OLYMPIC SITE VISITHaving been quick to respond to theLandscape Institute's offer back in March of a visit to the London 2012Olympic site, 3 members of the EA team took up the opportunity to have a guided tour around the siteby ex LI President and now ODA Parklands and Public Realm sponsorJohn Hopkins. Almost since thebid was announced in 2005 therehas been a lot of talk about the'green' heart of the 2012 games and the 'legacy' aspect of the'make over' for Stratford. Whatwas obvious from this 1 hour bus trip around the site is that not onlyare they delivering all of what hasbeen promised but it would appearthey are doing so well ahead of schedule and under budget with the Parklands & Public Realm due for completion by July 2011. The 'Populous' stadium is taking shape, the Zaha Hadid Aquatic Centre is looking like a manta ray and the Wilkinson Eyre Basket Ball Arena looks as though it has just sprung up out of the landscape and sits beautifully next to Hopkins Architects' Velodrome. But the star of the show for me is the McAslan & Partners Energy Centre - it oozes substance and sits comfortably at the core of the site.
ROUSHAM GARDENS, OXONThe exquisite gardens at Rousham, Oxfordshire, designed by William Kent in the 1700's, and which remainvirtually unchanged 300 years later, have become the inspiration for anew landscape project currentlybeing developed by the team atExterior Architecture. We particularly like the 'moments' throughout the landscape such as the thin meandering paths, thegroups of trees, and thepositioning of buildings and statues to intensify perspectives and composition: the meanderingrill is a particularly powerful yet simple example of this. Kent firmlybelieved that all of nature was a garden and aspired to balance the two in his designs, using the ha-hato great effect to achieve an apparantly seamless transitionfrom the garden to the surrounding
