Rockford favorite Jeffrey Biegel returns to celebrate the 200th birth anniversary of Chopin and to introduce a concerto, new to the repertoire, by Keith Emerson of Emerson, Lake, and Palmer. Brahms labored for more than ten years to produce his triumphant fi rst symphony, which earned the nickname “Beethoven’s 10th” and remains one of the most beloved symphonies of audiences today.

In the largest presentation of the season, the RSO is joined by more than 100 adult and children’s voices for the explosive and distinctive Carmina Burana. Carl Orff’s epic work is one of the most popular of all choral music. George Gershwin captures the sights and sounds of Paris as experienced by an American traveling to the city for the fi rst time.

The fi rst concert of 2011 warms up the Coronado with Gazebo Dances by the composer of The Red Violin and Wagner’s salutation to German art and culture, the comedic Die Meistersinger. Russian cellist Dmitry Kouzov performs the stunning Dvorák cello concerto, described by Maestro Larsen as “the greatest cello concerto ever written.”

The RSO’s own Karl Rzasa performs Mozart’s joyous bassoon concerto. The 2nd Symphony, from Beethoven’s “Early period,” is an energetic work born in a period of intense strife in the composer’s life. Prokofi ev’s 20th Century “Classical” symphony pays homage to Mozart and Haydn.

Celebrate the season with Rockford’s most anticipated Holiday tradition. The Mendelssohn Chorale returns for this annual outpouring of seasonal music and holiday cheer. Join in with a sing-along of carols and holiday tunes!

In the fall, Steven Larsen and celebrity judges will host auditions to choose talented fi nalists from the Stateline area. These contestants take center stage with the RSO to perform live at the fi nal Pops concert of the season. That night, the audience will determine who will become the Rockford Idol.
