Dear Friends,When was the last time you lingered over dinner with your special someone or spent the day taking in the great outdoors with your kids? Our guess is that it’s been a while. Well, we’d like to suggest that you revive your daytrips, your weekends and your vacations with a little dose of small town Texas charm.

Don’t get us wrong, we love the lights of the big cities, but nothing can compare to our starry nights. A visit to Georgetown isn’t just a vacation from your daily routine, it’s a chance to enjoy life at a slower pace. As the Red Poppy Capital of Texas and home to one of the finest collections of Victorian commercial architecture found in the state of Texas, we encourage you to meander through history and explore a community where friends become family.

If you aren’t already picturing yourself strolling through our downtown square or biking the San Gabriel Trail, you definitely will be by the time you’ve flipped through the rest of this guide. Every page is meant to help you plan your trip so feel free to dog-ear, highlight or write in the margins.

We can’t wait to welcome you to our town.

Sincerely Yours, Georgetown Convention and Visitors Bureau

HistoryThe City of Georgetown, TX, nestled at the fork of the North and

South San Gabriel River, was established in 1848 as a trading center

for the surrounding agricultural areas. As the story goes, wealthy

landowner, George Washington Glasscock, donated 172 acres of his

land to Williamson County. In exchange for his generosity, Glasscock

asked that the new county seat bear his name. More than 160 years

have passed since Georgetown was established, yet the town has

managed to preserve not just the history of its namesake but also the

traditions of days gone by. Annual cattle drives, community-wide

festivals and extensive preservation efforts have enabled the City of

Georgetown to hold fast to its historic charm. In 1997, the City of

Georgetown became the first Texas City to be designated a National

Main Street City. Georgetown also boasts three nationally registered

Historic Districts: Williamson County Courthouse District, Belford

National District and The University Avenue/Elm Street District.

Amble around the downtown square and you will feel as if you have

stepped back in time. Should you wish to immerse yourself further into

the history of Georgetown, pick up a walking or driving tour brochure

at the Visitor Center located at 101 W. 7th Street.

SAN GABRIEL PARKMeandering right through the very heart of Georgetown is the San Gabriel River. What better place to find one of the most beautiful parks in the state of Texas. San Gabriel Park is graced with 200-year-old oak trees that offer the shade of their branches to family picnics, games of touch football or Frisbee, concerts, festivals, canoeing, swimming and, well, a lazy day of fishing. If biking or hiking suits your fancy, the San Gabriel River Trail, designated a National Recreation Trail by the U.S. Department of the Interior, is a great 9-mile tour. For information on Georgetown’s many parks, visit the website.

SOUTHWESTERNUNIVERSITYExercise your mind with a stroll through the halls of Southwestern University. As the oldest chartered university in Texas and home to one of the most beautiful structures in the state, you’ll get more than just a history lesson. The architecture is something to behold with much of its Gothic-style buildings dating back to the 1800s, while the labs and athletic arenas are pure twenty-first century.

Dear Georgetown,

Home is where the heart is and my heart is firmly planted in the soil

of Georgetown, Texas. I spent my childhood eating carnival food

and watching the fireworks sparkle over the San Gabriel Park on the

4th of July. Christmases on the square have the same magic quality

that they did when I was younger. The lights, the carolers and the hot

chocolate still warm my soul. It’s not just the festivals and the holidays

that will have me calling Georgetown home well into my golden years,

it’s my neighbors who have become family, the summer evenings spent

swimming in the lake, the sweet smell of BBQ from the Pitt and the

small town charm. What can I say, when I have children, I want them

to stick their hands in the earth at the Inner Space Cavern, get spooked

by Halloween Ghost Tours and grow up in a place like Mayberry.

Sincerely Yours, Cassie Gibson

Georgetown, TX is home-style living at its best, but don’t let its quaint

exterior fool you, the city is a hotbed for greatness. With a plethora of

things to do, see and explore, it’s no wonder that Georgetown has not only won over the hearts of those who call it home, but also some of our nation’s top ten lists.

The quest for the perfect work/life balance is nearly as difficult to find as the Fountain of Youth. However in Georgetown, we feel as if a beautiful chord has been struck and apparently so does Fortune

Small Business because they recently ranked us as the #2 Place to Live & Launch a New Business. Our entrepreneurs and business owners need not consult the magazine to know that Georgetown offers

a supportive community, business benefits and a booming economy.

Not only are we a great place to live and launch a business but we are

the perfect place to hang your hat when you are ready to enjoy your golden years. Frommer’s ranked Georgetown as the #1 Place to Retire in America and U.S. News & World Report named us in the

top 10 Great Retirement Spots for Golf Nuts.

Well it’s obvious that we are a great place to live and work, but what about play? Well turns out we are doing pretty well for ourselves when it comes to the great outdoors. Recently we received our Texas Scenic City certification, as well as the First Lady’s Texas Treasures Award. From our hike and bike trails to our Victorian-commercial architecture, we have a photo opportunity everywhere you turn.

Receiving awards and recognition for our city makes us very proud to call Georgetown home. However, what really makes us burst with happiness is sharing our amazing city with friends, family and visitors.

So enjoy a visit and see where Georgetown ranks on your list.

As the silver award winner for this year’s Best of Georgetown Restaurant, Wildfire is a place to warm all of your senses. Both the restaurant’s name and unique flavors are derived from the large oak log burning grill and smoking applications with apple, hickory and mesquite wood. Both the power of the flame and the smoke therefrom are used to cook a wide variety of steaks, poultry, seafood and game meats to perfection. Their full service bar offers the most extensive Texas wine list in the world. If you are looking for a big city meal with small town style, Wildfire is the place to savor.

Dear Georgetown,When we opened the restaurant in 1999, Georgetown was still a

relatively small town, yet we saw a great deal of potential and

opportunity for our family and our business here. Turns out, what we

saw came true. Georgetown has given Dos Salsas a chance to be

successful and for that we are eternally grateful to the city and those who

call Georgetown home.

In fact, the best part about having a business in Georgetown is the

people. We are situated in a place that is big enough to have a large

clientele, but small enough to know everyone’s name. We’re lucky to

have a business where we can get to know our customers on a personal

level. Building relationships and creating friendships are part of what

makes Georgetown so unique. In our restaurant and along the city

streets you can feel the warm embrace of the family. Whether you are

you leave.

We thank the City of Georgetown for allowing us to become one of its

Dear Georgetown,We moved to Georgetown in 1994 and by 1996 we had opened our business. Over the last 15 years, we have seen the City of Georgetown grow, in turn aiding in the growth of our own little shop. Many of our customers have become our friends and it is this family environment that we enjoy most about living and working in this tremendous community.

Life can’t be filled with all work and no play, so when we do have a chance to explore our own City Beautiful, we take our family outdoors. There are outstanding city and county parks, impressive hike and bike trails that wind along the riverbank and a lake perfect for family fun. We love the shopping, the dining and the entertainment that are available throughout our historic downtown and not just because one of the decade-old buildings is where our shop calls home. The community pride is every where you look, from the fans cheering on the local high school football team under the Friday night lights to our annual Christmas Stroll and Poppy Festival. The whole town comes together for old-fashioned fun on a variety of occasions.

We aren’t just building a business in Georgetown, we’re raising a family. Starting a family in Georgetown ensures that our girls will live and learn in an environment that nurtures their hearts and their minds. The schools are exemplary; six have been recognized by the Texas Education Agency. The churches focus on outreach initiatives and strive to provide assistance to all those in need. Bringing our children up in a community that loves and serves God and each other is important to us.

Living, working and raising a family in Georgetown is an amazing experience that we treasure. Our more than 10,000 loyal Georgetown patrons are our friends, our advocates, and our tour guides, bringing friends and family to meet us. We feel truly blessed to be a part of it all, and can’t imagine working

and living anywhere else.
