Years of Service awards include Patrol, Officiating , Assessing and Service to SLSA

The most important and gratifying aspect of the 2011/12 season was simply the performance of our lifesavers. In each and every club across the Far North Coast Branch, the patrolling lifesavers stood tall, their efforts were above and beyond everyday standards, and they excelled in our core function of “vigilance and service”.

I reflect on some of the fine examples:-

Steve McNabb and Rhys Balkin's rescue of ski paddlers outside Ballina's river mouth in extreme and dangerous conditions will be nominated for a meritorious award.

Peter Baird, Byron Douglas and Dougal Forsyth (Fingal Rovers) awarded a group bravery citation for their rescue and saving the lives of 12 people when their boat was swamped on the Tweed River bar in treacherous conditions in 2004.

The Byron Bay patrol on 1st April saved one life and did everything they could to save another two caught in a rip outside the patrolled area. Members of the public described the lifesavers as “amazing” and could not believe how quickly they reacted.

Evans Head members, Jon Rigley, Ben Redman and Callum O'Grady performed an outstanding rescue at dusk, it was dark and the sea was rough. The woman had drifted about 400m out and she was extremely distressed and screaming. The lifesavers reaction to praise from eye-witnesses was “that is just part and parcel of what we do”.

A mass rescue calmly and efficiently performed at Ballina by Rod Balkin, Steve Brown, Nathan Stelzer and Isabella Jones rightly recognized by a rescue citation from Surf Lifesaving NSW.

Cabarita members efforts in the search and recovery of a Kenyan teenager in early December were magnificent. It was a real team effort and brought high praise from the State President, Tony Haven.

Brian Dell (Lennox Head) receives a Certificate of Merit from Surf Life Saving Australia for the rescue of a father and son at Lennox Head in 2010.

These rescues and many others throughout the Branch signalled several strong messages to our organization:-

1. The most call-outs in the State occur on the Far North Coast and Far South Coast.

2. Many of the rescues during the season demonstrated a high level of support and cooperation by our member clubs for one another.

3. The standard of our lifesavers and their rescues reflects on the high quality training, knowledge and guidance provided by our officials, trainers, instructors, and Directors.

Presidents Report

Administration

The 2011-2012 season continued on from last season been very busy for our clubs with much more accountability making the jobs of our volunteers' much more demanding.

It was another successful season for all 10 clubs, Jet Boat and Support Services, that make up Surf Life Saving Far North Coast Branch and I would like to extend my thanks to every active member that patrolled our wonderful coastline. It is great to report that no lives were lost during patrol hours between the flags. Our Support Groups have, once again continued to provide strategic level of support to the branch and is now working to ensure close support to our clubs.

Over 1300 patrolling members from Fingal to Yamba managed to keep the Far North Coast safe for swimmers during patrols hours. In total there were over 58269.25 hours performed. Our branch lifesavers have bee led well by Director of Life Saving Ben Redman.

To provide quality patrolling lifesavers we need to have the highest level of training and education possible. Our Trainers and Assessors led by our Education Committee have done a great job. None of these positions have any “down time” with training being undertaken all year round.

Our Surf Sports carnivals are enjoyed by those that attend and thanks goes to Director of Surf Sports John Watson and all officials for providing excellent opportunities for our members. Our Surf Sports team is still looking into ideas for the coming seasons of ways to improve the attendance at carnivals. This season saw the introduction of the Pool Competition, which was encouraging for the branch.

I had the pleasure assisting at the Under 15-17 Development at Yamba SLSC, this was a wonderful experience to be involved with such enthusiastic young lifesavers of our branch. The camp was a great hit by all who attended, congratulations to Director of Member Services Paul Smith, Carol Smith and his excellent group of leaders who attended to make this camp an experience for those who attended.

Once again Cudgen Headland was host the 2012 State Titles, the organisation for such an event is unbelievable and this season was made even harder with the carnival split into three different areas. Once again Congratulations to all who assisted in the running of the carnival.

On behalf of all members and Clubs in the Branch I take this opportunity to thank all the sponsors that have assisted us again for the 2011-2012 season. Without the support of these companies, our clubs would not be able to continue to provide the high level of lifesaving and search and rescue capabilities for the bathing and boating public within our branch. We continue to have the support of major sponsors TURSA, Newcastle Permanent Building Society and this season Woollam Constructions extended their sponsorship allowing us to purchase an extra jet ski and supported the running cost of our jet skis, this season Essential Energy also join our list of sponsors.

As we begin the 2012-2013 season we have many challenges ahead. To continue the development of a branch strategic plan, working alongside the our Branch Business Plan. With a goal of securing Branch headquarters.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Branch Executive Committee for their support and assistance over the past twelve months. We are very fortunate to have a strong and committed Executive Committee working together to make Far North Coast Branch the best in the state.

Looking forward to the 2011 / 2012 Season.

Debbie PawseyDirector of Administration

It is with great pleasure that I submit this report for the 2011-2012 lifesaving season. Having the opportunity to work with and represent such a dedicated and professional group of volunteers is a real honour.

It has been an extremely busy season for the far north coast branch. This season saw our members perform 492 first aids, 8560 preventative actions, 37 searches, 272 rescues and find 33 lost children and a total of 32,650 patrol hours, we had 5 drownings all of which were in unpatrolled areas.

The highest number of 13surf call outs in the state was performed within our branch. With 65 calls for assistance received from police. Our branch has an exceptional reputation with the NSW police force and is now the first point of call for all aquatic search and rescue on the far north coast. This is partly because of the training undertaken by the duty officers with the water police and NSW Maritime and the level of professionalism displayed by members and clubs in searches and in times of tragedy.

Our RWC program is moving forward with the securing of a 3 year sponsorship deal with woollam Constructions and 2 new RWC's purchased this season. The aim is to have craft based in every council area over the next season. With new RWC operators being trained over the coming months we will be able to develop a better rostering system and provide a greater service to the community with roving patrols to populated remote locations.

Radio communications have been an ongoing work in progress with overheating issues at some repeater sites and some trial and error with the new computer system but we are getting there and thank you for your patients. The small group of dedicated Surfcom operators deserve a big pat on the back. Dealing with 3 branches from the Ballina radio room and on some occasions the whole state, has proved challenging but this group of operators take it in their stride and get the job done. Some of these guys and girls will do a 10 hour shift on Saturday then back it up with another 10 on Sunday.

It is because of the actions and dedication of all of our members that makes me proud to be a part of the Greatest branch in the country.

Being my first season as director of lifesaving I would like to thank everyone for their support and advice this past season and I am looking forward to working with you all next season.

Ben RedmanDirector of Life Saving

Lifesaving

I find this rather difficult submitting a report on the activities of the past season after only been in the position of Director of Education since the April 2012 Branch Council Meeting

Firstly I would like to thank Brian Lewis for the work he has put into the promotion of Surf Life Saving Education within the Far North Coast Branch, this has lead to us been one of the leaders in this field in New South Wales, thank you Brian for a job well done.

As Surf Life Saving is a Registered Training Organizsation it means that we have numerous items that we must comply with, the most contentious of these would be the paper work and the paper trail that we must have. Most of us throw our hands up in the air in despair and tend to walk away fromthis conceived problem instead of looking for a solution on how to make it easier for those concerned.

I believe we are on the way to making this a little easier for all concerned with the appointment mid season of Larry Platt to the Position of Branch Award Processor, this was on a trial basis until the Branch Annual General Meeting, at the recent Education Meeting it was requested that this trial be further extended until the post 2012/2013 Education Meeting for further discussion. The process that Larry has put in place will make the issue of awards that much easier, however it should be remembered that the club's training officers must follow this process to make it work 100%.

One of our other major problems was the running of Branch Courses, [ARTC, Spinal etc]. At the start of season Education Meeting course dates were set for these courses however when the closing date was reached in most cases there was not sufficient candidates, this lead to numerous types of complaints.

It has been decided that on a trial basis till the end of the 2012 / 2013 season these courses will be run on a needs basis by clubs and Rod Balkin has been appointed on a trial basis to the position of Branch Facilitated Courses. The method to follow

is included in the Education Minutes of 5th May 2012 which all clubs and club training personal should have.

I will be doing a more in depth review of each clubs awards and membership to gauge where they need to look and what assistance can be given in training and assessment of existing and new members, this will also include all Branch Support Groups.

For Education within the Far North Coast Branch to go forward we need Club's, Trainers, Assessors and Facilitators to work together to ensure that members get the best possible result for the award that they are a candidate for, this means that the paper work, training and assessment is carried out in a timely manner and submitted for processing as required. I believe we have the personal within the Branch for this to happen and it is up to all of us to see that this is carried out.

In closing I would like to thank all Branch Trainers, Assessors and Facilitators for their hard work over the past season, to our District Supervisors the unsung heroes of the Education system thanks for a job well done and lastly to Larry Platt and Rod Balkin for putting your hands up to do these to new positions, a very big thank you, you will make the Directors Position that much easier to handle, to the other members of the Branch Executive thank you for your assistance so far in this position.

Vale Con Asmussen MBE28.06.2011 A lifetime of lifesaving

Those in Surf Life Saving who were lucky enough to meet and work with this true gentleman throughout his long life. Con joined the Surf Life Saving movement in 1939, attracted by the comradeship and spirit of competition he'd first observed during visits to Illawarra's Stanwell Park beach. He gained his Bronze Medallion the following year.

Over the years he was elected to many senior positions, on occasions reluctantly so, as he often mistakenly believed that someone else could do a better job. Con is renowned for stating that we all get more from Surf Life Saving than we put in. In addition to a long and distinguished history with the Helensburgh-Stanwell Park SLSC, Con was Illawarra's delegate to the NSW State Centre for 15 years (1949 to 1964) and was State delegate to the National Council for 20 years (1958 – 1978). He was elected NSW Deputy President for two seasons (1965 & 1966) and then NSW President for a record 12 seasons from 1967 to 1978.

He was awarded Life Membership of Helensburgh-Stanwell Park in 1950, Illawarra Branch in 1962, Surf Life Saving NSW in 1963, Surf Life Saving Australia in1966 and was awarded an MBE in 1972. He also received an Australian Sports Medal in 2000.

Con was involved in pioneering many of the major changes and innovations within Surf Life Saving, from the introduction of inflatable rescue boats and helicopters, to the acceptance of women as active patrolling surf lifesavers in the 80s. Con was one of the original inductees into the SLSA's Hall of Fame in 2004. By this stage Con had moved to Ballina and was a Life Member of the Ballina Lighthouse & Lismore SLSC.

At the 2011 State Titles, Con was one of a handful of surf sports officials who were honoured at a special dinner held

during the NSW Surf Life Saving Championships at Kingscliff. Con was presented with a plaque acknowledging his contribution as an official for more than 50 years.

Even into his ninth decade, Con remained very much involved in Surf Life Saving, taking on active administration and leadership roles within the Far North Coast Branch and the Ballina Lighthouse & Lismore SLSC.

At 96, Con was still assisting with administrative tasks at the Ballina club and only a week before his passing Con attended the Branch AGM and the Awards of Excellence, demonstrating his dedication to the organisation he said had given him so much. Con will be greatly missed

Ronald 'Jacko' Jackson

On Saturday 28th April 2012, Surf Life Saving Far North Coast Branch lost a true charter Ronald “Jacko” Jackson. Jacko has been a member of the branch for more than 30 years and for many of those years he was found at the club house at carnivals checking all competition craft to ensure the safety of all competitors, not to mention the yearly track up and down the Branch to ensure that all rescue equipment was up to scratch in the yearly patrol gear inspections, bringing all clubs up to SLSA standards for the patrol season ahead.

A member of Lennox-Alstonville SLSC and more recently with Evans Head-Casino SLSC, Jacko was also an Honouree Member of Byron Bay SLSC. Ron gained his Bronze Medallion on the 24/11/1962 at Bateman's Bay SLSC. He was a scrutineer at all levels of the organisation from our local junior branches through to the Australian Titles, were he was truly respected by both fellow officials and Competitors at all levels.

Jacko was part of a keen group of men who got together and developed the standard of scrutineering Australia wide and is his role of Branch Chief Scrutineer he also trained and mentored all scrutineers on the Far North Coast over the past 30 years, most still following in his footsteps.

It really was a pleasure to work with him. We all admired him and we're going to miss a great little bloke with a big personality.

UNDER 13/14 DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM.The 2012 Development Camp for the U13-14's was held on the 4-6 January and it proved to be another great success. It was held at Tallebudgera Recreational Centre on the Gold Coast and it gave 75 Far North Coast Junior Surf Life Savers an opportunity to develop life skills such as leadership, goal setting and team building along with learning about the different pathways they can take in surf lifesaving after they leave the junior ranks. One of our main goals was for them to have fun and make friends with children from other clubs.

Member Services

DEVELOPMENT CAMP

This year's camp included fun activities such as canoeing, dodge ball, beach games, and team challenges focusing on team work, communication and leadership. They also played amazing race and had a go at Zumba with lots of laughs along the way.

The camp would not have been possible without the help from Joe keane, Greg Pile, Brendan Irwin, Jodie Muir, Ryan Andrews Christine Warren, Lucy Ellis, Kaitlin Smith, Zoe Heiniger, Jodie Pile, Teagan Quinn, Gabby Callan and Amie Smith. So I say a very big thank-you to them. I would like to thank Alyce Bennett, Hugh Dougherty, Scott McCartney, Dylan Wotherspoon, and Wilson Cregan for attending our open forums and answering any questions that the participants asked.

UNDER 15/ 17 DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMOn the 13-15 April 2012 we held a U15-U17 Leadership Development Camp at Yamba. We had 36 members from Cabarita, Brunswick, Byron Bay, Lennox Head, Ballina, Evans Head and Yamba attend the camp. The main aim of the camp was to have fun after a busy season, so that we as a Branch try to retain these members long after leaving the junior ranks. Over the two days we did a number of team activities to further develop their lifesaving and personal skills.

I would especially like to thank Greg Pile, Ryan Andrews, Jodie Muir, Fletcher Budd, Talen Pinxteren and Brendan Irwin because without them as leaders this Camp would not have happened. A special thanks also goes to Byran and Jan Lyndon, Mick Smith and his boat crew, Debbie Pawsey, Bill Onslow, Rob McDermind and Carol Smith for giving up their time to help out and also to Greg Wylie, Wilson Cregan, Jim Dougherty and Tanyn Lyndon for giving a talk to the participates about Surf Life Saving. I

would also like to thank our sponsors Coles, Glen Lawrence for donating the ice cream, Tweed Fruit Exchange and also to Yamba Surf Club for letting us stay at this great venue and from all reports everyone had a great time.

STATE AND NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMSThe Youth Opportunity Makers Program was held at the Collaroy Centre in Collaroy from the 17-20 April, 2012. We had seven nominations for this program and the three successful participants were:Zoe Heiniger(Byron Bay SLSC)Fletcher Budd (Cabarita SLSC)Liam Patience (Cabarita SLSC) The program is aimed at the 15's-17's year olds looked at developing leadership and team building skills to achieve and set realistic goals in a challenging and constructive environment. The Branch should be proud of the representative as they embrace the spirit of the program and showed just what Far North Coast can achieve.

AGE MANAGER COURSESAt the beginning of the 2011-2012 Season we held two Age Managers Courses with an attendance of 16 people at each one. I would like to say thank you to Andrew Chubb for your expertise on running these courses for the Age Managers.

COACHING CLINICThis season saw a need from Clubs to hold a coaching clinic for the very first time. The clinic was organised to help clubs with coaching tips as well as teach them different skills that they will be able to teach each age group on the correct techniques for board, sprints, flags and swim. I would like to thank Greg Clarke, Paul Pattison, Jarrod Cain, Matt Nelson and Scott McCartney for giving up their time to help me with running this clinic. The clubs that attended the clinic were Evans, Ballina, Brunswick and Byron Bay.

I would like to acknowledge and thank our major sponsors TURSA, Newcastle Permanent Building Society and Woollam Constructions, NBN Television and Telstra for their support to Far North Coast Surf Life Saving 2011-2012.

It has once again been a pleasure to have held the position of Director of Member Services for another season and I am eagerly waiting the 2012-2013 Season.

Paul SmithDirector of Member Services.

The Far North Coast Branch Board of Surf Sports Team has again had a big 2011/12 Season starting with the staging of the Jacob Lollback Memorial Carnival Board Competition at Yamba in October. Again a large attendance of competition friends of Jacob were in attendance to enjoy the days activities. This coming season the event will again be held on Saturday 22nd September at Yamba.

The U/12-U/19 Youth Carnival for the season was conducted at Lennox Head in October. The carnival attracted once again good nominations for the events conducted. For a trial some selected Senior events were added to the program for this season which did not include boat or team events. The U12-U19 events were well patronised by the competitors , but the nominations from the senior competitors was very small in number. This coming season the this carnival will be conducted on the 28th October at Cabarita. Branch Competition Officials supported this carnival very well with 33 officials in attendance. The event is very popular with junior competitors and the carnival is also used by the Branch Selectors to run their eye over competitors early season form for consideration for selection in the Branch Representitive Team for the Inter Branch Championships. The ever popular Cudgen Classic has again conducted a very successful carnival over the past season last October. This carnival continues to grow in strength and popularity with large nominations being received for the event from local and visiting clubs. The coming season will again see the event being conducted at Kingscliff hosted by Cudgen Headlands S.L.S.C on Saturday 27th October 2012.

Senior CarnivalsOther Carnivals for the season were conducted at the following venues. Sunday October 30th Senior Carnival held at Lennox Head hosted by the home club. The carnival was conducted in good weather conditions with a very big high tide which held up the beach events to some extent because of the lack of beach. The Lennox Head Club had owing to lack of members available in covering all water events safety. A call for assistance was answered by Ballina-Lighthouse and Lismore S.L.S.C who supplied the required manpower and an IRB to cover this concern thank you Ballina for this assistance.

Next carnival held was that by Cudgen S.L.S.C on the 18th December. Nominations for the carnival were only small and the carnival was concluded at 1.20pm. The beach erosion problems at Cudgen did not make things any easier with the carnival being held well north of the Cudgen clubhouse.Senior Carnival date of the 22nd January had to be abandoned because of no interest being shown by a branch club to take up this date to host a carnival.

The final two Senior Carnivals for the season was the Far North Coast Branch Masters and the Branch Open Club Championships held at Yamba in February.Because of the dangerous conditions at Main Beach the Championships were transferred and conducted at Turners Beach. Both

Championships received good nominations with the events being conducted in good weather conditions, considering that 2 weeks previous because of bad weather and flooding which created dangerous conditions the Youth Championships were postponed. Also for safety reasons owing to the dangerous conditions existing at Main Beach Branch Boat Championships were conducted at Turners Beach on the Saturday where a good attendance of boat entries were received. Forty eight Branch Competition Officials were in attendance at the Championships. The organisation of the Championships by Yamba club were first class and thanks are extended for their efforts.

Byron Bay successfully defended their Branch Champion Status by winning the Branch Championship Point Score. Point score results were. (1) Byron Bay 521.(2)Cudgen 380. (3) Lennox Head 378. (4) Yamba 137. (5) Evans Head 59 (6) Ballina 57.(7) Cabarita 45. The Branch Championships next season by rotation will be conducted at Fingal hosted by Fingal Rovers S.L.S.C on the 10th February 2013.

Junior Carnivals.Junior Carnivals were held at the following venues;November at Salt where the carnival was well patronised by all branch clubs. The attendance of competitors and Officials was the largest for the year. There were 57 Competition Officials in attendance which included 21 Trainee Officials who had just completed their course the day before. Some water events had to be abandoned because of the bad surf conditions.Carnival at Cabarita held 20th November very well conducted by the Cabarita Beach Club with again very good attendance of competitors and officials . Events were conducted in strong northerly windy conditions all eventsc were finalised/December 4th Byron Bay which was a Junior Teams Event Carnival conducted in very good competition conditions. This carnival is very popular one on the youth carnival program where all branch clubs support it with good nomination. The event was well run with good co operation from the host club. The event will again be conducted at Byron Bay on Sunday 2nd December 2012.

February 4th-5th Youth Championships at Yamba.Unfortunately as mentioned earlier in the report this event had to be postponed because of flooding and dangerous conditions prevailing at that time. However the Championships were finally conducted at Tirners Beach Yamba two weeks later on the 25th-26th February. Some events because of changing surf conditions were transferred to Convent Beach to be finalised.Inter Branch Championships.

These Championships were held at Redhead in the Hunter Branch in December. The carnival was conducted in reasonable conditions with the Far North Coast Branch Team competing very well in all events on the program.

The Branch was represented in all sections with the exception of the Boat Competition. Then Branch has over the past years for

Surf Sports

some reason difficulty in getting a club crew to go to these Championships but it would appear by the lack attendance of other branch boat crews at the Inter Branch Championships last season the Far North Coast Branch is not the only one having this problem. The Branch Team gained 7th place overall and was runner up to South Coast Branch in the Champion Country Branch Competition. Season 2012-13 venue for the Championships is Black Head in Lower North Coast Branch. Congratulations to Team Manager Darron Brown and the Team Coach Scott McCartney for their magnificent in preparing the team for the Championships. The leadership shown by the Team Captains Jarrad Cain and Shannon Hulbert Green was also an inspiration to the team members.

Level 1 Coaching and Competition Officials Courses. There was not a Coaching Course held in the branch over the past season. However some branch members did travel to Coffs Harbour to attend the course there. Two such Competition Officials courses were conducted in the branch on the 22nd October at Lennox Head and 3rd December at Byron Bay. The course conducted at Lennox Head had 12 members present to do the course.

Course at Byron Bay had 27 nominations for the course , which in total gave the branch another 39 level 1 Competition Officials. Retention of officials is of some concern to the Branch.Brunswick Masters Carnival. This carnival sponsored by the Brunswick Hotel still continues to gain in strength, and is very popular with Queensland Clubs who are the main supporters of the event.. The clubs now contest the event for the “Con Asmussen Memorial Trophy”. The trophy was donated in the memory of Con who passed away earlier in the season who never ever missed the Annual Masters Day.

New South Wales State Youth Championships.Cudgen Headlands S.L.S.C very successfully hosted the State Youth Championships. The task this past season was made more difficult with the Championships being contested in three different venues at Kingscliff because of the severe beach erosion being experienced at Kingscliff. Congratulations to the Cudgen Club on their efforts to make the carnival the huge success it turned out to be..Much praise has again been received from various sections of Surf Life Saving for the club's efforts to make these Championships under difficult conditions the success it was. Results from the Championships can be found elsewhere in this report. Very pleasing to see all Far North Coast Branch Junior Clubs represented at these Championships especially our younger branch clubs of Salt and Cabarita Beach.New South Wales Masters and Open Championships.

The Cudgen Club under the same conditions as mentioned successfully conducted the Masters and the Open Club Championships. Branch clubs patronised the carnival very well with some fine performances recorded by branch club members. Byron Bay S.L.S.C were victorious in winning the Masters Point Score at the Championships. The Branch had 32 Competition Officials selected to officiate at the Youth Championships, And also had 27 Competition Officials attend the Masters and Open Championships.

New South Wales Country Championships.Season 2011-12 Country Championships were held at South West Rocks in the Mid North Coast Branch.Far North Coast Branch Clubs were very well represented with the branch clubs placed in the majority of events. The Champion Club Point Score was won Byron Bay S.L.S.C on 774 points from Warilla –Barrack Point on 622 points and Coffs Harbour 3rd on 533 points. Branch Clubs Cudgen was placed 4th on 531 points.Lennox Head 55th on 360 points. The Country Championships for season 2012-13 will again be South West Rocks on Friday 11th,Saturday12th and Sunday 13th January 2013. The Branch was well represented with 37 Competition Officials who attended the Championships.

Australian Championships.Far North Coast Branch was well represented at both The Australian Masters and the Open Club Championships which were held on the Gold Coast at Kurrawa as the venue. Because of the tragedy that occurred and the bad prevailing sea conditions at Kurrawa the Championships were transferered to North Kirra where the remaining events were conducted. The Australian Championships next season will again be held on the Gold Coast but at a venue to be announced.. The venue change has been caused by the unfortunate accident which occurred at the 2012 Championships.

Branch Carnival Equipment.Branch Gear Steward Mick Shea has again done a remarkable job in maintaining the Branch Competition Equipment. Some improvement was seen over the season with more care being taken in looking after this costly equipment. Appreciation is extended to Mick for his efforts over the season, and also for arranging storage for the Branch Gear Container over the winter months. Terry Buckley also thank you for the cartage of the container to all the carnival sites.

Branch Youth Competition Committee.Chairperson of the youth Committee Maria Kirsten did not seek re election at the AGM at Yamba in February.Elected to fill the vacancy was Denise Young of Lennox Head S.L.S.C. Thanks are extended to Maria on her efforts over the past season. Being re elected to the secretaries job was Carol Smith of Byron Bay S.L.S.C who continues to do a very good job in that position. Carol does a great job and it is through her efforts that meeting attendances have improved over the past 2 seasons. Great work Carol keep it up.

Branch Scrutineers.Very busy year for all scrutineers especially the Chief Scrutineer Mark Harris. Mark was at most carnivals during the season to check competition equipment for club members. He also goes out of his way to travel to clubs when requested to do scrutineering which is appreciated by the clubs.

Vale.Sadly over the season the branch lost two very prominent and loved officials in the passing of Con Asmussen MBE on the 27th June who passed away very suddenly aged 96. Con was one of the best known lifesavers in Australia with some 70 years service to Surf Lifesaving. He was respected and loved by all

who knew him and on behalf of the Branch Board of Surf Sports I would pass on to his wife Pat and his family our deepest sympathy. A large gathering of Surf Life Saving personell from all sections of Surf Life Saving attended Cons funeral in Ballina.Ron (Jacko) Jackson. Passed away in May after a long illness. Came up through the Junior ranks as an official. He became a very popular member of the Far North Coast Branch Board of Surf Sports and held the position of Chief Scrutineer for the branch for many years. I would pass on also the condolences of the Far North Coast Branch Board of Surf Sports to his wife Jan, son Peter and his new daughter in law Kaysie. Many members of the Far North Coast Branch S.L.S.A were present at Jacko's funeral.

At the time of writing this report arrangements for the Pool Championships are well under way.The competition is a new innovation into branch competition as has been kindly sponsored by the “Essential Energy”Power Company. The event will take place at the Southern Cross Pool Complex on Sunday 27th May. Entries and interest received for the event is very good. Thanks are extended to Essential Energy for their assistance.

Thanks.Firstly to Yamba S.L.S.C thanks for the magnificent job done in conducting the Junior,Masters and Open Club Branch Championships this past season under very trying conditions Thanks and congratulations to all Clubs,Competitors and Officials for their support and efforts over the past season.Carnivals were supported reasonably well ,and successfully concluded.

Branch Board of Surf Sports Meetings have been held regularly and well attended by Board Members.

On Friday 9th December the 2011 Far North Coast Interbranch Team travelled to Redhead Beach to compete in the NSW Interbranch Carnival against the best from all eleven NSW Branches.

Staying at the Myuna Bay Sport and Recreation Centre helped with the pre-competition team bonding, with two other branches staying at the same venue. The 'competition' started on Friday afternoon with basketball, soccer and volleyball.

Arriving at Redhead Surf Club on Saturday 10th December, we were greeted with a solid swell and tricky conditions. Although we competed well, it was a competition where the surf played a major roll in the results. We had very little help from the surf and I hate to say it but luck was not on our side. Any results that Far North Coast received were from sheer hard work. For me, there were many magic moments and those of you on my text message list were getting it live ( f you understood the spelling). But as I write this it is the memory of the board rescue teams that still stand out. Our open males, Scott McCartney and Jarrod Cain, who came from behind and paddled themselves into first place, showing the rest of the team how to do it!

We didn't win the Country Point Score Trophy as hoped; the task was made more difficult without a male or female boat crew, as well as the late withdrawal of an U19 competitor on the eve of our departure.

The Far North Coast had Ela Heiniger, Murray Thomas and Joshua Brown selected in the NSW High Performance Team. Joshua Brown was then selected for the NSW State Team and competed at the Interstate Championships in Sydney.

Everyone from Denis the bus driver, officials, coaches, chaperones, gear stewards, and team captains, right down to our youngest competitor, contributed to what I believe was a successful trip. The spirit and camaraderie amongst team members was high all weekend and the Far North Coast Interbranch Team showed they were a force to be reckoned with.

To all team members, including parents and spectators at the carnival, a very sincere thank you for making 2011 Interbranch Team a pleasure to be apart of.

Thank you to our sponsors, Newcastle Permanent and Kozii swimwear for your support. We had many positive comments about our uniform, particularly our swimmers; thanks again Kozii! I urge all clubs to support these sponsors.

A special thank you to Coach Scott McCartney; your enthusiasm and positive nature was infectious, and your ability to communicate and connect with any team member from the U12's to the over 21 year old chaperones was noticed by all! I look forward to working with you in the future.

This Team is something for all athletes, coaches and officials in the Far North to aspire to. It is a goal for so many of our younger athletes and a motivation for our senior athletes. It is important to continue to support the Interbranch Team as it plays a tremendous part in surf sports on the Far North Coast.

The cost of the team in all Branches is an issue. This year with the help of sponsors we managed to reduce our total out lay without reducing the standards of the Team. I believe next season we can increase the number of sponsors and increase the profile of the team and Surf Life Saving on the Far North Coast. Intern this will reduce the total outlay by the Branch and Clubs. This is not a time to be thinking about cost cutting but a time to expand and take opportunities. The population on the Far North Coast is growing at one of the highest rates in NSW we need to tap into it.

Darron BrownFNC Interbranch Team Manager

P.S. Are there any boaties out there that would like to come to Interbranch 2012?

Team Manager

The inaugural “Essential Energy” Far North Coast Branch Pool Rescue Competition was conducted on Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th May at the Southern Cross University Pool in Lismore, New South Wales.

The event was supported very well with seven Branch Clubs in attendance being Cudgen Headland, Brunswick, Byron Bay, Lennox Head, Ballina Lighthouse-Lismore Evans Head-Casino and Yamba. The three North Coast Branch Clubs in attendance were Coffs Harbour, Sawtell and Urunga.

On the Saturday all coach's and competitors in attendance were instructed by four experienced coach's in the rules and methods of Pool Competition. Coaching Instructors attending were Russell Green Australian Head Coach in Pool Competition, Matt Green, Don Van Kempeima N.S.W Head Coach and Peter “Cuz”Kirkwood National Coach.

The Saturday course had attendance of some 50 competitors, and 30 coach's. The Sunday competition had 70 club competitors nominating for the events. Some very fine performances were recorded at the competition. It is anticipated that more training and competition days will be held in the future. The support by Officials for the day was also outstanding with 60 attending.

Byron Bay won the point score for the days competition closely followed by Lennox Head-Alstonville.

Full results can be found in results section of this report

Appreciation is extended to “Essential Energy” the Sponsors for the competition.

Pool Competition

One more season has passed and we have successfully patrolled Fingal Head and surrounds once again. We have had a major set back in relation to the refurbishment of our building, this has affected the members of the committee and the club greatly, with moral being at a low.

I would like to thank all those who spent time on the beach achieving our patrol requirements. We have kept consistency with our patrols and filling the gaps as needed, This year the season was long and towards the end quite difficult to keep our members motivated and vigilant, but we made it – well done to all. Like many clubs we have out core group of patrol member, those that you know will be there, just turning up and doing their bit.

It was the 11th Anniversary of the Tweed River Swim a great effort in organising this event by the Brass Monkeys, we are extremely lucky to have this relationship with the swimming group that look after and coordinate this fun morning for us. This raises considerable funds for the club and we thank them for the efforts they put in to the event.

This year we had a change of the guard with Dave Dempsey taking on the role of Junior Activities Chairperson. This meant that we could keep the kids participation alive. The group was smaller than previous years but they kept coming back each Sunday morning and having fun. Thanks to Dave once again in doing a great job this year.

We hope that this coming year will we see our nippers participating at more carnivals in the Branch and that we can encourage some parents to assist in different areas of the club and become more involved in Fingal Rovers over all.

We assisted Cudgen SLSC and Surf Lifesaving New South Wales with opening our club to assist with the State Championships, by allowing the Boat fraternity access to the clubhouse. It was great to see the school raise funds for the club by charging for parking, this was a great contribution to the school.

Finding the time to be part of a volunteer organisation with, work, family and other commitments is not part of every ones make up but fortunately at Fingal we have a core group of members that work hard and they also have fun along the way.

We are open to encouraging more of our members to become involved in a small way if possible and hope that in the coming years more of them do. This small group of doers considers this assistance to the club normal behaviour and we thank them dearly for the efforts they put in.

We are looking forward to the small off season that we have, even though we will be working behind the scenes doing strategic/business planning, completing the building refurbishment and talking to our members about what they want in 2012/13.

I thank the members at Fingal Rovers for the work that they have done. The support of the local community, our fellow members of other clubs, and the Far North Coast Branch.

Robyn WonsonPresident

Fingal Rovers SLSC

Cudgen SLSC The club has had one of its most challenging seasons in recent times during 2011/12. We have seen the adoption of a new club organisation structure, a change to the clubs Senior Management Team, continued erosion problems on the beach and the hosting of the 2012 NSW Surf Life Saving Championships.

Club Management StructureDuring the season the club commenced a period of change and re-organisation from two separate bodies administering the club to the adoption of a “One Club structure” which comes in line with the SLSNSW models. We anticipate that our members will take a while to fully embrace the new model but are confident that it will provide us with a well-structured club that will maintain a financially sound model to ensure that we remain a strong part of the Far North Coast Branch in the seasons to come. Thanks must go to the previous board and Mike Crawley for assisting with the preparation of the new constitutional framework.

PatrolsThe continued problems again this season with the beach erosion presented further challenges to our patrols requiring the Patrol Captains to remotely locate their Patrols to the Southern end of the beach away from the club house. In the early part of the season there was at times no beach to patrol at high tide, so the gradual return of the sand since the Xmas period has stabilised the beach to a point where we now have a section of sand directly in front of the club. This allowed our last few patrols for the season to patrol in front of the club for the first time in two seasons. I thank our Surf Lifesaving Director Susan Young, Joe Colja, our Patrol Captains and Active Members for their dedication in keeping our beaches adequately patrolled for the season.

CompetitionThe club has had a very successful year in competition at all levels. Congratulations must go to all those Competitors from Cudgen Headland SLSC who represented the club at branch,

Country, State or Australian Titles. The clubs haul of medals at this year's state and Australian titles has resulted in this being our most successful in terms of podium finishes.

A huge effort was put in by our senior competitors during the State and Aussie Titles this season and it was pleasing to see the comradely that has built up with the team this year and the way that they continued to support each other on the beach throughout each event.

The Clubs most outstanding senior competitor of the Aussie Titles went to Codie Klein for her two gold medals in the board riding closely followed by Ashlee Spence with her Gold and Silver medals in the board riding events as well. Both these girls have a big future ahead of them in board riding competition let's hope the sponsors stand up and notice.

Two of the clubs most capped competitors Scott McCartney and Jarrad Cain finished with a closely fought silver in the Open Male Board Rescue going one better than last year's bronze. This was the clubs most hotly anticipated event of the year since they won the NSW State Titles by a country mile and the boys didn't disappoint.

State Titles - (Jnr's - two Gold, one silver and a bronze) (Snrs - three gold, two silver and three bronze medals)Aussie Titles – (three gold and two silver )

Our Masters competitors, led by our proficient medallist Jan Gielis, excelled at both NSW State and the Australian Championships with plenty of podium finishes, demonstrating that the competitor depth in our club is very strong

I extend my thanks to all the parents and supporters who assisted with helping organise the competitors and put in the long hours on the beach. To Phil Klein (Jnr Coach) and Scott McCartney (Snr Coach), well done for the fantastic job of keeping the training squads motivated and developing an enjoyable team environment this season.

Hosting the NSW State ChampionshipsThe club hosted the NSW State Titles for the second and final year. The State Delegation had faith in keeping the titles at Kingscliff and thanks to some favourable weather conditions and the enormous effort put in by our volunteers both the Jnr and Snr events were hailed as a resounding success.

Over 6000 competitors graced our beach over the two weekends from across the state and it was not without its challenges. The split venues did not seem to discourage the numbers of competitors and the supporters that came with them certainly stretched our volunteers manning the BBQ's on the first few days of competition.

The club is very grateful to the Army of volunteers who committed an enormous amount of hours over the two year hosting period. It was pleasing to receive a number of comments from officials, competitors and visitors on how well the carnival was run despite the challenges that we faced with the beach erosion.

State Committee RepresentativesI would like to personally thank the Clubs State Committee ably led by Gary Cain (who was awarded the coveted NSW Sports Federation Volunteer of the Year award) for their tireless efforts in helping to deliver a very successful event.

The club is very proud of its achievement and would also like to thank our sponsors and the other FNC Branch Clubs who provided us with support during the two years that we hosted the event.

New SurfboatThanks to the generosity of two of our long standing sponsors, “Dial Before You Dig” and the “Cudgen Headland SLSC Old Boys Association”, the club purchased their first new boat in 11 years. The boat was aptly named “Robbo' after one of our much loved members, Rowan Robinson, who was tragically killed in Afghanistan in 2011. After all of the hard years of training our boaties may have had some divine intervention when they triumphed with a bronze medal in the 160yrs surfboat race at the recent Australian Titles held at Kurrawa. We are sure that “Robbo” had some sort of influence on their performance in the new boat and have no doubt that we will be hearing about the boaties medal for the next 10 years.

The club thanks the Cudgen Old Boys Association once again this year for their support of our competitors and we look forward to our continued strong relationship for many years to come.

Thank you to: Dial before you dig, Command Building Services, Scandinavian Cone Company, Tweed Shire Council, Solo Resource Recovery, Summerland Credit Union, Markwell's Deep Sea Fisheries, Tweed Coast Weekly, ABC Bricks, Noel Graham Farm Machinery, Cudgen Leagues Club, Kingscliff Bowls Club, Imperial Hotel, JH Williams, Sub Tropical Bananas and all of our many sponsors for their valuable support throughout this season. Your assistance allows our Surf Club to patrol our beach and keep the members of our Community safe.Yours In Surf lifesaving

The completion of the current season sees Salt SLSC continuing to grow and establish a very secure platform to take into the future. Our membership base is very strong in both senior and junior ranks, and our commitment to providing both a safe beach and training facility to the local Tweed community is as willing and evident as ever.

As I write this we are waiting on owners consent, from Tweed Shire Council, to lodge our DA. This will be the culmination of a lot of hard work from the club and it's members. This is also the end of one chapter in our history and the start of another, as we commence the hard work to finalise plans, obtain grants and oversee the construction of the new club.

On this note I would like to thank the Tweed Council for all their assistance and also Ballina and Fingal surf clubs for passing all their experiences of this process on to us. A special thank you also to Scott Carpenter Architects, Darryl Anderson Consulting Services and Josh Neale at Westera Partners Engineering.

On an administration level, the committee at Salt this year has once again done a valuable and professional job. Our committee was, and is, very motivated to achieve best practice, and all outcomes during the season were very positive. Our relationship with FNC Branch continues to blossom and I'm sure this relationship will continue to grow even more.

Our training program once again saw Gary Raso distinguish himself at the highest level. We had another year where large numbers did awards, ranging from Bronze right through. A highlight of the year seeing 4 of our members, Cherie and Gary Raso, Ben Larkin and Richard Adams go over to the Philippines, and in conjunction with the Red Cross, train 23 members to gain awards in the beach side area of Boracay. To say the club is very proud of these 4 people is an understatement as they all paid their own way over and Salt SLSC is investigating ways to become a sister club and assist with the birth and development of the Boracay SLSC. Our patrols are very strong with a great range of awards now right across our membership base.

The competition side was an undoubted highlight of our season. It was fantastic to see the club colours at all the junior events and at both the State and Australian Championships this year. Congratulations to Brandon Copeland on his bronze medal in the U17 2 km run at the NSW state championships. The club is very proud of him. Our juniors were also very successful gaining medals at most of the carnivals they competed in. On behalf of Salt SLSC I would like to congratulate Cudgen SLSC on a magnificent State Titles.

Thank you to all our sponsors who continue to support the club and once again thanks to Wilson Creagan and the FNC Branch for their continued support.

Last but not least, thank you to the members of Salt SLSC. Their efforts and unwavering support of the club is magnificent.

Salt SLSC

Cabarita SLSCThis season has been an exciting one for the Club, it included major building works, increases in patrolling members, leaping over the 600 member milestone and a resurgence of our young adult membership.

Major improvements in the club facility included a cold room which is a shared resource between the club and the cafe, an electronic access system which allows all authorised members 24 hour access and a 24 hour gym. Of course none of this is achieved without the input and hard work of a lot of club members. I thank especially my fellow board members, admin assistant and bar captain. This small group of people have formed a strong team that achieved all the above through good management.

The numbers of people on our beaches over the summer is the largest that I have seen. Cabarita Beach is slowly being discovered by many people from Brisbane and the Gold Coast. What a bonus that we live here and are members of the Surf Club. The upstairs deck area turned 1 over this Christmas break and a quiet party was held that lasted for about 6 weeks. What a great space it has turned out to be.

Increases in beach numbers put greater responsibility on our patrolling members and I am pleased to report that patrolling member numbers increased this year with a strong growth in the under 20 age group. This group has really stood up to be

counted this year, taking positions in the club such as Life Saving Director, IRB captain, First Aid Officer, Patrol Captains and Youth Leaders.

Sadly a life was lost this year when a young man drowned whilst swimming at an unpatrolled section of beach south of Cabarita Headland. As soon as the call went out that help was required to search we had up to 40 members each day over the following 4 days spend most of their daylight hours searching. The local Police Commander and high ranking Surf Life Saving officials contacted me to state how amazed they were at our clubs response and the maturity showed by the large contingent of our youth who formed part of this search team.

This season also marked the 50 year anniversary of the formation of the club. 50 years is a great achievement for this club considering the troubled times faced during those years. A celebration at the club saw a large number of former members from the early years turn up to recount stories from the past.

On Sunday 20th November Cabarita Beach SLSC hosted their first junior carnival for many years. It was very pleasing to see the strong support of the parent helpers who turned up on the two days to setup, run the carnival and pack everything away. To all who helped, a sincere thank you. To the newer faces - welcome to the Caba Family.

For me the outstanding achievement of the year is the strong growth in our youth membership. Their happy smiling faces and desire to be part of what is happening makes me a proud old President.

Patrick RafteryPresident

Life Member Fred Perlenfein and Lifesaving Director Brett Draman with their Silver Medals from State Championships 2012.

It gives me great pleasure to provide the Lennox Head – Alstonville SLSC (LHASLSC) report to the Far North Coast Branch Annual Report.

With the season over, (LHASLSC) can report on a very successful season in all aspects of the Club operations. Membership numbers continue to grow year on year which results in more children enjoying the benefits of Nippers - making new friends, improving their surf skills and most of all having fun.

A special thanks to Denise Young our JAC who once again showed her organisational skills in providing the leadership for Nippers that resulted in another successful year. LHASLSC very fortunate to have a dedicated group of Age Managers who put in an incredible amount of work each week preparing for Sunday and ensuring the kids are both learning and enjoying their time at the beach. The support provided by the mums, dads, grandparents and carers each week is invaluable and ensures we have enough water safety and general “helpers” so the days run smoothly. The heightened focus on water safety for all activities required someone to take on the role of “Water Safety Coordinator”, and LHASLSC was fortunate that Mark Corbett stepped into the role this season and under his leadership the emphasis on ensuring safe conditions to train/compete has enhanced the safety culture within the Club.

A highlight of the season for LHASLSC was the awarding of NSW State Male Nipper of the Year to Harrison Murphy. Harrison has been with the Club for a few seasons now and is an outstanding young man who is a great role model for surf life

saving. This award was truly well deserved and the Club was extremely proud of Harrison. It would be remiss of me not to mention the benefits Harrison gained from his time as a Nipper at Ballina SLSC prior to transferring to LHASLSC.

A special group of helpers that must be mentioned is the BBQ workers. Joe Young has been the BBQ coordinator for the last few years and by the long queues every Sunday, the members clearly enjoy and appreciate his work. Thank you to everyone that helps Joe each week, and especially Craig Sloane who has shown he would be more than competitive if Masterchef had a BBQ only series.

From a competition perspective the members at both the Junior and Senior ranks continue to do the Club proud. LHASLSC was represented at all Junior and Senior Carnivals and some members went on to compete at State and Australian titles with some outstanding results. The commitment of all the competitors both young and those not so young as well as the efforts and skills demonstrated by all who competed is recognition of the capabilities of our coaches led by Lou Wilson and including Tony Barnett, Michael Brown, Ray Leaver, Pat Mounic and Brett Clarke. The time and effort provided by our coaching team to enhance the skills of our junior and senior members is just fantastic and I want to again thank them for all their hard work and early mornings to develop the surf life saving skills of our members.

The tragic death of a competitor at the Australian Titles this year underlined the inherent dangers of our sport. This tragic loss of a young life affected all within Surf Life Saving and the support the family and other competitors received at the Titles was evidence that whilst competition at carnivals can be intense, that when needed the Surf Life Saving movement comes together as one to support each other..This year LHASLSC operated 10 Patrols ensuring that the Lennox Head beach was a safe and enjoyable place to come for both locals and visitors alike. The surf skills and first aide skills of the patrolling members were tested during a very busy and demanding season. The efforts of these members are fantastic and I know the local communities appreciate their ongoing commitment. A big thankyou to Brian Dell our Club Captain and Michele Barnett our Vice Club Captain for the many, many hours of work to establish and support the patrols throughout the season.

I wish to thank Ballina Shire Council for the ongoing support in addressing the ongoing maintenance of the club house as the age and wear of the building requires ongoing repairs. Whilst there is more to do Ballina Shire Council has been a great support to our Club and I look forward to working with them in further developing the Club over the next season. I wish to make special note of the work by Michael Brown the Vice President Building who managed our building issues, your hard work is evident by the improvements we have seen again this year, not least of all the fantastic new deck which I see members

Lenox Head Alstonville SLSC

enjoying every weekend. Special thanks to Jimmy Miller and his team for the great job in building the deck and a special mention to Anthony “Tempo” Masterson who did so much work on our electrical / lights concerns throughout the season.

A special thanks must go to the social club who arranged a number of events for members this year that were all a massive success. The energy and good humour this small band of members provided adds to the social fabric of the club and reminds us that surf clubs are not just about nippers, competition and patrols but also about enjoying each others company.

Surf Clubs need many volunteers to make the Club work effectively. LHASLSC is blessed with the number and quality of volunteers who take on the many and varied roles within our Club.

The work contributed by all of these people who take on roles such as Registrar, Uniform Co-ordinator, Bunk-House Steward, Gear Steward, First Aide Officer, Treasurer, Secretary and the list goes on is appreciated and LHASLSC would not be as successful in meeting the core business of Surf Life Saving if you were not willing to contribute.

I wish to take the opportunity to single out Larry Platt our Chief Instructor, Larry has held this role at the Club for many years and has indicated that he is stepping down from this role at the end of this season.

The educational opportunities and support that Larry has provided the members not only at LHASLSC but across the Branch has been nothing short of brilliant for many years and whilst we will fortunately retain Larry as a member and integral part of the our Club his legacy of a strong educational culture across the FNC Branch is testimony to his years of hard work.

In closing I wish to thank the Management Committee for their tireless work in keeping the club functioning. Much of the work of keeping a club functioning is unseen by members and often goes unrewarded, but I wish to thank you for the energy, passion and commitment you all provide to LHASLSC.

We all look forward to a little break to energise ourselves for the upcoming 2012/13 season.

Another season has come and gone and it's with great pleasure that the Brunswick SLSC submits its report for 2011/2012.

I would like to congratulate all our patrolling members on attendance and conduct this season. Once again Brunswick has had no major incidents. During this season our six dedicated patrols looked after a total of 16747 beach attendees, managed 36 first-aid cases, performed 17 rescues and 1418 prevented actions. Our club members gained 112 SLSC awards this season, thank you all for a job well done.

We would also like to thank our after-hours crew who were on-call 24 / 7 to assist the duty officer with any incidents as they arose.

Congratulations to Beau and Seth Carter on their outstanding performance at the State Age Titles with their Gold and Silver medals and to our team who attended the Country titles. The team members did the club proud with Brunswick SLSC coming in 16th position out of the 33 clubs in attendance.

December saw our 17th Masters Carnival held with trying conditions and the inaugural Con Assumussen trophy for the Best Carnival Effort won by XXXXXXX with a perfect one wave ride from the cans to the beach.

This season saw our club assisting and participating in the Mullum to Bruns Paddle and our 8th Brunswick Family Triathlon. We also conducted the 'Big Bruns Ball' as a fundraiser for our club and cystic fibrosis Australia which we hope to make an annual event.

December also saw a very successful cadet camp with 18 of our young lifesavers learning some essential skills and having a lot of fun and sleepover camp at Dicky Beach on the Sunshine Coast where these skills were further honed.

Thank you to the Branch officials and executives who assisted our club over the season, surfcom for their professional conduct throughout the year, Jimmy Keough for an outstanding job as our duty officer and hope to see you all again next year between the flags.

Byron Bay

It gives me great pleasure to deliver this report on the past season. The 2011 -2012 season proved to be exciting and very successful for the Byron Bay Surf Club. With the distinction of being awarded once again the Far North Coast Branch Club of the Year. And numerous other awards we received at the awards of excellence. This of course comes from committing a lot of time and hard work. Our executive does an incredible job keeping up to date with Surf Life Saving guidelines and requirements.

The continually changing Surf Life Saving requirements place more and more responsibility on our club members to be trained and perform at a very high level.

This year I believe we have increased our overall performance on all aspects of Surf Life Saving and throughout the 2011-2012 season the membership of the Byron bay Surf Life Saving club has continued to build on the clubs impressive history. Participation in training and certification programs has increased and overall our patrols have been extremely strong.

Unfortunately late this season there was a tragedy on and un patrolled beach close to patrol area in which two young men drowned and another was successfully rescued. The rostered patrol was quickly in attendance and acted with outstanding precision, however this had left the patrol area in great need of assistance,Within a very short period of time and with out hesitation both our neighbouring clubs Brunswick and Lennox had sent patrolling members to our aid.

It is great to know that no matter what happens we are all there to help each other. I would personally like to thank these clubs and their participating members for such a quick response in assisting on that day. THANK YOU.

Again we have had a successful nipper season with growing numbers and with this we also see the increasing number of parents becoming more involved in organizing water safety, running barbeques or just simply helping out. This of course was skillfully coordinated by JAC president Joanne Kay and her committee which have done an excellent job during the season

The branch development camps again were a great success this year with the younger members of the Byron Bay club having had a great time thanks to Paul Smith and the many that help out at these events Rescue equipment is first class thanks to the many sponsors who contribute to this necessary cause. This equipment has been wonderfully maintained though out the year by Woody Vidgen and Rodger Beadman. Thanks must also go to the operational members who perform the increasing emergency call out duties.

Surf sports has always been a big part of the Byron Bay Club. This year I am proud to say once again we have successfully defended not only the Far North Coast Branch Championships but also the New South Wales Country Championships.Performances at the New South Wales State and Australian Championships were also of a high standard with strong performances in all ages and disciplines. These achievements are a credit to our many coaches who give up their time to instruct our competitors to perform an elite level.

Thanks to the clubs major sponsors THE BEACH HOTEL, BEACH SUITES, BYRON BAY WINTER WHALES , SOUTHERN CROSS UNIVERSITY, BYRON BAY TRIATHALON ,and GEORGE AND HEATHER KNOTT who believe in what we provide for our local community and supporting our members. Our minor sponsors too play a big part in making the Byron Bay Surf Club what it is today. The Byron Bay Club continues to grow thanks to all who contribute, for with out your generosity we would simply not exist.

In closing I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all the Far North Coast executives and officials for their assistance and support during the past season and wish the in coming office bearers all the best for the coming year ahead.

Neil Cameron.President.

Ballina Lighthouse SLSCSometimes it is best to delay jumping on deadlines to produce reports to reflect on our past season. This year is one such occasion.

In 2010/11 we were in negotiations with Ballina Shire Council to create a workable solution for life saving facilities at Ballina. As of last week, our Council provided an landmark development application consent to ensure appropriate surf life saving facilities will be constructed at Lighthouse beach that provide a key surveillance to North Wall.

Council's desire to move forward promptly once approval was granted manifested with a request to clear out the old storage buildings quickly, and relocate our surf lifesaving facilities back to Shelley Beach. Arrangements were made for a Club work day to allow for all surf life saving equipment to be moved to Shelley Beach – the rollup was brilliant with members from all elements of the Club in attendance.

That decision also had an unintended consequence today, and illustrated the argument of why the availability of beach surveillance is so important to effective life saving. Just before lunch, two French backpackers stopped at Shelley Beach to enjoy a classic North Coast day. Unfortunately, they also took the opportunity to enjoy a swim. Fortunately, through early detection by a Club member and with lifesaving assets immediately accessible Club members were able to recover the patients and provide appropriate recovery support until Ambulance paramedics arrived.

Once again, I would like to thank all our patrolling members who recognise our key responsibility of providing a safe surf experience for visitors. This year has been incredibly busy for our Club. The billboard statistics show over 4,300 hours of patrolling, 94 rescues, 1331 preventative actions and 28 first aid actions. Given the unfriendly beach conditions we experienced over summer, the concentration of interventions is over-represented. We were involved in the search for a missing Korean tourist in the Richmond River, which had a tragic outcome – a preventable drowning that again highlights the need for more effective education for travelers to our shores.

128 lifesaving training awards were completed, and supports our club strategy to ensure professionally trained and resourced patrols for our beach. My thanks to our Chief Training Officer Rod Balkin who dedicated more than 350 hours to club and branch training events through the season.

As is evident through the 307 surf clubs around Australia, an incredible amount of work happens off the beach to ensure our core function is seamless as possible. We have a tremendous management committee and JAC sub-committee and my sincere thanks for their work for our club this season.

I commented last year on our improving youth member

retention and this became more evident this season. It is a genuine pleasure to engage with these fine young people as they put back into their community – we are very proud to include them in our club roster.A return to the competition arena this year saw our first Far North Coast rep for some time with Isabella Jones joining the Inter-branch squad. Special mention to Emma Roberts for her success in Masters competition and it was great to see a surfboat crew meeting the starter's gun at the Aussies this year.

Over the season a decision was made to ensure the Red and Gold cap is part of our compulsory uniform. Interestingly, in speaking to our younger members this is important as they recognize they have “earned the right to wear the cap”. Given the high percentage of members that supported the decision it is a positive endorsement of our heritage.

Our beaches are a safer place from our presence, and in closing my heartfelt thanks to every member who fronted for their patrols to ensure a safe surf experience in Ballina.

Another season has come and gone and it's with great pleasure that we present the report for Evans Head-Casino SLSC for the 2011/2012.

We would like to congratulate all our patrolling members on attendance and conduct this season. Once again Evans Head-Casino has had no major incidents.

During this season our eight dedicated patrols performed over 4120 patrol hours looked after a total of 9886 beach attendees, managed 18 first-aid cases, performed 59 rescues and 372 prevented actions.

We would like to thank Byron Bay and Ballina Surf Clubs for assisting with patrols early in the season while a new group of members gained their awards to fill our patrols, this assistance was much appreciated by our members.

This season our club members gained 306 senior lifesaving awards and all juniors gained Surf Ed awards this season, thanks to Tim Payne club Chief Instructor and his team of instructors for a job well done to help increase the skills of our members.

Congratulations to our 180 Boat Crew on their outstanding performance at all levels of competition with the highlight taking out Gold for the third year at the Australian Titles and Gold at the State Titles & Country Titles. The 160 Boat Crew also congratulation on Silver at the Australian Titles.

It was also great to see a small number of competitors attending Branch and state titles, gaining great results for a first time competing.

This season saw our club host its inaugural Ocean Swim a great effort in organising this event by the our ocean swim sub-committee lead by Ray Adams and Michael Pontefract, despite the weather, this was a successful day and enjoyed by all who attended.

Under the leadership of Teena Redman, nippers had a good season with some of them having never been in the surf before they started nippers.

Tis season we said good bye to Maria Ellis who has been age manager for the past 8 years we thank her for all her hard work. For the first time we took 4 nippers to the SLS Pool Championships at Lismore Uni the kids that a great day.

Thank you to the parents that helped out on the day. Our under 10's to under13's done there basic First Aid this season with a few of them now doing a patrol.

A big thank you to Craig Ellis and the water safety crew for keeping us safe. Some of our nippers took part in the beef week parade what a great day.

This season saw our club completing stage one of extensions, with our new veranda giving us extra essential storage space for rescue equipment. We are looking forward to the next stage with the roof going on to the veranda.

Thank you to the Branch officials and executives who assisted our club over the season, Surfcom for their professional conduct throughout the year.

Evans Head is a safer place from our presence, thank you to every member who fronted for their patrols to ensure the aquatic public have a safe experience while in Evans Head, we hope to see you all again next year between the flags.

It is my pleasure to present the annual report on behalf of Yamba SLSC for the 2011/2012 season with the knowledge that we are able to report that 'no lives were lost during patrol hours 'again this season. Thank you to all patrolling members for your vigilance and service.

Major repairs were carried out to the clubhouse during the off-season, following the boat shed fire in February 2011. The club also received a State Surf Club Facilities Development grant to renovate the upstairs toilets and relocate the office/storage areas.

Heavy seas during the season did result in a significant loss of sand from Main beach, which forced some activities to be held at nearby Turner's and Convent beaches. We are very fortunate to have access to these beaches when conditions require relocation from Main beach.

Both the Junior and Senior Branch Championships were held at Turner's beach in February 2012 and congratulations must go to all club members for the preparation, support and clean-up after both events. Thank you to all Branch officials for the conduct of both carnivals. A job well done by all involved. The second Jacob Lollback Memorial Board Race was held in October 2011 with 150 competitors entered. Hugh Dougherty was a popular winner of the 4klm race.

The Yamba Ocean Swims were held in January 2012, with 250 swimmers entered. Shivaun Street won the 700m and Alyce Bennett the 2klm ladies races. Winners of the mens races were Ben Schafer (700m) and Joe Dougherty (2klm). In April 2012Yamba SLSC hosted the Branch U15-17 Leadership Development Camp, led by Paul Smith, with over 40 participants attending. A successful weekend for all involved. Total Club membership reached 695 during the season, with all categories of membership maintaining similar levels to the 2010/2011 season. Nipper numbers total 209 (202 in 2010/2011).

Congratulations to life members Max Godbee OAM, and Don Lee for achieving Surf Life Saving long service awards, 50yrs and 40yrs respectively.

Awards training have continued to develop under the leadership of Training Coordinator Kim Morgans and his team of trainers and assessors. Awards gained during the season were SRC 10, Bronze 17, ARTC 7, Silver Medallion Basic Beach Management 5, SM IRB Drivers 3, IRB Crew 15, Spinal Management 18, and Apply First Aid 17. Congratulations to all the new award members and the training team. Thank you to Geoff Horsey and Larry Platt for attending and assessing our applicants. In the Competition arena our Masters competitors were medallists at both State and Australian titles. Chris Outteridge won gold at the Australian titles (Over 40 board riding), with bronze medals to Joe Dougherty (30-34 Board and Rescue Tube) and Ben Plunkett (35-39 2klm race). Congratulations to the U19 boat crew for finishing 5th in the final at the Australian titles.

At the State titles gold medals were won by Joe Fahey (35-39 Ironman and single ski), Ben Plunkett (35-39 2klm run) and Chris Outteridge (Over 40 board riding). The over 110 years Surf team of Joe Fahey, Peter Rheinberger and Jim Dougherty won silver and bronze medals went to Chris Outteridge (45-49 board race) and Peter Rheinberger (50-54 yrs Rescue Tube race). In the Junior competition arena our most successful competitor this season was Liam Foster with a bronze medal in the U12 beach sprint at the State titles.

During the season Club members met with Belinda Camp to complete the bronze and silver checklists for the Quality Club Program. Good progress is being achieved with the checklists. The club has reviewed and prepared a new constitution which will be presented to a special general meeting of the club prior to the AGM to be held in July 2012.

Special thanks to all our Sponsors. Your continued support is greatly appreciated.

Thank you to SLSA, SLSNSW and to Wilson Cregan and the Far North Coast Branch Executive for your advice and support during the season.

This season Surfcom Ballina, and Far North Coast Branch took on some new challenges and roles in radio-communications.

Normal daily operations saw Surfcom Ballina covering all surf clubs within the Far North Coast Branch, North Coast Branch and Mid North Coast Branch. Connecting to each Branch via radio is now as simple as flicking a switch! This new system has had it's challenges, working through them meant that no Patrol or Support Service was without a Surfcom for emergency backup.

This season saw Surfcom accumulated 1298.5 hours, thanks to the efforts of a few core operators Ian Leven clocking up 363.8 hours, Jillian Pratten, Roanna Cullen, Damian McDonald, Geoff Horsey all recording over 150 hours in the radio room. Thanks to Roanna Cullen for managing the Surfcom roster this season and making sure that our members on the beach were always covered if an emergency were to accrue.

All the SurfCom Ballina operators have adapted to the new communications system well and have taken it as a personal challenge to learn how to operate the new technology. Clubs should also be proud of their members who not only do beach patrols, but also give their valuable time to assist the wider Surf Life Saving community by volunteering at Surfcom.

Next season Surfcom will move to Shelly Beach Club House in Ballina till permanent premises becomes available during the building of the new Ballina-Lighthouse Surf Club, thanks once again to the Ballina Surf Club for their housing of Surfcom for the Branch.

Finally, thanks go to all Club and Support Service members for their continued support in the SurfCom program as it is there to benefit them, and ultimately to assist in their welfare and most importantly, help to save lives!

We are desperately short of SurfCom operators so if anyone is interested in becoming an operator next season, please email [email protected] or contact FNC Branch. Your help will be greatly appreciated!

Last year, we launched the new boat in March 2011. It is now approaching 100 hrs on the clock and has proven itself in over 40 responses to incidents on the Ballina Bar and on the coast from Evans Head to the Tweed. Our Service gained accreditation for 'Marine Rescue Unit Category 1 (Ministerial Limited – Bar Operations Only) by the State Rescue Board of New South Wales in December 1994. Historically, five of our members have gained Meritorious Bravery Awards for rescues performed in treacherous seas on and around the Ballina Bar.

In December 2012 Elton Cummings and I were invited to Sydney for the annual NSW Maritime Awards Ceremony. I was very proud to receive on behalf of the group, the NSW Maritime Medal for Services to the Community. This award recognised the group's years of service to the boating community and further cemented our reputation for quality aquatic response and rescue. The Medal and Plaque were presented by the NSW Minister for Roads and Maritime, Mr. Duncan Gay.

The continuation of our service wouldn't be possible without the support of major sponsors including the Menegazzo Family, Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation, Ballina RSL and Surf Life Saving NSW.

At our 2010/11 Annual General Meeting, we were extremely pleased to recognise the first Life Member of the service. This significant recognition for years of service as driver, crew, head mechanic and project manager for “Surf Arrestor” was awarded to Ross Trease

We thank our ongoing major service sponsors; Ballina Fishermans Co-op, Kevin Geaghan Funerals, Ballina Car Experts, Ballina Brake and Exhaust, Corporate Insurance Brokers, Ballina Pipeline Plumbing, Cummings Retravision and

Ballina Shire Council.

In 2011, we renewed our relationship with Gold Coast Jet Boat to assist with renewing our proficiencies and assessing awards. We thank them for their assistance.

The group was successful in obtaining grant funding in 11/12 to repair the Jet Boat Shed in Regatta Avenue. Works undertaken included a new walkway, jetty and pylons, new slab and winch for launching the Jet Ski, new roller doors, new roof, paint job, repairs to electrical, additional lighting, new winch for boat to address OHS issues with cable of old system and also provide free spool option for rapid deployment and new signage. We also cleaned out the shed and installed new cupboards and gear racks as well as installing a hot water system.

The essential maintenance listed above will last many years and greatly assist with service delivery. Elton Cummings and Mark Puglisi have done a superb job organising the works.

As a group we have also discussed our service requirements for Jet Ski's and how we can best integrate as a support service on the North Coast. This resulted in a group decision to dispose of our second Jet Ski via a sale to Branch. The group would also like to thank Michael Pontefract with his assistance in training our groups Jet Ski operators.

The group really has functioned effectively over the last 12 months and the future looks great. We have the ongoing challenge to ensure compliance with both State Rescue Board proficiency and accreditation requirements as well as SLSNSW. Something we take very seriously.

I personally wish to acknowledge the efforts of our leadership group which includes Mark Puglisi, Simon Fogarty, Bradley Heard, Geoff Horsey, Ross Trease, Terry Mortimer and Elton Cummings. Finally I acknowledge the service of all of our volunteers who make the JRB what it is. Without their sacrifice in time and dedication, we simply don't exist.
