    Hypothalamus

    The hypothalamus makeshormones that control the pituitarygland. In addition, it makeshormones that are stored in thepituitary gland.

    Pituitary gland

    The pituitary gland produceshormones that regulate many of theother endocrine glands.

    Parathyroid glands

    These four glands releaseparathyroid hormone, whichregulate the level of calcium inthe blood.

    Thymus

    During childhood, the thymus

    releases thymosin, which stimulatesTcell development.

    Adrenal glands

    The adrenal glands release epinephrineand nonepinephrine, which help thebody deal with stress.

    Pineal gland

    The pineal gland releases melatonin, which is

    involved in rhythmic activities, such as dailysleep-wake cycles.

    Thyroid

    The thyroid produces thyroxine, whichregulates metabolism.

    Pancreas

    The pancreas produces insulin and glucagon, whichregulate the level of glucose in the blood.

    Ovary

    The ovaries produce estrogen and progesterone. Estrogenis required for the development of secondary sexcharacteristics and for the development of eggs.Progesterone prepares the uterus for a fertilized egg.

    Testis

    The testes produce testosterone, whichis responsible for sperm production andthe development of male secondary sexcharacteristics
