If you could escape winter for a day, see some amazing bikes on display and meet the current World Champion Bike Builder, wouldn’t you? Visit Chicago’s McCormick place on February 6th, 2010 where Dave Cook the reigning, and first American ever, AMD World Champion Bike Builder will be displaying the “Rambler” and other of the creations from Cook Customs. If you can’t find your way to the show, then do what we did, contact the guys at Cook Customs in Milwaukee and arrange an appointment to visit their shop and check out what is going on first hand... For now read on as we share with you some information and insight from the guys at Cook Customs. Dave Cook started his working career as a mechanic and parlayed his knowledge of automobiles into a successful run at owning used car lots. During those years Dave built bikes as a sideline. It wasn’t until he decided that life was too short to do anything but what you love that he got out of the car business and focused on building bikes. It was about that same time that he made the shift to approaching bike building more as an art form than as a business. That shift in focus undoubtedly put him on the path that would lead him to his World Champion title.

It was about 6 years ago that the same shift in focus caused Dave and JP’s paths to cross. Dave met John “JP” Persitza at a local motorcycle event where they were both vendors. Financially surviving in the bike building business while approaching it as an art requires special circumstances and it wasn’t long before the guy’s recognized that an alliance would offer each of them more opportunity to do what they loved. Dave’s and JP’s newly formed alliance relocated Dave’s personal shop and equipment to a larger complex of buildings which house a number of JP’s other business divisions which he operates under the umbrella entity of the PCI Group. Each of these opertations focus on some aspect of custom design and fabrication. If you find yourself at the complex encompassing 1400-1420 E. Belleview Place in Milwaukee you’ll find much more than Dave’s shop. The property is home to shop space for design, fabrication and machining services ranging from signs and interior décor elements to the motorcycles and components offered by the Cook Customs division, as well as a studio setting for JP’s girlfriend, motorcycle industry photographer and writer, Colleen Swartz (and a very impressive sub-terrain party room).

During our conversation JP observed that around home town Milwaukee, Dave may be better known for his unique motorized couches. But there is so much more that comes out of the artistic complex at the end of Belleview Place, and Dave has the ring to prove it. Dave Cook continues to handsomely portray the public face and creative design concepts of Cook Customs while the full scope of services are provided by JP, Matt Drew, Warren Heir Jr. and Danny Carr. Not to mention a variety of outside resources when necessary.

Today’s motorcycle aftermarket has a lot of companies making “bolt on” parts. At Cook Customs “we are striving to go a step further and be a resource for those who are trying to create a bike for themselves that is truly unique” JP shared, and “we are offering made to order variations on Dave’s signature designs as well as custom fabrication for pretty much anything a customer requires”. He added “other than the 60’s-70’s style psychedelic paint you will see on some of Warren Jr’s vintage style chops we are, as a group, very much a “less is more” bunch of guys. We strive to recognize and pro-mote products and services which are commercially viable but we also take care to not violate our personal sensibilities in the work we do for others”.

With Dave’s record as the highest placing American in the World Championship three years running, and the 2009 World Champion Builder title secured, we had to ask; “What’s next?”

Both Dave and JP agreed that one of the biggest challenges in building a bike to com-pete at the Championship level is the amount of time required. Building the “Rambler” to standards which they felt would make Dave a strong contender in 2009 took a commitment of at least 90% of Dave’s working hours for a full year. Near the end of the build literally hundreds of additional man hours from Matt, JP and others for polishing, powder coating, plating, etc. were required to finish by the deadline. JP was quick with his response, “I just don’t think we can afford to pursue another win of the World Championship... not this year anyhow”. He went on to say how he felt the best use of the crew’s time this year would be to produce the lowest cost entry with the most style that Dave’s creativity could devise. That would be quite a statement; that a world class build need not be particularly expensive. Dave on the other hand responded with musings about what would be required to produce his own engine block from scratch.

So what else will Cook Customs Crew have in store for us this year? We can look forward to the production of Cook influenced versions of much more standard “customs”. Currently Dave is working on a one-of-a-kind Norton for a customer and though it is a true one-off build, he is tweaking it towards a practical set-up for reliable and more comfortable regular riding. The rest of the team is working on bikes that are much more representative of what a home builder would be producing, while incorporating Cook Custom parts as well as some key one-of-a-kind fabricated parts. Over the course of the next 6 months we’ll be introduced to a blend of what is recognizable as Cook Style, but at their foundation, relatively stock bikes.

So, what does all of that have to do with the AMD Championship in 2010? Well, what is going to come out of Dave’s head and the Cook Customs shop is, at this point, anybody’s guess.

If both Dave and JP get their way, just maybe we have a new variety of reasonably priced custom motorcycles to look forward to. Now certainly would be a good time for it. Roughly 3 million rear end collisions occur in the U.S. each year, injuring more than 1.5 million people while costing $15 billion in property damage. The National Transportation Safety Board has determined: “If following drivers had just 0.5 - 1.0 second of additional warning time, 60% - 90% of rear end collisions could be avoided.”(1) How many of us as riders have taken a deep breath when sitting at an intersection hoping that the car coming up behind us will slow in time? Or have a car riding your tail on a country road so close that your only safe alternative is to pull over and let them pass. There are many excuses: they didn’t see us, they couldn’t hear us, and of course they were distracted. Awareness and education will help but as riders we’re always on the lookout for options to make us safe. Loud pipes, loud colors are a couple of examples. But this product offers another alternative to get and keep their attention while they’re behind you. Whenever you’re braking or downshifting StrobeWise™ will alert anyone behind you to be aware. StrobeWise™ provides up to 10 seconds of additional warning time for following drivers and can be installed on any make or model motorcycle or vehicle with a speed sensor. During the time while the vehicle is decelerating but not braking, StrobeWise™ flashes to following drivers with a rear mounted supplemental light. Rate of flash varies relative to the degree of deceleration and flashes continuously while the vehicle is stopped. Microprocessor accurately measures the vehicle’s speed at nearly 1,000 times/sec. and is the only collision warning system to use the vehicle’s speed sensor data. StrobeWise™ retrofits on nearly all vehicles later than 1993 and is available in 4 light models. Some of the features include:

We tested the product from installation to action with the help of a local dealer for the installation and tech review. Gary Schmidt, the President and CEO for TransSystems, LLC (the exclusive licensor for StroveWise) was confident I could install the strobe myself. Although a slave of many skills, I do not master the electrical system on my bike, home, car or computer. But I wanted to test his theory that I could do the install myself, so I asked a local dealer to help with the installation and review and they accepted! Shawn rode my Heritage Softail into the Nielsen Enterprise service bay in Lake Villa one rainy afternoon for its first of many roles as guinea pig. Ron Gerstenberger, Nielsen’s Service Manager and technician Tim Phillips fabricated a bracket and made the rest of the install seem easy. After the installation I met with them and was pleased to hear Tim say “the only challenge in the installation was deciding where to mount the strobe”. The wiring harness and instructions made the StrobeWise™ an easy installation to the bikes electrical system and speed sensor. And they were impressed that the product had been installed in fleet vehicles for years. So at the end of the day the strobe was mounted with a bracket under the luggage rack above the license plate as seen in the picture. Driving home behind me in the truck, Shawn said the light was very noticeable and a bit annoying. (Huh...) Once the rear bag was re-attached however, the fringe from the duffle shadowed the light and when riding his bike behind me he said it did not blind or offend and it worked flawlessly.

While stopped at intersections I’ve seen drivers and passengers in vehicles behind me comment to each other and point out the strobe. It’s obvious that they see me and believe me I don’t draw that much attention to my back-end without a strobe… Vehicles moved around me in traffic without delay, as the yellow flash of the strobe communicates caution to drivers behind me. I’m a confident rider to begin with but it’s reassuring to see vehicles back off when I downshift or let off the throttle in traffic. The strobe senses the speed adjustment and notifies the vehicles behind me that I am no

longer accelerating. The microprocessors in the unit also sense the light and adjust the strobe’s brightness to effectively signal deceleration regardless of the weather conditions or the light of day. We should mention that the brightness and sensitivity levels are adjustable by authorized dealers, making this an effective and adjustable. It is my opinion this product will save lives. I’ve climbed mountains, ridden dragons, skyways, and run through rain storms including the entire state of Ohio in a blazing rain carrying a passenger on the way to Pennsylvania. I’ve had cars and trucks run into my lane. I’ve had cars pull out in front of me. I’ve had a deer come out on me at night. I have had deer come out of a field of corn in front of me. And what I have come to expect is the unex-pected. I have ridden some of the most beautiful roads and seen some of the most beautiful country side I have ever seen and loved every minute of it, with intense passion. Why? It is because I have honed and importantly continue honing my riding skills. And again, the best way to do this is to take a riding course.

Over the next few issues we are going to explore in greater detail these skills: braking, steering, low speed maneuvering

and the use of clutch-throttle-rear brake, riding on different surfaces and different weather conditions.

Until then, only you can determine how good you want to be.

If you did not ride to the BIG Border Rally because it was too cold, you missed a great time. It was an unusually cold October weekend, however living in the mid-west unusual weather tends to be normal.

If you are serious about riding your motorcycle in our area you will have to deal with cold weather. Recently I participated in a Patriot Guard Riders mission for a fallen Army Soldier. When I left my house it was 25 degrees and I had to ride 65 miles to get to the airport where the escort was to start. I made it there just fine because I used the right layers of clothing and technology to keep warm. I use heavy weight polypropylene long under-wear as my first layer. If you wear a cotton base layer, and you sweat, you will not keep warm because moist cotton conducts your body heat away from you. Synthetic long underwear keeps away the moisture and retains your warmth. In my boots I use the toe warmers you can buy at most stores. For the next layer I wear a pair of jeans, a turtleneck shirt, sweatshirt and an electric vest before the leather goes on. I put on my leather chaps and jacket as my final layer. I wear electric gloves and vest that allows me to keep warm for longer rides without the bulk of wearing many layers. If you do not have electric gloves I suggest a pair of glove liners to wear along with your heavy gloves.

Wearing a full-face helmet prevents body heat from escaping from the top of your head and a neck gaiter to keep the cold wind off your neck. If you wear a half-helmet, wear a facemask to protect your skin. I see riders all the time riding in cold

weather with nothing on their heads, face or ears and I get cold just looking at them! There is expensive riding clothing made to protect you and keep you warm but wearing your “normal” clothing and investing in glove liners, synthetic long under-wear, or electric clothing is a more practical approach to staying warm. That day I rode with Patriot Guard Riders the tempera-ture never went above 45 degrees and I rode 280 comfortable miles. Wearing the right riding clothing will not only protect you but it will also keep you warm! Ride Safe and Warm!

This issue introduces our first of many issues to feature products new in our area and Manufactured here in our area.

RIVCO, a Burlington WI-based motorcycle accessory manufacturer that has been the industry’s leading original air horn manufacturer for over 17 years. It proudly claims that their motorcycle air horns give a guaranteed and test-standardized warning blast of 128 decibels, and offer many model specific air horns, as well as multi-application horn sets. The horns replace the stock horn, (with the compressor often mounted under the seat, behind a right side cover or on a frame down tube - location varying by brand and model), utilize the stock horn button and are easily installed in 20-30 minutes. The trumpets, mounts and brackets are finished in long-lasting triple plated chrome or satin black powder-coat and RIVCO horns are also completely waterproof.

Air horns draw more power, so the air horn’s compressor draws more power – approximately 8 amps. This requires the use of a relay, heavier gauge wire and a fuse to safeguard the horn button contacts, as well as provide enough amperage to run the compressor at full speed. The air compressor creates instant air pressure to the horns, which eliminates the need for a storage tank similar to those used on semi-trailer trucks and trains. Although the compressor pressure is low it delivers a large volume of air. This low-pressure/high volume air supply causes the diaphragm inside the horn to vibrate at a high rate of speed, and together the horn set produces a 128-decibel warn-ing blast- approximately 4 times louder than most electric motorcycle horns, which usually rate at 87 decibels.

RIVCO’s bolt-on and plug-in air horn sets require about 30 minutes to install. Kits include two horns, protective dust/dirt/road grime and bug covers (which mount to the front of the trumpets,) compressor, hoses, a switch-and-wiring protective 30 amp relay, fuse, simple wiring, all necessary hardware, and detailed instructions. All components come with a two year unlimited warranty. A chrome compressor cover is also available.

Once again we’ve come upon the time of the year that makes us wince to think of throwing a leg over our favorite ride without heated riding gear. But I’ve never owned any of those, so I can just count on my friends that use them that they’re good. But we’re getting older! Growing up in the Midwest makes us strong and once you’re used to the cutting wind it doesn’t feel as that cold as the first couple of times it frigidly kissed your cheeks. I’ve ridden through many days that caught me off guard with the weather catch-ing you unprepared for what it has to offer.

That also brings to mind the friends that are no longer working at the once familiar dealerships around the corner from many of our homes, and being able to quickly pick up a part I may have been missing to finish a project I was working on, or just to stop by and hang out on a sunny Saturday, mid-ride. Not being prepared for all this economic fallout, this has been a tough year for a great many of us, with the economy stuttering to make any progress, jobs and work hours either non-existent or we’re managing the work load of three individuals. Perhaps I may be preaching to the choir, but I can’t help but feel that it’s important to look more to those local shops and support their effort to staying in business and be there for the reasons I mentioned above. It’s difficult not to look to the internet and the competitive pricing they offer and benefit from ordering some much needed parts at times when the local shop has already closed.

When all is said and done, that local shop offers us a lot more in value and perspec-tive, then any internet site can ever offer. Those folks are our neighbors; they shop in the same stores as us and contribute to our local economy and the community in whole. Occasionally you may pay a higher price in the local shop, but the opportunity to have them show you how to install what you purchased and offer you one on one advise is priceless compared to some technician over the customer service line ringing somewhere in Asia, with an accent you can’t comprehend. That shop will be difficult to replace once it’s gone, and gone it may be following this winter.

Like many of you, I watched the video Eric Buell recorded after announcing that Harley Davidson had no choice but to pull the plug on their extended union of mutual engineering and manufacturing commitment. Buell motorcycles might not have been everyone’s cup of tea, but Eric was about tenacity and full of the “can do” spirit that is about as American as one person could ever be. It was awful to watch his reaction and understand that his company, that is as much a part of his spirit as is his soul was dying right before you and there was nothing you could do but feel for his loss. Particularly after they won the AMA SuperSport championship in road racing this fall, just makes it all the more harder to fathom.

There are those that will chime in, “There will be others to take the place of those

that have left the industry or closed shop.” Perhaps there will, but will they be as welcome as the folks that have their stores open now to offer us service and be our friend in time of need? I may be a pessimist, but I would rather keep the folks that are around now, open and their shops humming away, as busy as we can make them. This brings me to the focus of this month’s diatribe. We’ve just passed another holiday season; it’s time to share what little you may have made this year, with the ones you love.

Take a ride to your local dealership or service shop. Order or purchase something for yourself, your significant other or your children. It doesn’t have to be expensive, every little bit counts to the bottom line. This will be something that will make every-one happy. Especially that person behind the counter doing as much as they can to provide you with the best service possible, keeping them employed, and helping that shop stay open to service you for many years to come. This is important because it will mutually benefit you, that store, the economy and our future as riders.

Ducati Riders of Illinois (DRILL), the club I have the privilege to be a member of, will once again be represented at the International Motorcycle Show at the Doanld E. Stevens Convention Center in Rosemont Illinois, the weekend of February 19th - 21st 2009. We will be at the Club Connection booth immediately after you enter the exposition center. We will also have a dedicated club booth elsewhere in the show. One of our goals for this years’ show is to have multiple generations of Ducati road and race bikes on display for everyone to admire this fantastic Italian breed.
