2010 SAFETY DIRECTORYWHEN IT COMES TO SAFETY COME TO GSBE!
Welcome to the GSBE 2010 Safety Resource Directory!
The intent of this directory is to provide an easy to use reference when you are looking for safety trainers and instructors. The first section of the Safety Resource Directory lists the business by safety services, and the second section lists the business alphabetically.
Other resources include a listing of regulatory agencies, Cal OSHA Consulting, and State Compensation Insurance Fund whom you can contact to discuss training opportunities. There are many training opportunities available at little to no cost. Many of the listed providers offer more training topics than are listed in this directory. Contact them directly for a complete list of safety training.
The information in this GSBE Safety Resource Directory is available on the GSBE website at www.gsbe.net.
Feedback is welcomed and encouraged. If you have additional instructors you would like to include, please contact the GSBE Safety Committee at [email protected].
I want to thank the GSBE Board of Directors for their support of this project, the members of the GSBE Safety Committee for their commitment and effort, and all the Builders Exchanges that shared their list of safety instructors and trainers.

1. Look up the training provider under Safety Directory Listing of Services starting on page 8. The alphabetical listing for the training provider is available starting on page 11.
2. Contact the potential trainer for specific information regarding the safety training and pricing structure.
3. Tips can be found in the Directory on contracting with a speaker/trainer. Here is a brief summary:
• What do you want to achieve by getting a specific trainer?• What does your Exchange/Association need from the trainer, be specific?• Ask for references and then call them.• See the speaker/trainer in action prior to contracting for their services. Is the speaker interesting, engaging, tuned into the needs of the construction industry?• Get three prices quotes if possible.• Sometimes you get what you pay for … free may be good for you, but is free good for your members?• Make sure all fees are clearly spelled out in advance. Do they charge extra for providing handouts, materials, booklets, A/V equipment, travel and lodging, etc.• Determine if you need to fulfill a “minimum attendance” requirement. Make sure they do not charge for cancellations. What is the cancellation policy?• Create a “Contract” or “Agreement” that you use with all your speakers.• Provide the trainer with seminar survey forms to be distributed to the class. This allows for the class to evaluate the trainer and provide valuable feedback.
The Golden State Builders Exchanges (GSBE) and the GSBE Safety Committee make no representations or warranties regarding the companies and/or trainers, suppliers, consultants referred to in this publication. Anyone using the directory must conduct their own investigation and due diligence prior to contracting with any company or trainer. The GSBE and the GSBE Safety Committee accepts no liability for the information contained herein.
GSBE Safety Committee Mission Statement
The GSBE Safety Committee provides guidance to the GSBE Board of Directors on safety programs related to the construction industry, providing a forum and clearinghouse for the betterment of the industry.

Importance of Safety Training
Routine work can dull alertness and a relaxed attitude can replace the caution that existed when the job was new and interesting. In many jobs the same route is traveled daily over the same roads or the same tasks are repeated with little conscious thought. Without some periodic reawakening to the ever-present hazards, lethargy deepens and the odds of an accident occurring can increase.
Workers may not always recognize the importance of safety training or think of it as unnecessary because they’ve “been doing it for years.” But an important benefit of periodic safety training is the reminder that a danger can exist and the no one is immune to accidents. Therefore, it is important for workers to understand the purpose of the training session, why it will be useful to them, and what can result from not following safety rules and procedures.
The safety training should be organized so that the order in which the material is presented will match the steps that should be taken on the job. Make sure every worker understands the training material; not just that they were present or a test was given. Insist on questions from trainees after a session to tell you what did or didn’t sink in. This will let you know what has to be reviewed again. If there’s a general lack of understanding of hazards or safety rules and practices, schedule another safety meeting or plan a refresher course for a later date.
Employees should be able to immediately practice and apply new knowledge and skills. If workers don’t understand safety training information well enough to use it on the job, the training has not been effective. There should be immediate feed-back if workers are doing their job safely or not. Supervisors should watch employees do their jobs and question them, to identify what they do, or don’t, know.
Most of these tips are relatively simple and inexpensive solutions, but the safety payoff can be enormous. Remember, training is only effective when workers understand, and use, what they’ve learned. It takes less than a second to lose the rest of your life.
