A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT AND CHANCELLOR
Dear Friends of the Foundation,
With your help, the Foundation continues to change the lives of students, improve their educational experience, and inspire others to build a stronger community. This annual report provides just a few examples of how your generosity and support have a lasting impact. We can’t thank you enough. Without your donations—both large and small—the Foundation simply would not be able to help these students and further the goals of our district.
For an SCCCD student the path to a career can seem impossibly long. Our district’s dedicated faculty and staff teach students that every little bit counts. With every exam they pass and every course they complete, students are one step closer to a degree or certifi cate. They are one step closer to a career. They are one step closer to becoming role models and positively infl uencing their communities.
It is no different for friends of the Foundation. Every little bit counts. For every gift of money, time, or resources, you are contributing to something greater than the sum of its parts. You are profoundly affecting the lives of students and, by extension, our own community and our own economy.
Some of our students are just out of high school, studying to transfer to a four-year college or university. Others are returning to college as adults after years spent working and raising families. Some are just returning from serving in the military. Our students are scholars, athletes, parents, and neighbors. Each one has unique challenges to overcome. The Foundation hopes to limit these challenges so all students have the opportunity to complete their education and become successful citizens.
The Foundation faces its own challenges, especially in times of economic hardship. When faced with such daunting obstacles, it is easy to become discouraged—to believe that one person can’t make a difference. However, as we’ve seen time and again, and as you’ll see in the stories on the following pages, every contribution truly does make a difference.
Every little bit counts.
Respectfully yours,
Gus BonnerPresident, State Center Community College Foundation
Deborah G. Blue, Ph.D.Chancellor, State Center Community College District

DONOR STORY: TRASH EQUALS TREASURE
DOROTHY “DOT” SEDLEY COLLECTS TRASH FOR CASHDorothy “Dot” Sedley is a regular fi xture on the Fresno City College campus. Many people wonder if Dot is homeless. She is a retired English professor who came from humble beginnings. Dot was born in Philadelphia in 1929 right after the stock market crash. She received her early education from an orphanage and went on to receive her master’s degree and start her own editing business. She taught for 23 years at West Virginia University before moving to Fresno. Dot doesn’t need to dumpster dive to make ends meet. She does it because she sees a golden opportunity and knows that every drop counts. Every dollar, every cent, every can, every bottle. So she collects the recyclables, cashes them in, and hands over checks to the SCCC Foundation. “She’s donated more than $40,000 over the last
several years! That doesn’t all come from cans and bottles, she has given of her own funds because she values education,” said Gurdeep S. HéBert, SCCC Foundation executive director. Dot has endowed her “Go Green Scholarship” and continues to support numerous programs at Fresno City College.
At 82 years old, with two replaced hips, she is agile enough to collect recyclables from all over campus. That’s a lot of work and a huge commitment, and she’s been at it for 15 years. We can all be a part of Dot’s recycling effort by bagging up our bottles and cans at home and in our offi ces so Dot can come by and pick them up!
To support Dot’s initiative please contact SCCC Foundation at (559) 244-5991 or send an email to [email protected].

STUDENT SUCCESS: A SUM AND ITS PARTS
FCC SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT CREATES HER OWN SCHOLARSHIP
Cassandra Mendez is well on her way to becoming the person she
dreams of being: “a well respected, infl uential, and intelligent university
professor with a love for education and a love of giving.”
After growing up in a rural area of Fresno with a strong work ethic, Cassandra completed her associate’s degree in liberal arts at Fresno City College, graduated magna cum laude for her bachelor’s degree in history from CSU, Fresno, and is currently working on her master’s degree in history from CSU, East Bay. The recipient of multiple scholarships at FCC, she also received the Graduate Equity Fellowship for her master’s program.
While attending CSU, Fresno she worked as a high school and college tutor. Cassandra didn’t work two jobs just to make ends meet as many college students do; she worked two jobs so she could start giving back to other students in need. “Thanks to the scholarships I received at Fresno City College, I knew I wanted to become a scholarship donor myself. I want to help students who have an innate desire to pursue a college education, but need that extra assistance to meet their educational goals,” said Cassandra.
So while completing her bachelor’s program and working two jobs, this dedicated young woman began a scholarship called the Cassandra Mendez Scholarship at Washington Union High School. This year two talented female high school students have received $200 from Cassandra’s scholarship fund.
Founding the scholarship has made a huge impact on Cassandra. “This scholarship experience has humbled me and made me realize that the love of education goes deeper than I expected. I hope my scholarship refl ects the giving person that I am and also the type of person I hope others may become.”
Cassandra has plans and dreams to fund scholarships at all the educational institutions she has attended, including Fresno City College, CSU, Fresno, CSU, East Bay, and other schools in her future. She says, “This is my way of saying thank you for giving me a quality education and at the same time giving future generations peace of mind knowing there will be scholarship funds available.”
Cassandra worked two jobs so she could start giving back to other students in need.

THE ZONE SCORES WITH FRESNO CITY COLLEGE STUDENT-ATHLETES Fresno City College athletic director Susan Yates wanted to create an academic support program for student-athletes to help them succeed, both inside and outside the classroom. Last year, she enlisted help from the counseling department and tutorial center to create The Zone. Funding for The Zone was made possible through generous donations from Rotary Club of Fresno, Dorothy “Dot” Sedley, faculty, staff, and administrators.
The Zone started as a pilot program for the football, softball, volleyball, and men’s basketball teams. It required the student-athletes to spend at least three hours each week working with tutors in the tutorial center, reading and writing center, or the computer lab. Students also committed to supervised study time and mandatory meetings with counselors. The Zone counselors made sure student-athletes were enrolled in the core classes they needed to transfer.
The Zone was a huge success in its fi rst year, especially for the men’s basketball team. Because of The Zone’s time commitments and the basketball players’ hard work and dedication, all nine of the eligible student-athletes received scholarships and transferred to four-year universities. “Their academic transcripts made the difference for them to receive their basketball scholarships,” said men’s basketball head coach Ed Madec. “This academic support will continue to make the difference in our student-athletes receiving scholarships for years to come.”
FCC has nearly 400 student-athletes among 19 different teams. This year, the focus of The Zone will be on freshman student-athletes. Funding for a program coordinator is a vital need in order for The Zone to be sustainable and successful.
If you’re interested in supporting The Zone, please contact SCCC Foundation at (559) 244-5991 or email [email protected].
DONOR STORY: EQUATION FOR SUCCESS
SUCCESS ZONE“The Zone helped keep me focused on my academics. I was able to get tutors in the classes that I struggled in. I would not have received my basketball scholarship if it were not for The Zone.”
-Earl Jefferson, former FCC men’s basketball player. Earl received a basketball scholarship to Texas Pan American University.
FCC Student Athletes take a time out to focus on academics.

VALLEY IRON OWNERS INSPIRED BY STUDENT STORIES SCCC Foundation Board member Lee Anne Briscoe and her husband, Jim Briscoe, have supported SCCCD for many years. What started as a scholarship program for their employees at Valley Iron Inc. has become a non-stop stream of student support.
Jim and Lee Anne personally read each and every scholarship application. They’re inspired and moved by the strength, courage, and optimism of the applicants and appreciate learning of the challenges these students face. Lee Anne said, “Overcoming an obstacle or challenge often becomes these students’ greatest strength. They now just need support and encouragement to continue their educational journey.” The Briscoe’s also enjoy staying in touch with students they have supported and getting updates on their progress.
Years ago Jim took a tour of the district and saw fi rst-hand how local community colleges offer quality training in vocations such as heavy equipment operation, aeronautics, nursing, and automotive. He saw the opportunity for students to get the quality training needed to enter the workforce. Deeply moved by the student stories, the Briscoe’s encouraged their employees to attend community college by offering employee scholarships. That gift evolved over time and they now fund 20 scholarships district-wide from $500 to $1,000 per scholarship each year.
The Briscoe’s philanthropic philosophy matches their business philosophy at Valley Iron. “Since 1983 our product is secondary to the service we provide to each and every customer. We reinvest in our business, our employees, and strive to implement change whenever it helps us work smarter,” said Lee Anne. And that’s what they are doing for SCCCD: being of service and reinvesting in their community and SCCCD students. All because they care.
BOARD SPOTLIGHT: DOUBLE DIGIT VALUE
ABOUT THE BRISCOE’S
Valley Iron Inc. was established in 1958 and purchased by the Briscoe’s in 1983. Valley Iron is now the largest independent and family owned steel distribution center in central and northern California. In 28 years Valley Iron has grown from nine to 91 employees with Jim’s sons, Noel and Nick, leading much of its recent growth.
ADDITIONAL SUPPORT
In addition to scholarships, the Briscoe’s have supported programs throughout the district. Their most recent gift to the SCCC Foundation assisted in the establishment of the Reedley College Career Center.

STUDENT SUCCESS: COUNTING BLESSINGS AND DREAMS
MADERA CENTER RECIPIENT OF THE BETTY UPTON LVN SCHOLARSHIP
Michelle Van Buren, recipient of the Betty Upton LVN scholarship,
decided to give up everything she knew to follow her dream of
becoming a nurse. She completed the Licensed Vocational Nursing
program at the Madera Center in December 2011.
Michelle completed her associate’s degree from FCC graduating with honors in 2008. When she found herself faced with major life changes she decided to take a big risk. “Starting a new single life, with my two 13-year-olds, I set out on a very scary journey. I quit the hairstylist job I knew and loved to pursue a dream—a dream of becoming a registered nurse. Life can be hard,” says Michelle, “so learn from your mistakes and the mistakes of others. Things may be scary, so just do it afraid!”
During her LVN program Michelle worked part-time as a hairstylist and offered respite care for her brother who cares for their father with Alzheimer’s disease. She also volunteered for the Veterans Hospital and A Child’s Dream of Fresno, a nonprofi t organization for Fresno’s homeless founded by her daughter. All this and she managed to maintain her GPA of honors status. She plans to be part of the new Registered Nursing (RN) Bridge Over Program at Madera Center in 2012 and then transfer to CSU, Fresno to pursue her bachelor’s degree in nursing and possibly a master’s in nursing.
“I want the people who give of their time, talent, and fi nances to know that they’re appreciated. I want them to know that they’re changing lives as well as giving back to their communities through their generosity,” said Michelle.
Seventy percent of the nurses in California received their education from community colleges.

BOARD SPOTLIGHT: EVERY GIFT HAS A RETURN ON INVESTMENT
CHRIS AND MICHELLE MORSE GET A HUGE RETURN ON THEIR INVESTMENT
Foundation board member and CPA Chris Morse and his wife Michelle
know the true return on an investment.
Donors give for a wide variety of reasons but the main motivation is the desire to help students get an advanced education. Chris said, “I believe the work we do at the Foundation in providing scholarships has a direct return to our local community. The education provided is the building block for students to transfer to a four-year college or university, or to enter the workforce immediately after completing vocational programs.”
The Morse’s have given more than $100,000 to the SCCC Foundation to date. Through their generous giving they are supporting students and making an impact on campus facilities, such as the Old Administration Building.
Chris is inspired by his wife’s success story.
Michelle graduated from high school in Madera with a 4.0 but was never encouraged to go to college. So she fi nished high school early and went directly into the workforce. For 17 years she worked full-time and took a class or two at Fresno City College to earn her associate’s degree. Michelle went on to complete a bachelor’s degree in business administration from CSU, Fresno with an emphasis in human resources. After attending both community college and a four-year college Michelle saw that the quality of education was very similar at both. She said, “community college offers such a high quality education, and people just don’t realize it. An education at a four-year institution is not necessarily better.” She added, “If it weren’t for community colleges, we wouldn’t have trained employees helping us run our businesses, hospitals, schools, government agencies, fi re departments, police force, national parks, etc. Not everyone should pay huge tuition fees at private colleges. That works for many people, but not for everyone.”
Chris has served as SCCC Foundation president and is currently serving as treasurer and committee chair for the Renaissance Feast for Scholars. Motivated from humble roots with no philanthropic history in his upbringing, Chris joined the board to support local community college students gain an advanced education as his wife has. After graduating from CSU, Fresno with a bachelor’s degree in business administration and accounting, Chris went on to become a founding partner of one of the top CPA fi rms in Fresno: Morse Wittwer Sampson LLP.
As a CPA, Chris understands that the return on his investment is much greater than the numbers he sees on his own fi nancials. He said, “Local businesses and individuals need to get behind the community colleges and assist these hard working individuals to obtain the education needed to succeed in today’s society. The only way we can raise the standard of living in central California is through education. The cost of providing assistance to a student at Fresno City College is far less than other institutions so your money goes much farther at community colleges.”
“I believe the work we do at the Foundation in providing scholarships has a direct return to our local community.”

STUDENT SUCCESS: A FORMULA YOU CAN COUNT ON
REEDLEY COLLEGE STUDENT RECEIVES FORESTRY SCHOLARSHIP
When wildfi res fl are up
and down the dry lands
of California we count on
skilled and brave forestry
workers, like Reedley
College student Kyle
Cook, to be there when
we need them.
Having grown up in the foothills of Sanger in the small town of Wonder Valley, close to Yosemite and the Sierra Nevada, Kyle Cook feels at home in the wilderness. He is dedicating his time and energy to caring for it. The committed 26-year-old is working toward his associate’s degree in forestry and natural resources at Reedley College with the generous support of a Foundation scholarship for forestry. Kyle was honored to receive the Irascible Order of Soararsis Forestry Scholarship aimed at supporting those pursuing careers in the National Parks Service, U.S. Forest Service, or forest management.
Kyle works at Fort Hunter Liggett as a fi refi ghter for the Department of Defense while attending Reedley College. Previously, he worked as a fi refi ghter for Yosemite National Park.
Kyle and his wife, Kathleen, love the mountains and they plan to start a family in the foothill area. He loves to fl y fi sh and says, “I take great pride in being able to teach and share my love for fl y fi shing with others.” Kyle hopes to pursue a bachelor’s degree after he graduates from Reedley College and would eventually like to work as a fi refi ghter for the National Park Service. Kyle said, “I am the fi rst person in my family to go to college so for me to graduate with a degree in forestry and natural resources is very important to me.”

STUDENT SUCCESS: GREATER THAN NOT LESS THAN
AFTER 16 YEARS OF SILENCE KAYLA IS USING HER VOICE TO HELP OTHERS
Kayla Takeuchi, a person with autism, is fi nally able to express herself
through the use of a keyboard after living a life of silence for 16 years.
“I was not able to tell my parents even the most urgent things, like being in pain. I was left lonely and frustrated beyond words,” said Kayla. Wrongly labeled as “mentally retarded” throughout elementary school, 20-year-old Kayla now feels free and empowered to share her thoughts through facilitated communication training. Kayla, a student at Willow International, is now giving back to the community by being an advocate for non-speaking children with autism.
Kayla uses an iPad with an app called Assistive Chat and has a facilitator who attends classes with her. With the technology and support, Kayla has transformed from a child who couldn’t communicate to a community college student with dreams and aspirations for her future. According to Kayla’s mother, Nadine, sign language was not an option for Kayla because she didn’t have a command of her fi ne motor skills. Facilitated communication training has been the best tool for her, however, it can be quite expensive due to the technology needs and the need for a facilitator that can cost more than $600 a week.
Kayla believes that every child should be allowed the opportunity to communicate. Kayla says, “I am here, I am a person, and I have dreams.” She has been sending this message through several nationwide presentations, including a presentation at the Facilitated Communication Institute at Syracuse University. She encourages parents of autistic children to not give up on their children. She doesn’t want her silent brothers and sisters to endure the pain and frustration that she felt.
For more information about Kayla go to http://kaylasvoice.com. To learn how you can support a scholarship at Willow International please call the SCCC Foundation at (559) 244-5991 or email [email protected].
STUDENT SUCCESS: GREATER THAN NOT LESS THAN
There are more than 5,000 students enrolled at Willow International, 50% of which receive fi nancial aid. However, there are only 10 scholarships that students can apply for. There are many students such as Kayla that would benefi t if more scholarships were available.

THE RENAISSANCE FEAST FOR SCHOLARS
On March 12, 2011, the seventh annual Renaissance Feast for
Scholars was held in the historic Fresno City College library. More than
$100,000 was raised to support scholarships for students at Fresno
City College, Reedley College, and the North Centers.
This themed event is the Foundation’s largest annual fundraiser. Each year the Queen travels to different parts of the world to celebrate the diversity of our district. This year she voyaged to India and we served a fabulous dinner with a hint of “masala.” We also featured authentic Indian entertainment and live and silent auctions.
