MERCER SPORTS NETWORKMercer University Athletics has announced that it has renewed its contract with Clear Channel Broadcasting Inc. to serve as the fl ag-ship radio network for the University’s men’s basketball games in 2010-11. The broadcaster’s sister FM stations of Peach 96.5 & 102.5 (WPCH and WZCH ) will serve as the fl agship stations for all broad-casts this season.

MU will also broadcast selected Bears’ women’s basketball, baseball and softball games. Plans for the expanded coverage to include those sports are currently being formulated, but have not yet been fi nalized.

Mercer’s Atlantic Sun Conference games will be among the broad-casts, including the 2011 A-Sun Basketball Championships, to be played once again this year on the Mercer campus at the University Center.

Rick Cameron, “Voice of the Bears” for the past four seasons, will continue to call the play-by-play. Mercer’s senior assistant vice president for marketing communications returned to the broadcast booth in 2006 after originally doing radio play-by- play in the late 1970s.

2010 SEASON PREVIEWThe 2010 Mercer volleyball campaign marks the conclusion of a four-year odyssey for three seniors, Libby Hansch, Krista Hurley and Erica Vrvilo. Mercer’s senior trio have collected 37 wins in Orange and Black, but this season the group aims to accomplish a goal that has proved elusive, the Atlantic Sun Championship.

After a landmark 18-win season in 2008, last year’s Mercer team suff ered a drop-off which was a direct result of a young, inexperienced roster. After winning just six of its fi rst 23 matches last season, the team began to reach its potential late in the year, fi nishing 5-1 in its last six con-tests.

Rooke expects the 2010 Bears to pick up where they left off last season and has high hopes for the team. One reason Rooke is confi dent is because she fi nds it easy to draw parallels between the 2008 squad and this year’s team.

“From day one, I’ve noticed a strong resemblance to our 2008 team,” said Rooke. “Like in 2008, we have strong leadership from the top down and our seniors’ attitudes mirror the class of 2008.”

Overall, Mercer returns nine key players from a season ago and welcomes the arrival of six new-comers.

MIDDLE BLOCKER

For the fourth consecutive season, Rooke returns the formidable combination of Hansch and Hurley at the middle blocker position. In their three seasons with Mercer, Hansch and Hurley have devel-

oped into arguably the league’s best one-two punch at the position.

“Libby and Krista bring two diff erent styles of play to the position, which adds versatility to our off ense,” Rooke said. “It certainly makes us harder to scout and

defend against.”

Hansch and Hurley both enter the season ranked among the program’s top-fi ve players in career attack percentage. In addition to their off ensive prowess, the duo is

known for disrupting the opponent’s attacking strategy as well. In each of their seasons with the Bears, the team has ranked among the league’s top-four teams in blocks per set.

Joining the seniors at the middle blocker spot are returning junior Charlayna Braxton and incoming freshman Zoe Becton. Rooke insists Braxton has made huge strides since last fall and had a strong fi nish during the team’s spring season.

Becton arrives in Macon after a stellar four-year career as a high school player in Al-buquerque, New Mexico. During her time at Del Norte High School, Becton racked up

numerous accolades, including being named All-District player of the year and being featured among the American Volleyball Coaches’ Association’s “Top Players to Watch”.

OUTSIDE HITTER

At the outside hitter position the Bears boast the triple-threat attack of juniors Amiee Frutchey, Rachel Urbelis and sophomore Jamie Duff y.

Both Frutchey and Urbelis have shown fl ashes of brilliance during their careers with the Bears. Frutchey was named an All-Freshman team selection in 2008 after appearing in 100 sets and racking up 165 kills.Urbelis became an integral part of the Mercer roster last season, piling up 221 kills in just 87 sets. On Oct. 26 of

2010 SEASON PREVIEWlast season, Urbelis landed the Atlantic Sun Player of the Week selection after tallying an as-

tounding 30 kills in the Bears’ 3-2 victory at Campbell.

Competing for time at the outside hitter position this season will be freshmen Cassie Roy and Emily Rochefort.

“Cassie and Emily are valuable because they will provide athleticism and a spark of energy off the bench,” said Rooke.

RIGHTSIDE HITTERS

Yet another position in which experience abounds is the rightside hitter position. Vr-vilo and junior Anna Coursey will rotate at the spot for the third consecutive season. Between the two, Vrvilo and Coursey have combined for over 500 kills in the past two seasons.

“It’ll be interesting to see who will take the reigns at the outside hitter position this season,” said Rooke. “Both Erica and Anna are hungry and absolutely capable of having an outstanding season.”

Newcomer Lizzie Knapper joins the pair of upperclassmen on the rightside for the Bears in 2010. Knapper hails from Cleveland, Ohio where she helped lead her high school team to the AAAA Regional and State Championships in her senior season.

LIBERO

For the fi rst time since 2008, Mercer enters the season with a clear-cut starter at the libero position. After winning the position midway through the 2009 season, Charlotte Harris returns for Rooke as the defensive leader in 2010.

“Charlotte is extremely ambitious and confi dent in her role as our libero,” Rooke said. “The team rallies behind her at the position and 2010 should be a breakout season for her.”

In 51 sets last season, Harris posted an impressive 4.61 digs per set average, ranking third among conference players in the category.

SETTERAs the 2010 season approaches, the role of setter remains a competition between freshmen Carly Iannarino and Bridget Sheerin. Rooke characterizes the pair as young, intelligent players who are quick learners.

“Both of our setters are already showing signs that they can quarterback this off ense,” Rooke said.Sheerin, who stands six-feet tall, attended Marist High School in Chicago, Ill. At Marist, Sheerin earned All-Conference honors as a senior captain of the Redhawks.

Iannarino garnered All-Conference honors in her sophomore, junior and senior seasons at Southlake Christian Academy in Huntersville, N.C.

2010 SEASON PREVIEWAtlantic Sun schedule is a single-round of contests, a departure from the recent home-away format.

Over the last two seasons, the A-Sun has used a double-round format for conference opponents, each school meeting its league opponents at home and on the road. This season, for the fi rst time since 2007, Mercer has only one crack at each A-Sun foe.

“The change in our conference schedule provides the additional opportunities for preseason tourna-ments and non-conference match-ups,” Mercer head coach Noelle Rooke said. “In preparation for this year’s schedule, I attempted to put together a balanced schedule featur-

ing both elite teams and teams with comparable RPI’s to ours.”

The season’s fi rst contest pits Mercer against Eastern Washington at Washington’s Invitational on Aug. 27 in Se-attle. The Bears are also slated to face Pac-10 powerhouse Washington, Portland State and Seattle University at the two-day event.

Last season, Washington rose as high as No. 3 in the AVCA Coaches Poll before falling in the second round of the NCAA tournament to Colorado State. Eastern Washington fi nished the season No. 116 in the national RPI rankings after compiling an 18-11 record in 2009. Seattle looks to rebound after last season’s 7-20 campaign.

Following its trip to Seattle, Mercer returns to the southeast for a battle at Auburn on Sept. 1. The matchup with the Tigers marks the third-consecutive year Mercer has trav-eled to Auburn. The teams have split the last two contests.

On Sept. 3-4, Mercer hosts its annual Bear Brawl non-conference tournament. This year’s fi eld includes Presbyterian, UT Martin and The Citadel.

Next up after the Bear Brawl is a mid-week test at in-state rival Georgia State on Wednes-day, September 8. In 2008, Rooke guided her team to the program’s fi rst win over Geor-gia State before falling to the Panthers last year. In 2010, Georgia State begins a new era under recently-hired head coach Tami Ores. Ores came from the University of Maryland, where she served as the associate head coach and recruiting coordinator for the Terrapins.

After the match with Georgia State, Mercer’s schedule includes two more non-conference tournaments before beginning conference play. On Sept. 10-11, the Bears participate in the North Carolina State Tournament with Morehead State, NC State and Georgia Southern.

Both Georgia Southern and Morehead State posted 21-win seasons in 2009 and seem poised to break into the nations’ top-100 teams this fall. NC State aims to improve upon last year’s 8-27 mark.

The fi nal non-conference tournament comes at South Carolina State on Sept. 17-18. Mercer

2010 SEASON PREVIEWalso squares off with North Carolina Central and Hampton at the event.

Sandwiched in between the fi nal non-conference tournaments is a trip to Florida A&M on Sept. 14. The road match against the Rattlers marks the fi rst of a road-home, two-game set with the defend-ing Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Champions. FAMU travels to Macon for a clash in the University Center on Oct. 23.

Other non-conference opponents include Savan-nah State, UNC Asheville and UNC Wilmington. Mercer faces both Savannah State and UNC Ashe-ville at home and on the road. Savannah State invades Macon on Sept. 18 while the Bears return the favor on Oct. 26 with a trip to Savannah. Mer-cer’s home match against UNC Asheville on Sept. 28 marks the fi nal tune-up before conference play starts at Lipscomb on Oct. 2. Mercer tangles with the Bulldogs once more on Oct. 19 in Asheville.

On Oct. 31, the Bears are slated to meet UNC Wilmington in their fi nal non-conference test of the season.

“One of my goals is to let my players regain the confi dence that they experienced a couple of season ago,” Rooke said. “It’s simple; everyone knows that winning builds confi dence.”

All told, Mercer is prepared to face nine opponents who fi nished 2009 ranked among the nation’s top 125 teams based on RPI.

NOELLEROOKE

Head CoachSeventh SeasonFlorida Southern, 1996

Head Coach Noelle Rooke enters her seventh season at the helm of the Mercer volleyball program. The native of Agoura, Calif., is the winningest coach in the school’s history and recently celebrated her 200th head coaching win in a 3-1 triumph at Florida Gulf Coast on Nov. 7, 2009.

Rooke’s 200th win came as a part of a fi ve-match conference winning streak that was the defi ning mo-ment for the 2009 squad. Facing the loss of four key seniors, the 2009 team battled its way to eleven wins, fi ve of which came in the last six matches of the year.

In 2008, Rooke enjoyed her most successful season with the Bears and became the fi rst volleyball coach in the school’s history to be named conference coach of the year. Rooke earned the honor after guiding the Bears to an 18-10 (13-7 A-Sun) regular season record. The 2008 season featured the highest win total for the program in 14 years and top league win total in program history.

Under Rooke that season, Mercer was one of the top defensive teams in the nation, fi nishing the season ranked 16th in digs per set. Senior libero Claire Tucker, who was honored as an all-conference second-team player, fi nished the season 8th in the nation in digs per set (5.41). On the off ensive front, senior setter Kelly

Jansen fi nished her career as the program’s all-time leader in assists (3,196). Not only was Rooke’s squad eff ective on the court, they also excelled in the classroom. Nine members of the 2008 squad were named to the Atlantic Sun Honor Roll.

In 2007, sophomore Jen Darty broke the school single-season record for blocks per game (1.14), and block assists (95) while her older sister, Julie Darty fi nished her career as the school’s all-time career leader in kills per game (3.18).

In 2006, under Rooke, the Bears made their marks in the record books. Jen Darty garnered A-Sun Freshman of the Year accolades, becoming the fi rst Bear to earn the honor since Katie Plummer in 2001. Chelsea Gebben earned a spot in the NCAA record books, serving 22 consecutive points in a match against Savannah State. Mercer also set several records in the A-Sun, includ-ing the three-game kill (68) and assists (67) records in a match against UNC

Asheville. In 2006 Bears also made an impact on the school record books, breaking six records in the season and career books.

In 2005, the Bears got off to a rocky start as they dropped 15 of their fi rst 20 matches including fi ve straight losses to open conference play. Rooke rallied her young team and challenged them to play better down the

stretch, and the Bears responded with six consecutive wins to close the regular season, including four straight in confer-ence play. Mercer secured the No. 5 seed in the A-Sun Tourney, marking their third consecutive trip.

In her fi rst season with the Bears, Rooke’s guided her new squad to a 13-16 record and the sixth seed at the conference tournament. Rooke coached Katie Plummer as she fi nished her career at Mercer and became the fi rst Bear to record over 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in her career. Not only that, Rooke was responsible for moving Liz Kane to the libero position, which allowed her to rewrite the Mercer record books and go down as one of the best liberos in the program’s history.

Taking over a program and raising the bar is nothing new for Rooke. Prior to arriving at Mercer, she served as head coach for six seasons at two diff erent schools where she experienced considerable success. In her fi rst head coaching position, Rooke took over at South Carolina Aiken and went 64-42 in three seasons. While at USC Aiken, she coached two players who earned academic All-America honors.

Following her stint at USC Aiken, Rooke spent one season as an assistant coach at Rowan University before taking the helm of the Profs’ program. Once again, Rooke righted the ship and raised Rowan’s expectations. In three seasons at Rowan she went 65-27 and led the Profs to the NCAA Tournament for just the second time in school history. Her 2002 team fi nished with a 27-9 record and claimed the New Jersey Athletic Conference title for just the fi fth time in school history, earning Rooke Coach of the Year honors.

An impressive student-athlete in her own right, Rooke was a four-year letterwinner in volleyball, soccer and track in high school, earning fi rst-team all-conference honors in all three sports her junior and senior years. She was also named MVP and team captain of the volleyball team during her senior year.

Following her stellar high school career, Rooke went on to star as a setter at Florida Southern. She was named team captain and MVP, as well as being named second-team all-conference her senior year.

Rooke earned her bachelors degree in sociology from Florida Southern in 1996, where she took her fi rst coach-ing job as a graduate assistant. She resides in Macon and is married to former Mercer soccer standout, Max Rooke.

What distinguishes a good university from a great universityextends far beyond the boundaries of its curriculum and its campus. The competence and character of an institution’s graduates are, more often than not, the hallmarks by which its reputation is both earned and measured.

As a private, co-educational institution, Mercer University has emerged as one of the premier universities in the Southeast and the nation.

Mercer is truly a dynamic and comprehensive center of undergraduate, graduate and professional education. Mercer’s outstanding faculty take students beyond the rigors of academic programs to explore the challengesof reason, responsibility, compassion and character. Through learning, living and leading, Mercer students are prepared not only to confront, but also to embrace the challenges of their future. Under the leadership of promi-nent Georgia Baptist leader Jesse Mercer, Mercer University was founded in Penfi eld, Ga., in 1833 and later moved to Macon in 1871. From its humble beginnings as a small liberal arts college, Mercer now offers pro-grams in 11 schools and colleges. Conveniently located in the middle of the state, Macon serves as the educa-tional, medical, cultural and commercial hub of central Georgia. Located just one hour from Atlanta - one of

Page 47: 2010 Mercer Volleyball Media Guide

the nation’s most popular international cities - and two hours from the Atlantic coast, Macon is easily accessible from two interstate highways - I-75 and I-16. Consistently ranked by U.S. News & World Report and The Princ-eton Review among the nation’s leading universities, Mercer considers one of its strengths to be its superior fac-ulty, who “teach from the heart.” At Mercer, students benefi t from learning experiences guided by caring faculty, not teaching assistants found at many universities as is the case at many universities. The Higher Education Research Institute at UCLA recently named Mercer as a “highly selective” university, and The Princeton Review has placed Mercer among the Best 351 Colleges in North America.

The University is comprised of the College of Liberal Arts, the Walter F. George School of Law, the School of Phar-macy and Health Services, the School of Medicine, the Eugene W. Stetson School of Business and Economics,

the School of Engineering, the James and Carolyn McAfee School of Theology, the Tift College of Education, the Georgia Baptist Col-lege of Nursing, the College of Continuing and Professional Studies, and the Townsend School of Music. The University also operates the Mercer University Press in Macon and the Mercer Engineering Research Center in Warner Robins.

Mercer’s enrollment is nearly 8,100 students. While many students come from the Southeast, more than 38 states and 30 countries are represented among the student body. The average class size at Mercer is 21, with a student/faculty ratio of 13:1 - unusually low for a major university.

The benefi ts of campus living are numerous - the development of life-long friendships, a sense of community, enhanc-ing campus involvement and higher academic performance. For many new students, this is the fi rst time they have lived away from home, and the community that develops on campus and in residence halls becomes a second family.

All freshman and sophomores (fi rst-year and/or transfer students) are required to live on campus, with the exception of married students, students above the age of 21, students with children and/or students who live at home with a parent or guardian within reasonable commuting distance. In each of Mercer’s residence halls, safety comes fi rst and foremost. The exterior doors are locked at all times, and students use their identifi cation cards to gain ac-cess into their residence hall.

Even with its picturesque setting, the spirit of Mercer is not in the grandeur of its buildings, but in the gracious-ness of its people - a friendly, family-like community of faculty, staff and students who strive for excellence in all that they do.

The University off ers a wealth of fascinating experi-ences and activities both in and outside the classroom. From academic clubs and honor societies, to perform-ing arts and special interest groups, to 16 national fraternities and sororities on campus, students can choose from more than 80 on-campus organiza-tions to discover new talents and interests and to gain important leadership skills they will need for life after college.

The University Center houses all 15 of Mercer’s NCAA Division I ath-letics offi ces, training rooms and team rooms. Opened in 2004, it is a state-of-the-art facility that can hold up 3,200 spectators for basketball and volleyball.

UNIVERSITY CENTERMercer broke ground on the centerpiece of the Macon campus in the fall of 2001. The

University Center has become one of the premier venues in the nation for college bas-ketball and volleyball. The $40 million facility has become the focal point for almost all

campus activities, providing students with an area for study, a food court, and a coff ee shop.

The “Street” is a tree-lined, sunlit indoor patio, providing students with an area to study, so-cialize, and dine on cuisine from the food court, including Chic Fil-A, Subway, Burger Studio, and Sushi Hot Bowls. Bear Rock Cafe is a coff ee shop and internet café for students to use either with high-speed connections throughout the fl oor area with the wireless internet connections, or with Bear Rock’s computers. Students can also relax and watch either of two fl at screen televisions, or relax outside on the Patio overlooking the Greek Village and campus.

Both students and athletes have state of the art fi tness facilities, with weight train-ing equipment and cardiovascular theater, as well as a 1/8 mile indoor track. The track overlooks the lower level, which has three full-size basketball and volleyball courts for intramural and recreation use.

Another distinguishing feature of the University Center is the 25-meter indoor swim-ming pool for use by both students and teams for lap swim and water strength and speed drills. Athletes have a separate weight room for use during team workouts with

WILLIAM D. UNDERWOODMercer during a period of dy-namic growth and development for the University. Since his ar-rival as Mercer’s 18th President in 2006, enrollment has increased by 18 percent to more than 8,200 students. Mercer has launched a second medical school campus (in Savannah), initiated a master’s-level physician assistant program and a doctoral-level program in physical therapy and added Ph.D. programs in Educational Leader-ship, Curriculum and Instruction, and Nursing.

Refl ecting an increased emphasis on research, Mercer in 2009-10 met the criteria established by the Carnegie Foun-dation for reclassifi cation as a research-doctoral university. Over the past three years, the number of Ph.D. students has increased from fewer than 25 to approximately 200, while the amount of externally funded research expenditures has grown to nearly $25 million. In addition to increased levels of funding from the National Institutes of Health and the Na-tional Science Foundation, Mercer scientists have for the fi rst time been funded as eminent cancer scientists by the Georgia Cancer Coalition, while other Mercer scientists are now receiv-ing funding to support their research through the Georgia Research Alliance.

The University has intensifi ed its longstanding commitment to service-learning and community engagement under President Underwood’s leadership. During the spring of 2009, Mercer announced a $5 million grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation to support continued revitaliza-tion of the College Hill Corridor between campus and down-town Macon. The groundbreaking Mercer On Mission pro-

gram, launched in 2007, has been recognized by the Clinton Global Initiative as “an exemplary approach to addressing a specifi c global challenge.” Mercer earned the highest federal recognition for community engagement by the Corporation for National and Community Service in 2009, and in 2008 became the only university in Georgia to receive the Carnegie Foundation’s designation for “Curricular Engagement and Outreach and Partnerships.”

Prior to joining Mercer, President Underwood served at Baylor University as Interim President and held the prestigious Leon Jaworski Chair at the Baylor School of Law. President Underwood is an accomplished educator and scholar. He was designated a Master Teacher at Baylor in recognition of extraordinary classroom teaching over an extended period. He is an elected member of the American Law Institute and the American Bar Foundation.

President Underwood was awarded the J.D. degree summa cum laude by the University of Illinois College of Law in 1985, where he graduated as class salutatorian and was an editor of the University of Illinois Law Review. Following graduation, he clerked for the Honorable Sam D. Johnson of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, prior to practic-

ing law for several years with a large law fi rm in Dallas. He also holds an undergraduate degree from Oklahoma Baptist University, where he met his spouse, Lesli. They have two children, Jessica and William

A Message from the Athletic Foundation President“As a former student-athlete and now as a Mercer alumna, I am excited about the future of the Mercer Athletics program. We are bringing to our campus some of the brightest and most talented student-athletes in the country.

“As you can see, Mercer has had outstanding recent success, both in competition and in the classroom. In order to provide student-athletes with the best possible resources for maximum success in the future, we need your help.

“Would you consider joining the Athletics Foundation today and encourage our student-athletes with your fi nancial support and attendance when the Bears compete on the playing fi elds and courts?”

--Diane Owens

The Mercer Athletics Foundation was created in 2007 as the fundrais-ing arm for Mercer University Athletics. Members of the Foundation annually set goals to raise funds which have been used to undertake such projects as hiring a full-time strength and conditioning coach, enhancing recruiting budgets, providing additional scholarships and to help increase salaries to attract and retain outstanding coaches.

The MAF has many ways by which individuals and businesses alike can become involved and help keep the Bears’ athletics program at the forefront.

Strength and ConditioningThe strength and conditioning program at Mercer has three primary goals. These goals are to

maximize athleticism, minimize injuries and increase mental/physical toughness. The way this

is accomplished is by primarily utilizing ground based, multi-joint, triple extension, explosive

exercises. Athletes will perform exercises of all types but focus is put on three main exercise

styles: Olympic lifting, power lifting and plyometrics. The goal is to try and replicate the

movements, velocities and forces that are experienced during competition of the athlete's sport.

Served by a professional full-time strength and conditioning coach as well as an assistant

coach, Mercer Athletics provides a full range of weight training and exercise equipment to

assist Mercer’s approximately 226 student-athletes in reaching their athletic potential through

strength training and conditioning.

Easily accessible from anywhere in the University Center, the equipment includes the following:

• three top of the line power lift full racks

• over 3,000 pounds of plates • a line of variable resistant machines

• three sets of Iron Grip dumbbells • fi ve free standing adjustable benches

BUILDINGContinuing a tradition of academic achievement, a record 60 percent of all student-athletes earned All-Academic status during the 2009-10 academic year. Lipscomb edged out Belmont, the seven-time winner of the All-Academic Trophy, to win its fi rst such trophy with close to 72 percent of its the student-athletes achieving All-Academic status with grade point averages of a 3.00, or better.

Several Bisons teams received national recognition for their success in the classroom. Both the men’s and women’s track & fi eld teams posted team GPAs among the top fi ve in the nation - the only school in the country to boast that distinction. Jacksonville’s women’s track team received their ninth straight USTFCCCA All-Academic honor. Lipscomb’s women’s basketball team posted the ninth best GPA in the country and the conference champion volleyball team led fi ve A-Sun schools in receiving an AVCA Team Academic Award.

The Stetson men’s tennis team led the nation with nine student-athletes earning the honor of Scholar Athlete from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. A total of fi ve A-Sun schools and 24 student-athletes received recogntion from the ITA. Stetson and Belmont joined only 16 other Division I schools considered an All-Academic squad in both men’s and women’s tennis.

For the fi rst time the NCAA released single-year APR for Division I head coaches in six sports dating back to 2003-04, the beginning of the program. All 11 A-Sun schools produced a coach who had a year of a perfect score of 1000 and the league produced a total of 25 seasons with scores of 1000. Seven of the conference’s men’s and women’s basketball recorded at least one score of 1000 and fi ve teams had a score of 1000 in 2008-09, the most recent year recorded by the NCAA.

WINNERSFour A-Sun teams received Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association All-Sports Trophies in recognition of their performances in NCAA postseason play. Lipscomb’s softball team, ETSU’s men’s tennis squad plus UNF’s men’s golf team and women’s tennis carried the conference to the third-highest total by any one conference.

Golf continued to boom in the conference as three league members on the women’s side advanced to NCAA play for the fi rst time in conference play. Women’s golf became the fi rst sport in the conference to produce three NCAA participants since baseball in 2003. At the NCAA Regionals, ETSU’s Nina Muehl opened with an 8-under 64, the single lowest round carded in all of Division I golf and became just the second golfer from the A-Sun to earn a spot in the NCAA Championships

The Ospreys’ men’s golf team spent the year ranked among the top programs in the country alongside ETSU. Both advanced to NCAA postseason play and the Ospreys made the nationals for the fi rst time as a conference member. Sophomore Sean Dale earned All-America honors and qualifi ed for the US Amateur, as did his teammates Kevin Alywin and Kevin Phelan. Phelan opened his summer by qualifying for the US Open at Pebble Beach. ETSU’s Rhys Enoch tied for the individual title at the NCAA East Regional and his play carried into summer as he made his second Palmer Cup team and advanced all the way to the quarterfi nals of the British Amateur.

Individual performances stood out on the diamond as FGCU’s Chris Sale became a consensus All-America en route to becoming the conference’s fourth fi rst-round pick in the last two years. ETSU’s Paul Hoilman contended for the national triple crown and burst onto the national scene by winning the fi rst-ever home run derby competition - contested at historic Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Neb. Mercer’s Jacob Tanis fi nished one RBI shy of the national lead in pacing the Bears back to the top of the A-Sun for the fi rst time in more than 25 years.

In softball, two hurlers established themselves among the best in the nation. Lipscomb’s Whitney Kiihnl and USC Upstate’s Morgan Childers each topped the 30-win mark - a fi rst for the conference. The two traded the national lead in ERA throughout the season and when the year came to a close, Kiihnl fi nished with the best mark in the nation with Childers taking a close second. Kiihnl and Childers ranked second and third in the country in fewest hits allowed per seven innings.

For the fi rst time in league history, the conference’s last remaining charter member, Mercer, hosted the General Shale Brick Basketball Championships. The hosts advanced to the fi nal of the men’s event setting up a standing-room-only event at the University Center against ETSU. In the end the Buccaneers won back-to-back titles. Jacksonville advanced to the NIT for the straight second year and provided the league’s fi rst win in the event since 1996 when Ben Smith connected on a game-winning 3-pointer in the fi nal seconds to stun top-seeded Arizona State.

On the women’s side ETSU became the third A-Sun school to win three straight titles, FGCU advanced to the WNIT for a third consecutive year and USC Upstate registered its fi rst 20-win season as a Divisioon I program.

FOR LIFEAlums from the Atlantic Sun, both recent and historic continued to excel at the highest levels. Within the span of three days, FGCU produced its fi rst two major league baseball players. Two pitchers of the Eagles’ 2008 A-Sun Championship squad, Casey Coleman and Sale, took their talents to Chicago as Coleman broke in with the Cubs and Sale soared through the White Sox system after spending less than two months in the minors. In late June, former Stetson All-American Chris Johnson returned to the Astros lineup and hit over .380 his fi rst two months as a regular.
