2010 big 12 Football media guide
The winners of the North and South Divisions of the Big 12 Conference will meet in Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, to compete for the league championship and right to represent the Big 12 in the prestigious Bowl Championship Series (BCS).
The 15th annual title game is scheduled for Saturday, December 4 and will be nationally-televised by ABC Sports at 7 p.m. (CST). It will also be broadcast by Sirius XM Satellite Radio. The Dr Pepper Big 12 Championship will be played in Cowboys Stadium for the second consecutive year and in North Texas for the third time, as the 2001 game was held in Texas Stadium. The South representative will be the home team this year.
Previous years have produced some memorable upsets which have affected the college football landscape around the country. In four of the previous 14 championships, a team that would have qualified for the national championship game has been knocked out by a loss in the Big 12 Championship (1996 - unranked Texas def. #3 Nebraska; 1998 - #8 Texas A&M def. #3 Kansas State; 2001 - #7 Colorado def. #3 Texas; 2007 - #9 Oklahoma def. #1 Missouri). In 2009 No. 3 Texas narrowly escaped an upset bid by No. 22 Nebraska by kicking a field goal as time expired to win the game.
Since the first season of Big 12 play in 1996, the league has sponsored a championship game. Per NCAA guidelines, a conference with 12 members may play a 13th football game to determine a champion, provided the regular season is played in divisions.
The Dr Pepper Big 12 Championship Game has been a huge draw in numerous cities throughout the league. In the 14 previous editions, the contest has been played before a total of 964,947 fans.

Championship Game Quick Facts
FOOTBAll SCHedulINg & TIeBReAKeR INFORMATION
Scheduling: The Big 12 Conference is divided into two, six-team divisions in the sport of football. Each division will determine a champion based upon established criteria. All teams will play eight games as part of the Conference schedule — five games within the division and three games against teams in the other division. All games scheduled as part of conference competition count in determining the Conference record of each team. Rankings within the division will be determined on a winning percentage basis.
Divisional Champion: The (eligible) team with the best winning-percentage of all divisional members in its eight conference games is declared the divisional champion and representative to the Dr Pepper Big 12 Conference Football Championship Game. A team ineligible under NCAA or Big 12 rules for postseason (bowl) competition shall not compete in the Championship Game.
Divisional Tiebreakers: The following procedure will determine the representative from each division in the event of a tie:
a. If two teams are tied, the winner of the game between two tied teams shall be the representative. b. If three or more teams are tied, steps 1 through 7 will be followed until a determination is made. If only two teams remain tied after any step,
the winner of the game between the two tied teams shall be the representative. (1) The records of the three teams will be compared against each other. (2) The records of the three teams will be compared within their division. (3) The records of the three teams will be compared against the next highest placed teams in their division in order of finish (4, 5 and 6). (4) The records of the three teams will be compared against all common conference opponents. (5) The highest ranked team in the first Bowl Championship Series poll following the completion of Big 12 regular season conference play
shall be the representative in the Big 12 Championship Game, unless two of the tied teams are ranked within one spot of the other in the BCS poll. In this case, the head-to-head results of the top two ranked tied teams shall determine the representative in the Big 12 Championship Game.
(6) The team with the best overall winning percentage (excluding exempted games) shall be the representative. (7) The representative will be chosen by draw.

Volleyball does not sponsor a postseason championship. Big 12 titles for sports without round-robin conference play are determined by the postseason championship (Cross country, golf, gymnastics, swimming & diving, indoor/outdoor track & field, wrestling).** - Oklahoma won the 1996 Big 12 softball postseason title prior to the first academic year of Big 12 competition (1996-97); The final softball championship was held in 2010.
Big 12 Conference Sportsmanship StatementThe member institutions of the Big 12 Conference are committed to competition in an arena where sportsmanship and the sense of fair play take center stage. Whether on the field, within the community or in the classroom, those who make up the Big 12 -- its administrators, coaches, game officials, and student-athletes -- support the highest ideals in sportsmanship. At the heart of sportsmanship is the commitment of the institutions towards respect for the opposition and those officiating contests in the 21 sports sponsored by the Big 12. It is with a sense of fair play that a true sporting demeanor in the spirit of intercollegiate competition can be created and maintained with a total regard for the welfare of student-athletes, coaches, support personnel and spectators. Sportsmanship on the field of play is governed by Conference rules and guidelines, as well as those established under the NCAA and amateur organizations. It is the responsibility of game officials and administrators to see to strict adherence to these guidelines. The behavior of spectators is managed by event personnel, who are encouraged to deal with interference or abuse of appropriate sporting behavior in the strictest of methods. The Big 12 Conference and its member institutions appreciate the support of the majority of fans who wish to create an atmosphere of competition that allows the participants to showcase the game and their respective skills.
