Shelby County RSVP Retire to Inspire April 2011 New Program – Shelby County Yellow Dot Program Kick-off scheduled The Yellow Dot Program was created to assist citizens during automobile accidents when they might not be able to communicate for themselves. Shelby County RSVP is working with first responders, law enforcement agencies, mayor’s, and State Farm agents in Shelby County on a program where if you are involved in an auto accident, a yellow dot decal on your car window will alert the first responders that there is vital personal information about the person in the car’s glove compartment. We plan to initiate this program after the first of May. More information will be forthcoming in the near future as this program develops. Members of your station, their families, and the community can participate at no cost. Volunteers are needed to enroll citizens into the program. A kick-off event is planned May 3 at the Shelby County Service Building in Pelham in the Community Room on the second floor at 1 pm. This will be a press conference making the Yellow Dot available to the citizens of Shelby County. Shelby County RSVP will be scheduling enrollment dates and sites in the program after this date. Spring Senior PicnicAt the Alabaster Senior Center, May 19 from 9-1

Down by the Old Mill StreamMay is Older Americans Month! You’re invited for lunch, entertainment, exhibits, vendors, and door prizes. The flyer included with the newsletter gives more information to include directions to the Alabaster Senior Center. In case of rain the event will be held at the Shelby County Exhibition Center in Columbiana.

Please post the Senior Picnic FlyerCall (205) 670-5770 by May 6 to make your reservation. Please indicate total number in your party. It is important to have an accurate count for ordering purposes. PLEASE NO CHILDREN or GRANDCHILDREN because of the space! We are expecting a large number of seniors. This event is for SENIORS 55 YEARS OF AGE OR OLDER.

Ms. Senior Shelby County Pageant

Ms. Senior Shelby County Pageant is being planned for April 30. The event location has yet to be determined. This is an opportunity for ladies 60 years of age or older to reach her childhood dream. The event will consist of talent, philosophy of life (both written and verbal), and formal wear. Edwina Chappell, Ms. Senior Alabama 2008, is coordinating the pageant. Volunteer Opportunities

Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama – RSVP has been invited to volunteer for the Honda Indy Grand Prix April 8-10 at Barber’s. There are a number of volunteer committees volunteers can serve. The volunteer package contains a t-shirt, hat, parking pass, and breakfast and lunch on days worked. The $50 volunteer fee has been waived for RSVP volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering for this event, please contact my office (669-3837) to get the code for the volunteer application to waive the fee.

The Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo will be opening their welcome public information center in the near future. They will be looking for volunteers to greet and assist visitors with information and directions.

Shelby Iron Works – Volunteers are needed for the spring event at the Iron Works in Shelby. The event will be April 30. Kitchen and dining room help is most needed. Assistance with exhibits and merchandising is available.

Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade and Program – work with or on the committee for the annual MLK parade and program conducted annually in Montevallo. This will include helping with parade participation and the program honoring Dr. King after the parade.

Jane B. Holmes Public Library – the Helena Public Library is seeking individual(s) who can work the information desk, shelve books, front books, circulation assistance, and dust shelves.

Sunshine Manor – an adult day healthcare facility, located on Valleydale Road, offers a variety of activities, including exercising, music, devotions, games, and individuals who will share life experiences. They are especially interested in individual who have had prior military experiences.

South Shelby County Community Health Fair – April 9 at the Liberty Baptist Church from 9 am -12 pm in Chelsea.

Alabaster Senior Center –hosting Senior Health & Wellness – Tuesday, May 3 from 9am to 12 pm. The Alabaster Senior Center is located at 1097 7th Street SW, Alabaster

Shelby County Senior Picnic – May 19, Alabaster Senior Center, 9 am – 1 pm.
