Season Outlook

5www.smcathletics.com

On many levels, the Saint Michael’s College men’s soccer teamenjoyed a successful season in 2009. The Purple Knights won theirfirst five games of the season, and ended the year with four victoriesin their last five contests en route to a 9-5-3 campaign. However,Saint Michael’s fell just short of its goal of returning to theNortheast-10 Conference Tournament, as the Purple Knights fin-ished in ninth place in the standings, just two points shy of a three-way tie for sixth place.

Despite an 11th-place prediction in the NE-10 PreseasonCoaches’ Poll, third-year head coach James Franklin expects hissquad to reach the league’s postseason in 2010. Franklin mustreplace five starters from last year not back this season, but hereturns five of his top six scorers from 2009.

SeniorsA handful of seniors will all play key roles in the Purple

Knights’ success in 2010.Assistant captain Blake Schill is back for his fourth and final

season as a starter with Saint Michael’s. Schill, an NE-10 All-Conference Second Team pick in 2009, is one of the league’s betterdefensive midfielders, and can also contribute to the offensiveattack, scoring a career-high eight points as a jun-ior.

Assistant captain Ryan Gannon alsoshould be a constant in the starting lineup.Gannon led all returning players with 12 pointslast season, and the intelligent playmaker shouldlead an opportunistic Purple Knights’ offenseagain in 2010.

Forward Rondel Ward made the most ofhis playing time last season, as he netted fourgoals (all in league play) in just 13 contests in2009. The athletic Barbadian should see somemore playing time in his final season with thesquad.

Fellow forward Rob Pierce, like Ward, didwell in limited playing time in 2009, as he scoredtwo league goals (including a game-winner)despite missing six games. Strong and physical,Pierce gives the Purple Knights muscle up front.

Andrew Scanlon, who enjoyed a stellar jun-ior season, will help anchor a talented and veteran Purple Knights’defense in 2010. A three-goal scorer last year, Scanlon can also enterthe offensive attack when needed.

JuniorsThe two juniors on Franklin’s squad both figure to be everyday

starters for the Purple Knights in 2010.Captain Rob Pierce, who emerged as a starting back in 2009,

anchors a strong defensive unit for Saint Michael’s. Irving helped thePurple Knights allow just 16 goals in 17 games last season, and useshis height and strength to win most balls in the air.

Ryan Beck, a two-year veteran who missed the 2009 campaign,

is back for his third season with SaintMichael’s. Beck, a quick and smart ath-lete, started all 18 games for the PurpleKnights in 2008, and his return shouldsignificantly aid the team’s defense andmidfield.

SophomoresMore than half of Saint Michael’s

25-player roster consists of sopho-mores. The 13-member class featuresmultiple players at every position, andwill be the key to the success of thesquad in 2010.

In goal, Logan Kingman andChad Chapman will need to replacethe production of Jason Burnett, a stel-lar netminder for the Purple Knights who graduated in May. Neitherplayer has much collegiate experience, but both players are tall, ath-letic, and can serve as the backbone of a talented Saint Michael’sdefense.

On defense, Ross Gruber will again be akey member of the team. He made an immedi-ate splash last year with 15 starts, and is one ofthe taller and quicker backs in the NE-10.

Chris Eckels and Eric Parziale, two soph-omores in their first season with Saint Michael’s,will give depth to Saint Michael’s defensive unit.Parziale, a transfer from Trinity College, is aspeedy back, while Eckels is a more physicaldefender.

Several sophomore midfielders should allsee playing time in 2010. Nick Colangelo,Ryan McDermott, Ian Rowe and SteveScanlon combined to play 42 games last season, and should collectively increase that total thisyear. Dana DiPinto, meanwhile, joins the rosterafter serving as a team manager last year, whileColin Thompson also begins his first year withthe team this season.

At forward, Ben Lessard and MarcoDeLilli both have the ability to find the back of the net. Lessard wasa valuable mid-game substitute as a first-year last season, whileDeLilli joins the Purple Knights for his first season in 2010.

First-YearsFive first-years help complete strong midfield and defensive

units for Saint Michael’s. In the midfield, Anthony Stanley, the firstplayer from Honduras in program history, could be a significant fac-tor, while New Hampshire natives Chris George and OmarKhartabil will also get time to make an impact. On defense, DavidClough (from Maine) and Logan Kelly (Alaska) come from oppo-site coasts, but both have the ability to contribute right away.
