THE CAMPUS...The University of San Diego is an independent Catho-lic institution of higher education. Founded in 1949, USD is located on 180 acres overlooking Mission Bay, San Diego Harbor and the Pacific Ocean. The campus is named Alcalá Park and is located just 10 minutes from downtown San Diego. The campus was named after a Spanish village near Madrid - Alcala de Hena-res. Founded by the Greeks as Complutum, the village was later renamed Al Kala (the Castle) by the Moslems. Christians recaptured the village centuries later and founded a university whose buildings became the inspiration for USD’s architectural style.

Under the leadership of Mother Rosalie Hill of the So-ciety of the Sacred Heart and Bishop Charles Francis Buddy of the Diocese of San Diego, the University of San Diego began as separate colleges for men and women. The first classes met in 1952; the School of Law opened its doors in 1954. By the late 1960’s it became clear that both colleges would benefit from combining academic resources, and in 1972 the University of San Diego became a single coeducational Catholic university.

Now governed by a board of trustees independent from the founding organizations, USD is a Ro-man Catholic institution that welcomes students, faculty and staff of diverse religions, traditions and remains dedicated to the values originally articulated by Mother Hill and Bishop Buddy. Students choose from more than 60 undergraduate and graduate degree programs in academic divisions in-cluding the College of Arts and Sciences and the schools of Business Administration, Leadership and Education Sciences, Law and Nursing and Health Science.

THE ACADEMICS...

USD enrolls more than 7,800 students who have a choice of more than 60 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Admission to USD, which consistently ranks among the top schools in the na-tion, is highly selective. USD received more than 11,000 applications for approximately 1,100 undergraduate openings in fall of 2009. The class of 2013 entered with a GPA of 3.84 and an average SAT score

of 1207.In late 2009, U.S. News & World Report named the university one of the top 110 universities in the nation. USD has earned recognition in such publications as the 2006 edition of The Princeton Review annual college guide as being one of the best colleges in the United States. The Princeton Review recently included USD as one of the nation’s most socially conscious institutions in its book, Colleges with a Conscience: 81 Great Schools with Outstanding Community Involvement. USD in 2003, joined the elite company of Phi Beta Kappa, the nations oldest honor society. Nationwide, only about 10 percent of all colleges and universities have Phi Beta Kappa chapters. USD was granted membership to the Mortar Board National Honor Society in 2000.

STUDENT LIFE...

Student life at the University of San Diego is coordinated through Associated Students, the student-composed governing body of the university. This group of students creates most of the events on campus including dances, barbecues, and special guest speakers, such as Saturday Night Live comedian Horatio Sanz. Off-campus excursions have also been sponsored by AS, such as trips to see the Harlem Globetrot-ters perform at the San Diego Sports Arena and bus trips to Disneyland and the Getty Center in Los Angeles.

Through the Office of University Ministry, the strong Catholic tradition of USD is manifested through the student body. UM provides the campus with opportunities to attend and participate in weekly Mass and offers retreats throughout the semester. Service projects such as Tijuana Spring Breakthrough, a house building project in Tijuana and Baja California, give students the chance to get involved in providing assistance to those less fortunate. UM also sponsors outreach programs, both on campus and in the local Linda Vista community, including tutoring and mentoring.

Campus Recreation offers students a way to destress through fitness classes, such as yoga, kickboxing, and aerobics, and through extracurricular classes, including ballroom dancing and massage. Classes in sailing, surf-ing and scuba diving allow students to get outside in the beautiful San Diego weather and learn new activities. The intramural program is an integral part of student life on campus with over two-thirds of the USD community partaking in intramural sports. Sports range from the widely known flag football, basketball, and volleyball to the lesser-known, yet still widely popular, ultimate frisbee and dodgeball.

There are more than 65 student organizations on campus, in-cluding fraternities, sororities and academic clubs, that are open to the entire USD student body.

University of San Diego student-athletes receive elite coaching from their strength and conditioning staff in one of the premier weight rooms on the West Coast. With 5,000 square feet of floor space (plus an additional 1,600 square feet of turf ), 16 all inclusive lifting stations and approximately 20,000 pounds of free weights, multiple teams can be simultaneously coached in a comprehensive strength and conditioning development program. Medicine balls, dumbbells, gymnastics rings and various pull-up stations are used to enhance the

training provided for all 16 of USD’s varsity sports. The USD strength staff advocates the use of ground based, multi-joint, explosive free weight exercises in the training of student-athletes. USD teams are taught the clean and jerk, snatch, squats, dead lift and the various barbell and dumbbell variations. By using the exercises, in combination with intense effort, we believe USD student-athletes will be well prepared to meet e v e r y p h y s i c a l challenge put to them in competition.

Academic Support & Student-Athlete Services

USD SPORTS PERFORMANCE

“The USD academic support program provides our student-athletes the re-sources necessary to successfully balance a challenging academic and athletic schedule. Student-athletes have the op-portunity to utilize tutors, advising, a quiet environment to study and a computer lab. Academic support offers guidance throughout the student-athlete’s aca-demic experience at USD- from freshman orientation to graduation and career preparation.” Head Coach Melissa McElvain

SARABETH POLLOCKPollock begins her sixth year as the Coordinator of Athletic Academic Support for the University of San Diego. She has worked as a tutor in the Athletic Department since the fall of 2001. She serves as the academic advisor for Softball, Volleyball, Swimming and Diving, Men’s and Women’s Soccer, Men’s Tennis, Men’s and Women’s Cross Country/Track, Men’s and Women’s Rowing, and Golf. Her responsibilities include the supervision of the Study Hall and the administration of the tutoring and mentoring programs. Science and History. She speaks Spanish and French fluently. A 5th generation San Diegan, she resides in Point Loma with her family. Sarabeth will start working on her Master’s degree in History in the coming academic year.

ACADEMIC SUPPORT CENTER...The USD Athletic Academic Support Program is designed to promote

the academic development of student-athletes. The primary objective is to offer the necessary resources for the academic success of student-ath-letes as they work to earn their degree. Academic Support Services are designed to enhance the student-athlete’s overall collegiate experience and encourage development and attainment of academic and career goals.

All USD student-athletes have access to advising, tutoring and mentor-ing services. The mentoring program, Torero Blue and MenTorero, were redeveloped in 2005 and team a graduate student in the counseling pro-gram with an athlete who would like to enhance study skills, learn about campus resources, receive guidance on goal development and attain-ment, and benefit from guided group study. Student-athletes also have access to a quiet area where they can study or work in the computer center. In addition, student-athletes are encouraged to utilize the cam-pus learning centers including the Writing, Math and Logic Centers as well as to take advantage of the resources available to them in the Career Center, Counseling Center and Computer Labs.

The department of sports medicine operates under the supervision of the University of San Diego’s desig-nated team physician, Paul C. Mur-phy MD, the associate director of athletics for sports medicine, Carolyn Greer, associate athletic trainers, and assistant athletic trainers. The sports medicine facility is located in the Jenny Craig Pavilion and is for the exclusive use of the University of San Diego student-athletes. This 2,400 square foot facility has defined tap-ing, rehabilitation, and hydrotherapy areas. In addition, there are a private treatment/exam room, offices and storage. The entire athletic training staff takes great pride in the services rendered to over 400 student athletes through this facility. The USD ath-letic training room is clearly the top sports medicine venue in the West Coast Conference.

San Diego is truly “America’s Finest City.” A modern metropolis (second largest in California) and a popular year-round resort, San Diego spreads from the coast to the desert, including cliffs, mesas, hills, canyons and val-leys. San Diego also surrounds one of California’s greatest natural harbors which has been a dominant factor in determining the city’s history, economy and development. Meteorologists claim San Diego as the country’s only area with perfect climate. This ideal year-round envi-ronment posts an average daytime temperature of 70 degrees, with an annual rainfall average of less than 10 inches. Most days are sunny, with humidity generally low, even in the summer. The climate, attractive setting and recreational facilities make San Diego “America’s Finest City.” The city has mostly avoided the evils of urban sprawl, which has allowed its downtown to remain vibrant, especially

the Gaslamp Quarter. San Diego is also home to the world-famous San Diego Zoo as well as Sea World. The city is great for families, but for those without kids, there is a lot to do as well. San Diego is home to a number of mili-tary bases, primarily due to its location. In 1941, after the Pearl Harbor attacks, the U.S. established the headquarters of the Pacific Fleet in San Diego, and the city is now home to the largest air naval station on the west coast. Unlike many cities, San Diego’s airport is right next to downtown, increasing its convenience even more. It is hard to believe that San Diego is the nation’s sixth-largest city, it just retains a small town feel. According to Sports Illustrated, “For sheer numbers of participants, diversity of pursuits of involvement, San Diego must rank as the sports fitness capital of the U.S.” Sports are a major feature of the San Diego lifestyle. One can sail, swim, surf, scuba dive, snorkel, wind-surf on 70 miles of public beach or golf at any of the over

80 golf courses throughout the county. Balboa Park, a 1,158-acre recreation and cultural center, offers 25 tennis courts, two gymnasiums, two municipal golf courses, and one of the nation’s finest zoos. Mis-sion Bay Park is a 4,600-acre playground for jogging, fishing, bicycling, tennis, golf, jet skiing and kite flying. As well as participating in recreational activities, San Diego supports their profes-sional teams -- the NFL Chargers play at Qualcomm Stadium, and the San Diego Padres play at Petco Park. During college football bowl week, San Diego annually hosts the Pacific Life Holiday Bowl in late December. During 1998, Qualcomm Stadium hosted the Super Bowl game between Denver and Green Bay; followed by the World Series between the San Diego Padres and the New York Yankees. The Super Bowl returned to San Diego in 2003. Whatever sporting activity there is, it’s here in San Diego -- the sports capital of the U.S.!

Dr. Mary E. LyonsPresident

The University of San Diego is very proud of the student-athletes that represent our institution on 17 men's and women's NCAA Division-I athletic teams. These are proud and serious competitors, honored to represent the University. The dedication you witness on the playing fields, on the court, on the course, or in the water is greatly matched in the classrooms, the laboratories, on stage, or in the community. Last year thirty-nine percent of our student-athletes carried a grade-point average above 3.2, and 11 of our teams had a cumulative grade-point average above 3.0.

Athletics is vital to the University of San Diego, a way students, faculty, staff and alumni come together as one community. I am both a university president and a Torero fan; I look forward to sharing the excitement of Torero athletics with our many fans.

He came back to USD from the San Diego International Sports Council where he held the position of President.

With the San Diego International Sports Council, Snyder's primary re-sponsibility was to promote San Diego/Tijuana as the preferred region for sporting events and activities that benefit the community both economi-cally and socially. Accomplishments of the Sports Council bid efforts dur-ing Snyder's tenure included securing San Diego the 1997 and 1998 ESPN Summer X Games, the Suzuki Rock & Roll Marathon, the 1999 Major League Soccer All-Star Game, the Bank of America/U.S. Olympic Cup, NCAA Division I Men's Basketball First & Second Round (2001) contests, the NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championships (2001) and Super Bowl XXXVII.

At USD he was responsible for establishing the Torero Athletic Association, fund-raising efforts for athletics, managing athletic special events and generating corporate sponsorship of athletics.

At USD he oversees an athletic department with seventeen NCAA Division I intercollegiate teams and over 400 student-athletes. He is responsible for all admin-istrative, management and supervisory aspects of the Department of Athletics. Additionally, he oversees the strategic long-range planning and monitoring of budgets, personnel, programs, facilities, fundraising, promotions and marketing, and public relations for an NCAA Division I program consisting of eight sports for men and nine sports for women. He serves on the NCAA Division I Football Rules Committee and as the Corpo-rate Co-Chair of the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes.

This past season saw the USD athletics program win its second consecutive WCC Commissioner's Cup. The conference trophy goes to the school with the top performing athletics program in the eight-team West Coast Conference. Four Torero teams advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2008-09, while a record six teams made it in 2007-08.

Snyder played football at San Diego State Univer-sity. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Marketing from San Diego State University and has studied in the Master's Leadership Program at the University of San Diego.

Snyder, who has been a San Diego resident for 27 years, has a very athletic family. His wife, Sue, was a former standout member of the United States women's national volleyball team who played at San Diego State and also coached the Aztecs and University of San Diego's women's volleyball teams. In addition, Snyder's father, Lester, held the position as President of the United States Tennis Association.

The University of San Diego softball team is enter-ing a new era in the Pacific Coast Softball Confer-ence. In the 2010 season there are two divisions of six teams, with the winner of each division facing off in a playoff series for the automatic bid to the post season. The Toreros had a solid 2009 campaign with records broken and players highlighted for their strong performance. Despite graduating key players last season, Head Coach Melissa McElvain and her staff have been hard at work signing some solid recruits to the Torero roster.

In 2009, the Toreros faced a strong non-conference schedule including two ranked teams. They faced six teams during the season that fought in the early rounds of the post season (Long Beach State, San Di-ego State, Missouri, UCLA, Miami-Ohio, and Portland State), with Missouri advancing to the Women’s Col-lege World Series. San Diego finished in third place in the PCSC, their best finish in program history. The team also reached another milestone earning 11 PCSC victories.

USD had four players earn PCSC Honors for their play on the field and nine athletes earn Commission-er’s Honors for their work in the classroom. Lindsey Fleet was named to the PCSC All-Conference Second Team, earned Commissioner’s Honors, and team Best Offensive Player award. Jennifer Ellenbeck earned PCSC Second Team All-Conference honors, was named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll, and selected by the team as the Most Valuable Player and given the Community Service Award. was the third player to be named to the PCSC Second Team All-Conference as well as being named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll for academic excellence. Cathy Wineinger earned PCSC Honorable Mention and PCSC Commissioner’s Honors as well as being named the team Rookie of the Year. Other athletes to earn Commissioner’s Honor Roll include: Carey Casciola, Taryn Keenan, Alyssa Luna, Alyssa Schott, and Kaslin Tucker. Celeste Soto was named the team Best Defen-sive Player and the Coaches Award for attitude, effort, and heart was given to Taylor Lawrence.

The Toreros lost seniors Kaslin Tucker, Lindsey Fleet, and Katie Jo Nelson, all of whom were starters for the 2009 Torero team. Coach McElvain, in her 9th season, will look to reach the 150-win milestone this season. The coaching staff brought in eight freshmen this year. The new faces include Mickell Escobar, Chelsea Kamai, Danielle Richardson, Kimberlee Shimizu, Allison Stal-berger, Lauren Tomey, Chelsea Velovich, and Kierstie Svatos. These players will join the roster that includes six seniors, three juniors and three sophomores to give them a total of 20 players.

The Toreros begin the 2010 campaign at home hosting Boise State and UC Riverside on February 13th. They will travel up to UC Riverside the next day to wrap up the two-day series facing the Broncos and the Highlanders again. The team will then head to the UNLV Tournament where they will play five games from February 19-21. They will take on opponents BYU, UNLV, Boise St., Hawaii and Oregon.

The Toreros will spend the next two weeks preparing for the San Diego Classic I. Once again it will be five games for the To-reros in the three days starting on March 5th. The Toreros will play Buffalo, Wisconsin, Oregon, Cal Poly and Long Beach State.

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Pacific Coast Soft-ball Conference has extended invitations for conference membership to six schools: Cali-fornia State University Bakersfield, Idaho State University, University of Northern Colorado, Seattle University, Utah Valley University and Weber State University, PCSC Commissioner Wendy Guthrie announced in Fall of 2008.

“Really the most positive thing it does for us is it protects our conference,” commented head coach Melissa McElvain. “It adds a higher level of competition for us and we know that we’re protected long term as a very strong competitive conference in dif-ferent regions.”

Starting with the 2010 season, the PCSC will split into two divisions, the Coastal and Mountain. The division winners will meet in a best-of-three championship series to determine the conference’s automatic NCAA Tournament berth.

“We are delighted to welcome California State University, Bakersfield, Idaho State University, University of Northern Colorado, Seattle University, Utah Valley University, and Weber State University as members of the Pacific Coast Softball Conference,” Guthrie said. “The addition of a conference champion-ship series will enhance the student-athlete experience and heighten the visibility of the league.”

TOREROS DEFINED...The University of San Diego, which sponsors sixteen NCAA Division I intercollegiate teams, competes under the athletic nickname ‘Toreros.’ In 1961, the Most Reverend Bishop Buddy, the founding father of USD, announced that the school’s nickname would change from Pioneers to Toreros. “The name Toreros

is keeping with the friendly relationship which exists between San Diego and Mexico,” His Excellency said at the time. Torero comes from the Spanish term ‘Toro’, the bull, and from the word ‘Torear,’ to fight bulls. All of the con-testants in the ring are called ‘Toreros.’ Torero is a general term describing a bullfighter and signifies courage, honor and fidelity. USD student-athletes, like the Torero, represent a willingness to stand alone in the ring and accept the challenge. The 2009-10 school year marks the 49th season with Toreros as the official nickname for USD athletic teams.

Toreros Linked to the Community...

Community service, com-munity belonging and social responsibility are important to developing a student-ath-lete’s civic identity and col-lective voice. The impact of participation and pro-social attitudes on volunteering can improve their sense of com-munity connection, social consciousness and generate feelings of responsibility to groups larger than them-selves. USD Athletics part-nered with various organiza-tions to provide rich learning opportunities for student-athletes engaged in public service. Our commitment to the community is something we believe in and is an inte-gral part of our culture and who we are as a university.

During the holidays, USD student-athletes help bring joy into the lives of less fortunate families of the Mission Valley YMCA through our annual TLC Toy Drive, Donate a Dollar and Adopt a Family pro-grams. This past year, we adopted 17 families, do-nated enough gifts for 60 children and purchased more than $1,700 in gift cards. This year, selected members of the softball team participated in the Junior Seau Shop with a Jock event where boys and girls are matched up with a local athlete or celebrity and given money from the fundraiser to shop for christmas presents. Six members of the softball team had the privilage of participating.
