Coaching Staff

Elizabeth Caroscio Head Coach Elizabeth Caroscio begins her fifth season as the head coach at Ozarks. Caroscio took over a program that finished with only 11 wins in 2005, and

quickly made improvements to the club. Her conference win total in 2007 was the most the program has had since the 2004 season. And, the program’s 17 wins that season was the third-most in school history. The 2008 season proved to be historic as Ozarks had wins over a pair of top-25 teams, including the nation’s No. 2 team. In four years, Caroscio has coached 15 All-Conference players, 16 ASC All-Academic Team members, three Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-Region players and three NFCA Academic All-Americans. Prior to Ozarks, Caroscio coached at NCAA III College of New Rochelle in New Rochelle, New York, where she was at the helm of the Blue Angels during the 2005 season. Caroscio made the most of her only season there by earning Hudson Valley Women’s Athletic Conference Softball Coach of the Year honors. Prior to New Rochelle, she was an assistant coach at NCAA III Buffalo State College in Buffalo, New York, from 2002-2004. Caroscio helped the 2004 squad to a 24-16 mark and a spot in the conference post-season playoff tournament. Caroscio earned a bachelor’s degree in communications from State University of New York (SUNY) at Geneseo in 2002. She earned her master’s degree from Canisius College in 2004. Her vast athletic administration experience includes one year as a Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Advisor at Long Island University-C.W. Post and two years in the Marketing and Promotions Department at Canisius College. She currently serves as Ozarks’ SAAC staff representative.

Caroscio was a four-year starter at NCAA III SUNY Geneseo where she served as the team captain during the 2001 and 2002 seasons. She was a two-time All-Conference and a NFCA All-Region player while leading Geneseo to a NCAA III Sweet 16 appearance. Caroscio is a member of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association and the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators.

Chelsea Joslin enters her first year as an assistant coach at Ozarks. Joslin, a native of Claremore, Okla., returns to Ozarks after a record-setting four-year playing career. A first baseman and catcher, Joslin was among the elite power hitters in the American

Southwest Conference from 2005-2008. She is second all-time in the ASC in home runs with 32. Joslin owns career school records in home runs, batting (.378), slugging percent-age (.647), RBI (131) and total bases (281). She owns a number of single-season offensive records at her alma mater. She was named to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-Region Team in 2008 and was a four-time All-Conference player. During her career, she was also a member of the ASC All-Academic Team. Joslin received her bachelor’s degree in Physical Education in 2008. She is currently pursuing her master’s degree in Kinesiology from UT-Permian Basin.

2010 Preview

After suffering a down year in 2009, the Lady Eagles are deter-mined to make things better in

2010. The 2010 version of the Lady Eagles softball team is relying on hard-work and a selfless attitude to help them put the program back on the winning track. Ozarks fell on hard times last season, ending with a 5-35 overall record, but the 2010 team has a renewed focus, ac-cording to fifth-year Head Coach Elizabeth Caroscio. “Our focus is to work hard,” said Caro-scio. “In order for us to be successful the girls must give every ounce of effort and not be outworked. The team is coming together, and I believe if we take care of the little things, the outcome can be in our favor.” With the 2009 season behind them, the Lady Eagles are focused on how to improve this season, instead of dwelling on the past. “Last season’s outcome provided motiva-tion, but it is more of what can we do now,” said Caroscio. “Our focus is not about the past. We want to take this season one game at a time, one pitch at a time and one inning at a time. We want to prove people wrong.” The Lady Eagles return six starting position players and its top ace on the pitching staff.

Overall, ten lettermen return, and all will play significant roles this season. “Everyone has a role,” said Caroscio. “We will have players that must step in and play a different position. This is a scrappy team and one that will have to claw for everything they get.” The coaching staff has stressed the impor-tance of fundamentals during the off-season and in preseason practice. “We believe as a coaching staff if we focus on the fundamentals - make the routine plays, don’t give the opponent an extra out, bunt the ball properly, move runners over, be selfless on offense - that the score will take care of itself and the wins will come,” said Caroscio. “It is three outs, for seven innings, for 40 games. That is how we broke it down to the team.” The pitching staff will be led by four-year starter Stephany Henson. The right-hander will be joined in the rotation by sophomores Kelsey Mefford and Kaci Foster and incom-ing freshman Laken Littlefield. Henson already ranks near the top in several school records and could end her career owning a number of others. In 2009, Henson led the team in ap-pearances (24), strikeouts (69) and collected two wins. Mefford finished with 78.0 innings in the circle, while Foster tossed 15.1 innings. Mef-ford fanned 29.

“Stephany is obviously our leader,” said Caroscio. “We will lean on her. She has been a real leader for our other pitchers and has been a mentor to them. Kaci got some spot playing time last year and pitched well in the fall. We may not use Kelsey as much in the circle because she is at third. Laken is a fresh-man coming in that will throw some innings for us. We have a hard-working group in the circle. Our pitchers and catchers have been working great together.” Mental toughness is something that the coaching staff feels has to be improved in the circle. The influence of Emily Burns behind the plate has been important to the entire staff, according to Caroscio. “We want to make our pitchers more mentally tough,” said Caroscio. “They need to focus on one pitch at a time. Emily is the glue of the pitching staff. She has really stepped up and works well with them. She knows how to maximize output from each pitcher. The bat-tery unit is so important.” The infield is a mix of one veteran player and several sophomores who saw significant time a year ago. Junior Sarah Otteman, who Caroscio describes as a true utility player, makes the switch to shortstop after spend-ing time at a number of positions in the past. Second base will be occupied by sophomore Morgan Goates. Mefford is entrenched at

third, while sophomores Kelsey Stephens and Rebecca Groff will share duties at first base. “We really have only one position in the infield that is the same as last year,” said Caro-scio. “And that is at first base. Our middle in-field is completely different. Sarah has moved to shortstop. She has a great arm and has good range. She has stepped up as a leader, too. She is vocal when she needs to be. Mor-gan has worked hard and is playing with more confidence. Her arm strength and range has improved. I feel like our middle infield will be pretty good. Kelsey (Mefford) will be a huge help at third. Nicole Ashley might see some time at third depending on the rotation of the pitching staff.” Two starters return in the outfield. Ashley, a senior, anchors right field, while sophomore Colbey Russo will play the center field position. Freshman Ali Mathis is penciled in as the starter in left field. “Nicole is in right and plays strong there which helps us make plays at first,” said Caro-scio. “Colbey has put a lot of effort on getting quicker and getting better reads off the bat in the off-season. Ali will be in left field.” In a conference dominated by strong pitching and solid defense, runs can be tough to come by, but Caroscio expects her club to improve its offensive production. The Lady Eagles scored 115 runs last season, a number that must be higher in 2010 in order for the team to compete in one of the premier soft-ball conferences in the country. “We won’t be a power team, but we will generate runs,” said Caroscio. “I think we will see more doubles from this team. We don’t have the home run power we once had, but we have power to hit to the gaps. We have the ability to put the ball in play. In the fall, it wasn’t just one player getting all the hits, it was throughout the lineup.” Russo hit .270 as a freshman, the second highest average of any returner. The speedy outfielder collected 27 hits, including three doubles. Ashley, who collected 21 hits in 2009, enters her senior season as a three-year starter. Mathis will utilize her speed in the outfield and on the base paths. “Colbey wants to get better,” said Caro-scio. “She has worked a lot with Coach Joslin and has worked at hitting on the left side to have that option. She is fast and if we can get her on the bases, we can push her around. Both Nicole and Ali will help us out offensively. I think they can get those extra base hits to score people.” Otteman can be dangerous at the plate. She is a .321 career hitter and has 32 career RBI. “Sarah will be a clutch player for us,” said Caroscio. “She can hit to the gaps and drive in runs.” Stephens provides Ozarks with another bat

that can produce. She hit .250 with five doubles last season. Groff has a keen eye at the plate and started in 24 games. Burns, who homered once last season, is expected to provide power to the team. Both Mefford and Goates saw limited action at the plate last season, but will have increased roles this season. “Kelsey (Stephens) can come up with clutch hits,” said Caroscio. “She can ex-ecute the bunt, too. I think Emily could have a breakout year. She is playing with a lot of confidence and she has power. Beca is our contact hitter. She doesn’t strikeout a lot. She will put the bat on the ball. Her and Sarah will be the toughest strikeout on the team. Kelsey (Mefford) didn’t get a lot of swings last season, but this year she will get more at bats. She can be a gap-type hitter. She has some power. Goates can drive the ball and be productive.” The schedule includes the usual grueling ASC teams and six non-conference oppo-nents. Three of Ozarks’ conference opponents within their division were ranked No. 1 in the country at one time during the 2009 season. “We want to win all of our non-conference games,” said Caroscio. “I think winning our non-conference games can give us momen-tum for our conference games. This confer-ence is the toughest in the nation year in and year out. It is a matter of stepping up to the plate and believing that we can win. This team has every opportunity to win just like all of the teams. It won’t be easy, but that is why we play the game. It goes back to our number one goal to always give 100 percent effort.”

2009 Season Review

ASC Honors Two Senior outfielder Danielle Dirks and sophomore third baseman/catcher Julie Wilkinson were named to the American Southwest Confer-ence All-East Division Second Team. Dirks, a native of Farmington, Ark., led Ozarks in batting (.339), runs (18), triples (4), stolen bases (20) and sacrifice hits (8). The right-handed hitter collected 39 hits and 12 RBI. Her 20 stolen bases ranked fifth in the ASC and her four triples placed her second. Dirks was flawless from her right field position, recording 53 put-outs, five assists and did not commit an error. She had eight multiple-hit games. She went 3-for-4 against UT-Dallas twice and LeTourneau University once. Dirks ends her career ranked in the top five in a number of career records at Ozarks. She is second in doubles (22), triples (5), home runs (6) and total bases (176). She is third in RBI (60) and stolen bases (38), fourth in games played (150) and fifth in at bats (438) and hits (126). Wilkinson, a native of Union-ville, Mo., made the All-Conference Team as a utility player. Wilkinson led the team in hits (40), RBI (22), total bases (55), home runs (2) and slugging percentage (.458). She also hit .333 with five doubles and two triples. Wilkin-son, a switch hitter, had 11 multiple-hit games in 40 starts. One of her best performances of the season came against UT-Dallas March 16 when she went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI. In two sea-sons, she is already ninth at Ozarks in career slugging percentage (.400). In 2008, Wilkinson was named a NFCA Academic All-American. She was also a member of the ASC All-Aca-demic Team in 2009.

Dirks Named NFCA All-Region Senior outfielder Danielle Dirks was named to the Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association Midwest All-Region Third Team. The Farmington, Ark., native was also named to the American South-west Conference All-East Division Second Team in 2009. Dirks, a 5-foot-5 graduate of Farmington High School, was among the most productive outfielders in the region, hitting .339, scoring 18 times, recording four triples and stealing 20 bases. The right-handed speedster collected 39 hits and 12 RBI. Her 20 stolen bases ranked fifth in the ASC and her four triples placed her second. Dirks was flawless from her right field position, recording 53 putouts, five assists and no errors. She had eight multiple-hit games. Dirks made her mark on the record books, finishing in the top-5 in a number of categories at Ozarks. She is second in career doubles (22), triples (5), home runs (6) and total bases (176). She is third in RBI (60) and stolen bases (38), fourth in games played (150) and fifth in at bats (438) and hits (126). ASC: Nation’s Elite NCAA III Conference The ASC once again proved it was among the strongest conferences in NCAA III during the 2009 season. Three teams from the ASC, all ranked No.1 in the country during the season, made the NCAA III tournament. Only 59 teams qualify for the national tournament and it was the third straight year that the ASC has got-ten three teams in the tourney. East Texas Baptist University hosted a regional that included ASC foes Louisiana College and UT-Tyler. UT-Tyler won the regional and advanced to the eight-team College World Series where it lost in the first round. There is plenty of parity within the ASC. ASC champion UT-Tyler lost seven games to conference opponents.

Pretty In PinkFor the second straight year, members of the softball team participated in the annual Arkansas Susan G. Komen Race For The Cure during the fall semester. They were amongst the thousands of participants across the country. Sopho-more Morgan Goates and Kaci Foster along with senior Danielle Dirks ran in the race. The softball team also helped SAAC hold their second annual Breast Cancer Awareness campaign the week prior to the race in which they collected donations, passed out pink ribbons and participated in the race. The pre-vious season, the Lady Eagles joined the National Fastpitch Coaches Association’s StrikeOut Cancer initiative to raise money and awareness on behalf of the American Cancer Society. All donations went to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Both teams wore pink during the game.Julie Wilkinson Danielle Dirks

American Southwest Conference

American Southwest Conference The American Southwest Conference, one of the largest intercollegiate athletic conferences in NCAA Division III, will celebrate its 14th championship season of competition with the 2009-2010 academic year. Founded in May 1996 to provide a structure for intercollegiate athletics among the member institutions, the American Southwest Conference includes former members of the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association (TIAA) and other institutions outside the Texas border. From the eight founding institutions to today’s present group of 15 college and universities, the ASC encompasses institutions sharing similar educational and athletic philosophies. Spreading across four states — Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi — the ASC offers student-athletes competition in 16 sports with opportunity for advancement in both conference and NCAA Division III championships. The roster of American Southwest Conference members in 2009-2010 includes Concordia University Texas, East Texas Baptist University, Hardin-Simmons University, Howard Payne University, LeTourneau University, Louisiana College, University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, McMurry University, Mississippi College, University of the Ozarks, Schreiner University, Sul Ross State University, University of Texas at Dallas, University of Texas at Tyler, and Texas Lutheran University. ASC championships are conducted in 16 sports (8 men, 8 women). Men’s championships are offered in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis and track and field. Women’s championships are offered in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field and volleyball. The American Southwest Conference is headquartered in Richardson, Texas.

Amy Carlton ASC Commissioner Amy Carlton is the Commissioner of the American Southwest Conference with over-sight of the league’s long-term and daily ad-ministration and opera-tions, including member

and NCAA relations, compliance, sched-uling and championships. Carlton was appointed Interim Commissioner July 1, 2006 after serving as ASC Assistant Com-missioner/Director of Media Relations. Carlton joined the ASC office in January 2002 after 13-1/2 years in sports information at NCAA Division I institutions, including 10 years as Assistant Director of Athletic Media Relations at the University of Michigan (1990-2000). She was Assistant Sports Information Director at Northern Illinois University (1989-90) and a graduate intern at both Western Illinois University (1987-88) and Michigan (1988-89). Carlton began her career at Division III institu-tions as an assistant in the news bureau at Franklin College (1981-82) and Director of News and Sports Information at Man-chester College (1982-87). Carlton is a member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Ath-letics (NACDA), National Association of Di-vision III Athletic Administrators (NADIIIAA), National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators (NACWAA), and the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). A native of Greencastle, Ind., Carlton is a 1981 graduate of Franklin College (Ind.), where she earned a Bachelor of Arts de-gree in journalism.

Greg Weghorst Media Relations Director Greg Weghorst was named Director of Media Relations of the American Southwest Conference in February 2007 after serving in an interim role since August 2006.

Weghorst is the fifth media relations director of the ASC. He provides an oversight of the conference’s media rela-tions operation, including compilation of league statistics and standings and NCAA reports, production of the ASC weekly sport reports, maintaining the ASC web site and assisting with conference issues and tournament administration. A sports writer with the Temple Daily Telegram prior to coming to the ASC, Weghorst provided coverage of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, Central Texas Blackhawks/Marshals of the North American Hockey League and Temple-area high schools. He was part of the cov-erage team for the 2005 EV1.net Houston Bowl and the 2004 Major League Baseball All-Star Game. A native of Waco, Texas, he is a 2003 graduate of Mary Hardin-Bay-lor with a Bachelor of Arts degree in mass communications/journalism.

UNIVERSITY OF THE OZARKS

For 175 years, University of the Ozarks has approached education with an unyielding search for truth.

That search led our founders to establish the first co-educational college west of the Mis-sissippi. It set the stage for the first Arkansas woman to receive a college degree. And because truth often defies convention, ours was the first historically white college in the state to admit African-Americans.

Every day, our history inspires Ozarks students to discover their own individual truths. But we won’t expect you to find the answers alone. Through every step of your search, we’ll stand by you as true scholars, mentors, and friends.

Founded in 1834 as Cane Hill School, Uni-versity of the Ozarks is a private, four-year comprehensive university affiliated with the Presbyterian Church. Located on 30 acres in Clarksville, Arkansas (pop. 7,500), Ozarks is home to about 675 students from 22 states and 20 countries.

More than 80 percent of our faculty hold the highest degrees in their fields. Because we’re small by design, our average class size is 14 and the student/ faculty ratio is 13:1.

More than 60 majors, minors, and preprofes- sional degrees, from Composite Science to Strategic Communications are offered. Many Ozarks graduates also go on to top graduate programs in law, medicine, and engineering.

The central mall of campus is flanked by historic Munger Chapel and Walker Hall, a $7 million facility that houses a television studio, radio station, and state-of-the art editing suites. The 38,000-square-foot Robson Library houses more than 175,000 items for reading and research.

Seventy-five percent of students live on cam-pus in one of six residence halls that feature such perks as recreation rooms and in-room computer connections.

At roughly half the national average for a private, liberal arts education, University of the Ozarks’ tuition offers exceptional value. About 95 percent of students receive some type of financial aid, including scholarships, grants, loans, and work study. Over $7.7 mil-lion in financial aid is distributed annually. You may have heard that a liberal arts edu-cation is all about mental agility, intellec-tual prowess, service to others, and critical thinking. We couldn’t agree more. But at Ozarks, we’re also steeped in the tradition of preparedness – for your career, for graduate school, for life. A key part of being prepared is knowing when to ask for help. Ozarks’ Student Support Services (SSS) provides free tutoring, a 24-hour computer lab, resume as-sistance, career and grad school strategies, and more than a dozen other services to help students achieve their very best. Intern-ships are an essential part of the college ex-perience, allowing you to practice newfound skills “in the field” and try a career (or two)

on for size. Ozarks interns are doing research in polymer chemistry, working with the forest service, and volunteering for national political campaigns. Just how much can one student get involved? One Ozarks student landed internships at both the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C. and the FOX News Network in Manhattan and created films for Little Rock’s “48 Hour Film Festival” as well as the Cinequest Film Festival.

Once Ozarks graduates get out into the world, there’s no stopping them. Our alumni pursue a truly incredible array of careers, from writing for ad agencies and practicing clinical psychology to working for the Secret Service. And if you’re interested in further-ing your education, expect to be in good company. More than 85 percent of Ozarks students who apply are accepted to top graduate, medical, and law schools. If you’re not accustomed to personal interac-tion with your instructors, you’ll get used to it soon enough. Both in and out of class, Ozarks faculty demand accountability (don’t be surprised if you get a phone call from your professor when you miss class). That sort of “personal attention” is just one example of our genuine concern for each individual stu-dent’s progress. Our faculty is known for inspir-ing remarkable acts. With their help, students are studying abroad in Strasburg, Florence, and Hong Kong. They’re learning about new forms of international currency trading from experts in the field, and using their Latin skills to enhance research papers on medieval

drama. If this sounds more like master’s work than undergraduate, it’s no accident. Because University of the Ozarks is small by design, professors have the time to delve deeply into every student’s interests – and help make the most of their talents. In the political science program, Dr. Gil Parks’ stu-dents are researching national human rights legislation at American University in D.C. and taking on internships with the National Re-publican Senatorial Committee. They’re also attending law schools nationwide, including Notre Dame, Pepperdine, and Georgetown. Similarly, Dr. Sean Coleman encourages his pre-med students to take full advantage of the liberal arts, with foreign language minors, and immersion trips to countries like Mexico and Italy. With over 40 clubs and organizations to choose from, it isn’t hard to find one you’re truly passionate about. For some, it’s a club with academic affilia-tions like Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) – a global, non-profit organization that helps members develop leadership, teamwork, and communication skills by championing free enterprise and community service. Oth-ers pursue more personal passions by joining Amnesty International, College Republicans, or Young Democrats. And if you’re simply looking to have fun, you won’t be disap-pointed. In the student center, ping-pong matches have been known to go on for hours, and you never know when a soccer game might break out in the quad. Movie nights often hit the big screens in the resi-dence halls.
