Dear Duhawk Fans,

I am thrilled to welcome you to Bierie Field in the Rock Bowl on the campus of Loras College. The entire Loras community is glad you are here to experience our historic, beautiful and state-of-the-art facilities. Whether you are here of the first time or back again, please know that you are welcomed by our athletic department, faculty and staff and most importantly our student body.

The Loras College athletic department is constantly striving to extend the classroom for all of our student-athletes. Teachable moments occur for our coaches and student-athletes literally hundreds of times a day at practice and games. Traits like strength of character, sportsmanship, a solid work ethic and teamwork

are taught and reinforced to produce Loras College alumni who will serve the world with integrity!

As members of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, another department goal is to compete at the highest level in all athletic venues. Our coaches are recruiting not only young men and women of character, but also athletically gifted and talented young people. It is my belief that you will see well rounded student-athletes who demonstrate both integrity and athletic prowess today.

In the end, we hope you enjoy your day at Loras College. We hope you are able to spend time on the entire campus and experi-ence the tradition and engaging personalities that make us all Duhawks.

Thanks for coming and as always…Go Duhawks!

HOME OF THE DUHAWKS: THE ROCK BOWL

ATHLETIC AND WELLNESS CENTER

Renovated for the start of the 2005 season, the Rock Bowl is now a state-of-the-art facility with all of the history of the Rock Bowl and still in the same location – right in the center of the Loras campus. Field turf enables the Rock Bowl to not only house the football team, but also the Loras soccer teams and Wahlert Catholic High School football. With the high-tech video scoreboard, brand new bleacher seating for 3,500 spectators, a purple track and a fully equipped press box, the Rock Bowl will be the home of Loras football for many years to come.

The construction of the 74,189 square-foot athletic and wellness facility began in June 2006 and opened in November 2007. This newest structural addition to our campus includes:

— The locker room facilities support Loras students, visitors and comprehensive student-athlete needs. In addition, there are coaches’ offices, a concessions/retail area, hospitality area, an athletic training room and storage.

— A basketball/volleyball arena with maximum traditional seating for 1,732 spectators. The same venue for concerts/speakers provides seating capacity between 2,289 and 2,913.

— A two-level fitness center overlooking lower campus provides 9,500 square-feet of strength and conditioning and cardiovascular space.

On behalf of our entire coaching staff, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2011 Loras College football season.

As a Loras College alumnus, I am especially honored to return to the Rock Bowl and lead this group of young men as head football coach. My memories of Loras College, my growth as a young man on this campus, and my deeply held convictions about what it means to be a Duhawk have all contributed to my return.

I believe Loras College football has a bright future, and that future begins in 2011.

We have talented and hard-working Duhawks on this roster who understand the expectations we as a coaching staff have for them - both on the football field and in the classroom. This understanding, commitment, and appetite for success provides us with a formula we believe will produce disciplined football on Saturdays as well as graduates of Loras College we can all be proud of.

Our student-athletes are proud to call themselves Duhawks and we expect to compete every day with intensity, toughness, consistency, commitment, poise, and enthusiasm.

We’re glad you can experience these things with us today as a part of the Duhawk family. Enjoy the game!

Sincerely,

Paul Mierkiewicz (’89)Head Football Coach

Loras has a long-standing history of athletic success—athletes and fans are proud to be Duhawks!

Loras offers 21 varsity sports – 11 for men and 10 for women. As an NCAA Division III school, Loras participates in the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Student-athletes are widely successful: hundreds have been All-Conference, All-American, All-Academic, Conference and National champion athletes. At Loras student-athletes are students first. Coaches go the extra mile to make sure students are athletically and academically successful. Football has been an important part of these athletes’ lives. Their academic and athletic experiences at Loras will help them to be winners for a lifetime.

Loras College Highlights• At Loras students choose from more than 40 majors and 12 pre-professional areas of study.

As a liberal arts college, regardless of the major, students are exposed to a variety of subjects providing a well-rounded education.

• Loras has maintained its highest ranking ever for a second year in a row at the 11th spot among 319 Midwest baccalaureate colleges and universities in the 2010 edition of “America’s Best Colleges” by U.S. News & World Report. Loras is also ranked in the top colleges for highest graduation rate among those in the same category.

• In 2010, approximately 1,200 Loras students engaged in 40,000 hours of community service, earning the College its fourth straight year of recognition for being named to the President’s higher Education Community Service honor Roll (the last two years with distinction).

• Loras’ affordability is further underscored by our continued inclusion in the 10th edition of Barron’s Best Buys in Education, which recognizes only 240 colleges.

• Over 90% of our students study abroad, participate in service trips or service learning, and work internships.• The Corporation for National and Community Service for another consecutive year has honored Loras College with a place

on the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for exemplary service efforts and service to America’s communities. This year Loras College received this award with Distinction.

• Loras College ranked in the top 30 of Baccalaureate Colleges in the 2010 Washington Monthly College Rankings. This recognition is achieved based on a variety of criteria but primarily for Loras students’ exemplary community service.

• U.S. News & World Report ranks Loras in the top six for graduation rates nationally.

Established in 1839, Loras College is deeply rooted in the Catholic faith and the liberal arts tradition. Nestled high atop the majestic bluffs of the Mississippi River in Dubuque, Iowa, Loras College overlooks the states of Illinois, Wisconsin and Iowa. At Loras College, academic success is the primary goal for our student-athletes and the support system provided for them is an essential part of their success in the classroom. This program is designed to provide specific, thorough and individualized resources to our athletes by utilizing the professional staff in place at Loras College – along with a team of dedicated tutors and committed professors from across campus.

Like football, this program is a team effort. Kyle Klapatauskas, our academic success and retention coordinator, helps facilitate and organize tutors, special study sessions and lectures on how to achieve academic success. Helena Hall leads the Writing Center where our athletes go to receive help developing, writing and editing papers. In addition to these resources, we also offer a Math Lab staffed by the mathematics department faculty.

The final piece of the team is made up of our Faculty Athletics Representatives – Deb Sazama and Hugh Graham. These two faculty members play a large role in building strong relationships with the entire faculty and provide a constant voice ensuring balance between academics and athletics.

Founded in 1923 and recognized as one of the top NCAA III leagues in the nation, the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference consists of nine private, liberal arts institutions.

The IIAC sponsors 15 intercollegiate championships in men’s and women’s sports. The IIAC has proven to be one of the nation’s most dominant conferences, annually having many of its teams finish highly at the NCAA III national level.

iiAC MiSSiOn StAtEMEntThe Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) consists of independent, regionally accredited, residential four-year, liberal arts colleges that share common academic philosophies and goals and that place primary emphasis on the academic progress of students. To that end the athletic programs of IIAC member institutions facilitate the intellectual, spiritual and physical development of all students, whether as participants or spectators.

Members of the IIAC place highest priority on the overall quality of the educational experience of our student-athletes and their successful completion of it. Therefore, the member colleges seek to provide an environment in which athletic activities are conducted as an integral part of our student-athletes’ educational experience. In that vein, intercollegiate competition is provided by the IIAC to develop participants’ skills in self-discipline, teamwork, fair play, sportsmanship and ethical conduct; it is not provided primarily to serve the entertainment needs of spectators nor the talent needs of professional sports teams.

Student-athletes in the IIAC should experience growth of physical and mental skills as well as an appreciation for the rewards of adequate preparation and superior performance. They also should learn to work and play with others who are unlike themselves but who are talented and productive persons. They also should experience the pride of representing an organization, not just themselves, and the responsibility of proper conduct that comes with it. But primarily, they should have the opportunity to excel in their academic work as well as in their athletic endeavors; competitive events and practice sessions will be scheduled to minimize the potential conflict between academic and athletic excellence. In sum, athletic competition in the IIAC serves to encourage our students to participate in activities beyond the classroom, to enhance skills helpful to career success, and to assist them in their general development as human beings.

Paul Mierkiewicz enters 2011 in his first year as the head football coach at Loras College, returning to his alma mater, where he was a four-year member of the team from 1985-1989 and the coaching staff from 1992-1998.

Mierkiewicz previously served as the head coach at Hastings College in Hastings, Neb., since 2001. Under his direction, the Broncos went 65-41. Mierkiewicz’s 65 wins are third most in Bronco history. He also served as the offensive coordinator and assistant athletic director from 1998-2001. The offense broke 12 school records during the 1999 season and also finished the regular season undefeated for the second consecutive year.

Mierkiewicz graduated in 1989 from Loras College with a bachelor’s degree in physical education with teaching credentials. He served as the running back coach and head strength coach starting in 1992 until he was promoted to offensive coordinator in 1994. Mierkiewicz earned his master’s degree in 1995 at Loras College in physical education with an emphasis in athletic administration.

“Loras College is a wonderful place with tremendous people and tremendous student-athletes, and I’d be lying if I said it didn’t feel like a bit of a homecoming for me.” Mierkiewicz said shortly after his hiring. “And (the city of) Dubuque just continues to show what a great place it is to live and work.”

Mierkiewicz is a native of Morton Grove, Ill. He and his wife Heather have two daughters, Jensen and Abigail. His time spent in the Catholic education system includes both his time at Loras College and at Notre Dame High School (Niles, Ill.).

The Loras College Athletic Trainers are an integral part of Duhawk Athletics. The athletic trainers work to prevent, treat, and rehabilitate those who are injured, and strive to provide the teams with safe and healthy student-athletes who can compete within the philosophy of Loras College, the Iowa Conference, and the NCAA. Each practice and home athletic event has a Certified Athletic Trainer who is responsible for any medical issues which may arise.

Joining the certified staff is a varying number of students who earn experience and credit hours while helping to execute the daily duties of the athletic trainer. These students combine their field work with academics while pursuing their degree in the nationally accredited athletic training education program.

Loras College Football service Work

In Loving Memory of jackBeginning in 2009, a young man by the name of John Patrick (Jack) Callahan III was to join the Loras College community and football team as he began his life as a young man outside of the walls of his Chicago, Illinois home. On the day of his 2009 graduation from Marist High School, Jack entered into eternal life following a seizure while he slept at his home. Jack was set to transition from his life as a RedHawk defensive lineman to that of a Duhawk defensive lineman. The Loras College community, football coaches and student-athletes continue to extend their prayers to Jack and the Callahan family in 2011. In recognition of his life - and Jack’s impact on those around him - no one on the Loras College football team will wear jersey number 61, his number at Marist High School, until the fall of 2013, when it would have been available again for someone else to wear.

Rest in peace, John Patrick Callahan III.

For the fifth consecutive spring the Loras College football team volunteered their time on a Saturday to Camp Albrecht Acres in nearby Sherrill, Iowa. Albrecht Acres “provides a unique environment for people with special needs” in the tri-state area. Activities offered by Albrecht Acres include nature study, camping, fishing, swimming, dances, nature trails, hay rides, volleyball, and disc golf.

strength and Conditioning

A native of Pella, Iowa, Josh Edwards attended Central College in Pella where he received his bachelors in exercise science and health promotion in 2003. While at Central he was a four-year member of the football team. He also served from 2001-2003 as an intern in the strength and conditioning department. After graduation he worked from 2003-2004 as the assistant strength coach under Jake Anderson. Edwards attended Winona State University in Winona, Minn., graduating in 2006 with a master of science in educational

leadership degree. While at Winona State he worked as the graduate assistant strength and conditioning coach for two years and, after graduating, changed roles to director of football strength and conditioning and defensive line coach from 2006-2007. During the 2007-2008 school year, Edwards was the assistant strength and conditioning coach at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. He was in charge of the men’s and women’s golf and tennis programs, and assisted with the football program. Edwards is in his fourth year as head strength and conditioning coach and his third as linebackers coach at Loras. He handles all the strength, conditioning, agility and nutritional development for all 21 athletic teams. Edwards resides in Dubuque, with his fiancé Tristen and son Jackson.

Mission: Under the direction of Loras’s full-time strength and conditioning coordinator, Josh Edwards, the Loras College strength and conditioning program supports the missions of both the Athletics Department and the College. In addition, Loras strength and conditioning is committed to helping student-athletes maximize their athletic potential while decreasing the chance for injury.

Philosophy: The Loras College strength and conditioning program is in place to support the student-athlete by providing as many services as possible to help them achieve high levels of performance. This can be accomplished by applying five important principles: Ground-based movements; 3-dimensional movements; multiple joint movements; biomechanical and nutritional analyses; and acceleration and agility development.

“Support, Serve, Socialize”

Hello from TEAM DUHAWK!

Last year, we launched Team Duhawk with great response from alumni, parents, and the community. We are excited to continue this new tradition at Loras College.

Team Duhawk is the “team behind the teams.” Team Duhawk supports the mission of the Loras College Department of Athletics and provides our student-athletes with the resources they need to succeed in and out of the classroom. With the rising costs of travel and need to remain competitive in the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and the NCAA Division III, your support is needed. Your gift will provide opportunities for all student-athletes to train and compete at the highest levels, while also growing intellectually, spiritually, and personally.

The first $25 of your gift will benefit the Team Duhawk General Athletic Fund, which supports all 21 varsity sports, the athletic training department, the spirit squad, and our athletic facilities. Any additional amount may be designated to an area of your choice.

Thank you for your past support and for considering joining today!

Sincerely,

Bob Quinn (’86)Director of Athletics

P.S. You can follow the Duhawks, sign up for text message updates, and hear live broadcasts at www.duhawks.com. The Duhawks can also be found on Facebook and Twitter.

Bob Quinn (’86) Director of Athletics
