If this objective is met, ASHRAE can do a better job of marketing to the end users of our technology, i.e., the building owners and operators who will look for ASHRAE trained members on their projects, both new and existing.”

Region IV Director and Regional ChairT. Randall “Randy” Jones

T. Randall “Randy” Jones, is owner and president, The Chapman Company, Mt. Pleasant, S.C.Current Service: assistant regional chair Region IV; member, Foundation Trustees As ASHRAE enters a new decade, what role will the Society play in the future of a progressive building industry?: “As the reality of truly reducing building energy usage and carbon foot prints sets in on the building industry, ASHRAE must continue its leadership role in providing reasonable solutions. ASHRAE, must use all its resources, including the technical committees, ASHRAE research projects, the Learning Institute and the expertise and experience of its thousands of members to analyze and develop cost effective systems that work in the real world and make these available to the entire membership. By taking advantage of these

resources, ASHRAE members will be the recognized leaders in providing these solutions. ASHRAE also needs to expand and promote the use of the Building Energy Quotient program. Building owners who are basing capital expenditure decisions on cost vs. return analyses must have a consistent and accurate means of determining the true returns of energy efficient buildings. When fully developed, the program must be simple enough for non-engineers including real estate, lending, code officials, and prospective investors to understand and integrate into their decision making process.”

Director-at-LargeHugh F. Crowther

Hugh F. Crowther, is vice president of engineering and chief engineer, McQuay International, Minneapolis, Min.Current Services: member, Standards Advisory Committee, Technology Council and Operations SubcommitteeAs ASHRAE enters a new decade, what role will the Society play in the future of a progressive building industry?: “The focus and attention that the public is paying to the impact the built environment has on the Earth is a wonderful thing. It is helping bring buildings to the forefront of the public’s awareness. What makes it really exciting for ASHRAE is we are the energy score keeper! Regardless of how energy gets into

a building—climate, solar, lighting, heating and air conditioning, etc.—it is the work that ASHRAE does to understand it and manage it. The upshot of all this is that ASHRAE, more than any other group, will have a leadership role in sustainability.”

Eckhard A. GrollEckhard A. Groll, Ph. D., Fellow ASHRAE, is professor of mechanical engineering and director of the office of professional practice, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Ind.Current Service: member, Conferences and Expositions Committee, Professional Development Committee; ALI coordinator, TC 8.11, Unitary and Room Air Conditioners and Heat PumpsAs ASHRAE enters a new decade, what role will the Society play in the future of a progressive building industry?: “Although there has been significant research and development of technologies for buildings, the overall rate of change is slow due to the fragmented nature of the industry, the lack of strong economic incentives, and the lack of knowledge by building owners and operators to use information and

tools to understand whether their building is performing well or not. In addition, the average life-span of buildings is in the order of 50 years and thus, it takes decades before the implementation of new technology makes a significant impact when it is only used in new buildings. Therefore, any effort to significantly improve the performance of buildings must consider existing buildings as well as new building construction. ASHRAE needs to lead in the implementation of innovative technology in new and existing building and in the education of building owners and operators.”

Charles E. Gulledge, IIICharles E. Gulledge, III, P.E., ASHRAE-certified High-Performance Building Design Professional, is senior mechanical engineer, A.C. Corporation, Greensboro, N.C.Current Service: member, Handbook Committee and BIM & Interoperability Committee ; ALI coordinator, TC 7.1, Integrated Building Design; Handbook liaison, TC 5.6, Control of Fire and Smoke, TC 7.1, Integrated Building Design, TC 7.6, Systems Energy Utilization, TC 7.7, Testing and Balancing and TC 9.10, Laboratory Systems. Gulledge also is an ASHRAE Distinguished LecturerAs ASHRAE enters a new decade, what role will the Society play in the future of a progressive building industry?: “The decade we embark on is filled with excitement and some trepidation. Long

desired solutions that deliver green, sustainable, high-performance and holistic outcome are now a reality. It is refreshing to witness an industry shift from silos of isolated specialization to one that explores and optimizes interdependencies. This shift represents positive and responsible change, but it is change and with change comes fear and uncertainty. Our greatest challenge and opportunity is to provide resources and guidance that promote fundamental understanding of interdependencies. Elegant creation of truly integrated solutions is our goal, and shared outcome is our new perspective.”
