The Centre for English Teaching (CET) is part of the University of Sydney, providing English language university preparatory courses for post-graduate students.

We offer direct entry pathway programs for entry to the University, as well as general, business and professional English courses. We also offer IELTS test preparation courses and customised short and long term programs.

What is dec?It allows you to experience the learning environment found in your university faculty. You will also learn the skills necessary for success in university situations including tutorials, seminars, essays and research reports.

What will I learn?You will study with classmates entering courses in related university faculties.

There is continuous assessment in the course, and tasks are based on assessments in university faculties.

If you attend the entire course, pass all assessments and meet the necessary academic entry requirements, you will gain direct entry to your university course. This means you can pass directly to your preferred degree at the University (subject to visa status).

What do I need to enter dec?You need a Conditional Offer of Admission to the University of Sydney and an IELTS result.

Courses may require an IELTS test as part of the assessment. Equivalent scores in TOEfL or other approved tests will also be accepted.

The duration of your course depends on your English language entry requirement and your current level of English.

– dec 25 weeks – if your latest IELTS score is one full band below your university English language entry requirement (includes a sponsored IELTS Test).

– dec 15 weeks – If your latest IELTS score is only half a band below your university English language entry requirement.

AcAdeMIc enGLIsH (Ae)


What is Ae?It fast tracks you for IELTS test entry to university or TAfE in Australia, or to our Direct Entry Courses (DEC) for entry into the University of Sydney.

It also helps in preparation for IELTS requirements to transition from university to internships, or to live and work in Australia.

University entry is assessed by an IELTS test. We are an IELTS testing centre, and can arrange test bookings that suit your requirements. You will need to pay the IELTS test fee.

AE is taught at all levels with entry points every five weeks.

What will I learn?AE equips you with the language skills required for participation in university lectures, seminars and tutorials. You will learn IELTS test-taking skills, including:

– listening for specific information – answering different question types – presenting your ideas in writing – speaking confidently under test conditions.

What do I need to enter Ae?Initial placement in a class is by an IELTS or equivalent test result, or by our placement test.

The length of your course depends on your current level of English and the English language entry requirement for your university, TAfE, or other training course. Generally, students study AE in programs of 10–50 weeks duration.

When do I apply for Ae?We have nine intake dates per year. End of course dates are aligned with university start dates for Semester 1 and Semester 2 each year.

What is AsAs?It is a four-week intensive academic skills program offered to government-sponsored students, particularly recipients of AusAID, World Bank or Asian Development Bank scholarships.

What will I learn?You will attend lectures and tutorials throughout the program, participating in eLearning, excursions, conferences and performances.

follow up workshops are conducted throughout Semester 1 of your studies and include practical creativity, critical reading, time management and 1:1 feedback on essay writing.

What do I need to enter AsAs?You need to be a government-sponsored student, for example, a recipient of an AusAID, World Bank or Asian Development Bank scholarship.

What is Ge?It is a course designed to equip you for life in Australia. It is taught at all levels with materials adapted to meet the specific needs of the class.

GE is suitable for people on student, working holiday, ELICOS or tourist visas and focuses on the practical language needed for day to day business and communication.

What will I learn?You will learn the language skills necessary to function in Australia. GE will also give you the skills and confidence to get the job you want, travel around Australia or prepare for life after university. GE will improve your communication skills in a supportive atmosphere. Above all GE courses can be tailored to your individual needs whether you are preparing for permanent residence or developing the language skills needed to enter the workforce. Enjoy the experience of studying at one Australia’s top universities.

What do I need to enter Ge?There are no set entry requirements. Initial placement in a class is by our placement test or an IELTS or equivalent test result.

What is IeLts testing?It is a world class, proven English test. Over 1.4 million candidates take the IELTS test each year to start their journeys into international education and employment. It is recognised by more than 6000 institutions in over 135 countries. We are an official IELTS testing centre. It is part of a global network of more than 300 test locations.

You will need to take an IELTS test if you want to:

– enter a DEC course – enter university from AE – externally validate your GE course completion.

What do I need to do for IeLts?There are many IELTS test dates throughout the year. Our website has details, or you can ask at Reception. You can either download a test application form from our website: sydney.edu.au/cet/ielts/ registration.shtml or ask in person at CET Reception.

How do I prepare for IeLts?We conduct IELTS preparation classes each evening. for details, please check our website: sydney.edu.au/cet/ielts/preparation.shtml

If you are studying in an AE course, your teachers will include IELTS test preparation as part of your regular class work.

Orientation day takes place on the Thursday before the start of each term. You will need to arrive in Sydney before orientation day. We will introduce you to CET, the University and living in Sydney.

How to enrol at cet

– apply online or send your application by mail, fax or scanned email.

– Cet will send you an offer letter with payment details.

– send your payment by australian dollar bank draft, by credit card (Visa, mastercard, ameX) or by telegraphic transfer.

– When we receive your payment, we send you a confirmation of enrolment (e-Coe) form to apply for a student visa. You take this to your nearest australian embassy to process your visa. If you are travelling on a tourist visa, we send you a letter of acceptance.

Visa requirements

– some countries require a pre-visa assessment process. You should find out from the australian embassy in your country whether this process is needed.

– You can study eLICOs programs for up to 12 weeks if you have a tourist visa or 17 weeks on a working holiday visa. For longer periods you will need a student visa.

c) If you cancel your course more than one month before the course commencement date, you will receive a refund of 100% of tuition fees paid.

d) If you cancel your course less than one month before the course commencement date, you will receive a refund of 80% of tuition fees paid.

e) Once you commence your course you will not be eligible for a refund (we define a course as the number of weeks for which you paid).

all refunds are sent to your home country.this agreement does not remove your right to take further action under australia’s consumer protection laws. In addition, our dispute resolution processes do not circumscribe (restrict or limit) your right to pursue other legal remedies.

b) transfer to another institution – if you transfer to a formal degree or diploma course at another university, taFe or College, you maY be eligible for a transfer to that institution of up to 80% of the remainder of your tuition fees. Both Cet and the other institution must approve the transfer. You should request a transfer on the Cet ‘transfer form’. You may need a release letter from Cet. Cet will notify Immigration where necessary.

3) satisfactory attendance

the australian government Immigration Department insists that students on student visas attend 80% or more of their classes. You status in australia depends on this.

4) courses, term dates and fees

the Centre for english teaching reserves the right to review courses, term dates and fees at any time without notice. We will notify you of any changes prior to the commencement of your course.

5) minimum entry age

students must be at least 18 years old.
