Conner Burt earned All-League recognition and was a first team Academic All-American.

Matt Hedges was named Horizon League Defensive Player of the Year in 2009.

Julian Cardona finished second on the team in scoring and earned league Newcomer of the Year honors.

Bulldogs Primed For Title Defense For the first time since 2005, Butler will open the season as the defending Horizon League men’s soccer champion. Fittingly, it’s a position that was built on tenacious defense! The Bulldogs matched the third-highest win total in school history with a 14-3-2 record in 2009, won the Horizon League regular season championship and advanced to the NCAA Men’s Soccer Tournament for the fifth time in the program’s history and for the first time since 2001. Butler was ranked in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) national poll during the season, reaching as high as No. 17. Head coach Kelly Findley’s club finished sixth in the NCAA Division I in won-loss percentage (.789). Much of that success came as a resut of a rock-solid defensive effort. The Bulldogs led the Horizon League and ranked ninth in Division I in goals against average with a school-record 0.61 yield. Butler led the league in fewest goals allowed (12) and tied for second in the circuit in shutouts (8). Only one opponent, Ohio State, scored as many as two goals against the Bulldogs! “We defend first,” said Findley, who was named Horizon League Coach of the Year. “Our guys take a great deal of pride in making it tough for the opponent to score.” That pride will form the foundation for Butler’s 2010 bid. Findley lost leading scorer Boris Gatzky to graduation, but returns all four back-line starters, along with goalkeeper Fabian Knopfler. Junior Matt Hedges, a first team All-Horizon League pick and the 2009 Horizon League Defensive Player of the Year, will anchor a defensive line that includes returning regulars Conner Burt, Brett Heinz and Jared Isenthal. Burt, a first team Academic All-American and second team All-League pick, has started 58 matches during his

Butler career, while Heinz has been a regular in 59 consecutive contests! Isenthal played in 18 matches, including 17 as a starter, in his initial season, and he was named to the Horizon League All-Newcomer Team. Knopfler, who earned second team All-League recognition, led the league and ranked 12th in the NCAA Division I with a school-record 0.66 goals against average. He ranked second in the league in save percentage (.783) and fourth in shutouts (5). The Reutlingen, Germany, native enters his final season with the Bulldogs in sixth place on Butler’s all-time list with 10 career shutouts. Findley also can look to a pair of returning “redshirt” players, senior JC Aikenhead and sophomore Jordan Burt, plus newcomers Tom Markey, Jamie Vollmer, and Brandon Fricke in the backfield. Backing Knopfler at goalkeeper will be junior Nick Powell, sophomore Jon Dawson and freshman Andy Holte. Gatzky led the Bulldogs with seven goals and seven assists a year ago, and he finished his career in third place on Butler’s all-time list for assists (20), in sixth place on the school’s all-time list for shots (171) and in 11th place in all-time points (54). His role will likely be filled by “committee,” with several players taking on increased responsibilities. One of those players figures to be sophomore Julian Cardona, who was Butler’s second-leading scorer a year ago. A starter in 14 matches as a freshman, Cardona was named Horizon League Newcomer of the Year. He finished the season with six goals and three assists, and he led the league in game-winning goals with four. The Butler forward picked up valuable experience during the summer as a member of the Puerto Rico U21 National Team.

Also returning up front is sophomore Tyler Pollock, who started 15 matches in his first season and finished fourth on the squad in scoring. The 6-2 forward, who led the Bulldogs in shot percentage (.286), joined Isenthal and Cardona on the league’s All-Newcomer Team. Additional scoring punch could come from senior Dustin Mares, sophomore “redshirt” Blake Leyden and a pair of talented newcomers, Adekunle Oluyedun and Austin Oldham. Leyden is a former high school All-American, while Oluyedun and Oldham both played on USSF Academy National Championship teams with Carmel United. All-League midfielder Kyle VondenBenken, the Bulldogs’ fifth-leading scorer, has graduated, but seniors Ben Sippola and Kyle Pateros return to anchor a deep and experienced corps in the middle. Sippola was one of six Bulldogs to start all 19 matches last season, and he finished seventh on the team in scoring. Pateros started eight of 15 matches and finished sixth in scoring. Part-time starters Jacob Capito and Michael Clayton both return, along with seniors Troy Blewitt and Matt Sall and junior Lucas Eichhorn. Capito and Clayton each started 10 matches last ssason, while Sall saw action in 17 contests. All will be pushed by talented newcomers Adam Glanzer, Adam Tormoehlen and Joel Zimmerly. Glanzer and Zimmerly were teammates at Shattuck-St. Mary’s, where they helped the team to the U.S. Club National Finals. “We have a very deep team, and we have a great combination of experience and great young talent,” noted Findley, who’s beginning his fifth season with the Bulldogs. “We put in a lot of work in the off-season, and our guys came in prepared. We’re looking forward to the challenges ahead of us.”

Why Bulldogs?Prior to 1919, Butler’s athletic teams were known as the “Christians.” But numerous losses in the 1919 football season caused Butler followers to grow weary of that nickname. Dur-ing the week leading up to Butler’s football game with the heated rival

Franklin “Baptists,” Butler Collegian editor Alex Cavins and his staff, which included cartoonist George Kickson, decided something hot needed to be conceived for the school’s weekly pep session. About that time, the mascot of a Butler fraternity - a bulldog named Shimmy - wandered into the Collegian office. The idea was born! The next day, the school paper came out with a big page one cartoon showing Shimmy the Bulldog, labled Butler, taking a bite our of the pants seat of a figure labled “John the Baptist.” The caption was: “Bring on that platter, Salome!” (Butler lost the game to Franklin, 14-0, but the name “Bulldogs” stuck.)

Kelly Findley is in just his fifth season with the Bulldogs, and he’s already guided Butler to two of the “Top 5” men’s soccer seasons in school history. And he currently boasts the best winning percentage of any Butler men’s soccer coach since the program began in 1989! Findley delivered his third consecutive winning season and his first Horizon League championship in 2009. His squad became just the fourth team in Butler men’s soccer history to record 14 wins and tied the third-highest win total in school history with a 14-3-2 final record. The Horizon League regular season champion Bulldogs tied Green Bay, 0-0, in the championship match of the league tournament and then earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship. Butler won 11 of its first 13 matches, including victories

over #25 South Carolina and #14 Indiana, and compiled an eight-match unbeaten streak from Sept. 25 to Oct. 27. The Bulldogs cracked the “Top 25” in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America national poll and climbed as high as No. 17 during the banner season. In 2008, Findley guided the Butler to what was then a tie for the fourth-highest win total in school history. The 13-3-4 Bulldogs topped the Horizon League in wins and posted Butler’s highest winning percentage since 1998. Butler won the season-opening Louisville Tournament, became the first Horizon League team since 2003 to post an unbeaten (5-0-3) league record, placed runner-up in the Horizon League regular season race and earned a “Top 25” ranking in the national soccer polls. Among Butler’s 13 wins was a 1-0 victory over #4-ranked and eventual league champ UIC. It took less than 24 months for Findley to deliver a winning season at Butler. He guided the Bulldogs to a 9-7-4 record in 2007, the team’s first winning campaign in three years. The Bulldogs tied for fourth in the Horizon League with a 4-2-2 mark, Butler’s best league record since 2004. Along the way, the Bulldogs picked up a championship at the Courtyard By Marriott Flyer Classic and a runner-up finish at the Northern Illinois adidas/Baymont Inn Invitational. Butler ended the season with wins in five of its final six matches. In his initial season at Butler, Findley guided the Bulldogs to a 7-11-2 campaign and a sixth place finish in the Horizon League. overtime matches and seven of the team’s 11 setbacks came by a single goal. Butler won two of its final three regular-season matches, with the lone setback over that stretch coming to No. 20-ranked Indiana. Butler’s biggest win of the season came nine days earlier when the Bulldogs upset No. 17 UIC, 1-0. Findley, who was named the Bulldogs’ fifth men’s soccer coach in December of 2005, came to Butler from Charlotte, where he served for three seasons as an assistant coach and for two seasons as associate head coach. During his tenure at Charlotte, the 49ers compiled a 42-40-14 record, including an 11-7-1 mark in 2004. In his third season at Charlotte, the 49ers reached the finals of the C-USA Tournament for only the second time in school history only to lose the title on penalty kicks. Findley served as head coach at Mars Hill College for two seasons, 1999-2000. He guided the Lions to a 17-22 mark over the two seasons, including a 10-8 overall record and a runner-up finish in the South Atlantic Conference in 2000. He was named to Judson’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005. Following his collegiate career, Findley played professional soccer with the Charlotte Eagles for six seasons. He helped the Eagles to three South Atlantic Division Championships, five divisional playoff appearances and two trips to the national finals. Butler Bowl

The Butler Bowl, home to Butler men’s soccer, received a major face-lift for the 2010 season. Located on the northeast side of Butler’s campus just east of storied Hinkle Fieldhouse, the Butler Bowl project took a major step forward with the addition of new bleacher and chairback seats on the west side, visitor’s seating on the east side and a new brick press box stretching between the 30-yard lines. The new seats boosted the stadium capacity to 5,647, and the new press box added main level areas for media, radio, coaches and boosters as well as an upper level video area and observation deck. The renovation of the Butler Bowl, part of a plan to build new student housing along the east side of the stadium, began during the summer of 2005 with the removal of the Hilton U. Brown Theatre, located in the south end zone, and the demoli-tion of the east stands. A new fi eld turf surface replaced the former grass fi eld and a new scoreboard was added to the south end zone. The fi eld itself was raised by nearly eight feet and moved slightly to the south. The original Butler Bowl was designed as part of a massive project developed to give Butler University one of the fi nest athletic plants in the nation. Construction on the Bowl was completed in time for the start of the 1928 football season, and Butler inaugurated the stadium by defeating Franklin, 55-0. The Bowl opened with seating for 36,000 spectators. The fi rst major change to the Bowl came in 1955, when the Hilton U. Brown Theatre was constructed in the south end zone. The huge outdoor theater replaced 16,000 seats and gave Butler one of the premier open-air stage facilities in the Midwest. For years, the Hilton U. Brown Theatre served as the summer home for Starlight Musicals, which brought the best in off-Broadway performances to Indianapolis.
