Scouting the Cathedral City Classic Field

2010 Team Game Highs

UC Davis (6-3) The Aggies won three of their first four games at the Sportco Kick-Off to start the season and also pieced together a three-game win streak by sweeping a doubleheader with Sacramento State and defeating Portland State. The win streak was interrupted by an 8-0 loss in six innings to UCLA on Saturday at the Winsberg Memorial Tournament in Los Angeles. Sarah Axelson has a team-high 11 hits in 24 at-bats for a .458 batting average to go with a team-high seven RBI. Power is not a UCD strength as Rachel Miller hit the Aggies’ only home run this season. Alex Holmes is 4-1 on the mound with a 2.97 ERA.

Long Beach State (4-5) After losing their first two games of the season at the Sportco Kick-Off, the 49ers reeled off three consecutive victories with wins over Kent State, Cal State Bakersfield and Boise State. LBSU went 2-3 at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic last weekend. Nalani St. Germain is hitting .385 with a team-high five home runs, 11 RBI, 12 runs scored and a 1.000 slugging percentage. As a team, LBSU is hitting .267 while its opponents are hitting .331. Starting pitcher Taylor Petty is 2-3 in 2010 with a 2.86 ERA.

Baylor (6-4) The Lady Bears are receiving votes in both of the latest national polls. BU started its season with a 2-3 showing at the Marriott Houston Hobby Classic, suffering losses to Louisville (twice) and Ohio State. BU bounced back nicely with a 4-1 mark at its home tournament, the QTI Getterman Classic, with its only loss coming in a 3-2 decision to UTEP. Jordan Vannatta is hitting .407 this season with a team-high three home runs and 11 RBI. Courtney Repka is 4-1 on the mound with a 1.04 ERA.

No. 19/21 Fresno State (7-1) The Bulldogs won their first six games this season, sweeping a doubleheader against Santa Clara and winning all four games at their Fresno State Kick-Off before being blanked by Illinois 5-0 Saturday at the Stanford/Nike Invitational. Their final two games against Sacramento State and Stanford at the same event were rained out. Michelle Moses is hitting .429, which places second on the team, and is also tied for the team lead with nine hits and six RBI. Seven different Bulldogs have hit home runs this season. FSU is hitting .335 this season, compared to just a .170 average for its opponents. Morgan Melloh is 4-1 on the mound with a 0.73 ERA in five appearances.

Oregon (8-4) The Ducks are in search of their first three-game win streak of the season. UO has won back-to-back games four times this season but have yet to win a third straight. A pair of Duck hitters own batting averages over .500, led by Blair Williamson who is hitting at a .563 clip with nine hits in 16 at-bats with five RBI. Sam Pappas is hitting .513 with a team-high 20 hits, including six home runs, with 15 RBI. Starting pitchers Brittany Rumfelt and Jessica Moore have combined for a 6-1 record early this season. Rumfelt is 3-0 with a miniscule 0.47 ERA in 15 innings of work. Moore has carried the lion’s share of innings thus far, going 38.0 innings in seven appearances, with a 1.47 ERA. Moore and Sam Skillingstad have two complete games each in 2010.

Amy HogueHead Coach • Third Season

After leading the University of Utah softball team to new heights as a player, Amy Hogue now leads the Utes in her third season as head coach. The fifth coach in program history, Hogue compiled a 57-61 record in her first two seasons at Utah and sports a 254-143 after seven seasons as a head coach during her career. Under Hogue’s guidance, Diana Phillips earned an NFCA First-Team All-Region award in 2008 and four different Utes have been name to the All-Mountain West Conference teams. Hogue played for the Utes from 1991-94 and earned second team All-America honors as a senior. In garnering All-America accolades, she hit .455, had 101 hits, 222 at bats and 55 runs scored. All of those numbers still stand as the school’s top marks for a single season. Hogue also holds season records for triples (7) and runs scored (55). She led both the 1991 and 1994 squads to the College World Series. Hogue built and mentored Salt Lake Community College’s softball team from 1999-2004, instantly creating a successful program. She went 197-82 (.706) in her time with the Bruins. The pinnacle of her tenure with the Bruins came in 2004. SLCC was the regional champion that season and placed sixth at the NJCAA Division I National Tournament. In 2000, the Bruins’ inaugural campaign, they won the Scenic West Athletic Conference title and repeated as champions again in 2003. At SLCC, Hogue coached 36 all-region players (22 first-teamers, 14 second-team nods), and coached nine All-America standouts. In addition to the players’ success, Hogue was named the SWAC Coach of the Year for her efforts in 2003.

With the Bruins, Hogue coached 36 all-region players (22 first-teamers, 14 second-team nods), and coached nine All-America standouts.

In addition to the players’ success, Hogue was named the SWAC Coach of the Year for her efforts in 2003.Prior to moving to SLCC, Hogue was an assistant coach at Utah from 1996-99 where she was involved in all facets of running the program.

Hogue got her start in coaching as Utah’s graduate assistant coach from 1994-95. From there she went to Alta High School as an assistant coach from 1994-96.

Since 1995, Hogue has coached an accelerated travel team. Currently called The Sting, she has guided her club squad to a .725 winning percentage. In the last two seasons, The Sting has racked up 137 wins.

Her playing career at Utah was equally as impressive. As a player, she helped the Utes win two conference titles, two conference tournaments and two regional titles in making two Women’s College World Series appearances. She captained the 1994 squad that tallied a school-record 51 wins.

In addition to the team’s success, Hogue was Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year, first team all-region and second team All-America in 1994. She was a three-time All-WAC player and was the team MVP in 1994.

Hogue’s name appears throughout the record book at Utah. In Utah’s career record book, she still ranks third in at bats (703) and stolen bases (72), fourth in hits (239), and fifth in both hitting (.340) and runs (125).

Her 101 hits in a season was one of the longest-standing marks in the NCAA, and she still holds the NCAA record for at bats in a game (14).

The Utah standout briefly played professional softball. After college, she toured with the WPF Storm and was later drafted and signed to play with Durham Dragons.

Hogue graduated from Utah in 1994 with a sociology degree and earned a Masters from Utah in social work in 1996.
