The Next Generation APA President Dr. Carol A. Bernstein’s July 2nd Psychiatric News message asks us to make our younger members needs a priority during the coming year. She plans to create a mentoring structure to spur interaction be-tween seasoned scientific leaders and early-career psychiatrists. Outreach that joins na-tional and academic leaders is stressed as a
means of networking and dissemination of APA information. The APA Membership Department is developing a New Mem-ber Contact Program which corresponds with Dr. Bernstein’s objective and aims to connect with new members, who are most often Members-In-Training and reinstating ECPs. Be sure to read Dr. Bernstein’s message about this important element of the Association.
Recruitment & Retention Affinity Programs
The Membership Department continues to field inquiries from mem-bers regarding the change in malpractice insurance provider endorse-ment. A second email notification blast was sent to members with updated information about American Professional Agency, Inc., pro-viding a link to a Frequency Asked Questions document.
Fellowship
Promotion for Fellowship continued with a 2nd email blast to eligible members on June 18th. A postcard mailing is scheduled for the week of July 26th to members without email addresses. Member with ap-plications needing letters of support are also contacted by their Membership Coordinator and a monthly email blast.
Member-In-Training to General Member Advancements
An email blast was sent on June 28th to 1,125 MITs who completed training between April and July of 2010. It included information about how they can easily advance to General Membership or retain their MIT status. We have received an impressive response from those members. Most have provided us with continuing training up-dates. A print mailing to 984 of these members who did respond to the email blast was sent out on July 15th.
An email reminder was sent on June 29th to 153 MITs who com-pleted training between January 2009 and March 2010. A print mailing to those who did not respond to this notice will be sent on July 23rd.
Membership Coordinators are now in the process of verifying training completion using the ACGME residency census for those MITs from whom we have verified licensure.
DUES RELIEF
All pending dues relief recom-mendations should be submit-ted to your Membership Coordi-nator for review by the APA Board of Trustees no later than Friday August 6th.
As a reminder, dues relief should be strictly limited to two consecutive years unless there are extenuating circumstances.
DB/SA Website Tips
Membership Website The DB/SA's website is continually updated with resources to assist DB/SA's with membership processing and promotions. A NEW Website Navigation Guide was created by Allison Moraske, Program Manager of the APA Ethics and DB/State Society Relations Department. This user friendly guide contains active links to frequently visited areas.
DON’T FORGET!!!
Billing Contracts should be completed and returned to the Membership Department no later than August 13th. Visit the website for individual DB dues rates. Contact Tony Desantis at [email protected] if you have questions.
Non-Centralized Billing Initiative
The Membership Department is excited to
offer again this year the Non-Centralized Bill-
ing DB Initiative. This initiative was intro-
duced last year as part of the “Save Our
Members” campaign designed specifically for
the NCB DB retention efforts and to work in
concert with the APA Drop Cycle. We ex-
pected it to do well, but no one could have
guessed how successful it would be. The full
support and partnership of the DBs along
with the diligence of the Membership Coor-
dinators was a winning combination.
For instance, Oregon Psychiatric Association
started with 18 potential drops and saved 17
members and the Greater Long Island Psychi-
atric Society had 130 potential drops and
was able to save 95 members. Solid evidence
that our coordinated efforts proved to be
beneficial in retaining our members.
This year, during the months of August, Sep-
tember, and October, Non-Centralized DBs
and their Membership Coordinators will
send out letters and email blasts to serve as
reminders to pay your dues. Also, they will
share drop payment report information to
remove those at-risks member from the drop
lists. It is our hope that this initiative will re-
port even bigger gains than last year.
APA members donated $7,247 to the New Orleans
Mission. These donations will help the mission con-
tinue to help homeless individuals with meals,
clothing ,shelter and job-training.
APA, Inc. our newly endorsed malpractice insurer is
also endorsed by the American Academy of Child &
Adolescent Psychiatry.
Advance registration ends on September 24th for
the 62nd 2010 APA Institute on Psychiatric Services.
The Preliminary program is available now online.
