Welcome to the 2010 Dave Harris Memorial Charity Billfish Tournament! We are happy to have your company and grateful to have your support for our charitable ventures!

Since 2003, the proceeds from the tournament have gone to numerous charities. This year, the recipients are theChris & Caitlin Harris College Fund (to support Dave’s last wish for his kids to attend college), the MelanomaResearch Foundation (supporting skin cancer research; www.melanoma.org), the Anat Kah CommunityFoundation (a local charity organization helping poorer local kids; www.anatkah.org), and purchasing baseball/softball equipment for the local kids in Puerto Aventuras (Bob and Glenna Uecker have donated significant revenueand time to build a sports complex in the poblado). We are also proud to give clothing and craft supplies to thelocal children in Puerto Aventuras (please drop off your items with Bob Warmbrunn in Porto Bello Room #206).

Special thanks to Glenna and Bob Uecker of Capt. Rick’s (www.captricksfishing.com) for theirgenerous support and organizing the boat charters and softball clinic.

Many thanks also to Chris Tilghman of Harrington Graphics & Screenprinting (www.hgands.com)for providing our printed t-shirts and caps at a generous discount.

On behalf of the entire group, sincere thanks to the Harrisbrothers—Don, Dan, and Daryl—for making each of us part of thistrip/cause/family. A special thanks to Don for all of his hard work and commitment to making our five days together fun, affordable, and charitable. The planning process starts six months in advance, but all we have to do is stroke a check and get on a flight—Don haspretty much taken care of everything else. Don—A job well done!

As you know, this is the second year that the tournament has hostedso many participants, and we’re looking forward to a great time with our old and new friends and family. If you have any questions aboutthe tournament activities or accommodations, please feel free to askany of the Harris brothers. If you have any suggestions on things wecan do better, let us know. Have a great time, and good fishin’!

The original gang in 1987. [Left to right] Daryl Harris, Dan Harris, Jimmy Rains, Uncle Bill Rains, Don Harris, and Dave Harris

Here we are once again—all of you preparing for another memorable trip to Puerto

Aventuras. It is, without a doubt, one of the highlights of the year for many of you. I

know it was for Dave. It was a special time for him to reconnect with his brothers and with

old friends.

It has already been over two years since we lost Dave. In some respects, it seems like an

eternity since Dave was a part of this life. In other respects, it feels like time is passing too

quickly when I look at the children and see how they are developing and maturing—each of

them becoming more independent and at peace with this new life of ours.

Christopher is now 11 years old and doing very well in school. He continues to excel in

basketball and track and field, and has recently started taking a dance class. He actually

even did a 5k race with me in November and loved it! Christopher has certainly risen to the

challenge of being the man of the house and is very diligent about chores and helping me

with anything that I ask of him. It won’t be long before he’s off to college to pursue his

dream of becoming an architectural engineer. Dave would be very proud of him. By the way,

he looks exactly like Dave as a young boy.

Caitlin turned 7 this past October and is quite the companion to me as well. She is meticulous about her

appearance, her room, and her work at school. She is the tallest but the youngest in her class and does very

well academically. Her love for animals continues to grow stronger every day, and she has expressed a desire to

go to UC Davis to become a veterinarian. Her favorite activities are her dance class, basketball, and being with

her friends. She has matured so quickly that it’s almost hard to see the little girl in her at times. Caitlin has

given me an inordinate amount of help this last year in the house and tries to keep us all organized.

As far as how I am progressing, let’s just say I’m a work in progress. I’m doing so much better emotionally

and finally feel like things are starting to settle down. The holidays and special occasions are

still extremely

difficult, but are becoming more manageable as time goes on.

I began working part-time in December for Dave’s company, FAFCO, as a Market Research Analyst. I work

from home, so the flexibility is ideal for my particular situation and the work is enjoyable and challenging. It’s

also great to give back to his company in some small way for everything they’ve done for us as a family.

The kids and I are still in the house and probably will be until the market turns around. I am very fortunate

that it didn’t sell after Dave passed away because we needed that time to just heal without any undue stress.

We will certainly downsize when the time is right and will hopefully stay in the same neighborhood. That would

make us all happy.

Even though it’s been almost 2½ years, the time is still not right to entertain the idea of having someone else in

our lives. I know the kids want and deserve a second father to love them and to take care of them, but that

time has not come. Whoever that person is, they will be there for us when the time is right. Dave made me

promise that this person would love his kids unconditionally and without exception. There is no questi

on that I

would honor his wishes.Lastly, I would like to thank everyone for their

continued support of my family.

There are so many people that still maintain constant communication and help me

both physically and emotionally. I am so grateful that Dave’s friends and family

have continued to take us under their wings and be a presence in our lives.

Please enjoy your time in Mexico, and thank you for participating in this event to

honor his memory. This tournament was very near and dear to Dave’s heart and

he longed for the day when he could take his own son to share in this tradition.

Dianne, Christopher, and Caitlin Harris

Dave and his family

Christopher and Caitlin, 2009

IN THE MID-1980s, Dan Harris was on a cruise with a stop in Cozumel,Mexico. While there, he talked to a mate on a sport fishing boat who told himthey were catching 15 to 20 sailfish per day. The wheels started turning . . .

The next year, the Harris brothers and their father returned to fish the waters ofthe Yucatan Peninsula. The year after, they decided to invite more family andfriends, and this became the beginning of the tournament we have today.

With the recession of the early 1990s, the Mexico fishing trips ceased asmoney became tight. In 2003, the trip was restarted in a tournament formatwith proceeds going to numerous charities, including St. Jude’s Children’sHospital, The Little Yellow School House (a school for mentally challengedchildren in Isla Mujeres), the rebuilding of a playground in the town of PuertoAventuras, new chairs and tables at a local Puerto Aventuras elementary school, and many more.

The first home of the tournament was Isla Mujeres. Later, the tournament was moved to its current location,Puerto Aventuras.

In late 2006, we were all saddened to find out that Dave Harris was diagnosed with melanoma. After a brave fight,Dave passed away in 2008, and the tournament was renamed in his honor. Fortunately, Dave was able to be apart of the 2003 through 2006 trips. He was a great fishing buddy and always had a welcoming smile.

IN DAVE’S HONOR, we are continuing the annual fishingtournament and charitable projects, and welcome everyone who would like to participate.

Puerto AventurasPuerto Aventuras is a world-renowned spot for fishing, scuba diving, swimming with dolphins, sailing, and golf, but the number one activity is relaxation. The developmentincludes protected bays and an inlet, all covered by powder-white sand. Located in the heart of the Riviera Maya on theMexican Caribbean, it is close to Mayan ruins, eco-parks,fine dining, and shopping.

INTERNET/E-MAIL The condos are hard-wired forInternet access if you bring your laptop. There arealso places in PA to access e-mail at a low cost, and some restaurants have wireless Internet service.

AT DAVE HARRIS’ FUNERAL, his brother Daryl delivered the eulogy, which we would like to share here for thosewho didn’t know Dave and those who loved him. . . .Have you ever met someone whot is left or right of the center norm?

The Dave and Dianne union started with: “IF SHE’S NOT PRETTY, I’M GOING UNDERWATER.” Dave Harris did not go under the water . . . it was a pre-arranged date. When Dave and Dianne first met, they talked for hoursbefore both going home to their mothers to declare: “I THINK I MET THE PERSON I’M GOING TO MARRY.”

The concluding days of Dave Harris’ life were very difficult . . . difficult indeed. Nothing made sense; no one couldcategorically explain how this “thing” started, how it could be controlled, or how long my dear brother had with us.

Our family came together in a dark and confusing time and attempted to find logic in the circumstances while weattempted to comfort Dave. That is where the irony played itself out—it was Dave who comforted us. Numeroustimes, the silence of the night was broken during each family member’s vigil by Dave’s sweet voice saying “Yep,yep, let’s go.”

Christopher and Caitlin—You have a dad who loves you unconditionally. He can’t be here now, so you must knowhis love for you is so great, that it will last your lifetime.

Dianne—You and Dave are a love story for the ages. Dave and I had lots of talks . . . even for Harris boys, it was a good amount of talking. Regardless where life leads you from here, Dianne, he’ll always be your soul mate.

Dave Harris’ positivity is absolutely infectious, absolutely genuine, and absolutely unending.

When you first meet Dave, the absence of any hint of conceit or any self-serving ego leaves you wondering ifDave’s was for real—oh yes, he’s for real. See, you had to reconcile the “Dave Harris Paradox.” On one hand, you have traits like his: compassion, fairness, trust, and integrity, and on the other hand, you go . . . ”HEY, WAIT A MINUTE, THIS GUY IS IN SALES! YOU CAN’T MIX ALL THAT AND SUCCEED IN SALES!” Yet, Dave did so withextreme grace and with the utmost respect.

They say “repetition is the mother of skill.” Dave is very skillful atdemonstrating, over and over again, an unflagging commitmentto whatever brought your paths together. That may have beenfriendship, it may have been business . . .it may have been both. When you crossedpaths with Dave, you quickly saw that he is the quintessential “intertwiner.” He’s a person who enjoys the journeyand the many bunny trails that come with meaningful relationships.

Dave, you arrived on the earth seven years before my birth—devoted son to a devoted mother, the three of us callyou big brother.

Our loving brother was taken from us far too soon, that leaves questions. I’ve asked God just a couple of thousandtimes, ”WHERE ARE YOU GOING WITH THIS?” My brother Dan hit upon it well enough: “I think God needed somenew marketing ideas and only the best will do.”

Dave, you succeeded in so many passions and remain strong in our hearts: • Son to our mother • Husband toDianne • Father to Chris and Caitlin (and Koda) • Brother to Don, Dan, and me • Great friend to so very many

Many cannot believe you’re gone, but you are. There’s power in numbers, especially when it comes to prayer. I would like to close with this prayer, if you would bow your head:

Heavenly Father, the death of Dave brings an emptiness into our lives. We are separated from himAnd feel broken and disturbed.Give us confidence he is safeAnd his life complete, with youAnd bring us together at the lastTo the wholeness and fullness of your presence in heaven,Where your saints and angels enjoy you forever and ever . . . Amen.

Money and TippingU.S. dollars are as good as pesos. Most stores take $, butcan’t always change bills larger than $20. Due to a higherexchange rate (roughly 12.5 to 1), you should exchange forpesos at the airport (not a great rate), a bank in Playa delCarmen, or locally in PA.

Most places take credit cards for larger amounts, but callyour company to let them know you’re in Mexico—many willnot accept charges for foreign countries without prior notice.

In Mexico, if it moves, you tip it, so bring lots of $1 bills. Yes,that even means the poor guy who drew the short straw andgot stuck with bathroom duty in the airport. They all work forthe tip, so don’t be a tight-wadded American.

Please remember to tip the condo maids. We usually do $2–3per person/per day. Just leave it on the bed each day (exceptSunday) if you are in Porto Bello. However, at Aventuras Club, you may want to give it directly to the maid (a long story).

TransportationTransportation has been arranged by someone ineach group on the list. You’ll need to reimbursewhoever has charged the van on their credit card. The cost will depend on your group size.

SunscreenThe sun is very strong in Mexico, so be sure to use sunscreen on any exposed skin . . . on the boat . . . on the beach . . . anywhere . . .everywhere.

COLONEL DICK HARRIS wasborn in Fresno CA. He had alove of flying at an early age,and owned an airplane beforehe owned a car. He was acareer Air Force man and adecorated Vietnam fighter pilot. He enjoyed the outdoors andpassed this on to his sonsthroughout their numerousmilitary deployments aroundthe globe. Dick attended thefirst Mexico fishing trips in the late ’80s with his fourboys before bad knees sidelined him. After a few coldones, you could always count on Dick’s dry sense ofhumor and quick wit to keep you howling with laughterin those old Cozumel days. Dick passed away in 2003.

UNCLE FRANK KIRSCHEgrew up in southern NewJersey near Philadelphia withhis two brothers. After severalyears in the Navy, he marriedhis sweetheart, El, and startedhis five-decade journey as asuccessful entrepreneur. Frank’sExxon station in Westmont, NJwas a landmark for 40+ years, and he operated “Cork & Bottle” liquor store for about25 years. He had one son, Michael, two grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Frank was a “man’s man”who everyone loved and respected. His passionsincluded family, fishing, and friends.
