Going Green in DanvilleThe Town of Danville has made important strides towardbecoming more environmentally sustainable in the ways weprovide services and conduct our day-to-day business. In theparks and recreation-related arena, we’ve added more fuelefficient cars, including hybrids, to the Town’s vehicle fleet, improved the efficiency of the heating and air conditioningsystems in Town facilities to reduce energy use, and expandedthe Town’s trail system to promote walking and biking insteadof the use of cars.

We print the Activity Guide on recycled paper with natural inks, but also have it available online through the Town of Danvillewebsite at www.ci.danville.ca.us. If you enroll in a class, youautomatically receive an online newsletter which contains newsand information regarding upcoming classes and events as wellas new programs. Registration for the majority of the Town’sprograms is paperless and is confirmed with e-mail receipts. Andwhen the Town’s computers and monitors are replaced, the newunits require only 3% of the energy previously needed tooperate the old ones.

The Teen Centers and summer camp programs utilize recycledproducts for many of the crafts and activities, and the Summerof Service program includes community and beach clean-upsites. Recycling containers are available in Danville parks andfacilities, and the Town supports free full-service recyclingevents. The next recycling event will be held on August 21–22 at the Danville Park & Ride lot and is open to all Californiabusinesses and residents. See page 43 for more information onthis event.

The new Danville Veterans Memorial Building is designed toqualify for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design(LEED) certification and will include photovoltaic panels on theroof that will partially offset electricity use in the building. Thiswill be the first Danville facility to receive LEED certification!

If you have additional ideas regarding how the Town’sRecreation programs, events and facilities can become moreenvironmentally-friendly, please let us know!
