For over three decades, John J. DeGioia has helped to define and strengthen Georgetown University as a premier institution for education and research. Since graduating from the University in 1979, he has served both as a senior administrator and as a faculty member. On July 1, 2001, he became Georgetown’s 48th president. As president, Dr. DeGioia is deeply committed to sustaining academic excellence at Georgetown. He has helped to recruit intellectual leaders to the faculty and secured substantial funding for scholarly research and academic programs. Under Dr. DeGioia’s leadership, the University completed in December 2003 the largest fund-raising effort in University history, the Third Century Campaign. The $1 billion capital campaign benefited Georgetown’s Main, Medical, and Law Center campuses to secure endowment funds for curriculum and faculty support, increase student financial aid, and build and renovate facilities. In 2002-2003, Dr. DeGioia oversaw the largest expansion of campus facilities, with the

Southwest Quadrangle - a one million square-foot complex of student housing; study, seminar and music rooms; and a new Jesuit Community Residence - at the forefront. Dr. DeGioia addresses broader issues in higher education as a Chair of the Board of Directors of Campus Compact and of the Forum for the Future of Higher Education. He also serves as a member of the Board of Directors for the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities; the Board of Directors for the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities; the Executive Committee of the Council on Competitiveness; the Business-Higher Education Forum; the Steering Committee of the Talloires Network; the Big East Conference Executive Committee; and is a Commissioner on the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics. To prepare young people for leadership roles in the global community, Dr. DeGioia has expanded opportunities for intercultural and interreligious dialogue, welcomed world leaders to campus, and convened international conferences to address challenging issues. He represents Georgetown at the World Economic Forum, the Council on Foreign Relations, and the U.S. National Commission for UNESCO, where he recently served as Chair of the Education Committee. Dr. DeGioia has enhanced Georgetown’s relationship with the many political, cultural, corporate, and economic resources of Washington, D.C. He serves on the Greater Washington Board of Trade and the Federal City Council. Dr. DeGioia is

also a strong supporter of Georgetown’s social justice initiatives that seek to improve opportunities for Washington’s underserved neighborhoods. As the first lay president of a Jesuit university, Dr. DeGioia places special emphasis on sustaining and strengthening Georgetown’s Catholic and Jesuit identity and its responsibility to serve as a voice and an instrument for justice. He has also been a strong advocate for inter-religious dialogue. He is a member of the Order of Malta, a lay religious order of the Roman Catholic Church dedicated to serving the sick and the poor. Dr. DeGioia is a Professorial Lecturer in the Department of Philosophy. He earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Georgetown University in 1979 and his PhD in Philosophy from the University in 1995. He has most recently taught “Ethics and Global Development,” “Human Rights: A Culture in Crisis,” and a seminar on “Ways of Knowing.” Prior to his appointment as president, Dr. DeGioia held a variety of senior administrative positions at Georgetown, including senior vice president, responsible for university-wide operations, and dean of student affairs. In 2004, he was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Academia from the Sons of Italy. And he was named a Washingtonian of the Year by The Washingtonian magazine in 2008. Dr. DeGioia was raised in Orange, Connecticut, and Hanford, California. He and his wife, Theresa Miller DeGioia, a Georgetown alumna, and their son, John Thomas, live in Washington, D.C.

Daniel R. Porterfield, Ph.D.Senior Vice-President for Strategic Development

Daniel R. Porterfield, Ph.D. (C’83) serves as Senior Vice President for Strategic Development and as Assistant Professor of English. Porterfield has played an oversight role with Athletics for the past seven years, including serving as Interim Athletics Director in 2009-10, chairing the search process that recruited current Athletics Director Lee E. Reed to the Francis X. Rienzo Chair of

Athletics at Georgetown, and strengthening student-athlete leadership opportunities. Porterfield has served as a senior leader at Georgetown for more than 13 years. As senior vice president for strategic development, he leads university initiatives in government relations, social impact strategy, communications, branding, and new project development. In 2010-11, he is leading a strategic planning process to enhance the scope and impact of the University’s Center for Social Justice. An English professor who teaches literature courses dealing with human rights, education and social justice, he is the recipient of the 2003 Dorothy M. Brown Award for outstanding service to students, the 2008 Edward B. Bunn, S.J. Award for Faculty Excellence in Georgetown College, and the 2010 Faculty of the Year Award from the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service.

Porterfield is a 1983 graduate of Georgetown College and was a recipient of a Rhodes Scholarship and a Mellon Fellowship in the Humanities. He earned his Ph.D. degree at The City University of New York Graduate Center. Prior to coming to Georgetown in 1997, he served for four years as a senior aide to Health and Human Services Secretary Donna E. Shalala. In the 1980’s Dr. Porterfield founded Georgetown University’s D.C. Schools Project and After School Kids Program, two on-going social justice projects that allow several hundred students a year to work with immigrant children and at-risk youth. He now serves on the board of directors of The Cristo Rey Network, Don Bosco Cristo Rey High School, and Jesuit Refugee Service/USA. Dr. Porterfield is married to Karen A. Herrling (C ‘84, L ‘90). They have three children and live on campus in faculty housing.

Lee Reed was named the 17th director of athletics (Francis X. Rienzo chair) at Georgetown University in April 2010. As director of athletics, Reed will oversee the operations of all Georgetown University intercollegiate athletics programs, which includes 29 sports and more than 750 student-athletes Reed takes over for Daniel R. Porterfield, Ph.D., Georgetown’s senior vice-president for strategic development who served as interim director of athletics during the 2009-10 academic year. Reed comes to Georgetown after serving as the director of athletics at Cleveland State University in Ohio for eight years. A former basketball standout at Cleveland State, he joined the Vikings Athletics Department in the summer of 2002. “Lee is committed to educational excellence and competitive success and I am confident that with his leadership we will continue to recruit and support first-rate coaches and student-athletes who maintain the University’s tradition of academic and athletic success,’ Georgetown University President John J. DeGioia said. “This has been a thorough search process and we look forward to the contributions he will make to our athletics program and the lives of our student-athletes.” Under Reed’s leadership the Viking athletics program moved into the upper ranks of the Horizon League and was recognized as one of the top programs in the state of Ohio. Reed oversaw a department that captured 11 Horizon League Championships, as well as six runner-up finishes in the last three years. In addition, Cleveland State University has been represented at the NCAA Championship 15 times during that span. Reed’s plan and vision led the Vikings to claim the James J. McCafferty Trophy during the 2007-08 season, an honor recognizing the Horizon League’s all-sport champion. It was the first

time that CSU captured the award. CSU won the league’s Men’s All-Sports Award, while the Vikings finished third in the Women’s All-Sports Award. The Vikings, who had never finished higher than fifth place in the McCafferty standings, became just the fourth current Horizon League school to win the award. Reed is well-respected nationally, having represented the Horizon League on the NCAA Management Council and as the president of the NCAA I-AAA Athletic Director’s Association in 2007-08. He is also a member of the NCAA Basketball Academic Enhancement Group, a working group composed of presidents, chancellors, head coaches, commissioners, athletic directors and faculty athletic representatives, which was established to develop strategies to enhance the academic performance and graduation rates of NCAA Division I men’s basketball. Reed has served as chairman of the John McLendon Memorial Minority Postgraduate Scholarship Awards committee, which is operated through NACDA, Reed also served

as a member of the Board of Directors of the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission. In March of 2005, he was named one of the 50 Most Powerful African-Americans in Sports by Black Enterprise magazine. Reed rejoined the Vikings after spending the previous seven years (1995-02) at Eastern Michigan University, the last four as associate athletic director for internal affairs. As associate athletic director, Reed oversaw all internal affairs of the department, including compliance, operations and facilities. He had administrative oversight for seven Olympic sports, coordinating fund raising, budget development and the hiring and evaluation of coaches. He administered the athletic department’s $3.5 million grant-in-aid budget that covered 21 sports. A four-year letterman in men’s basketball at Cleveland State, Reed played on teams that compiled a 61-47 mark, serving as team captain for the 1982-83 season. Reed then served as an assistant men’s basketball coach at the University of New Mexico from 1984-86. He later received a master’s degree in sports administration from UNM in 1994.

T he 2010 season marks the fifth campaign on the Hilltop for head coach Brian Wiese. Last year, the

Hoyas had an outstanding season finishing fourth in the BIG EAST’s Blue Division with an overall record of 9-8-2 and earning a berth in the BIG EAST Tournament. Georgetown also defeated its first ranked opponent under Wiese, downing No. 19 UCLA 2-0. Wiese continued to build a Hoya team that qualified for its third-consecutive BIG EAST Tournament after a five-year drought. Following his first season in 2006, Wiese and his staff brought in one of the biggest recruiting classes in school history as the Hoyas welcomed 11 newcomers to the program. The Hoyas have had continued success in recruiting bringing in players ranked among the top 100 in the nation two years in a row. Wiese earned his first collegiate head coaching job at Georgetown in March 2006 after a successful stint as the associate head coach at the University of Notre Dame. From 1996-2005, Wiese worked under nationally-recognized coach Bobby Clark for five seasons at Stanford University and then for five more at Notre Dame. In those 10 seasons, the teams posted a combined record of 136-48-25, advanced to nine-straight NCAA Tournaments and made one trip to the championship match. Wiese has worked with 11 All-Americans and eight

Academic All-America selections during his career as well as four players who were candidates for the Missouri Athletic Club’s Hermann Trophy, recognizing the Division I National Player of the Year. Wiese joined Notre Dame as an assistant in 2001 and was promoted to associate head coach in 2005. During his time with the Irish, he helped guide the team to five NCAA Tournament appearances (reaching the Sweet 16 in 2003 and 2005), to the 2003 BIG EAST Tournament title and the 2004 BIG EAST regular season title. He was named to CollegeSoccerNews.com’s Top Assistant Coaches List in 2001 and was part of the BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year on two occasions (2001 and 2003). Prior to his stint at Notre Dame, Wiese spent five years (1996-2001) as an assistant coach at Stanford University. The Cardinal posted a 71-21-12 record during that time and made four NCAA Tournament appearances. The team posted a 10-4-4 record in 1996, its first winning season in four years, was ranked second in the country in 1997 when they went 13-5-2 and finished the 1998 season No. 2 in the country after reaching the NCAA title game and finishing 18-5-2. In 2000, Stanford was ranked No. 1 in the country during the season, finished 18-3-1 overall

and advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. That year, the Cardinal posted a 0.44 goals-against average, the best in the country, and were second in the country with 68 goals scored. During his time at Stanford, Wiese earned a master’s of science degree in product design (mechanical engineering) in 1998. A 1995 graduate of Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, Wiese earned a bachelor of arts in mechanical engineering. A goalkeeper, he was a three-time All-Ivy League selection, two-time Academic All-Ivy League honoree, was named the team’s most valuable player in 1993 and captained the team as a senior. Wiese played professionally briefly for the Bulawayo Highlanders in Zimbabwe. He began his coaching career in 1995, serving as the head coach of the Upper Valley Lightning boys U-15 club team in New Hampshire. Following that, he moved out west, taking over as the head coach of the Del Mar (San Diego) Tsunami girls U-17 club team from 1995-96. Wiese and his wife Becky have three children Morgan (9), Ted (7) and Maya (5).

Zach Samol will be roaming the Hoya sidelines for the fifth season in 2010. He is no stranger to success as he has helped both Yale University and Boston College to league titles and NCAA Tournament appearances. Prior to joining the coaching staff at Georgetown, Samol spent 2002-05 as an assistant coach at Yale University. The Longmeadow, Mass., native helped guide the team to its first Ivy League Title since 1991 and an appearance in the 2005 NCAA Tournament. From the summer of 2000 through the summer of 2002, Samol was an assistant coach at Boston College and played an integral role in helping the Eagles to the BIG EAST Championship in 2000 and consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances in 2000 and 2001. Samol played his collegiate soccer at Dartmouth College, graduating in 1998 and was a 1997 All-Ivy League selection before earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology. Following his graduation, Samol played professionally from 1998-2003 with the Connecticut Wolves (A-League), the Cape Cod Crusaders (D-3 Pro League), the Boston Bulldogs (A-League) and the Western Mass Pioneers (D-3 Pro League), where he concluded his pro career. Samol, who holds a USSF “B” National Coaching License, is a resident of Washington, D.C., and is also the head coach of the Potomac U.S. Soccer Development Academy U-17/18 team.

brian Gill is in his first season on the Hilltop coming to Georgetown from Seattle University. He will serve as the recruiting coordinator helping with all aspects of the program. Gill served as the Redhawks’ goalkeeper’s coach for one season helping build the program which transitioned from Division II to Division I in 2009. Seattle finished the season in the top four in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation during the regular season. At Seattle he was involved in all facets of the program including coaching, recruiting, film and scouting. Additionally, he was a staff coach with both Washington Premier and Crossfire Premier Soccer Clubs. He was the goalkeeper coach at Lafayette College in Easton, Pa., for two seasons prior as the Leopards posted 17 shutouts and had a goals-against average of under one goal per game. Previously, Gill spent three seasons as the goalkeeper coach at his alma mater Rider University in Lawrenceville, N.J., where he also assisted with scouting and recruiting. Gill was a two-time team MVP at Rider, helping the team reach the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) championship game in 2000 and 2003. He also played for the Brooklyn Knights of the USL’s Premier Development League from 2001 to 2003. Gill has an NSCAA National Diploma, a National Goalkeepers Diploma and a USSF D License. Gill spent five seasons on the coaching staff of MatchFit Academy FC and two years as an assistant coach and goalie trainer for the New Jersey Olympic Development Program (ODP). He graduated magna cum laude from Rider with a degree in secondary education and history. He is working towards his master’s degree in sport administration and leadership.

Andrew quinn joins the Georgetown staff as a volunteer assistant coach, he comes to the Hilltop with playing experience at both the Division I level and in the MLS. Quinn will work primarily with the goalkeepers. Quinn was added to the D.C. United roster after the 2010 preseason but did not see game action after suffering a knee injury early in the year. In his four-year career at the University of Notre Dame, Quinn played in 37 career games with the Irish posting 33 starts. He had nine shutouts and 119 saves to his credit. During his time at Notre Dame, the Irish won a pair of BIG EAST titles and went to four-consecutive NCAA Tournaments. After redshirting as a freshman, Quinn moved into the rotation as a redshirt senior appearing and starting in 16 games before suffering a season-ending injury against Georgetown. During his fifth year, the Silver Spring, Md., native started 12 games recording 37 saves. He was a two-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star. Quinn graduated in 2010 with a degree in psychology and sociology. The local product starred at DeMatha Catholic High School starting in goal for three seasons and earning four varsity letters. He led the squad to two-consecutive WCAC Championships and posted three-consecutive seasons with 10 shutouts. DeMatha was nationally-ranked for three seasons and ranked No.1 in the nation in 2004 after going undefeated. Quinn was a three-time All-Conference honoree. Quinn resides in Silver Spring, Md.

Depth will make a difference as the Hoyas battle five NCAA Tournament teams in non-conference play and playing in the incredibly talented BIG EAST Conference. Leading the way on offense will be a number of upperclassmen forwards. The forwards lost no seniors to graduation and enter the season with a balanced attack. Senior captain Jose Colchao will return after starting all 19 games last season. Colchao led the Hoyas in 2009 with four goals and five assists for 13 points. Joining Colchao up front will be a combination of classmate Chandler Diggs, junior Uche Onyeador and sophomore Andy Riemer. Diggs was Georgetown’s third-leading scorer a season ago with four goals and two assists. He split time starting with Onyeador who had two goals and one assist on the year for five points. The one-two punch of Colchao and his cohorts up front was an effective attack, but when looking for a spark late in the game the coaching staff looked to rookie Riemer to make a quick impact. Riemer didn’t disappoint, posting four goals and one assist on the season for nine points all coming in reserve. Senior Tom St. George looks to break into the rotation after three years working hard in practice. St. George has the ability to play both forward and midfield and is a smart player who can contribute in reserve and is familiar with the system. Joining him looking to make an impact is sophomore Mark Luxama. As a freshman, Luxama didn’t see game action but played a key role in practice. The staff is looking for him to break into the rotation

this season. Keegan Carter, Gabe Padilla and Justin Moo Young round out a group of players that may see time at either forward or midfield. All three freshmen will have to play their way into minutes on the pitch, but come from outstanding programs making one of the deepest squads the Hoyas have seen in years. In the midfield, the Hoyas will welcome back seniors Rob Burnett and Seth C’deBaca as well as sophomore Ian Christianson. Burnett and C’deBaca are both veteran midfielders with C’deBaca running the outside and Burnett controlling the middle. C’deBaca was last season’s second-leading scorer with three goals and a team-high five assists for 11 points. Burnett posted two assists and contributed on defense as well rotating back when necessary. Christianson came to the Hilltop as a highly-touted recruit and didn’t disappoint. As a freshman he had one goal in 13 games after suffering a knee injury mid-way through the year. Christianson’s impact was felt in the middle as he served as a starting point for a number of goals and was able to contribute on the defensive end. Joining this group and looking to fill the spot left by graduate Scott Larrabee, is senior transfer Henry Tembon. The London, England, native transferred to Georgetown for his final year of eligibility. Tembon spent a year playing at the University of Virginia and is expected to see minutes in the middle. Also joining the midfield are freshmen Steve Neumann and Joey Dillon. Neumann is a true midfielder who will be working to

break into the rotation in a very deep and talented group. Dillon can play in the midfield or on defense; the coaching staff sees him as a player who can move around on the pitch to help out wherever necessary. Georgetown’s defense took the biggest hit due to graduation with the loss of All-BIG EAST defender Len Coleman and Mark Zeman, a mainstay in the lineup since his freshman season. The coaching staff will be looking to fill a central defender role, especially a student-athlete who can control headers as well as someone to take corner kicks. Leading the way will be senior co-captain Alex Verdi and classmate Ibu Otegbeye. Both have played significant minutes in their careers and have the ability to run the defensive unit. Verdi started in all 19 games last year and got into the act on offense with one goal and two assists to his credit. Otegbeye returned from injury as a sophomore to start in 16 games last season with one assist. Looking to fill the two vacant positions is senior Ben Slingerland as well as sophomore Jimmy Nealis and Tommy Muller. Slingerland is a tall defender that saw limited action last year, but has the ability to fill the middle and posted his first career start in 2009. Muller and Nealis both saw significant time as rookies coming in as reserves. Nealis appeared in all 19 games with seven starts on defense. He is an incredibly quick player who can move up the field with the ball. Nealis had two goals and as many assists as a freshman. Muller played in eight games with three starts after injury kept him off of the pitch for much of the season. He tallied one assist and is expected to play a larger role as a sophomore. Nick Van Hollen and Ted Helfrich both come in as freshmen and may be forced to see game action. Both come from solid soccer backgrounds and will be expected to be ready in a group with a lot of movement from last season.

In the net, it will be keeper by committee once again with three talented returners as well as one of the top-ranked freshmen in the nation according to topdrawersoccer.com. Senior co-captain Matthew Brutto and classmate Mark Wilber will once again split time as the coaching staff will have the luxury to play the keeper that fits the game. This tactic has worked well with the two goalkeepers combining for 18 shutouts over the past two seasons. Brutto is a more tactical player who has success against organized squads. He runs the squad from his position in back and has the ability to see plays develop. Brutto posted three shutouts with 39 saves to his credit. He appeared in nine games starting in seven after a knee injury took him out of half the season. Wilber started 11 contests for the Hoyas as a junior with five shutouts and 36 saves. He is an incredibly athletic keeper who can come up with big saves when necessary. The tall goalkeeper suffered a concussion last year that forced him out for a number of games but he is back at 100 percent and will see action in the net. Rounding out the four-man corps are junior Erik Garciamendez and freshman Keon Parsa. Garciamendez played in one game last season after a series of injuries forced him to step up. While he will still be played behind Wilber and Brutto, the junior has the ability to come in and make stops. Parsa comes to the Hilltop with a solid soccer resume but will have to learn the Georgetown system before breaking into the rotation. To the casual observer, the Hoyas look to be quite similar to last year’s squad which went to the BIG EAST Tournament. However, underneath the surface there has been movement and a number of returners enter the season older and wiser. With an incredibly veteran group these Hoyas have the ability, poise and leadership to make an impact in 2010.

Veteran leadership will be the key for the 2010 Georgetown University men’s soccer team. A core of 11 seniors heads up the talented group which returns eight starters from last year’s team. Combining this experience with proven juniors, sophomores who saw action last season and an exceptional freshman class will make for one of the deepest squads Head Coach brian Wiese has seen in his time on the Hilltop.

Did you know Tom St. George is the Platoon Commander for the George Washington University Navy ROTC? He runs the battalion consisting of students from Georgetown and Howard University. St. George has been a member for four years and worked his way up to platoon commander. The commitment requires drill three mornings a week as well as an evening session. He balances NROTC, soccer and academics.

Did you know Henry Tembon was born in London, England and lived there until he was 11? His family is English, but a job opportunity brought the family to the United States. While he has made the transition to living in America he still holds a soccer allegiance for his home country.

Did you know Ben Slingerland spent this past summer working at the Nike Headquarters in Beaverton, Ore.? Slingerland received the opportunity through the summer work program which brings in 90 summer interns out of more than 10,000 applicants. Besides working with Nike’s soccer marketing team, Slingerland took advantage of the state-of-the-art workout facilities and all that Nike had to offer. He was also fortunate to meet Tim Tebow and watch Lebron James in a closed practice, just two of countless celebrity sightings.

GOALS UNLIMITEDGoals Unlimited, a part of Hoyas Unlimited, is an organization of alumni, parents, and friends of Georgetown Men’s Soccer whose primary purpose is to promote a heightened awareness of and an active interest in the Georgetown University Men’s Soccer program. Members have been actively involved in raising funds to supplement the budget and provide opportunities to the soccer program through annual, current-use donations. In the 2009-10 school year, Goals Unlimited raised $45,000 from 91 donors. In addition, members receive newsletters and invitations to club events each year. The Athletics Compliance Office coordinates the athletics compliance efforts of Georgetown University and acts as a resource and solution center concerning NCAA regulations and compliance issues. The 2010-11 academic year will be the 32nd in the history of The BIG EAST Conference as the unique consortium marches on competing at the highest level with integrity and sportsmanship. The BIG EAST has gone through membership changes since its birth, but the 2010-11 year will mark the conference’s sixth straight with the same 16-member group, the nation’s largest Division I-A conference. The BIG EAST Conference’s goals have always been the same. The outstanding performances of the student-athletes at BIG EAST schools are evidence of the league’s proud tradition of success. The league has always been able to boast that many of its best students are also its best athletes. The 2009-10 year was no different. Seven BIG EAST student-athletes were named NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winners.

Maya Moore, Connecticut’s women’s basketball standout, won the NCAA Honda-Broderick Award as the nation’s top female student-athlete. She also was named the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American of the Year for women’s basketball. Moore was the fifth BIG EAST women’s student-athlete to win the Honda-Broderick Award. In the athletic arena, BIG EAST student-athletes again enjoyed success on the national stage. The Connecticut women’s basketball team won its second straight national championship and its seventh overall crown. The Villanova women’s cross country team also won the NCAA title. The Notre Dame women’s soccer team reached the NCAA College Cup for the second straight year. The Syracuse women’s lacrosse squad reached the Final Four. On the men’s side, West Virginia’s basketball team became the BIG EAST’s 16th team to reach the NCAA Final Four and won the conference’s academic achievement award. The Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team advanced to the NCAA championship game. Individually, three BIG EAST student-athletes won NCAA titles. Cincinnati’s Josh Schneider won the 50 freestyle in men’s swimming. In track, Louisville’s D’Ana McCarty repeated as the NCAA indoor winner in the weight throw. Louisville’s Matt Hughes won the 3,000 steeplechase. Another Cardinal, Austen Childs, was the national runner-up in men’s tennis singles. BIG EAST football maintained its national

profile as a competitively balanced group. Cincinnati won its second straight league championship in 2009 and compiled an undefeated regular season.

The Bearcats finished third in the final Bowl Championship Series standings. Six of the league’s eight squads went to bowl games and helped the BIG EAST post a 4-2 bowl record. Rutgers, one of the bowl winners, also was recognized for having the nation’s highest NCAA APR rating, which measures academic success. The BIG EAST has continued to produce student-athletes who are at the forefront of athletic and academic achievement. In 2009-10, 22 BIG EAST players from 10 schools were chosen to their respective ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Teams. Over 400 student-athletes have earned academic all-America honors. The BIG EAST became the nation’s largest Division I-A conference in 2005-06 when five new members began competing. The new schools

were: University of Cincinnati, DePaul University, University of Louisville, Marquette University and the University of South Florida. BIG EAST institutions reside in nine of the nation’s top 35 largest media markets, including New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Tampa, Pittsburgh, Hartford, Cincinnati and Milwaukee. With its newest members, BIG EAST markets contain almost one-fourth of all television households in the U.S. Since opening its doors in 1979, the league has won 28 national championships in six different sports and 128 student-athletes have won individual national titles. In 2003-04, Connecticut became the first school in NCAA history to win the men’s and women’s NCAA basketball titles in the same season. In ’02-03, the BIG EAST became the first conference in NCAA history to win the men’s and women’s titles in the same year when the Syracuse men and the Connecticut women captured their respective national championships. In men’s basketball, BIG EAST squads have won three of the last 12 NCAA championships. BIG EAST women’s teams have taken seven of the last 11 NCAA titles. Proactive movement has been a signature strategy for the conference that was born in 1979. The BIG EAST continually turns challenges into opportunities to become stronger. In 2009-10, the BIG EAST added men’s lacrosse to its growing list of sports, which increased its total to 24 sport championships.

The BIG EAST became a reality on May 31, 1979, following a meeting of athletic directors from Providence College, St. John’s, Georgetown and Syracuse universities. Seton Hall, Connecticut and Boston College completed the original seven school alliance. While the membership has both increased and changed, the focus of the BIG EAST has not wavered. The conference reflects a tradition of broad based programs, led by administrators and coaches who place a constant emphasis on academic integrity. Its student athletes own significantly high graduation rates and their record of scholastic achievement notably show a balance between intercollegiate athletics and academics. Any successful organization has had the good fortune to have outstanding leadership. The BIG EAST primarily was the brainchild of Dave Gavitt, who was the conference’s first Commissioner. Michael Tranghese, the league’s first full-time employee, and for 11 years the associate to Gavitt, became Commissioner in 1990. In his first year, he administered the formation of The BIG EAST

Football Conference. In 2009-10, the BIG EAST had one significant change. Tranghese stepped down from his position on June 30, 2009. John Marinatto, who had served as senior associate commissioner, moved into the Commissioner’s chair and continued to steer the conference on its path of success. The league has long been considered a leader in innovative concepts in promotion and publicity, particularly regarding television. Those efforts have resulted in unparalleled visibility for BIG EAST student athletes. The conference has enjoyed long-standing relationships with CBS, ESPN, Inc. and ABC. BIG EAST men’s basketball games are regular sellouts at campus and major public arenas, including the annual men’s BIG EAST Championship in Madison Square Garden. The women’s basketball championship has led all conferences in attendance for the past seven years. Attendance figures also are significant in soccer and baseball. More than 575 BIG EAST student-athletes have earned all America recognition and dozens have won individual NCAA national championships. The BIG EAST has been well represented in U.S. or foreign national and Olympic teams. Several athletes earned gold medals. The BIG EAST has its headquarters in Providence where the conference administers to more than 5,500 student-athletes.

The 2010-11 academic year will be the 32nd in the history of The bIG EAST Conference as the unique consortium marches on competing at the highest level with integrity and sportsmanship.
