We keep our promises

How to keep your promises and create trust for long-term customership and international co-operation? this is the subject of the For Surface Protection magazine, reveal-

ing the latest news of our internationalisation and the profound understanding of the special needs of this industrial branch.

internationalisation is one of our main strategic objectives. We want to serve as a strong partner with those engineering workshops and metal industry companies operating on the inter-national market.

at the moment we are the market leader of the surface coat-ing processes field in the Nordic countries. We have reclaimed our leading market position with promises, which have been based on quality, reliability of deliveries, pro-environmental pro-cesses and working safety.

On page 4 we tell about our cargotec companionship, of which we have been especially enthusiastic about. We are in-creasing work shifts and personnel in our new country company in Northern Poland during the spring 2011. Our long-standing domestic partner cargotec showed a green light to the co-opera-tion in Poland last autumn.

For a long time already, we have taken environmental aspects into consideration in all our activities. We are committed to pollutant-free work processes, re-cycling and safe storaging. On pages 8-9 production manager Juha Anttila, who is responsible for the heavy components of the Konecranes ltd. hyvinkää fac-tory, describes the meaning of our co-operation very well:

“We receive environmentally friendly surface coating know-how, and with quality development added value which benefits our customers. the crucial factor in the surface coating process is the rapid throughput time, which becomes to be a competitive element in factory production.”

We have been responsible in the turku shipyard in Finland for the surface coatings of Oasis of the Seas and allure of the Seas in for instance such areas where customers move. On pages 10-11 we tell how the very tough requirements were set up concerning the surface quality of the largest luxury cruiser of all times. the surface had to endure the very demanding damp, salty and warm conditions in the caribbean.

the strong responsible surface coating know-how has been acclaimed also internationally, and that is why we have estab-lished a new Engineering division. the main objective is to con-sult the customers e.g. in quality- and environmental evaluation.

Please turn the page and take a tranquil look at our company news. We are ready to keep our promises in being able to offer in a unique way benefit and value in industrial surface coating processes and value-added services on the international market. Please contact us to discuss more!

With co-operative regards

FSP plans to double its personnel to ca. ten employees in Poland during spring 2011. at this time there are five surface coating workers in Po-land, lead by foreman Daniel Neryng.

he began with FSP in august last year, at the same time as FSP began to take responsibility of the finishing paint of the cargotec-assembled container spreaders and loading cranes. the work profile also includes the decal work and casings.

”We have been pleased with the rapid throughput of the work process. during the spring we will start the surface coating work of straddle carriers and that is why we are increasing the working pace and changing to two work shifts,” declares Neryng.

Ismo Rojo, the executive of foreign activities, considers fast throughput in factory production as a competitive factor. FSP has, according to Rojo, ensured its operations to such a steady level that it has coat-surfaced ca. 60 container spreaders per month.

ENVIrONmENTAl PrOTECTION AS A CENTrAl FOCuSafter the surface coating process in Stargard Szczeci ’nsk, FSP’s employees also examine the work quality in co-operation with the cargotec personnel. at the same time FSP draws up the required documents according to the regulations of the authorities and the environmental clearance.

being still rather young, Neryng, who works in Poland as a foreman, will have a long career in the surface coating branch.

Neryng, being now in his 30s, began with FSP in au-gust last year, at the same time as FSP began to take responsibility of the finishing paint of the cargotec-assembled container spreaders and terminal tractors. before starting with FSP, he worked for two years as a painter in a shipyard in Northern Poland and five years as a surface coater worker in Norway where he spe-cialised in oil drilling drafts. he especially emphasises environmental protection, which he sees as a central area of FSP’s expertise, compared to the other compa-nies operating in the field. ■

Jukka Laakkonen, the chief executive of hydro-line ltd, believes that they have gained advan-tages by co-operating with FSP in Siilinjärvi,

Finland. ”We chose FSP as a partner for our hydraulic

cylinder surface coating because we wanted to rationalise the surface coating of our products. We were convinced that FSP has the ability to implement the painting of the cylinders according to a certified managing system i.e. with quality and environmental soundness," states laakkonen.

the requirements for choosing a companion are strict, because hydroline designs and manufactures high quality, durable hydraulic cylinders meant for demanding use.

the aim of the companionship is to fulfil strictly the very quality and environmental requirements, which benefit hydroline’s domestic and international customers. hydroline’s customers are leading machine and equipment manufacturers in their fields all around the world.

the products are designed and often also tailored for demanding ap-plications serving e.g. vehicle, quarrying, forest machinery, tractor, lifting, and transporting equipment industry and earthworks engineering. Nine out of ten of the cylinders go indirectly to the export market.

hydroline manufactures roughly 130,000 cylinders per year, so the sur-face coating throughput time is essential in the factory facilities. ■

The competition was arranged during September 1st – december 31st on the Finnish work sites of the member companies of the Federation of Surface

contractors. the jury especially appreciates FSP’s high devotion

to the industrial safety issues concerning the whole personnel. this becomes evident e.g. in the availability of high quality safety equipment, wide work health care and continuous activities towards work welfare.

For the competition FSP entered a winter garden project, residing at the töölönlahti area in helsinki, where the steel surface area to be handled consists of 4,500 m2.

the project employs 3–8 of FSP’s surface coating workers for about half a year. the working site was, according to the jury, very well organised and made it possible to work safely from the beginning. the attitude towards safety was clearly positive among the working community. according to the spirit of the competition the jury also gave constructive feedback concerning cleanness and at the same time developing security. ■

It's a question of a remarkable debut, because no-where in Finland has similar surface coating service been available to such an extent nationwide. as the

biggest operator in the field FSP offers the services of the division everywhere in Finland and even abroad if needed.

the aim is to transfer the provision of services closer to the customers, whose expectations FSP intends to listen to with an even more sensitive ear. FSP’s strategic objec-tives, which focus on continuously developing new ways to operate and renewing the surface coating methods currently in use, are the starting point.

THE INCrEASINg ENVIrONmENTAl rEquIrEmENTS ”the results of our survey support the start of the new Engineering division, because customers want a com-panion with high level knowledge and know-how about quality and environmental systems. the key benefit will soon be an optimised throughput time, which is an essential competitive factor in industrial production,” crystallises Jukka Kinnunen, the technology manager of the FSP Engineering division.

as one example Kinnunen brings out expert services concentrating on environmental methods and stand-ards, which he strongly believes to grow rapidly. it has been a trend for a long time now, that new surface coating methods produce less and less evaporating organic hydrocarbon.

ClOSEr TO THE CuSTOmEr”We are taking a step with our strategy to get even closer to the customer and develop our network. We are waiting for encouraging results e.g. from Frosio-inspections and other auditing services, in which we have succeeded excellently both on the domestic and on the international market like in indonesia and china,” continues Kinnunen.

he profiles as typical customers in practice all metal, and engineering shop branch companies, who want to concentrate on their own core expertise, raise productivity and decrease total expenses. the basic work covers e.g. a field check, choosing of the surface coating systems and methods, logistics planning and inspections.

”We inspect e.g. the whole quality production ability of the surface coating chain and explain to the cus-tomer the authorities’ requirements and standards,” clarifies Kinnunen.

Many phases in auditing

FSP has carried out Frosio-inspections of surface coating processes for its customers both in Finland and in the international market. during the inspec-

tion project FSP audits the quality level of the sub-contractors’ processes, makes observations about the quality control and points out possible drawbacks if necessary.

during the auditing on site the sub-contactors quality certificates, process descriptions, production facilities, surface coating systems and devices are evaluated. as a Frosio-inspector the auditor checks out the actual painting, conditions and quality control and backup.

the survey also includes the documentation, walk-through of the whole delivery process and drawing up of an English version of the audition report. inspec-tion objects include e.g. demanding surface coating classes, which can be for instance “off-shore” objects, ship industry, nuclear power plants and heavy chemical industry. ■

The overall rating stayed at a relatively good level just like the year before. Four out of five respond-ents were ready to recommend FSP to other

service acquirers. this became evident in the FSP’s customer survey.

When comparing the ratings of the 2010 and 2009 surveys with each other, it can be seen that the price competitiveness rating of FSP has the greatest increase. the respondents feel that FSP has strength-ened its position as a forerunner company, an unpar-alleled developer of surface coating methods, as a documenter and as a company of high expertise.

the survey contained questions concerning factors that relate to the company profile of FSP. according to the respondents FSP is an expert company that under-stands the customer’s needs, is reliable, draws up clear offers and is capable of wide delivery entities.

it was delightful to read in the survey that customers regard FSP’s corporate activities to be more responsible than ever. the rating rose clearly in being such a fore-runner company, which emphasizes an environment-aware production and takes care of the environmental protection in its projects.

the survey was carried out in 2010 and was responded to by 107 FSP’s customers and business partners. ■

Konecranes, one of the world’s leading lifting equip-ment manufacturers, signed an agreement of co-operation with FSP concerning surface coating

operations at the hyvinkää factory facilities in January 2011. according to the agreement FSP is responsible for the surface coating processes of crane and com-ponent manufacturing in the two paintshops at the Konecrane ltd.’s hyvinkää production plant.

the agreement ensures a better utilisation rate at the Konecrane ltd.’s hyvinkää production plant and makes it possible to continuously develop the surface coating process.

quAlITy AND KEEPINg THE SCHEDulES AS TrumPSFSP was responsible for the surface coating in certain areas in the allure-project’s build-up phase. these included e.g. the swimming pool area and the eye-catching central Park. the work also included other areas - e.g. the aqua-theatre - and the ship’s chest bulk-head and part of the balconies. altogether FSP handled about 50.000 m2 of surface.

in ship building the entity is built from blocks. in sur-face coating the block painting is done first, including the spray washing of the surfaces and painting accord-ing to a separate plan. the blocks are joined together on the building pool and then the block seams and the bottom of the ship are painted ready. From the building pool the ship is transferred to the build-up place, where the outer and inner parts are painted.

the surface coating of a ship more than 360 metres long requires the work input of more than one compa-ny. there were six Finnish companies of the branch al-together working on allure. there were at best around 30 FSP employees at the working site.

Jukka Lähde, the chief executive of FSP Finnish Steel Painting’s shipyard division, is satisfied with the project. the lessons gathered in the surface

coating of the Oasis of the Seas cruiser were fluently put to use in the sister ship project. as the strengths of FSP he lists the reliability of delivery and quality.

“Our co-operation with Stx has already been going on in different projects for decades. large and de-manding surface coating works are possible only for a company of a certain size, who has on its pay-roll the topmost experts,” summates lähde.

the field has strict authority regulations and they are readily seen as a minimum level, which still has to be raised higher,” tells asikainen.

the Stx Finnish shipyards have an hSE operational system, which enhances the industrial safety and environmental awareness and complies with the international iSO 14 001 and OhSaS 18001 standards.

in addition to the corrosion resistance the paint coat must look good on a luxury ship. the surface coating thus includes many phases, which aim to an even and durable coating. there are usually 1–5 thin coatings, and the thickness of one coating is 40–1,000 micrometers. before the last paint layer the surface is usually rubbed if needed in the demanding passenger areas. the spreading of the paint is usually done with a high pressure sprayer, roller or a paintbrush. the tools are chosen carefully to obtain the required surface quality.

“the allure project was finished on schedule and fulfilled the strict qual-ity criteria. thanks of that goes to the project management of Stx and to our competent employees,” states lähde.

Stx Finland and viking line have signed a preliminary agreement of a new environmentally friendly, new generation cruise ship. the agreement between Stx Finland ltd. and viking line ltd. also includes an option for a sister ship. the price of the ship is ca. 240 million euros. the ship is to be built on the turku shipyard and it is supposed to be delivered at the beginning of 2013. ■

“the advantages of FSP were keeping to the schedules and high quality co-operation with the Stx person-nel. information flowed smoothly and the professional foremen of FSP ensured that the work went according to the plans at the busy work site. the weekly meet-ings helped us to keep up with the different phases of the work site as well as possible challenges,” sums up Sami Asikainen, the surface coating responsible of Stx Europe.

THE SurFACE muST bE bOTH DurAblE AND bEAuTIFul in allure e.g. high dry matter content two-component paints were used, because they harden through chemi-cal reaction. also water-downed paints were used in painting inner and outer parts. the most important function of the surface coating is to hold the surface corrosion resistant, and processing allure, which sails in the tropical climate, was one of the most challenging tasks. in the caribbean the climate is salty and warm.

“the shipyard is up-to-date in environmental and indus-trial safety issues.
