UNION UNIVERSITY 2010 season outlook

Union University soball head coach Heather Hall is starng her third season with the program and looks to build on a third place conference finish from a year ago. Union is returning 10 players from last season, including the top three in bang average and RBI. Union also brings in 10 newcomers to the program in hopes of winning an eighth TranSouth Conference Title and a advancing to their seventh appearance in the NAIA Naonal Tournament.

Union has just three seniors on the squad. Candice Thompson returns for her fourth year with Union and will play both in the ouield and catcher. Lindsey Landreneau is back for her third season aer an all-conference perfor-mance and a team-high .376 bang average in 2009. Ali Thomas returns for her second season and was an all-con-ference performer in 2009 with a .368 average.

The junior class equals the seniors with the smallest class on the roster of three players. Briany Burke returns at third base aer missing last season with injury. Sara Beth Redmon played second base last season in 42 games. New to the team this season is Amber Hayes who can play shortstop and first base and brings a powerful bat to the lineup.

Six sophomores are on the 2010 roster for Union, including five who are back for their second season. Ali Bozza played in 33 games last season but was limited due to injury. Kae Davis was third on the team with a .358 average and was named an all-conference player. Emily Anthony played in 19 games for Union. Hailee Edwards is the lone returning pitcher for Union. She was 12-6 as a freshman. Carmesha Owens played in 32 games last season at third base. The lone newcomer in the sophomore class is Sarah Freeman who will bale for a spot, but does have good pop in her bat.

The largest class on the roster is the group of freshmen, made up of eight players. Taylor McAlister plays the out-field and has good speed and good arm. Keaton Kirk, sister of former Union soball player, Krisn, and daughter of former Union baseball star, Tony, will compete for a spot in the ouield and will also give quality innings as a pitcher. Stephanie Saunders will play first and will provide a lot of offensive power in the lineup. Britney Garner can play several posions and also has a power bat that gives Union opons. Brooke Thomas is a highly touted pitcher and will also see me in the ouield. Michelle Piper pitches and plays in the ouield, but her speed will get her into games as a pinch runner as well. Caroline George will spend a lot of me in the pitching circle as a freshman, and is mature beyond her classificaon. Sam Giesler is a true ulity player that will be in the lineup and play different posi-ons.

Union made strides last season as they worked to return to contenon for conference tles. The Lady Bulldogs re-turn several key players on offense and defense, but will expect a lot from new pitching arms this season.

About the NAIAThe purpose of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) is to promote the education and development of students through intercollegiate athletic participation. Member institutions, although varied and diverse, share a common commitment to high standards and to the principle that participation in athletics serves as an integral part of the total educational process. The NAIA embraces the concept of the student and recognizes the importance of the individuality of each member institution, the value of the conferences and Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) structure, and the benefits of membership in a national association.

The NAIA supports gender equity. Gender equity is an atmosphere and reality where fair distribution of overall athletic opportunity and resources, proportionate to enrollment, are available to women and men, and where no student-athlete, coach or athletics administrator is discriminated against in any way in the athletics program. That is to say, an athletics program is gender-equitable when the men’s sports program would be pleased to accept as its own the overall participation opportunities and resources currently allocated to the women’s sports program and vice versa.

Advancing sport with innovative changeThe NAIA has 50,000 student-athletes participating at nearly 300 member colleges and universities throughout the United States and Canada. Divided into 25 conferences and the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.), the NAIA offers 23 championships in 13 sports.

Since 1937, the NAIA has continued a long tradition of pushing the envelope and making a positive difference in the lives of students, coaches and parents. The Champions of Character program is the latest cutting-edge addition to the NAIA’s proud history of innovation (www.championsofcharacter.org).

Through Champions of Character, the NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every student-athlete, coach, official and spectator are committed to the true spirit of competition through the five core values: respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership and sportsmanship.

NAIA at a Glance• Nearly 300 member colleges and universities • 23 national championships • 650,000 students • First to include black colleges and students in championships • First to include women in national championships • First to develop system-wide character initiative with substantive programming
