Portland owns a 23-17 goals advantage as Ryan Luke and Jarad van Schaik pace the Pilots with six goals apiece. Austin Guerrero has started all 14 matches with four shutouts and a 1.13 GAA. Despite an 8-2-4 slate on the season, the Pilots have not generated much national poll acceptance, cracking just the College Soccer News at No. 30. GONZAGA GAZING: After defeating San Francisco at home for its first West Coast Conference win of the season, Gonzaga has dropped back-to-back matches against Saint Mary’s (1-0) and Portland (2-1). The Bulldogs have dropped six of their last seven and have been out-scored 24-12 overall and 12-6 in WCC contests. Stefan Eysteinsson owns the team lead with three goals apiece, while Philippe Garre has a team-high four assists. KARL KRAFT CONNECTS: Freshman midfielder Karl Kraft scored his first career goal for San Francisco last Friday against ancient Bay Area rival Santa Clara (10/22). UP NEXT FOR THE DONS: San Francisco travels across the Bay Bridge to tackle longtime Bay Area rival Saint Mary’s in midweek action Wednesday, November 3 in Moraga. The Dons look to avenge a 1-0 double overtime loss at Negoesco Stadium to the Gaels on October 6. VISSER’S CHAMPIONSHIP CREDENTIALS: A three-time WCC Coach of the Year (2004-05, 2008), Visser owns deep ties to the soccer program at the University of San Francisco. A defender on two USF NCAA Championship teams (1978, 1980), Visser spent 19 seasons as an assistant coach under soccer legend Steve Negoesco before taking the reigns as head coach for the 2001 campaign. Along the way, Visser also started the women’s soccer program on the Hilltop in 1985 and served as head coach for six years. Visser is active in the USA National Team program and served as the top assistant for the U-20 team that fi nished 13th in the 2001 Youth World Cup in Argentina. Visser recorded his 50th career victory at Portland (11/10/05) and owns an overall mark of 88-85-13. Former Dons standout Josh McKay is in his eighth season as top assistant coach and fourth as an associate head coach, while Tyler Gottschalk is in his seventh campaign as an assistant. Dan Chamberlain is the newest addition to the staff, coming to the Hilltop after a serving as an assistant at Stanford last season.

USF ONCE AGAIN FEATURES THE UNITED NATIONS LINEUP: USF men’s soccer boasts a long and distinguished history of drawing outstanding players from throughout the world and the 2010 squad is no exception. This year’s roster features players from fi ve countries and four continents. The country roll call features 34 players from the United States, three Dons from Norway, and one each from Colombia, Japan and Sweden.

PLENTY OF BONUS SOCCER: Sometimes 90 minutes is not enough action for USF soccer and since the start of the 2004 season it has competed in 34 overtime matches. So far in 2010, San Francisco owns a 1-2-2 slate in matches going beyond regulation, highlighted by a thrilling 2-1 double-overtime triumph against Cal State Northridge (9/24/10) and a 2-2 deadlock at Santa Clara (10/8/10). The Dons played a remarkable seven matches that reached double overtime in 2005 and registered a 2-1-4 overall record, 1-1-3 during West Coast Conference play. Since the start of 2004, USF owns a 10-11-13 slate during “bonus soccer” matches.

WINNING THE CLOSE ONES: Since the start of the 2003 season San Francisco has played in 85 matches (10.8 per year) decided by one goal and posted a 4-6 record in 2009. USF played a whopping 12 contests decided by one goal in 2008 and recorded a 5-7 slate, but won fi ve of its last eight to end the season. The Dons played 13 matches in 2006 decided by one goal, registering an 8-5 record in those contests. Dating back to October of the 2003 campaign, USF owns a 43-47 ledger in one goal matches.

ROAD WARRIORS: San Francisco has proven tough on the road and since the start of the 2005 season owns a 24-27-3 record in true away matches, while posting a 17-19-4 slate in West Coast Conference road tilts since the start of the 2004 campaign. The Dons are 3-2-3 at neutral sites during the same span. USF posted a sparkling 4-1-1 WCC road record in 2008.

CORTEZ HONORED: Senior midfi elder Victor Cortez capped a sensational match at Santa Clara with selection to the College Soccer News Team of the Week for October 13. A four-year starter for the Dons, Cortez picked an excellent time for his fi rst career multi-goal match when he scored twice in a thrilling 2-2 deadlock at ancient West Coast Conference rival Santa Clara. Trailing 2-0, Cortez scored on a scramble in the box and then with just :05 remaining in regulation, rocketed a 40-yard blast to the upper v for the dramatic equalizer.

LONG STRANGE TRIP: With a 2-2 deadlock at Santa Clara October 8, USF completed a grueling stretch of four matches in eight days. Further validating Murphy’s Law, the Dons played back-to-back double overtime contests - a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to Saint Mary’s (10/6) before recovering at Santa Clara.

1980 NCAA CHAMPION DONS 30TH ANNIVERSARY: USF remembers the 1980 NCAA Championship squad on the 30th anniversary of the Dons bringing another title to the Hilltop. San Francisco posted an unblemished 23-0-2 record, capped by a thrilling 4-3 overtime triumph against Indiana in the fi nals. A truly dominant offensive force, the Dons out-scored opponents 86-20 on the year with no fewer than four players reaching double-digit goal tallies - led by 16 apiece from Roar Anderson and Luis Felipe Magalhaes. The Dons 1980 NCAA Championship team will be honored in a pre-match ceremony before USF’s showdown against ancient Bay Area rival Santa Clara Friday, October 22 at Negoesco Stadium as part of the USF Fall Fest Weekend.

IT WAS 30 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK: San Francisco continued its tear, improving to 16-0-2 after blanking UC Santa Barbara 4-0 in a home decision before winning at Bay Area rival San Jose State. The Dons seized a 3-1 overtime triumph in historic Spartan Stadium.

NEW PITCH FOR NEGOESCO STADIUM: San Francisco soccer will play on a newly installed ProTurf surface during the 2010 season. Look at the photo gallery here: http://www.usfdons.com/sports/m-soccer/2010-11/photos/10NegoescoFieldTurfGallery
