President’s MessageLifeisfullofchanges.Infact,lifewouldbequiteuninterestingwithoutchange.

Somechangesarescheduled,planned,routine–thebeautifulchangingoftheseasons;thejoyofseeingyourfamilygrowandbecomemoreindependenteachyear.

Otherchangesareunforeseenandmeananunexpectedturnintheroadoflife.Inbusiness,thiscouldmean

increasedjobresponsibilitiesorworkload,anewemployer,oranewcareerpath.Andjustwhenyouthoughtourindustrywasstartingtosettlebackintoafamiliarrhythm,manyofourcol-leaguesarebeingfacedwithnewchangesandchallenges.

TheincentiveindustryinCanadacontributesmanymillionsofdol-larstotheeconomy.Yet,despiteitsfinancialclout,itisstillaveryintimateindustry.Thiswasveryapparentatthisyear’sIncentiveWorksshow,whereI’msurenotoneattendeewasabletocom-pleteanaislewithoutmeetingsomeonetheyknew.IncentiveWorkshasalwaysbeenaverysocialshow,andthechanceencounterswithpastcolleagues,friendsandbusinessacquain-tancesaregenuinelyjoyful.

OnasmallerscalethanIncentiveWorks,thischancetomakestrongindustryconnectionshappensateachofSite’sevents,andonourvariouscommittees,bothlocallyandinternationally.Infact,becauseoftherelativelysmallsizeofSite,theseconnectionsturnintolastingfriendships,withourmembersgenuinelycaringabouteachother-providingeachofuswiththemuchneededsupportwhenoneofthoseunexpectedchangesinlifehappens.

MyinvolvementwithSiteandthebusinessconnectionsI’vemadehaveabsolutelybeenbeneficialfromacorporateperspective.ButIcanalsohonestlysay,thatIhavehadthedistinctpleasureofget-tingtoknowmanyofourmembersmuchbetterthanIpreviouslydid,severalofwhomInowamprivilegedtocallfriends–andthisisnotauniqueexperienceamongstourmembers.Siteislikeanextendedfamily,readytoprovideeachotherwithguidanceandsupport.Site’sconnectionsensurelife’schangesaremetwithnewexcitingopportunities.

Linking Up for Some GloriousGolfAngusGlenGolfCourse,homeoftheCanadianOpenwasthehostofthisyear’sSiteCanadagolftournament.Theeventsoldoutweeksinadvanceanddeliveredaninteractiveenvironmentconnectingbuyersandsupplierpartnersinarelaxed,fundayonthelinks.

Thedaystartedearlywithafullbuffetbreakfastfollowedby(144)eagergolfershittingthecourseforan8:00amshotgunstart.Eachholewassponsoredbyourindustrypartnerswhoofferedrefreshmentsandsome“creative”entertainmentforachancetowinsomegreatprizesthatwereannouncedattheAwardsReceptionimmediatelyfollowingthetournament.

Specialrecognitionisextendedtoourmediasponsor,M&IT,fortheirmarketingsupportandofficiallyendorsingoureventaspartoftheIncentiveWorksprogram.Wesincerelyappreciatethepartnershipandenjoybeingpartofthekick-offtoafantas-ticweekofeducationandnetworking.

Byspecialarrangement,SiteCanadamembershadapeekbehindthecurtainsintothecovetedartifactvaultsoftheRoyalOntarioMuseum.LedbytwooftheROM’sexpertcurators,participantswereshowntheintricateinlaidmetaltreasuresburiedover2,200yearsagobyChina’sFirstEmperor,QinShiHuang.

Fromthere,participantswerethefirsttoseeTheWarriorEmperorandChina’sTerracottaArmyexhibition-thelarg-estcollectionofartifactsrelatedtothewarrioremperoreverdisplayedinNorthAmerica.ItisoftendescribedastheEighthWonderoftheWorld.

Theeasytoreadandfollowexhibitiontraceskeymomentsinhistorybefore,duringandafterthelifetimeofYingZheng.NearlyathirdoftheartifactsondisplayhaveneverbeenshownoutsideofChina,andsomehaveneverbeenpubliclydisplayedanywhere.

LifeinNewfoundlandisdominatedbythewater,andallofthewondrousjoysandmanyextremeweatherrisksassociatedwiththemightyAtlanticOcean.Yes,icebergscanfloatbyintheSpring,andwhalesintheirnortherlysummermigrationgorgeontheabundantfoodsource,capelin,aroundNewfoundland.Birdsanctuariesforpuffins,gannetsandmanyotherseabirdsabound.ThosebeautifulcovesandharbourswithincrediblyfriendlyandgenuinepeopleofNewfoundlandreallyarejustaroundeverycorner.But,don’tunderestimatedistancesandtimerequiredfortransfers…it’salmost900kmfromtheSWtipoftheislandatPortAuxBasquestoStJohn’s,andcantake12hourstodrive.MajortourismspotslikeGrosMorneNationalParkisa1hourflightora9-hoursdrivefromStJohn’s.Thekey…carefullyplanandpaceyouroff-siteevents.

BeingoutdoorsisavitalpartofanytriptoNewfoundland,butweatherdependencyishighatalltimesofyear.So,makesureeveryonebringslayersofclothesforeachevent.Remember,‘whenthegullsflyhigh,stormyweatherisnigh,butaredskyatnightisasailor’sdelight’!

WhattriptoNewfoundlandwouldbecompletewithoutexperiencingthecreatedtraditionsof‘kissingthecod’...theNewfoundlandversionofkissingtheBlarneyStone,andbeing

‘screeched-in’withablendofrum,arelicofabygonetradeagreementwithJamaica,wheresaltcodwasexchangedforbarrelsofruminbuccaneeringtimes.

InjustacoupleofdaysItotallylostmyselfinthespiritofNewfoundlandandfoundsimple,perfectwarmthandgreathospitality…morethanenoughtocreateadreamortwo.

Especiallynow,spareathoughtforthosewonderful,friendly,yetincrediblyproudandresilientpeopleofNewfoundlandrecoveringinthewakeofHurricaneIgor.InafewhoursinlateSeptember,MotherNatureshowedherextremeferocitywithwindsover160kmandtorrentialrainscausingfloodingofhomes,severewashoutsofroads,cuttingoffnumerouscom-munities…which,whenallissaidanddone,willcosthundredsofmillionsofdollarstorepair.Mercifully,allofthepeople,saveonepoorelderlygentleman,weresparedtheultimatepriceinallthewrathanddestruction.Thereisnodoubtthattheindomi-tablespiritandoptimismofNewfoundlanderswillbouncebackquickly,andbeforeyouknowit,wewillall‘govigorouslyinsearchofpeople,adventures,andplacestoexperience’.Thatturnedouttobesome‘playfulbreeze’…yetsomepieceofheaven!
