes community improvement. It is locat-ed in Alton Park in Chattanooga, TN. Alton Park is a run down community that is in need of repair. PATH Public Relations’s corporate office complex also works with non- profits to better the surrounding community. My de-sign consisted of incorporating as pathways into the interior environment so employees are reminded on a daily basis of the path they are on, as well as the community ,to im-

prove the surrounding area.

Band Promotional Logos 2008-2010.

Sky White Tiger is a “five-piece psyche-pop” band from New York City. I created a promotional graphic for one of their winter shows. I designed a graphic for them that would be colorful and eye-catching. I also incorporated the tiger to re-enforce their name while the snowflake is exemplary of

the winter concert.

Cutthroat Junction is a folk rock band from Nashville, TN. They asked for a graphic that they could put on their website and use for their shirts. I created a graphic that was “edgy and raw” to showcase the band’s style. The image I created somewhat re-sembles a rose (to show femininity due to the band’s female lead) and broken glass

to show their cutting edge sounds.
