Youthful Field Hockey Squad Prepared for Start of 2011 Season

With the start of the 2011 field hockey season just around the corner, Bridgewater College head coach Allyson Kenyon has a number of positions that need to be filled before the team’s season opener on September 2 at Dickinson College.

The 2010 Eagles rolled out to an 8-2 overall record early on, with a victory over then-No. 20 St. Mary’s (Md.) before ending the season with a 9-9 mark and a loss in the first round of the ODAC Tournament in a slugfest at Eastern Mennonite.

Bridgewater returns two of its top five scorers, but will be without a pair of all-conference standouts due to graduation. Juniors Jennifer Bateman and Joan Burleson return to the fray and return a combined seven goals and six assists, but as a unit the Eagles return just 30% of their scoring from a season ago.

Despite their losses, the Eagles return a salty defensive front, a first team All-ODAC goalkeeper and a group of young and fiery players to the fold which will provide an outstanding base for the Eagles in 2011.

GoalkeeperSenior Taylor Waddell will return to the mix for her final sea-

son in the Crimson and Gold and will be the premiere keeper for the Eagles this season. Waddell returns after a nine-win season in which she posted a pair of shutouts and turned in a goals against average of under two. Last season, Waddell was named to the All-ODA C first team.

“We are so excited to have Taylor returning this season. Her steady presence in the cage has a great calming effect on our team and we’ll look for her to continue her dominance in the ODAC this season,” said Kenyon.

Sophomore Jessica Balsano also returns to the mix after seeing action in a pair of games last season and will be the backup to Waddell in the cage.

Defense Bridgewater’s defense will remain one of the top units in the ODAC after turning in a strong season in

2010. Last season, the Eagles allowed just under two goals per games as a team and turned in 11 defensive saves in the process.

Senior defender Megan Bach returns after starting all 18 games a season ago. Bach notched a pair of goals on the year, including in the game winner at home against Limestone, and was the cornerstone of the defense all season.

Juniors Jennifer Bateman and Joan Burleson also return after aiding the defense to a strong season in 2011. Last season, Bateman was the third-leading scorer on the Bridgewater offense with four goals, but the junior also notched three defensive saves in the process. Burleson notched four assists and a team-high six defensive saves en route to being named to the All-ODAC second team.

Two sophomores return alongside Bach, Bateman and Burleson among the traditional defenders, in Kath-leen Nuckols and Rebecca Lindgren. Nuckols and Lindgren return the most experience among the quartet with 25 combined games played from the 2010 season.

“We will certainly look to our seasoned defenders this year to lead the team and set the tempo this sea-son. Bach, Bateman and Burleson have played together for the past two years in the same positions and they are starting to read each other’s minds. It makes for a tough defensive line to break through and pro-

Senior goalkeeper Taylor Waddell returns to the mix after an outstanding 2010 season.

s2011 Season Previewvides super quick transitions to the attack,” commented Kenyon.

Kenyon also brings in a pair of newcomers in sophomore Gabrielle Shannon and Kaitlyn Harris.

Midfield Bridgewater’s midfield will be without the services of Kalah Hess for the first time in four years and will have

to quickly find a replacement for Hess, who commandeered the Eagles offense and was a four-time All-ODAC selection.

“We’ve been very blessed the last four years to have a player like Kalah running our transition game and anchoring our attack out of the midfield. Currently we are looking to Kelly Ryan to fill that vacancy. She had an excellent spring shifting from the outside mid to the center and has the fire power we’ll need in the circle,” said Kenyon.

Junior Kelly Ryan is expected to step into Hess’ role at the center midfield position and will be in control of the Eagles transition. Ryan started in 14 games a season ago.

Sophomores Colleen Dickson, Megan Gould and Jennifer Tompkins also return after being mainstays in the Bridgewater lineup as freshmen. Dickson and Tompkins both played in all 18 games, while Dickson recorded 16 starts and Tompkins started in four games. Gould saw action in 15 games on the season from her midfield post.

Kenyon also brought in a fresh face to the midfield in fresh-man Holly Daniels.

“Our midfield is very young, but play as if they have been to-gether for years. Anchoring our midfield are juniors Kelly Ryan and Joan Burleson, which should give us one of the strongest centers in the conference. Joining them are sophomores Meg Gould, Jennifer Tompkins and Colleen Dickson, who was a starter for us last year as well. All three have adjusted quickly to the speed of the college game and all have the defensive ability and offensive know how, to be a threat on either side of the ball,” said Kenyon.

Forwards Bridgewater will have to replace its two leading scorers from

a season ago in Kristen Combs and Brianna Jacques, and will look to some new faces to push the scoring front as the sea-son gets underway.

Sophomore Galen Goodman returns to the fray after seeing action in 12 of the Eagles 18 games from a season ago. Good-man posted her first career goal at home against St. Vincent.

Fellow sophomore Jennifer Tompkins returns after a solid freshman season for the Eagles. Tompkins. Played in all 18 games a season ago and notched a pair of assists along the way.

Finally, freshman Delaney Lockhart joins the Eagles attack from Howard High School in Ellicott City, Md. Fel-low freshman Holly Daniels and sophomore Gabrielle Shannon also could see time at the forward position.

“All the forwards have been battling hard in preseason to make an impression on the coaching staff, and even some defenders and midfielders are looking to move up to the front line as well. They are a young group, but all are hungry to prove themselves and take over the responsibility of scoring,” commented Kenyon.

The Eagles open the season on September 2 when they travel to the Keystone State to do battle with Dickin-son College. Action begins at 4:00 p.m.

Junior Jennifer Bateman is Bridgewater’s top returning scorer with four goals in 2010.
