1 SLVP COMPLETES IT’S SECOND PROJECT IN FADUGU! SLVP’S MAMAKA SCHOOL PROJECT COMPLETE! SLVP and the village of Mamaka have completed SLVP’s first project – the Mamaka School. Mamaka, is located inYoni Chiefdom, Tonkolili District, in the Northern Province of Sierra Leone. This project, the Mamaka School Project, be- gan with a partnership be- tween SLVP and the Mamaka village, and expended funds over a period of two and a half years. It took a tremendous amount of commitment, co- operation, and hard work from our donors all over the United States, our board of directors, and the Mamaka village community, in order to complete the project. The Mamaka School project was SLVP’s way of contributing to the rebuilding process of Sierra Leone, and a gift to the children of Mamaka village, in order to promote a safe and condu- cive educational environment. The new Mamaka School con- sists of nine rooms: six class- rooms, a bookstore, a library, a staffroom and a principal’s office. The school is also outfit- ted for electricity, so that in the future, electrical appliances and computers may be used when electricity is available. The construction of the Mamaka School was made possible by our generous donors in the United States, and SLVP would like to thank everyone who has helped us in completing this project. John Amman, Maureen McNa- mara, Albert Kamara and Jim Phillips were able to visit Mamaka this year. Albert and Jim officially handed over the school to Mamaka village on June 12th 2009, and there were numerous speeches, dancing and native music. Mamaka provided several goats and game from local hunters, as part of the feast at the cere- mony. The ceremony was at- tended by SLVP friends Bob Eme4s and Rich Barone. The village of Gofor, approximately 12 miles from the town of Kenema, lies in the Eastern Province of Sierra Leone. Like too many towns and villages in Sierra Leone during the war, Gofor suffered in its loss of local village structures, such as its local school. This new SLVP school building project in Go-for will be the organization’s first endeavor in the Eastern Province. The completed school will house approximately 230 students who live in the village of Gofor and several smaller ones nearby. SLVP Board Member Jim O’Donnell has assisted by sponsoring this project.
