It is with very heavy hearts that we say goodbye to long me MAWRA member and officer Brigi e Greenberg, who died of complica ons of esophageal cancer on June 15th. Brigi e was a reless worker whose contribu ons to her club’s events, WRAP and the breed as a whole will be sorely missed. Our deepest sympathy goes out to her fellow club members, her whippets, her friends and especially her grieving family on her un mely and tragic loss.
Hug your hounds and waste no op‐portunity to tell your loved ones what they mean to you.

MID‐ATLANTIC WHIPPET RACING ASSOCIATION DENDRON, VIRGINIA February 26/27, 2011
W ith the geo‐graphic center of our club’s
membership dri ing south, and the forma on of the new club GRR in Georgia, MAWRA decided to try to have a more southern race meet to kick off the CWA year. While we did not suc‐ceed in drawing anyone from outside our own usual par cipants, we were very happy with the field and the date, and may add this to our permanent calendar of events. The weather in late Feb‐ruary in Southeastern VA is usually not overly cold, and it was a nice way to shake off some winter rust.
If we con nue to offer a weekend of racing at this site in future years, we will have a rea‐sonably close, dog‐friendly hotel, but due to a special circumstance, lodging for the event this year was a ferry ride away in Williamsburg. The Scotland Ferry across the James River was a very pleasant way to begin the racing day.
The field is located in Dendron, VA, or as Kristen put it “LITERALLY, the middle of no‐where”. It is owned by Ken and Lori Stebritz, and is also known as LaQuest’s Whippet Heaven. It is a nice big, mostly flat hayfield where you can set up boxes and run safe‐ly. We did our MAWRA match racing, too, for the dogs present who were not entered in or eligible for the meet. Allie’s “Pixie” won the match racing—s ll fast as a veteran.
Ken and Lori were very generous to offer MAWRA the use of their field. We are most grateful to them.
We were pre y thrilled to get a 30 dog meet despite the absence of some of our usual par cipants. The story of the weekend for the point picture was the Licketysplits vs. the Ice Creams. The Licketysplits came out roaring at the last weekend of 2010 with back to back meet wins for Beau. Beau finished easily on Saturday, taking 5 points to finish his ARX by winning three meets in a row. Garcia, an Ice Cream, thrilled our landowners by taking the next highest set of ARX points. The final ARX point was won by Tailor, but Elsa made a strong bid finishing barely out of the points. The 3 NARX points were snaffled up by Bomber, who can’t beat Beau, but steadily ensconced himself in the 2nd posi on. A promising FTE, Brodie, put up a 10.

MID‐ATLANTIC WHIPPET RACING ASSOCIATION DENDRON, VIRGINIA February 26/27, 2011
Peg Rideout (Mens Sana) stepped in to do the Saturday match on short no ce, and found her winner in Tailor. Se‐cond to Bacon, third to Elsa, and fourth to Scarle , whose owner was pleased with the match placement, but even more pleased about winning the high‐ly‐coveted “turtle”. The compe‐
on for the turtle was ex‐pected to be fierce, but Pocket’s DNF in race one took her out
early, else she might have had something to say about that. A er the meet, a large group went out to eat at a typical Tidewater Virginia family restaurant. Dishes such as the local "peanut soup" were tried by many of the group. Peanuts and cream‐‐not exactly low in calories, but tasty a er a windburned day outside.
Sunday saw some a ri on, and we did not get to 30 dogs, but a fine entry of 24 showed up to compete. It was all Licketysplit at the top, except for Bomber, who again finished second to race meet winner Beau. Tailor took the 4 ARX and Ace the lower set of 2 ARX. Sadly, Brodie got a toe injury in the first program and was not able to complete the meet. Wol ound breeder Monica Gallier judged the match and found her winner in Bomber, followed by Finn, Augie, and Bacon. Most improved day to day was Kohl, who went from a 9 to a 13. We loved Dendron and hope to return and host more meets in that area.

GEORGIA RAG RACING HULL, GEORGIA
March 12/13, 2011
T he inaugural race meet of the Georgia Rag Racing Club was held at One Day Farm in Hull,
GA. The mornings were brisk but quickly warmed to 68‐70F under a sunny sky with a light breeze. It was a perfect Southern weekend for rac‐ing and conforma on matches. Whippets competed from Georgia, Louisiana, South Carolina, and Virgin‐ia.
Entries included 25 adult dogs and 2 puppies on Saturday and 27 adult dogs and 2 puppies on Sunday. The races were excellent and the club’s new star ng box, constructed by Les Pekarski, func oned well and was user friendly. The Subway sandwiches hit the spot for lunch and Sara’s potato chip cookies and Shawn’s taco bean dip were a success. Our experienced lure operators included Drew Durance and Kris n Fredericks. As Vice President of CWA, Kristen was a much appreciated encyclopedia of knowledge that helped our inaugural race meet move smoothly.
Beau FC Licketysplit Catch Your Eye ARX SC FCh was the undefeated meet winner both Sat‐
urday and Sunday earning 8 NARX points. Second in the meet on Saturday was Bacon Mari‐
ner’s Chubby Hubby earning 2 NARX and 4 ARX points. Flynn Debmar’s Sparks Will Fly at
Liberty SC CGC received the 2 ARX points and was fourth in the meet. Our undefeated pup‐
py for the weekend was Albus, Liberty’s Absent Minded Professor. Bomber, Surry Hill U

ARX took home 2 NARX points on Sunday, Ace, Licketysplit Catch the Wind, rounded out the weekend with 4 ARX points on Sunday and Flynn squeezed out Ba‐con and Ruby by .5 points to get the last set of 2 ARX points. We had 7 FTE’s for the week‐end and expect more at the next race meet.
The conforma on matches were judged by Rachel Gongre of FL on Saturday and Kevin Saunders of Hull, GA on Sunday. Rachel’s Conforma on winners were 1st Lindsey Cherche Suger Fallin From the Sky SC, 2nd Jackson Divana’s Heir of Illusion at Cherche, 3rd Cora (puppy) Liberty’s My Funny Val‐en ne and 4th Albus (puppy) Liberty’s The Absent Minded Professor.

Kevin’s conforma on winners for Sunday were 1st Rye, Licketysplit Catch Her in the Rye, 2nd Cora (puppy), third Bacon and 4th Beau.
Photographs were taken by Ken La mer and David Watkins. Thanks are also due Frankie Watkins, David’s father, for the use of a por on of his field and facili es. Lisa Saunders had excellent art, cra s, and dog related accessories for sale. The raffle was well received and top winners were Ma and Becky Mealy (dog bed) and Kris n Fredericks (Flip video cam‐era). Many thanks to all par cipants who were involved in all aspects of the meet from handling dogs, loading and opera ng the star ng box, retrieving the lure, catching whippets, and serving as line and foul judges. We hope more people will a end future meets at One Day Farm and help placing Georgia Rag Racing on the CWA circuit! Plan to enjoy our Southern hospitality in the near future. ‐ Chris Durance‐Watkins, Mary Hawemann, Sara Lenahan, and Ken La mer

RACING FOR FUN ABBOTSFORD, BC April 2/3, 2011
F or the first race of the season we had a good turnout of 26 dogs and
one puppy entered for one of the we est race days I have seen. The day didn’t start out looking too bad, with showers coming and going as we were se ng up and checking every one in. It even looked like it was ge ng brighter, but if anything it was just fooling us with what was to come…
There were some puddles on the track when we started but nothing us West coasters haven’t seen before. So the board was drawn and dogs dressed and off we went. We had very hot compe on in this wet weather with Daltrey showing everyone just how it’s done in the rain. Zuri was having some great runs too and giving the brown boys a run for their money. With two programs done we started to reset the board and that’s when the rain really came down. We decided to see if we could wait it out but then it got cold and changed to hail… yuck, it was just down right nasty and we couldn’t see any sign of it stopping. So if all else fails call for lunch…. out came all the glorious warm and yummy food. We all huddled under the canopies ea ng, while the dogs were in the nice warm cars of course. With some luck the rain did finally stop, but the ground was now very wet and the puddles on the field had grown into lakes. We had to adjust some pulleys because they were com‐pletely submerged and lighten the lure that was about 10 pounds of soaking wet squawker, and then we were back up and running. We decided to call the meet a er the 3rd program because there was just too much standing water on the track and it was very slick and dan‐gerous at the finish. There were some very large rooster tails following the dogs down the

track. We all felt sorry for the ones not in the lead who were pre y much running blind. We were able to finish the third program without any problems, thankfully, considering the field condi ons. So big congrats go to meet winner Daltrey who was able to race/swim his way to the lead, and picking up 4 NARX points. Brother Marshall came in second and picked up the bo om set of 2 NARX points. The ba le for the ARX points were close with only half a point be‐tween Zuri who took the top set of 4 ARX points and Fred who took the bo om set of 2 ARX points. Saturday’s match judge was Beth Levine, who awarded 1st place to Kai, 2nd to Smoke, 3rd to Logan, and 4th to Lucy. Of course, by the me the racing and match were over and it was me to take the win photos, the sun decided to come out…. Go figure. We were sure nobody seeing the match win photo in Line & Lure would believe how bad the earlier weather and track condi ons had been, so we were happy to discover that Stephanie Hon‐ey‐Gillespie was able to supply photographic proof! We all went home that a ernoon hop‐ing the late sunshine was a good sign that tomorrow would be a much be er weather day.
Sunday was much more like racing for fun then Saturday. Amazing how cloudy skies and a much, much dryer track make a world of difference. We moved the racetrack to the higher side of the field, and the distance was shortened to 150 yards. We had 25 dogs and one puppy to start the day of racing. Once again it was anyone’s guess on who would take meet and ARX points. There were lots of very close races through all the grades. The Fireworks brothers had Lacy making them work hard for their placements. A er the third program we had a very ght ba le for the second set of ARX points between Bode, Pete and Lexy. It all came down to the final race… so big congrats to Bode who won the

final semi race to finish half a point ahead and win 2 ARX points. Fred picked up the top set of 4 ARX points, and with this he finished his ARX tle. Today’s meet winner was Daltrey, who picked up 4 NARX points and is now a NARX2. Brother Marshall picked up the bo om set of NARX points. Your trusty race secretary made her match judging debut, and chose for her placements: 1st to Logan, 2nd to Smoke, 3rd to Lucy and 4th to Bode.
This weekends puppy racers Por a and Mojo both ran very well, they ran hard and broke from the boxes like bullets, can’t wait to see them grow and become full fledged racers. We have lots of young puppies that look very promising so it should make for some very ex‐ci ng racing come summer me. And last but not least I just want to thank eve‐ryone for helping make it another successful weekend of racing—without all the help of everyone pitching in it just doesn’t happen. So thanks to the box operator Randy, lure opera‐tor Peter and bunny retriever Steve. Also thanks to the all the line judges who had to stand in a big puddle to see the dogs come over the line. Also a big thank you to anyone who helped take down or put up the field or re‐string the lure, every bit helps to make the meet go so smoothly. ‐ Jennifer Szabo, Racing For Fun

W ow! Another beau ‐ful weekend for rac‐ing on the farm. The
hay had grown a few feet and provided a great natural border for the track and the rain the night before kept everything green and the ground so for racing. Considering it was Easter week‐end, we had a good entry with 23 Adult starters and one puppy on Saturday and 22 Adults and one puppy on Sunday. Ten of the adults on Saturday were
FTE’s!!! And they were all running like pros on Sunday. Some of our FTE’s from the last meet were really showing us what they were made of this weekend, most notably Jackson and Tailor really kicked it up a notch this weekend. McGuire was the highest placing FTE earning 11.5 meet points both days. The top four dogs in the meet, and the point winners, were the same both days. Remain‐ing undefeated at GRR was cur‐rent #1 CWA Racer Beau, earn‐ing another 8 NARX points for the weekend, second in the meet was Ryder earning his first 4 NARX points, third in the meet taking home a total of 8 ARX points for the weekend was Tailor, and fourth in the meet, earning his first 4 ARX points this weekend, was Jack‐son. Our one and only puppy was Orville and not only did he run hard but he had a great me. Dave and the boys cooked up some great burgers and dogs (hot dogs that is) for lunch and Sara’s potato chip cookies are to die for if you like bu er.
Point winners: Beau, Ryder, Tailor, Jackson

Saturday’s conforma on match was judged by Glenda Durance of Cherche’ whippets. Her 1st place dog was McGuire, 2nd Delilah, 3rd Rye and 4th Do e.
Sunday’s conforma on match was judged by Lisa Saunders of Stardust whippets. Her 1st place dog was Jackson, 2nd Tailor, 3rd Ryder and 4th Rye.
We appreciate everyone’s hard work over the weekend because as you know you cannot put on a race meet without everyone pitching in and working double du es!! Thanks to Julie Poole our official photographer who took some awesome photos that are posted on the GRR Facebook page, please stop by and look. Lastly we could not hold the meet with‐out this great loca on so thank you again to Dave’s family and One Day Farms for le ng us use this great space. Hope to see some new faces at our next race meet in June. ‐ Georgia Rag Racing

MID‐ATLANTIC WHIPPET RACING ASSOCIATION FT MOTT, NJ
April 30/May 1, 2011
T he weather gods decided that we here in the Mid‐Atlan c had suffered enough weekends of terrible weather, and it was me for a truly gorgeous late spring week‐end. Couldn't have come at a be er me, as our racing condi ons were perfect at
Ft. Mo ‐‐cool mornings followed by warm, partly‐cloudy a ernoons, and a fast firm track which was not too hard and dry. It's a pleasure to just be outside on a glorious weekend like the one that we had, and even be er if we get to enjoy seeing our dogs run and hang‐ing out with friends. As usual, I begin by thanking key people‐‐Carl Morgan ran the box both days. Kristen Fred‐ericks and Connie Aus n ran the lure. Linda Solano and Pat Spinazzola helped coordinate the finish line. Diana I er came for most of the day on Saturday JUST to help line judge, which was most appreciated. Brian and Fran from Playdate came to do match racing on Sunday and worked very hard with line judging and some boxing. And we can't leave off our trophy chairman, Terri DeLuca, who always brings a nice pile of loot for our winners, and Bheki and Ma who donated some really great toys and prizes to add to the mix. Ste‐ve Damron was very good to come and help with the foul judging all weekend considering he was recovering from foot surgery, which meant he had to really take it easy. Deb Han‐na, who came to prac ce Puppy Rene, also worked very hard at the finish line.
Saturday saw a phenomenal entry of 35 Adult Whippets plus a lot of prac ce dogs arrive at the field, all eager to shake off whatever remained of cold weather rust. Many of our MAWRA dogs are also entered in mid‐May's ASFA Interna onal Invita onal, and so com‐ple ng the meet this weekend was part of their condi oning scheme to get prepped for that very important compe on. We had only two MAWRA match race entries‐‐Steve Damron's Dilana ran undefeated over Carl Morgan's Chaco, and a good me was had by both. The final touches of box breaking took place for our Sunday puppy entries, as well. When I looked at the overall entry as I made the board tags, I saw a number of dogs who looked likely to contend for ARX points on the weekend based on their recent history of taking points running against each other. These dogs included Cruz, Bacon, Ace, Tailor,

and Garcia. We also had a couple of wild cards in our FTE's and a few dogs who had done well in the past but might not be in racing condi on yet. The NARX point picture pi ed Beau against Ziggy, two dogs who had never met, and I was eager to see how our domi‐nant east coast racer would fare against new compe on. Bomber and Stretch looked likely to contend for the bo om NARX, based on their recent past history, but Bomber has been beaten by Bacon for NARX points on one occasion, so that was by no means a sure thing. Naturally, I ran all the permuta ons in my head and the only thing I knew would be the case is that any dog to get one of the two top sets of ARX points would have to have four perfect races for that dog, with clean trips and great breaks, so close was our compe‐
on likely to be for those three sets of points. I was also looking forward to seeing the FTE's and the greener racers and if they had con nued to improve since their last ou ngs. I wasn't disappointed in anything that transpired over the weekend, as there were lots of surprising finishes and the new racers all did very well and con nued to show improve‐ment. The PR tle program is either working really well to encourage people to keep older com‐pe tors in, OR the number of people who wanted four programs to condi on their dogs was very high for this par cular meet, as we had NO involuntary scratches. On Saturday, one dog sadly was injured (one of our FTE's, Boo‐Boo, later diagnosed with a fracture in one of her toes), and had to be paddock scratched when she came out for the third pro‐gram lame a er her rest period. We also had a DNF when one of our senior compe tors (maybe having a lure coursing flashback) decided to go wide around the judges and did not finish between the line judges. But otherwise, Saturday was a clean day with no planned scratches. Sunday, we had one dog scratched a er he had some abrasions on his pads since he was being shown the following weekend. And we had another DNF, this one following a collision out of the box that le the dog a li le disoriented and with the wind knocked out of him a er a rolling tumble. But happily, he was fine to run the next two pro‐grams. Really amazing to have only one dog scratched each day.

April 30/May 1, 2011
Saturday, the first High Point proved only somewhat predic ve of the rest of the day, as 6 A racers broke for the first of eight really compe ve High Point races. Beau proved his me le by winning the meet outright, winning the first three pro‐grams, and then tying Ziggy, who finished 2nd, in the fourth High Point. He is cer‐tainly an impressive dog and he is in p‐top condi on, and I am happy he is really ge ng campaigned this year. Bomber
was very clever. He gave up the 3rd in the first HP to Stretch, who he wished joy of the cheap High Point, then proceeded to win the 2nd co‐Feature and cruise to two more 3rd place HP finishes to collect the 1 NARX point. The ARX picture was considerably more muddled. I had expected that Tailor, coming off his recent finishes in Georgia, would be the most compe ve of the Licketysplits for the ARX points. If our spoiler ARX dogs in the co‐feature had done their job of spoiling, all three unfinished dogs in the fourth HP would have ended up winning the points, Tailor among them, but no, it was Elsa, snatching Tailor's chance at points away by winning the co‐feature over three ARX dogs, and Bacon. Rye, 4th in the final high point, delighted her owners by running her best meet to date, earning 5 ARX. Elsa, a half point behind, took away 3 ARX, and Cruz, who is inching EVER closer, finished 5th in the final HP to grab the final 1 ARX. Only 1.5 points to go now‐‐would Sunday be the day? Stay tuned... The ARX point picture was not the only topic of specula on. We had a very hotly‐contested Turtle prize to hand out. Some individuals who talked a lot of trash about what great turtle contenders they were bringing ended up with unacceptably high C scores, and therefore not eligible for Turtle prizes. It rapidly became clear that 7 year old Josephine and 4 year old Scarle were the cream of the Turtle crop. I had my money on Josephine, but her DNF took her out of the hunt, and Erin and her Scarle proudly claimed the prize a er four hard, clean, and enthusias c runs for no points by Scarle .

We can't leave out our FTE's‐‐Moe, Riggs, and Boo‐Boo. Moe and Riggs both finished the day as C racers with five points and all clean good hard runs. Boo‐Boo, sadly, was injured, but she was a clean and enthusias c racer un l that happened. It was also good to see Faye‐Faye returning to form a er the rather bad injury she had last year. New
a endees Marge and Rick Conta and Lauri Aus n and Marc Stumbo were excellent addi‐ons to the crew and I was happy their dogs ran well. Marc took lots of photos and I have
already posted a link to the MAWRA and CWAracing lists. Marge Conta judged a nice entry of qualifiers at the meet match, finding her winner and DPC leg recipient in "Preston", handled by his owner Melanie Merrion. Second place went to Ta oo, who showed beau fully for her owner Linda Solano. Third place to Moe, shown by yours truly, and fourth to Bacon. Sunday saw the Mariner Ice Creams challenging the Licketysplits a li le harder for the ARX
points. I've heard of waking up and smelling the bacon, but Sunday, Bacon woke up and smelled the finish line a li le more, and ended up taking the top set of 5 ARX. In the fourth program, the biggest drama was in the co‐feature. The two Ice Cream boys were in the final HP and mathema cally could not be denied ARX points if they simply finished, but the co‐feature contained four unfinished dogs with 10 points each, any of which could take the either the top or middle set of ARX points, and poten al spoiler Faye‐Faye. We made sure that we had extra people at the finish line for that one. Elsa, who had already tasted success by winning Saturday's final co‐feature, stuck with that strategy, and won

over her brother Tailor to nip in for the 3 ARX. Garcia had a difficult break and had to se le for the bo om 1 ARX point, but s ll, a much improved day for cute li le Garcia to join his big, white brother in the points. Finishes were close and the line judges had all they could handle. Carl got his video camera working and it was very interes ng to see that in at least one case, the es called by the line judges were verified on the video as be‐ing "true es". For awhile there, we wondered if Cruz or Faye‐Faye would ever manage to get un‐ ed. Beau won the meet, winning three of the four High Points. Ziggy was 2nd again for 3 NARX and Bomber ran 3rd in all four HP's for the bo om 1 NARX. We saw an exci ng new FTE in Carola Beranek's Maki, who put up a very impressive 10 points in his first meet, and we saw three good puppy races, with Rene topping his sister all three mes. Sunday, Josephine would not be denied her turtle‐‐finishing in the middle of the track but trailing Scarle in for zero points in the final program. We had four match racers‐‐Dilana won undefeated, followed by Charlie and Darla. Marcel was scratched prior to the final program, but he was fourth. The match was judged by local Whippet owner/exhibitor Shelbi Englemann. Shelbi found her winner and DPC leg recipient in Bacon, handled by Kristen Fredericks. What a great day for Bacon! Second in the match went to Tailor, shown by Bheki, third to Josephine, shown by me, and fourth to puppy Tang, shown by Terri.
Congratula ons to all the winners and thank you SO much to everyone for the willing way you all pitched in and helped with the meet. It's a lot of work and every person is im‐portant and needed to keep things running smoothly! ‐ Karen Lee

O n Saturday, the weather was looking not so good in the morning but luckily turned out much nicer than expected. It was almost warm near the end, and the rain gear was slowly taken off.
We had 23 dogs and one puppy to start the day of racing. Once again it was a day of very close racing, and the meet and the ARX points all came down to the final race. Marshall and Daltrey were trading wins in the high points races with FTE Merlin giving his half brothers a run for their money. The box break and box number is the key with these boys. It will be exci ng racing to come once Merlin get more confidence with running in traffic. Marshall won the final high point and ed with Daltrey for the meet win and split the NARX points. FTE Merlin had a great first day out of CWA racing, finishing the day in the third spot and took home his first set of 4 ARX points. Zuri also had a tough ba le with Pete for the bo om set of ARX points, Zuri was able to win the 2 ARX points by finishing the day one point up on Pete. We were very lucky with the weather: just as the last run of the third program finished it started to rain rather hard but we had already stopped for lunch and luckily it had rained itself out by the me we finished ea ng. We had a great selec on of food with potluck award going to Janet’s Toblerone cheesecake, though it was a very hard choice as every‐thing served was delicious. Saturday’s match judge was Penny Wilmot, whose winner was Smoke followed by Donald second, Kai third, and Logan fourth.
Sunday was a great day for racing with no rain, which was a long me coming around here; with we er then usual weather this spring it was nice to see the sun and not wear so many layers.
Saturday match line‐up: judge Penny Wilmot and #1 Smoke, #2 Donald, #3 Kai, #4 Logan

We had a slightly bigger entry Sunday with 25 dogs and 1 puppy. The meet ran very fast with racing being wrapped up in record me, and by 2:30 the last of the prizes were hand‐ed out (might have had something to do with a playoff hockey game)! It was another day of very ght racing between all the grades and races; the line judges had their work cut out for them. Sunday’s meet winner was Daltrey, who took the top set of 4 NARX, followed by Marshall in second spot, taking the bo om set of 2 NARX points. Merlin had another good day of racing and picked up the top set of 4 ARX points and is already over half way to finishing his ARX tle in his first weekend racing! The ba le for the bo om set of ARX points con n‐ued between Zuri and Pete but today was Pete turn to take his first set of 2 ARX points. Lunch was full of great food and fabulous company with the winner of the potluck being Karen Greenwood’s terrific chicken wings. Today’s match was judged by Heather Leinbach, her match winner was Marshall followed by Logan second, Smoke third and Donald fourth.
I want to say a BIG THANK YOU to everyone who pitched in and made the meet run so smoothly and quickly. You guys were great! Thanks for all you hard work, every bit counts from the box operator Randy, lure operator Peter, Steve for bringing back the lure, all the line judges Nancy, Linda, Karen, Janet, Jessica, Emily, Ellen, and I can’t forget to men on all those who helped load or catch dogs, no ma er how easy or hard they were to handle. Job well done to both dogs and their owners.
Sunday match line‐up: judge Heather Leinbach and #1 Marshall, #2 Logan, #3 Smoke, #4 Donald

A Race Meet Review – From the Naughty Side
L et me give you a bit of my history, last year, my sister went to pass me in a race meet and, well you know how it gets when
your sister disses you and you’ve just had enough, I just turned to her and bumped her a li le and told her to stop trying to outdo me all the me. Well, for some reason some people called foul judges thought that wasn’t good, so I saw a big DQ by my name. Why is all this important? Well it was really just a momentary impulse. I’ve been good this sea‐son as I wanted to run again. It’s a bit like being an addict. It does some mes feel good to bump
a dog that is just pissing you off, so I really have to stay focused. Anyway, I’ve gone thru the anger management program and I’m on track. So I was very excited to be able to run in the first meet around this area. I also knew my very favorite person might come down just to see me. She has my mom and has one of my lesser sister’s but she is really my very fa‐vorite person. For some reason, the human household members were doing clean up. I really thought everything looked fine but they felt like they had to prepare. So it was forecasted to rain a bit on Thursday but those weather people had been wrong the week before so who knows if it would really rain or not. Well it did kind of come down hard. I have a housemate dog (I won’t men on his name) who was hiding in one of his condo boxes because he doesn’t like thunder so it was one of those loud rainy storms. I of course was not at all nervous. When the Friday‐mow‐the‐lawn expedi on started it was “Oh no, there is standing water on the track! There is standing water all over the place! What do we do?!” I thought to myself: “you humans fix this ‐ I so want to run!” I told them to get a grip and calm down, use those big brains you have. A er careful thought, they managed to fix up a 150 yd course that didn’t involve a water obstacle, but it took a li le landscaping and clipping to accomplish. Whew I would s ll get to run. On Friday I saw the humans having their pre‐race barbeque grill meal. I mean come on, they aren’t doing any of the running but they got chicken and ribs. Did they share? Not really. Oh well that was ok as I was s ll excited about running but it would have been nice to have a rib or two.
C‐U RACING ROCHESTER, ILLINOIS May 28/29, 2011
On Saturday they decided to sit me out and wait to run me ll Sunday when one of my lesser sisters was not running. That sucked, but on Saturday I got to see HER!!! Mary Huff of course loves me the very best and was very excited to see me. I wagged my tail a li le to let her know I cared but tried not to be overly exuberant. There were 14 dogs on Saturday all excited about being able to run. They were leaping in the air and barking, a li le undignified but they certainly were happy. There were two routes to the start line, one was down a path near the poison ivy and one was the short cut thru the water hazards. Personally I’m not sure why anyone wouldn’t want to get that feel of the mud between their toes; it is so glorious ‐ the only thing be er is to get a good worm roll in as well. I could kind of hear the racing from my perch in the van. There were many puppies to prac ce between the races, one turned around in the box…rookie move! At one point I heard it raining really loud, the rain drops were about 3 inches across I think…Don’t tell an‐yone but I was actually kind of glad I wasn’t walking down to the race track in that one, those humans were star ng to look a li le bedraggled and ge ng a li le whiny. I’m all for a li le light rain but when it really comes down it gives me a bad hair day. I heard thru the grapevine that Rafa was first, Ziggy was second, Tala was third and Brazen was fourth. Rafa and Ziggy got the NARX points and Tala and Nado got the ARX points. My lesser sister, who wasn’t in shape yet (she always had a bit of trouble doing her workouts, she was always talking to the boys instead), did three programs and finished in fi h. Not a bad showing for the family. A puppy named Gentry ran well all day and did not turn around in the box and had such fun leaping on the bunny. Conforma on was fun to watch as the people and dogs squished/slogged thru the grass. I have to say a few looked a bit like wet rats. Kathleen Stevens, a flat coat owner, was judg‐ing the conforma on match and decided on Sly, Brazen, Rafa and Fanta as her favorites.

Then came the food, this is where I really wish I was human or could change into human form for just awhile. I smelled turkey, there was some kind of salads (not my favorite part of a meal), baked beans, some cheesy potato things and some lovely lemon pie and Dolly bars (again, I really am more a protein kind of lady, the turkey smelled divine). There were the customary wrapped packages for prizes. There were three men at the event and the rest were ladies. This has bearing on one of the packages chosen. My very favorite person donated a very lovely pink purse. If I was a person I would certainly have loved that purse. She thought “well, with all the women at the event what would be the chances that a man would pick that?” Well, I have to say my owner, Ule, was most pleased to have picked the package with the purse, he promptly called it his man bag. He was al‐ready planning to buy some nice pink shoes and pants to go with it when another person, who shall remain nameless, shamelessly said she wanted a swap and took it from him. I thought that was a bit cruel of her when she saw how excited he was about the purse… I thought he might cry but he stayed strong. There was another gi that was a Parrot with a squeaker and a crunchy squish in it that changed several hands! Everyone seemed a bit red and it rained a li le more but then stopped. Everyone went to sleep but I was so excited that I couldn’t sleep a wink. I kept thinking about leaping out of the box in such a graceful forceful manner, ahead of all those other dogs and racing down the track to the finish line in my beau ful jacket. I just thought about that over and over. I knew the bunny was very pink and pre y to chase. The humans are not really very imagi‐na ve and just have it going in a straight line. Personally I think they should take it thru the woods and out the other side and thru the fence since that is what the real bunnies always do to me but it’s ok to prac ce going straight anyway, it builds up strength for when the real bunnies come out. On Sunday there were 11 of us to run. I could hardly wait ll it was my turn to go. I went walking down in my finest blanket, stru ng my stuff just a bit. I think the other dogs were a bit in midated, I don’t do any of the name calling at the box though; that’s just not my style. We went into the boxes and out I went flying flying flying, what a glorious me. I think I won that one but I can’t really remember it was all so divine. The next race I had a different color blanket and had to go down with two brindle males, I knew I’d probably be seeing a lot of brindle bu on this one but s ll it was exci ng. As I leaped out of the box in fine form and began running down the track, some brindle dog kept trying to get over to the other side of the track thru me. Now, I began to get a li le annoyed, but I remember what they told me in the anger management program. When you feel the urge to tell off the dog next to you, remember the big DQ le ers and the shame and embarrassment you felt and snap the li le wrist band that tells you to stop thinking those thoughts and imagine jumping on the bunny at the end. It worked!!! I was
C‐U RACING ROCHESTER, ILLINOIS May 28/29, 2011
very good. It didn’t hurt so much that they were ahead of me, I s ll ran the most beau ful‐ly of any dog. My family decided that I had done such a good job that it was probably best to stop there (my wristband had broken I had snapped it so hard) so I had re red to my van to think about how well I had run. In the last program of the day, Pibb had to have the race of his life to get the ARX points. He was in our van and I talked to him about technique, how to imagine yourself ahead of those other dogs and to believe in yourself. I’m very sure it was all my ps and pointers that allowed him to place third in that race and win his ARX points. I have to admit to hav‐ing a bit of a crush on him. He is quite handsome. Hopefully, he’ll remember how helpful I was and in the future when he sees me, perhaps he’ll even bring me a bouquet of liver. Sorry I got a li le distracted from my story. Where was I… Oh yes, in the end it was Ziggy, Rafa, Pibb and Sly in first thru fourth. Ziggy and Rafa got the NARX points and Pibb got the first set of ARX points. For conforma on, Gail Wegner selected Gentry, Brazen, Johnny and Rafa.
The humans re red to eat their post‐meet food, again the lovely smell of turkey wa ed thru the air but I don’t think there was much of an effort to make sure all the fantas c race dogs got goodies. If I had one thing to say about what could be improved it would be that more thought should go into the menu for the DOGS! A er all we work very hard, would it be so hard for someone to bring liver treats, biscuits, turkey, steak, chewies and a bit of ham for the racing dogs. I don’t think so. I’m thinking it would be best if this was a rule change, make it mandatory that the second FIRST class ci zens, the Whippets, should get what they deserve when they run all day. I will leave you with one final thought…. A pot‐luck for ALL and for all a good night.

CanCh Prior HH Silver Lining, CD, FCh, OTRM, CGC, AV Wren was my first whippet, my first show dog, my first race dog, my first champion, my foundation bitch. She
did everything I ever asked, and was my ideal in every way, from her glorious whippet type, to her fierce athleticism and her impeccably biddable whippet temperament. I could not imagine a better introduction to the breed. Although
my main performance interest at the time was lure coursing, once we tried racing, we fell in love with the sport together.
At the time she was running, my preference was for the oval and I did very little straight racing, so although she was a multi‐top 10 winner on the oval track running in the competitive Pacific Northwest, she never earned any CWA titles.
However, in her limited CWA career, she was a CWA match winner and went on to produce very well for the CWA program. She was the dam of two ARXs ‐ Serendipity Road Runner, ARX, CanFCh, PR and Serendipity Nighthawk, FCh, ARX, DPCX, TRPX, PR‐5, SRM, OTRM‐2, CGC ‐ both of whom were also CWA match winners. Her third CWA match winning offspring was 2007’s #2 and 2008’s #1 CWA conformation whippet, CanCh Serendipity Skylark, FCh, DPC, TRPX, PR‐2, SR, OTR.
She was the dam of show champions, racing champions and lure coursing champions in each of her two litters.
Oh, Wren, how hard it was to say goodbye. I will never forget you and I will see you again. Until then, I will always remember you young and lithe, willing and able, agile and strong, cheerful and charming, and always, as ever, my best friend.
