Legend of the Phoenix Throughout history there is told the legend of the rare and remarkable Phoe-nix, a crimson and gold bird that lived 500 years. It was sleek, swift and strong - the most marvelous bird ever created by human imagination. At the end of its life, with death approaching, it built a nest in an oak tree and was consumed in flames ignited by the sun. From the ashes emerged the next Phoenix - reborn and renewed, with strength forged in fire. Fire, too, has shaped the history of Elon University. The disastrous fire of 1923 all but destroyed Elon. Gone were Main Building, college records, class-rooms, the library and the chapel. But within days of the fire, Elon trustees set

in motion the plan for Elon to rise from the ashes, stronger than ever. The Phoenix is a powerful leader and an emblem of immortality. It is a perfect symbol for a school that is constantly renewing and recreating itself. The Elon motto, Numen Lumen, embraces intellectual and spiritual light. And so too, throughout history, the Phoe-nix has served as a symbol of light and knowledge. The Phoenix is timeless and unique. It perfectly describes an athletics program and an institution that are rising to new levels of excellence. There is only one Phoenix. There is only one Elon. Catch the Fire!

Phoenix Community Events The Elon softball team in committed to making a difference in its community as well as on the diamond. Last year, members of the team volunteered their time to help up-and-coming softball players develop their softball skills, teach fifth-graders on Education Day with the Phoenix, and help local youth and com-munity members in a variety of ways. Through all of their work, they hope to leave a positive mark in the Elon community.

Camps The Elon softball team hosts camps with local and national players of all levels from ages 7-17. The players coach the campers on hitting, pitching and catching.

Education Day The softball team has assisted with “Education Day with the Phoenix” a pro-gram that welcomes students from local elementary schools to the Elon campus for educational activities and a women’s basketball game after lunch. The team helps teach the visiting students lessons in math, science and geography.

Habitat for Humanity Re-Store The Phoenix used one of its Friday afternoons to volunteer at the Re-Store, an area furniture store associated with Habitat for Humanity that refurbishes and sells used furniture. Part of the profits go towards Elon’s chapter of Habitat for Humanity. While there, the team assisted with cleaning, selling and taking inven-tory of the items that have been donated.

Elon Fall Festival Several players, along with Coach Bo-cock, volunteered at the Elon Elementary School Fall Festival. The student-athletes worked with different events to ensure that the festival ran smoothly. Tomeka Watson and Coach Bocock manned the pony rides, a festival favorite. Kari Pervell helped sell tickets at the front gates, while Carly MacDougall worked the bounce house.

Color Me Phoenix ‘Color Me Phoenix’ is the activity that took place at the Elon vs. The Citadel football game. Among other activities, children were invited to color a picture of the Phoenix mascot and enter their art into a contest. The Elon softball team helped set up and manage the event.

Academic Excellence• Elon University is a dynamic private comprehensive university known for excellent arts and sciences along with outstanding professional programs. The Education Trust recognizes Elon for excellence in freshman retention and outstanding graduation rates.

• Elon was named the nation’s #1 “School to Watch” by U.S. News & World Report in the magazine’s 2010 “America’s Best Colleges” guide. The 77 colleges and universities on the list are noted as “schools everyone should be watching.”

• U.S. News & World Report also ranks Elon #2 among 117 Southern master’s-level universities and among the top universities in the nation in these “Programs to Look For” categories: first-year experiences, study abroad, internships, undergradu-ate research/creative projects, learning communities, service learning and senior capstone. No other school in the nation received so many top rankings.

• Elon consistently earns top ratings in the annual National Survey of Student Engagement on each of the five benchmarks of excellence: - level of academic challenge - active and collaborative learning - student-faculty interaction - enriching educational experiences - supportive campus environment

• Elon offers 50+ majors in four schools and has a total of 4,995 undergraduate and 671 graduate students. The average class size is 21 with an overall student to faculty ratio of 13 to 1.

Affordability• Elon offers a top-value education by every measure: in 2009, both Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine and The Princeton Review named Elon one of the nations’s top 50 “best value” private universities. The 2009 edition of Fiske Guide to Colleges named Elon a “best buy” university, based on academic quality and reasonable cost.

• Elon is one of the nation’s top seven best values for students who want to attend a university with outstanding academics at an affordable cost, according to Bruce G. Hammond, former managing editor of the Fiske Guide to Colleges, in an article on Reader’sDigest.com

Academic Support• The Elon University Athletic Department is proactive in ensuring the academic success of all student-athletes from their recruiting visit through graduation. Integral components of academic support for athletics include the academic enhancement program, registra-tion services, tutorial services, travel notices, recruiting visits, laptops and life skills.

• All freshmen and select upperclassmen participate in the Academic Enhancement Program. All student-athletes in AEP meet with their assigned academic coordinator each week to discuss academic progress and concerns. In addition to weekly meetings, student-athletes in AEP are required to complete monitored study hours. To accom-modate class and practice schedules, both daytime and nighttime options are avail-able to complete monitored study hours.

• In addition to the academic support provided by Elon Athletics, programs are also in place to promote and enhance the student-athlete experience. Programs and speakers address topics such as freshman transition issues, health and wellness, and career/graduate school preparation. The Student-Athlete Advisory Council is an organization for student-athletes, run by student-athletes, to provide an opportunity to serve the athletic, Elon and greater Burlington communities.

Head softball coach Patti Raduenz led the 2009 Phoenix to a 15-32 record that included a win over Michigan State. The team also earned a series win over Southern Conference foe Furman. Raduenz sat down to discuss the upcoming season, her class of newcomers and her coaching staff.

What do you expect from your team in 2010?

This game is not bound by time, only by the limits we place on ourselves. I’m looking forward to seeing a team that does not know how to quit and a team that keeps its foot on the gas pedal and continues to believe in the power of positive thinking.

How important is it for your underclassmen to step up this season, especially with no seniors on the team?

There is no doubt we are a young team. Out of that youth comes a lot of energy and eagerness to be the best we can be.

You have a junior college transfer on the team in Emerald Graham. What do you think the value is to having someone with post-high school playing experience?

Emerald is just what her name pictures, a gem. Her experience in collegiate and postseason play brings us the leadership and consistency an experienced player possesses.

With two tournaments at home this year, how important is a home field advantage to your team?

Playing at home on familiar ground and in front of your fan base is definitely an advantage. The old saying of ‘nobody comes into our house and expects an easy win’ will ring true this season. The home games also allow our fans the opportunity to help supply us with that much needed

home energy and sense of pride. As for the travel, softball plays 56 games in a season. Home games allow us to minimize missed classes and continue to focus on academics.

You have a lot of new faces on the team this year. What can fans expect to see from the newcomers?

Our newcomers are very talented and they fit well with our returners. We’ll have a nice balance of power and speed. The team chemistry is really coming together and the newcomers have transitioned well into their roles.

What is the attitude of the team this year?

This team is definitely all fired up, which happens to be our team motto. As we look into this season, we’ll continue to focus on the part of the game that we can control - our attitude.

Plans are in the works for a new softball facility. How beneficial would that be to the program?

Recruiting is one of the most important aspect, to winning championships. Elon is a fantastic learning community with awesome opportunities for its students. Of course, as the university finalizes the plans for the new facility and the dream is built, it would be a welcome benefit to assist in recruiting and continually improve the student-athlete experience.

You had to replace a lot of power in the lineup this year. Who can people expect

to help fill the void left by Melanie Helterbran, Brandi Jones and Patti Weber?

Brandi, Patti and Melanie all had

great careers with Elon and they will be missed. We’re very excited with the leadership and work ethic of our returners. I can’t say enough about the selflessness and talent of the newcomers. I think Brandi, Patti and Melanie will all be proud of the level of play they will see from these folks.

You have two new coaches this year. How have they transitioned?

I’m a big believer that you surround yourself with positive people and positive events are inevitable. Coach [Kathy] Bocock embodies what it means to be a great teammate. She is extremely knowledgeable and her experience in college athletics is invaluable. When Coach Bocock was a volunteer on my staff two years ago, I knew that if we ever had an opening she would be the complete replacement. Coach [Jessica] Kohut brings organization, passion and enthusiasm. She has really impressed me with her thorough pitching workouts and her dedication to recruiting. Together, they are an excellent staff that complement each other well and bring me the support and dedication all head coaches need.

“I am looking forward to seeing a team that does not know how to quit and a team that keeps its foot on the gas pedal and continues to believe in the power of positive thinking.”

- Head Coach Patti Raduenz

The academic climate of the campus has been strengthened through major investments in faculty development, library resources, honors and fellows programs for outstanding students, and Elon’s top-ranked programs in study

abroad, undergraduate research, volunteer service, and leadership education. In 2001 Elon College became Elon University, and the NewCentury@Elon strategic plan was developed under President Lambert’s leadership. He directed the establishment of Elon College, the College of Arts and Sciences and both the School of Communications and the School of Education that same year. In 2006, Dr. Lambert led the drive to open the Elon University School of Law in downtown Greensboro, North Carolina. New facilities constructed during President Lambert’s tenure include Carol Grotnes Belk Library, Rhodes Stadium, Belk Track and White Field, the six-building Academic Village, Ernest A. Koury Sr. Business Center, Ellington Health Center, The Oaks residence hall complex, Colonnades Dining Hall and the Colonnades residence halls, and several new residence halls and a commons building in Danieley Center. The university has expanded to include the 75-acre South Campus. President Lambert has assumed a number of leadership roles regionally and nationally, serving on the national and North Carolina boards of Campus Compact and as a founding board member

and president’s council chair of Project Pericles, a national organization that encourages students to become civically engaged in their communities. As a result, Elon has twice been named one of the nation’s top universities for community service in the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. President Lambert has provided leadership on athletics issues, serving as a member of the NCAA Presidential Task Force on the Future of Division I Athletics and chairing the NCAA Committee on Athletics Certification. In 2008 Dr. Lambert was appointed to the Commission on Effective Leadership by the American Council on Education and also to the North Carolina Higher Education Civic Education Study Commission. In 2009, he was named a director of the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U), which comprises more than 1,150 public and private colleges and universities of every type and size. Lambert has a bachelor’s degree from State University of New York at Geneseo, a master’s in education from the University of Vermont in Burlington, and a doctorate in education from Syracuse University. Prior to coming to Elon, he was provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse. President Lambert’s greatest honor in life, in collaboration with his wife Laurie, has been the privilege of parenting two daughters, Callie, a student at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, and Mollie, a student at Furman University.

Dr. Gerald (Gerry) Francis assumed the role of Executive Vice President of Elon University in 2009. Francis received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from Appalachian State University, where he was a mem-ber of the basketball team. He earned a doctorate in mathematics at Virginia Polytechnic Institute (Virginia Tech). Francis came to Elon in 1974 as an assistant professor in the department of mathematics. During his tenure, he received the Daniels-Danieley Award as Elon’s most outstanding teacher. In 1983,

he joined the administrative ranks as dean of academic affairs, and was later named vice president before assuming the role of provost in 1994. During his years at Elon, the institu-tion has doubled in size, increased qual-ity among faculty and students and made substantial facilities improvements. Francis is a native of Arlington, Va., and is married to Burlington native Laine Neese Francis. His daughter Kristen and her husband James McCarthy are both Elon alums and have two children, Jay and Gerry, and reside in Elon.

Dave Blank begins his fourth year as the Elon University Director of Athletics for the 2009-10 campaign, following another year of notable improvement for the Phoenix in terms of athletic success, academic progress, marketing and fundraising. During his first three years at Elon, he ignited ambitious expansions in the Department of Athletics – including a restructuring of the Phoenix Club with emphasis on funding scholarships for student-athletes, a restructuring of the academic assistance program for athletics in conjunction with the Office of the Provost, and a plan for future facility improvements, including an already completed renovation of the Latham Park baseball facility, permanent bleachers for soccer, a state-of-the-art golf practice facility, and an in-progress field house at the North Athletics Complex. In June 2008, Blank was appointed to serve on the NCAA Division I Championships/Sports Management Cabinet – a 31-member cabinet that will help shape the future of Division I athletics. During the 2008-09 campaign, five Phoenix squads earned higher league finishes than they had in the previous year. The Phoenix captured regular-season Southern Conference titles in both men’s soccer and baseball with the baseball squad advancing to its third NCAA regional appearance in the past four seasons. The men’s tennis team fell just one win shy of a berth into NCAA play, but saw its first-ever individuals earn spots into the post-season tournament. In 2007-08, 12 of Elon’s 16 sports programs finished higher in the Southern Conference than the previous year. The Phoenix baseball team went on to claim SoCon outright regular-season and tournament crowns en route to a NCAA regional appearance. Also, Elon fell just one victory shy of capturing the SoCon’s automatic NCAA postseason bid in football, men’s basketball and men’s tennis.

During the 2006-07 season, Elon notched its first winning record in men’s soccer at the Division I level and posted SoCon outright regular-season and tournament titles and an NCAA postseason appearance in men’s tennis.

The Phoenix men’s soccer (2006), football (2007 and 2008), men’s tennis (2007, 2008 and 2009) and baseball (2008

and 2009) teams have all earned national rankings during Blank’s time at Elon. Blank became the Elon Director of Athletics in 2006 after spending six years as the Director of Athletics at Drake University. At Drake, he directed an 18-sport NCAA Division I athletics program that competes in the Missouri Valley Conference. He was responsible for the creation of a comprehensive academic assistance program. During his tenure, Drake student-athletes consistently posted a combined grade point average of 3.0 or above. Also, Blank oversaw the addition of the women’s crew, women’s golf and women’s soccer programs at Drake. Facility enhancements were a priority, including upgrades in the softball complex, renovation of the strength and conditioning facilities and new locker rooms for several sports. Under Blank’s guidance, Drake completed a $17 million renovation of Drake Stadium, which hosts football, soccer, and track and field events as well as the nationally known Drake Relays. Blank has served as a member of the NCAA I-AA Governance and Football Issues Committees. In 2005, he received Gen. Robert R. Neyland Outstanding Athletics Director accolades from the All-American Football Foundation. Prior to 2000, Blank worked at Coastal Carolina University where he served as Assistant/Associate Director of Athletics for three years (1996-99) and Director of Athletics for one year (1999-2000). While at Coastal Carolina, Blank spearheaded efforts to raise more than $4 million to establish an intercollegiate football program at the university, which began play in 2003.

“Our athletic department here at Elon is committed to ensuring that our student-athletes have a quality experience — one that affords them opportunities to compete for championships while pursuing gradua-tion at one of the best universities in the country.”

Phoenix Club Phoenix Club donors provide annual scholarship support that enables student-athletes to succeed not only in the South-ern Conference, but also in the classroom. Gifts have an immediate impact on the entire athletics program and on each of our student-athletes. When the Phoenix Club first began, Elon was 40 scholar-ships below the maximum allowed by the NCAA. Thanks to our many gener-ous donors, Elon has narrowed that gap to 32 scholarships. Elon has built an impressive winning tradition, capturing four national cham-pionships, more than 100 conference titles and 12 con-ference Excellence Awards — without the advantages of additional scholar-ships. Phoenix Club gifts have the power to take Elon athletics to even greater heights while giving student-athletes an exceptional education. Since the Phoenix Club orginated, Elon has captured seven regular-season championships in mul-tiple sports. Fifty percent of our student-athletes have a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Contributors to athletics have been among Elon’s most generous benefac-tors, providing the university with excel-

lent facilities, which have attracted out-standing coaches. Scholarship support is the remaining component to ensure that Elon sustains a winning tradition. To be successful, the Phoenix Club needs to raise $1.2 million dollars to fund scholar-ship needs. Phoenix Club members enjoy numer-ous benefits, the most important being that they make a difference in the life of

a student-athlete. Phoenix Club donors who make annual gifts of $1,500 or higher are also members of the Elon Society, the university’s top annual giving group. The IMPACT

Circle is the premier giving group of the Phoenix Club. IMPACT (I Make Phoenix Athletics Competitive Today) Circle members make annual gifts at the quarter, half or full scholarship level, set each year by Elon trustees. Donors may make a four-year scholarship pledge at a fixed amount or make gifts at the level set annually by the trustees.

“We are proud to support 16 men’s and women’s NCAA Division I sports, including over 350 student-athletes who are competing for championships every year. Our goal is to provide each sport with the full amount of scholarship funding allowable by the NCAA. Joining the Phoenix Club is the most important way you can provide assistance for our student-athletes and help in our quest for excellence in Division I athletics and the Southern Conference.”

Dave Blank,Elon Director of Athletics

Giving GuideEndowment GiftsMany donors honor family members, teammates or a favorite coach with an endowment gift, which serves as a lasting tribute to a loved one or mentor. Phoenix Club donors may endow an ath-letic scholarship over a five-year pledge period.

Endowment gifts generate annual earn-ings that ensure the university’s long-term success and enable Elon Athletics to fund scholarships that will have a lasting impact on student-athletes. Elon has more than 70 endowed scholarships, totaling approximately $4 million.

Matching GiftsMany companies will match an em-ployee’s charitable contribution, often doubling or even tripling the amount of the original gift. Contact your employer’s human resources department to find out more about its matching gift policy.

Ways to GiveTax-deductible gifts to the Phoenix Club may be made by cash, check (made pay-able to the Phoenix Club), credit card (Visa, MasterCard, Discover or American Express), electronic funds transfer (one-time or recurring drafts) or transfer of stocks and securities.
