Jamin Hoffman has had an extensive career as a conductor, serving for thirteen years as the Assistant

and then Resident Conductor for the Milwaukee Ballet (1989-2002), as Conductor of UW-Milwaukee’s University Community Orchestra (1992-2003), and as Orchestra Director at Nicolet High School since August of 2002. Jamin was appointed the Conductor of the Concord Chamber Orchestra in August of 2004.

As Resident Conductor of the Milwaukee Ballet, Jamin led the Milwaukee Ballet Orchestra in performances of many great masterworks to critical acclaim, including such works as Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana (with the Milwaukee Symphony Chorus), Mozart’s Requiem (with the Bel Canto Chorus), Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker, and Anna Karenina, Sergei Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet and Cinderella, Igor Stravinsky’s The Firebird, Paul Chihara’s The Tempest, Aaron Copland’s Billy the Kid and Appalachian Spring, Léon Minkus’ Don Quixote, and Bela Bartok’s Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta.

As a French horn player, Jamin performed regularly with the Waukesha Symphony and the

Concord Chamber Orchestra since moving to Milwaukee in 1988 until 2004. Even before taking his position at Nicolet High School, Jamin was active as an educator, giving in-school performances, presentations, lectures, and demonstrations throughout southeast Wisconsin. Jamin is an editor and published arranger of educational music for Hal Leonard Music Publishing, with over forty published arrangements. Rounding out his musical activities, Jamin served as the President of the Board for the Concord Chamber Orchestra from 1997 to 2001.

A native of Mobile, AL, Jamin received his undergraduate degree from the University of Southern Mississippi (USM). While at USM he studied conducting with Dr. Joe Barry Mullins, horn with Dennis Behm and composition with Luigi Zaninelli. After graduation, Jamin was a music educator and performed regularly with four regional orchestras in Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida. He received his Master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where he studied conducting with Margery Deutsch, horn with Barry Benjamin, and composition with John Downey.

Currently, Jamin lives in Milwaukee with his wife Sandra. In addition to his musical activities, Jamin enjoys spending time with his daughter, Mara; cooking; reading mysteries, fantasy and science fiction; and spoiling his pets.

While The Sound of Music is best known as a movie, it began as a stage musical with music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II and a book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse. It is based on the memoir of Maria von Trapp, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers. Many songs from the musical have become standards, including the excerpts you will hear tonight: “The Sound of Music,” “How Can Love Survive,” “The Lonely Goatherd,” “My Favorite Things,” “Six-teen, Going on Seventeen,” “So Long, Farewell,” “Do, Re, Mi,” “Edelweiss,” “An Ordinary Couple,” “No Way to Stop It,” “Maria,” and “Climb Ev’ry Mountain.”

The original Broadway production, starring Mary Martin and Theodore Bikel, opened on November 16, 1959. It was adapted as a film musical in 1965, with a screenplay by Ernest Lehman, starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. It won a total of five Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Scoring of Music – Adaptation or Treatment, and displaced Gone with the Wind as the highest-grossing film of all-time. The cast album was also nominated for a Grammy Award for Album of the Year. In 2001, the United States Library of Congress selected the film for preservation in the National Film Registry as it was deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”

Many details of the history of the von Trapp family were altered for the musical, chiefly: Georg Ludwig von Trapp lived with his family in a villa in Aigen, a suburb of Salzburg; the real Maria von Trapp was sent to be a tutor to one of the children, not a governess to all of them; the Captain’s oldest child was a boy, not a girl; and the names of the children were changed (at least partly to avoid confusion: his second eldest daughter was also called Maria); the von Trapps were married in 1927, not 1938, and therefore spent some years in Austria before leaving; finally, they did not flee during the Salzburg Music Festival, but merely boarded a train to Italy, not Switzerland, and were not hampered by the German authorities.

Exodus is a 1960 epic war film produced and directed by Otto Preminger, and based on the 1958 novel by Leon Uris. The screenplay was written by Dalton Trumbo, which represented the breaking of the Hollywood Blacklist. The film features an ensemble cast, and its celebrated soundtrack won the Academy Award for Best Original Score at the 1960 Oscars. The film was also nominated for Best Supporting Actor (Sal Mineo) and for Best Cinematography.

The film is based on the events that happened on the ship Exodus in 1947 as well as events dealing with the founding of the state of Israel in 1948. Widely characterized as a “Zionist epic,” the film has been identified by many commentators as having been enormously influential in stimulating Zionism and support for Israel in the United States. Although the Preminger film softened the

anti-British and anti-Arab sentiment of the novel, the film remains controversial for its depiction of the Arab-Israeli conflict, and for what some scholars perceive to be its lasting impact on American conceptions (or misconceptions) of regional turmoil. Because of early 1960s censorship, the film also eliminated several explicit sex scenes found in the novel.

An often told (but probably apocryphal) story included in the reference book The Filmgoer’s Companion mentions that the comedian Mort Sahl attended the premiere of Exodus, which of course included the director Otto Preminger. Apparently bored by the lengthy film, Sahl stood up after three hours and exclaimed, “Otto, let my people go!”

Doctor Zhivago is a 1965 epic drama-romance-war film directed by David Lean, starring Omar Sharif and Julie Christie. The film is loosely based on the novel of the same name by Boris Pasternak. It has remained popular for decades, and is the eighth highest grossing film of all time in the U.S., adjusted for inflation. Despite being a huge box office hit, Doctor Zhivago received mixed reviews at the time of its release. It was criticized for its length and depiction of the romance between Zhivago and Lara. Lean took these criticisms very personally, and claimed at the time that he would never make another film. However, numerous critics — including Richard Schickel and Anna Lee — defended Doctor Zhivago, and its box office success allowed Lean to write off his critics. The film won five Academy Awards, including Best Original Score, and was nominated for five more.

The film left an indelible mark on popular culture and fashion, and to this day remains extremely popular. Maurice Jarre’s score — particularly “Lara’s Theme” — became one of the most famous in cinematic history. Over the years, the film’s critical reputation has gained in stature, and today Doctor Zhivago is considered to

be one of Lean’s finest works and is highly critically acclaimed, along with Lawrence of Arabia, Brief Encounter, The Bridge on the River Kwai, and A Passage to India.

The Sting is a 1973 American caper film set in September 1936, involving a com-plicated plot by two professional grifters (Paul Newman and Robert Redford) to con a mob boss (Robert Shaw). The film was directed by George Roy Hill, who previously had directed Newman and Redford in the western Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Created by screenwriter David S. Ward, the story was inspired by real-life con games perpetrated by brothers Fred and Charley Gondorff and docu-mented by David Maurer in his book The Big Con: The Story of the Confidence Man.

The title phrase refers to the moment when a con artist finishes the “play” and takes the mark’s money. If a con game is successful, the mark does not realize he has been “taken,” at least not until the con men are long gone. The film is divided into distinct sections with old-fashioned title cards with lettering and illustrations rendered in a style reminiscent of the Saturday Evening Post. The film is noted for its musical score—particularly its main melody, “The Entertainer,” a ragtime composition by Scott Joplin, which was lightly adapted for the movie by Marvin Hamlisch. The film’s success encouraged a surge of popularity and critical acclaim for Joplin’s work.

The Sting was hugely successful at the 46th Academy Awards, being nominated for 10 Oscars and winning seven, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Music, Scoring Original Song Score and/or Adaptation. The selections featured in this medley include: “The Easy Winners,” “Solace (Mexican Serenade),” “The Entertainer,” “Hooker’s Hooker,” and “Ragtime Dance.”

Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back is a 1980 American epic space film directed by Irvin Kershner and written by Leigh Brackett and Lawrence Kasdan, with George Lucas writing the film’s story and serving as executive producer. Of the six main Star Wars films, it was the second to be released and the fifth in terms of internal chronology.

The film is set three years after the original Star Wars. The Galactic Empire, under the leadership of the villainous Darth Vader, is in pursuit of Luke Skywalker and the rest of the Rebel Alliance. While Vader chases a small band of Luke’s friends – Han Solo, Princess Leia Organa, and others – across the galaxy, Luke studies the Force under Jedi Master Yoda. But when Vader captures Luke’s friends, Luke must decide whether to complete his training and become a full Jedi Knight or to confront Vader and save his comrades.

Following a difficult production, The Empire Strikes Back was released on May 21, 1980, and initially received mixed reviews from critics; however it has since grown in esteem, becoming one of the most popular chapters in the Star Wars saga and one of the most highly-rated films in history. It earned more than $538 million worldwide over the original run and several re-releases, making it the highest grossing film of 1980. When adjusted for inflation, it is the 12th highest grossing film in the USA and Canada as of 2010. In 2010, the film was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for being “culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant.”

At the Academy Awards in 1981, The Empire Strikes Back won the Oscar for Best Sound, and was also nominated for Best Music, Original Score. In addition, John Williams’ score was awarded the BAFTA Film Award, as well as the Grammy Award and the Golden Globe Award for best original soundtrack. The selections featured in this medley include: “Star Wars (Main Theme),” “May the Force be with You,” “Han Solo and the Princess,” “Yoda’s Theme,” and “The Imperial March (Darth Vader’s Theme).”

Mary Poppins is a 1964 musical film starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, produced by Walt Disney, and based on the Mary Poppins books series by the Australian author P. L. Travers with illustrations by Mary Shepard. The film was directed by Robert Stevenson and written by Bill Walsh and Don DaGradi, with music and lyrics by the brothers Robert and Richard Sherman. It was shot at Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, California.

Julie Andrews won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance as Mary Poppins and the film won Oscars for Best Film Editing, Original Music Score, Best Song for “Chim-chim-cher-ee” and Best Visual Effects, and received a total of 13 nominations (only two movies – All About Eve and Titanic – have received

Titanic is a 1997 American epic romantic disaster film directed, written, co-produced, and co-edited by James Cameron. A fictionalized account of the sinking of the RMS Titanic, it stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet as members of different social classes who fall in love during the ship’s ill-fated maiden voyage.

Cameron’s inspiration for the film was predicated on his fascination with shipwrecks; he wanted to convey the emotional message of the tragedy, and felt that a love story interspersed with the human loss would be essential to achieving this. Production on the film began in 1995, when Cameron shot footage of the actual Titanic wreck. The modern scenes were shot on board the Akademik Mstislav Keldysh, which Cameron had used as a base when filming the wreck. A reconstruction of the Titanic was built in Baja California, and scale models and computer-generated imagery were used to recreate the sinking. The film was partially funded by Paramount Pictures and 20th Century Fox and, at the time, was the most expensive film ever made, with an estimated budget of $200 million.

Upon its release on December 19, 1997, the film was immediately successful. It equaled records with 14 Academy Award nominations and 11 wins, including Best Picture, Best Original Score, Best Original Song, and Best Director. With a worldwide gross of over $2 billion, it was the first film to reach the billion dollar mark, and remained the highest-grossing film of all time for 12 years, until Cameron’s 2009 film Avatar surpassed its gross in 2010. A 3D version of the film was re-released in theaters (often billed as Titanic 3D) on April 4, 2012, to commemorate the centenary of the tragedy.

Selections in this medley include: “Take Her to Sea, Mr. Murdoch,” “Never an Absolution,” “Southampton,” “Hard to Starboard,” and “My Heart Will Go On.”

of the Rings. It was followed by The Two Towers (2002) and The Return of the King (2003), based on the second and third volumes of The Lord of the Rings.

Set in Middle-earth, the story tells of the Dark Lord Sauron, who is seeking the One Ring. The Ring has found its way to the young hobbit Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood). The fate of Middle-earth hangs in the balance as Frodo and eight companions who form the Fellowship of the Ring begin their journey to Mount Doom in the land of Mordor, the only place where the Ring can be destroyed.

Released in December 2001, the film was highly acclaimed by critics and fans alike, especially as many of the latter judged it to be the most sufficiently faithful adaptation of the original story out of Jackson’s film trilogy. It was a major box office success, earning over $870 million worldwide, and the second highest-grossing film of 2001 in the U.S. and worldwide (behind Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone) which made it the fifth highest-grossing film ever at the time.

Today it is the 25th highest worldwide-grossing film of all time. It won four Academy Awards (including Best Original Score) and five BAFTA awards. In 2007, The Fellowship of the Ring was voted number 50 on the American Film Institute’s list of 100 greatest American films. The AFI also voted it the second greatest fantasy film of all time during their Top 10 special. This arrangement includes: “The Fellowship Theme,” “The Prophecy,” “Concerning Hobbits,” “Three is

Star Trek is an American science fiction entertainment franchise created by Gene Roddenberry. The original Star Trek television series followed the interstellar adventures of James T. Kirk and the crew of an exploration vessel of a 23rd century galactic “United Federation of Planets” — the Starship Enterprise. The series debuted in 1966 and ran for three seasons on NBC. Following the release of other series in the franchise, the Kirk-led series was retroactively referred to as Star Trek: The Original Series. The adventures were continued by the short-lived Star Trek: The Animated Series and six feature films. Four more television series were eventually produced, based in the same universe but following other characters: Star Trek: The Next Generation, following the crew of a new Starship Enterprise set a century after the original series; Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager, set contemporaneously with The Next Generation; and Star Trek: Enterprise, set before the original series, in the early days of human interstellar travel. Four additional feature films were produced, following the crew of The Next Generation, and, most recently, a 2009 movie reboot of the franchise featuring a young crew of the original Enterprise set in an alternate timeline.

The Star Trek franchise includes a total of 11 feature films, dozens of games, hundreds of novels, numerous toy lines and replicas, a themed attraction in Las Vegas (from 1998 to 2008) and at least two traveling museum exhibits of props. Beginning with the original television series and continuing with the subsequent films and series, the franchise has become a cult phenomenon, initiated the creation of a full-fledged language (Klingon), and spawned many pop culture references.

Though the cultural impact of the Star Trek franchise is widely recognized and far-reaching, none of the movies won an Academy Award until the 11th movie won Best Makeup in 2009. The television series won 31 Emmy awards, and the entire franchise won numerous Hugo and Saturn awards (awards specifically targeted for science-fiction).

This arrangement features music from several of the television series and feature films, including: “Star Trek,” “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” “Star Trek: The Inner Light,” “Star Trek: Generations,” “Star Trek: Voyager,” and “Star Trek: The Motion Picture.”
