our community is changing And so are its needs. Our population is aging. New family compositions reflect our community’s growing diversity. More community members are moving farther from Jewish institutions. Ties to our community are harder to maintain for many.

That’s why Jewish Federation is finding new ways to address these complex needs.

With your help, we can meet the changing needs that our community is facing.

Together, we have built a caring community

“ It is thanks to your support that we are able to fund the much-needed programs we do. Without your generosity we wouldn’t be able to share in these successes and for that, we thank you.”

—Mark James, Chair, 2011 Federation Annual Campaign

Thanks to your generosity…

More community members have received assistance so they can keep a roof over their heads and put food on their tables.

More families with limited incomes have received subsidies for important educational and cultural programs.

More workers have received job placement services so they can get back on track.

More frail and socially isolated seniors have accessed programs and services that keep them healthy and connected.

More students have received tuition assistance so they can attend Jewish day schools and connect with their heritage.

Your generosity has enabled all this. Still, our community’s needs are changing and we need to do more.

Today, more members of our

community are turning to

Federation-funded programs,

delivered by our partner agencies,

for support they never thought

they would need. Like Mark and

Roberta, who didn’t expect to

find themselves in this position.

Page 7: 2011 Federation Annual Campaign Brochure

More will receive support Over the last six months, more underemployed families have had to turn to not one, but several Jewish Federation-supported partner agencies. Mark and Roberta have had their hours cut at work, they’ve lost their extended medical coverage, and the cost of food and transportation keeps skyrocketing. With your generosity, they will receive assistance with basic necessities like groceries for their children, and transit passes for their commute will no longer be out of reach. Employment services will help community members like Mark and Roberta reposition themselves in a changing job market.

The Federation Annual Campaign funds critical programs run by our partner agencies. This helps them address the needs of our community’s most vulnerable—and respond to new needs that arise

as our community changes. Your gift to the Federation Annual Campaign helps make this possible.

At 87, Mr. Zimorsky cherishes his

independence. Because of his

poor health, he is no longer able

to be active in synagogue or

Jewish seniors’ programs.

He is alone. And lonely.

Page 9: 2011 Federation Annual Campaign Brochure

More will live with dignity The needs of our growing seniors’ population are outpacing the programs and services our community currently provides. Keeping Mr. Zimorsky independent means ensuring the availability of services he’s never needed before. With your help, Federation-funded programs delivered by our partner agencies will ensure seniors in our community—our neighbours, our extended family, our parents—are able to access the in-home care and out-of-home programs they need.

Now, with your generosity, a home-care worker will visit seniors like Mr. Zimorsky regularly. They will age in place safely and with dignity.

Michael and Diana long to

send their daughter to Jewish

camp and provide her with

a Jewish education, but the

cost of keeping a roof over

their heads is so high, that

just isn’t possible without help.

More will maintain their connection to community As housing costs rise, greater strains are being put on our community—vulnerable families and individuals are seeking support to ensure they have warm, safe, stable places to live. And the housing situation is creating an entirely new need. As more Jewish families are forced to live farther from our community’s facilities and institutions, it’s hard for them to access the programs and services they need. Many are finding their community connections fading. Michael, Diana and Alexa are one such family now living with very few Jewish resources near their home.

Thanks to your generosity, Jewish Federation will be able to support programs and services that address complex needs throughout our community. We fund the programs that support the most

vulnerable members of our community. And we also fund new programs so Jewish families can maintain their ties to the community and their children can develop new ones, no matter where they live.

For more and more families

who find their community

connections eroding,

Jewish continuity is a concern.

It certainly is for Rob and

Jessica, who have always

valued Jewish education for

their children, yet struggle to

supplement that learning at home.

Page 13: 2011 Federation Annual Campaign Brochure

More will connect with their Jewish heritage With your help, Jewish Federation can continue to support our local synagogues’ and partner agencies’ family-focused programs where parents like Rob and Jessica can discover how to enrich their children’s Jewish education and Hebrew language skills at home. The Federation Annual Campaign funds supplementary schools, tuition assistance for students at Jewish day schools and camperships so children and families can connect with their heritage in meaningful ways.

Your generosity helps ensure Jewish continuity for the next generation. And the generation after that.

As more and more young

people move to Vancouver,

they’re struggling to feel

at home in our community.

Twenty-four-year-old Sharon

is one such newcomer who

just moved to the city for

a new job.

Page 15: 2011 Federation Annual Campaign Brochure

More are making our community home For the first time in her life, Sharon finds herself without her family and lifelong Jewish friends. Not only does she feel out of place in a new city, but she misses being part of the Jewish community she grew up in and longs for friends with whom she can spend the holidays. Our community needs more programs for young adults who have finished university but have not yet started a family.

Now, thanks to your generosity, new programs will help young adults like Sharon build community connections at a time when they could easily let them lapse. This year, Jewish Federation helped launch Canada’s first Moishe House, part of the worldwide network of informal hubs for Jewish young adults. Jewish Federation recently increased funding for Taglit-Birthright Israel so more local

young adults can have a life-changing, first-time experience in our homeland. The Annual Campaign also funds Hillel at UBC, SFU and UVic—the first community connection for many 20-somethings.

In Jewish Federation’s

partnership region in Northern

Israel, more young people are

facing uncertain futures due

to lack of job opportunities

and poor infrastructure.

Page 17: 2011 Federation Annual Campaign Brochure

More will have a brighter future Adi, a 14-year-old in our partnership region of the Northern Galilee, was considered at risk by many. Her dyslexia made it difficult for her to succeed in school; she lacked self esteem and was struggling to find her way.

Now, thanks to your generosity, Adi is training to become an IT specialist in a Federation-funded program called Net@. There, she’s learning skills that will open doors for her and she’s doing so alongside students of all different backgrounds and beliefs. Your generosity helps ensure high-risk, high-potential youth can build a foundation for a brighter future. At home and in our partnership region.
