Don’t just keep everyone up-to-dateon important news and events.

Do it in style.

Newsletters are a fantastic way for companies, government agencies, and churches to keep their

members or employees informed. But unfortunately, many organizations see dull black and white copies

as the way to go, simply because they are quick and cheap. Full color printing is easier and more affordable

than you may think, resulting in newsletters that are much more attractive and enjoyable for readers.

Take advantage of PIP’s newsletter printing service and make sure that your communications have both

substance and style.

If the concept of seeing the Irish Green, White and Gold tricolour fl ag fl ying at the Winter Olympic Games seems unlikely to you, you could be forgiven. After all snow rarely settles on the Emerald Isle. Rain Ireland has, – ski slopes it doesn’t. However this ambitious little Island is the home-land of some tough, ambitious and talented athletes, one of them in Alpine Ski Racing.

Kirsten McGarry, Ireland’s best ever Alpine Ski Racer, proudly lifted the tricolour at the Turin Winter Olympic Games opening ceremony in 2006, as her elder sister Tamsen had before her in Salt Lake City 2002. If it’s a surprise that Irish Alpine Ski Racing has already raised the fl ag hopefully Kirsten’s 61 International Medals will impress.

Born in Dublin in 1985 Kirsten starting skiing as soon as she could walk; out in the French Alps where her parents, dedicated skiers themselves, were teaching Irish groups of holiday-makers. Kirsten’s 2nd place in her fi rst competition at the age of 9yrs gave an indication of her potential.By the time Kirsten fi nished school in June 2003 she had

passed all exams with fl ying colours, winning the school prize in French, Biology and Business Studies. She had also represented her school at the Irish Biology Olympics, been on her school’s Cross Country running team at county Leinster level, and been part of the Irish debating team, winning a fi nalist’s medal for debating in French at the Joutes Oratoires in Paris. In her ski career Kirsten had represented Ireland at the European Youth Olympics and won 12 medals in International races.

Choosing to turn down a place at the prestigious Trinity College Dublin in favour of pursuing her dream of skiing for Ireland was not a decision Kirsten found diffi cult, and her ski progress was solid, but the path itself was diffi cult. With no other Irish racers skiing at her level and no fi nancial help at all (until 2005) the only option to keep costs down was to join in with other national teams. It gradually dawned that this would never be the best option since Kirsten would always be the outsider, the one the coaches didn’t have to focus on, the one in a different suit, the one with a different language, the one on second rate equipment.

It would be fair to say that given those circumstances Kirsten has made absolutely astounding progress. Imagine scoring 61 medals in anything in International competition! Imagine getting to the top 500 (as she will hopefully be listed on the next Ski Federation list) across 4 events Slalom, Giant Slalom, Super G, and Super Combined- where she is currently ranked 178th in the World. In ski racing terms those are good rankings for a girl from Dublin.

Kirsten says her best moment was at the Turin, Italy 2006 Olympics where she was given the honor of carrying the Irish Tricolour fl ag. Other moments of pride are representing Ireland at the 2007 World Champs in Are, Sweden, the 2005 World Champs in Bormio Italy and at 3 Junior World Championships and a Youth Olympics. To make it to the top in Alpine Ski Racing, as in many sports, you have to have not only talent but dedication and the determination to work incredibly hard. Kirsten has all three in abundant measure, but without a good program she can never represent to the pinnacle of her potential. Support from all offi cial Irish sources covers about 10% of the costs of a good training and racing program, family hard work and sacrifi ce has to bridge the gap, which is too wide, therefore Kirsten’s program is not the ideal preparation and it is likely she will never reach her full potential, and therefore never represent you and the folks back in Ireland to the best of her ability.

You may be able to think of a way to help Kirsten’s quest for that noticeable Vancouver result. If you can support her in any way, back here in Ireland your “Number One” racer would be truly grateful.

continuation of Michael W. Balfe article

In London, an imposing marble statue of Balfe, erected in 1874, stands in the lobby of the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, in recognition of this important Irish composer’s great contribution to the British musical scene during the Victorian years and beyond. It is the same theatre where Balfe had so much success with his works.

In Dublin in Balfe Street, a hotel is now located on the site where the house in which he was born stood until the 1960s, when it was demolished. There’s a plaque at the rear of the hotel recognizing his birthplace. He is Ireland’s most famous composer of the nineteenth-century.

Balfe’s accomplishments were monumental given his time. He never worked at anything but music. After his death, in a nostalgia piece, the London Times referred to him as the “Rossini of Britain.” It was felt appropriate that Balfe deserved to be placed on the same pedestal as one of Europe’s greatest composers, Gioachino Rossini.

BASIL [email protected]

Basil Walsh is a biographer and writer on distinguished Irish musicians and singers of the past. His biography of Irish composer, Michael W. Balfe, has recently been published in Ireland and the USA by Irish Academic Press in association with Arts Council of Ireland, for Balfe’s bicentenary in 2008. Mr. Walsh resides in Florida.

KATHY PRENDERGAST AWARDED THE IRISH AMERICAN CULTURAL INSTITUTE’S

O’MALLEY ART AWARDDublin born and educated artist Kathy

Prendergast is the latest artist to be presented with the Irish American Cultural Institute’s O’Malley Art Award. The €5,000 award recognizes and promotes achievements in the visual arts, particularly those which have stimulated or guided other Irish artists. This year’s award also recognized an artist in mid-career.

The award is given in the name of the family of the late Ernie O’Malley, who, in addition to his literary and patriotic activities, was also a notable collector of modern Irish art.

Born 1958 in Dublin, graduated NCAD, Dublin 1980 and RCA, London 1986, Kathy Prendergast began exhibiting in the early 1980s and currently lives and works in London. She participated in the 1985 Paris Biennale and in 1995 she was awarded the Premio 2000 for the best young artist at the Venice Biennale. A section of her project 'The City Drawings', was shown rst at Venice and subsequently at the Tate Gallery, London. A larger section was exhibited in Prendergast's 1999 solo exhibition at the Irish Muesum of Modern Art, which has since acquired the work in its entirety for its permanent collection. In recent years Prendergast has exhibited widely in various venues including Sydney Biennale, the ICA, Boston, the Drawing Center, New York and '0044', an exhibition which toured PS1, New York, Albright-Knox Gallery, Buffalo in 1999/2000. She is represented in the collections of the Tate Gallery, London, the Cheekwood Museum of Art, Nashville, the Albright-Knox Museum, Buffalo and the Contemporary Museum, Honolulu, and numerous private collections in Ireland, Great Britain, Europe and USA.

T A L KLet’s talk a little about “Tennis Etiquette”. No one likes to come out to play and the court is a wreck with water cups crammed in the fence, ball cans and balls all over the place, paper wrappers and banana peels on the benches and no balls in the score keeper. The staff tries to keep the courts looking great all day long but if everyone would help by cleaning up after their match, it would be much easier to keep our facility looking first class. If you are coming out with a child to practice or just hit balls, be aware of others on the adjoining court. If you are having difficulty keeping balls on your court next to a match you might check with the desk to see if a more secluded court is available. Anytime a match is on the court next to you, you should not practice serves with a bucket of balls or feed a bucket to your hitting partner. It is difficult for the players to locate their match balls in the middle of thirty or forty practice balls. Practice is good but let’s all be considerate of others trying to play a match.

We begin court reservations at 9:00am. The hard courts are available before nine but if you do need to play on a soft court before nine you must check with Rich before taking a court to insure that all the necessary maintenance has been completed. The lights are set to turn off at 10:00pm and the water system starts its cycle at that time as well so plan your night play to be finished no later than 10:00.

Thanks,

Ron

The Circulatory System of the body includes the heart, the blood and blood vessels, and the lymphatic system. The body responds to massage by dilating the blood vessels, thereby increasing circulation. This increase in blood flow is comparable to that of exercise. In fact, it has been documented that local circulation increases during massage up to 3 times more than circulation at rest.

As blood vessels dilate, blood pressure is decreased. Both diastolic and systolic readings decline and this decrease continues for approximately 40 minutes after the massage session has ended.

Certain types of massage boost circulation to the extremities. A person with poor circulation can suffer from a variety of discomforts including the pooling of fluid in the extremities (like the toes), cold hands and feet, and fatigue and soreness caused by the accumulation of lactic acid in the muscles. Good circulation brings damaged, tense muscles the oxygen-rich blood they need to heal. Leg massage stimulates both the blood circulation and the lymphatic system and if received regularly can help to prevent varicose veins.

Massage facilitates circulation mechanically as well, because the pressure created by the massage technique actually moves blood through the blood vessels assisting venous blood flow back to the heart. The release of this same pressure causes new blood to flow in transporting nutritive materials such as iron and oxygen to the cells and tissues more efficiently. The actual count of red blood cells is increased as is the oxygen saturation in the blood.

The squeezing and pulling also flushes lactic acid from the muscles and improves the circulation of the lymph fluid which carries metabolic waste away from muscles and internal organs. Massage also increases the count of white blood cells which play an important role in the body’s defense system by fighting a variety of invaders. The increase in the removal of waste products and white blood cells can help speed up the body’s healing process.

The function of the circulatory system is to be the main transport mechanism of the body for various fluids, gases, nutrients, wastes, antibodies, hormones, heat and chemicals which affects the entire organism. So it follows that a beneficial change to this system has a positive effect on the entire body.

For more information please see your massage therapist.
