Recent Office Events OLYMPIC SITE VISIT Having been quick to respond to the Landscape Institute's offer back in March of a visit to the London 2012 Olympic site, 3 members of the EA team took up the opportunity to have a guided tour around the site by ex LI President and now ODA Parklands and Public Realm sponsor John Hopkins. Almost since the bid was announced in 2005 there has been a lot of talk about the 'green' heart of the 2012 games and the 'legacy' aspect of the 'make over' for Stratford. What was obvious from this 1 hour bus trip around the site is that not only are they delivering all of what has been promised but it would appear they are doing so well ahead of schedule and under budget with the Parklands & Public Realm due for completion by July 2011. The 'Populous' stadium is taking shape, the Zaha Hadid Aquatic Centre is looking like a manta ray and the Wilkinson Eyre Basket Ball Arena looks as though it has just sprung up out of the landscape and sits beautifully next to Hopkins Architects' Velodrome. But the star of the show for me is the McAslan & Partners Energy Centre - it oozes substance and sits comfortably at the core of the site. ROUSHAM GARDENS, OXON The exquisite gardens at Rousham, Oxfordshire, designed by William Kent in the 1700's, and which remain virtually unchanged 300 years later, have become the inspiration for a new landscape project currently being developed by the team at Exterior Architecture. We particularly like the 'moments' throughout the landscape such as the thin meandering paths, the groups of trees, and the positioning of buildings and statues to intensify perspectives and composition: the meandering rill is a particularly powerful yet simple example of this.
