The Vacant Lots Garden Club pioneered a civic beautifcation initiative in 1914. The objective was to encourage

individuals who owned vacant lots to cultivate and transorm them into ertile garden plots. Free o weeds anddebris, the gardens would produce vegetables or owers and contribute to the nourishment and overall aestheticsand pride o the community as a whole.

The Bridgeland-Riverside Vacant Lots Garden, the last o its kind in Calgary, dates back to the late 1920s. Marshall

Libicz (88) has been working in the garden since he was a small child. And Mike Ricketts was instrumental ingetting the garden protected as a heritage asset.

In 1912, customs receipts in this city exceeded those o any other centre west o Toronto. In response, the ederal

government commissioned Calgarys Customs House. It was completed in 1916 and unctioned largely as a oreigngoods sorting warehouse through to 1979.

The Customs House is a our-storey Chicago Commercial-style warehouse building with a decidedly upscale

presence. Canadian sourced building materials and fttings were used whenever possible, reecting the periodsstrong sense o nationalism. The exterior is clad in local, rusticated sandstone and brick with pilasters and asubstantial sheet metal cornice capping the acades. Its classical details continue inside with Quebec marblepaneling and staircase.

With its Classical Revival-style architecture, angled aade and ront verandas, the Ogden Hotel was the most

substantial commercial structure in Ogden or its time. Today it stands as a monument to commercial ambition and bad timing. In 1911, the CPR announced plans to root its Western Canada repair acility i n the Ogden area.

In 1912, the Calgary Brewing and Malting Company saw a market in the making and built the 64-room Ogden

Hotel complete with a huge dining room, a basement bowling alley, a billiards room and, o course, a well-proportioned bar. A worldwide depression hit i n 1913. Then, in 1914 there was war. In 1915 the Ogden Hotel gaveitsel over to the Red Cross and it became the frst military convalescent hospital in Alberta.

Historic preservation involves three steps: identication (know and understand what has

signicant heritage value and merits preservation), protection (legally protect historicresources to prevent demolition), and management (ensure alterations do not negatively

    impact the heritage value).

In Alberta municipalities, legal protection of historic resources is achieved through a

Designation Bylaw that prohibits demolition and protects the heritage value of the resource

through a specic approval process that governs alterations. These bylaws cannot be passed

without the owners consent. The City collaborates with owners to provide incentives (e.g.

tax abatements, rezoning benets, parking relaxations and direct grants) for legal protection

    of historic resources.

To date, The City has protected 35 local sites as Municipal Historic Resources, including

those featured in this years calendar.

In 2010 The City of Calgary received formal recognition and a National Honourable Mention

for The Prince of Wales Prize for Municipal Heritage Leadership from the Heritage Canada

Foundation. As well, the Alberta Historical Resources Foundation honoured The City with a

Provincial award for Calgarys commitment to the protection of its historic resources.

2011 marks the 100th anniversary of Historic City Hall. Its preservation as a Municipal
