Ritual as Ideology: Text and Context in TeyyamChandran T V

Teyyam, the spectacular r i tua l dance wide ly per formed in Nor th Ind ia , Kera la , has i ts d is t inct forms of v isual and verbal express ion. However , what was once expressed through the d is t inct ly ind igenous forms of th is re l ig ious “o ther” no longer remains the same, as the speci f ic i t ies o f meaning and messages as encoded in the whole s t ructure of i ts r i tua l per formance were leve led out and superceded by the ideolog ica l launder ing of caste Hinduism. The s tudy looks in to the speci f ic cu l tura l format ion of Teyyam – i t re- f rames and in terprets var ious myths of the mother goddesses and hero-dei t ies by s i tuat ing them in the h is tor ica l condi t ions in which they or ig inated. Based on s tudy at a micro s t ructura l leve l , the book explores f rom a soc io log ica l perspect ive how the r i tua l funct ions as ideology, apar t f rom i ts cu l t ic or re l ig ious s ign i f icance. I t a lso unfo lds and expla ins the gender d ispar i ty between the archetypal Female Devourer and her Male Vic t ims, the recurrent mot i fs in the myths re la ted to var ious mani festat ions of the Terr ib le Mother in Teyyam.
