RICARDO C. CARRASCO, PHD, OTR/L, FAOTA | Winter Park, Florida

Promotion of the Power of Doing inSurviving Life Transitions

Dr. Ricardo Carrasco has been devoted toliving and promoting the tenets of occupa-tional therapy. He has provided service to

the community, taught through universities and continuingeducation, conducted research, and developed a variety ofservice delivery programs, all with the focus of the “power ofdoing.” While his audiences are sometimes clients or occupa-tional therapists, they have just as often been business peo-ple, public or governmental officials, school teachers, otherhealth care disciplines, and family caregivers.

Dr. Carrasco’s reach has been local, national, and interna-tional. He has worked as an educator, researcher, or consult-ant, but moved beyond those roles, always maintaining theposture and activity of an occupational therapist serving thecommunity. He has served in numerous volunteer leadershiproles.

Dr. Carrasco has used purposeful occupation and participa-tion in communities to help individuals and groups achievegoals, improve skills, overcome challenges, and pursue well-ness. His occupational therapy pathways have included aHead Start program, Ikebana—the art of Japanese flowerarranging, a church wellness ministry, a sheltered workshop,a Very Special Arts Festival in Manila, and a program ongourmet food preparation for business executives.

Dr. Carrasco has knocked on big and small, familiar andunfamiliar doors. He has embraced the spirit of theCentennial Vision to make occupational therapy widely rec-ognized, science-driven, globally connected, and meetingsociety’s occupational needs.

BEATRIZ C. ABREU, PHD, OTR, FAOTA | Galveston, Texas

Promotion of Clinical Practice andCollaborative Research

Dr. Beatriz Abreu has made a significantand sustained impact in the development ofscholarship within occupational therapy by

exemplifying a high degree of excellence in clinical practice,education, and research. She successfully developed andtransferred research knowledge to practitioners and con-sumers who can inform, change, and promote progress incognitive disability policy and practice. The QuadraphonicApproach, a theoretically based approach, has received criticalacclaim and is widely used as the standard for cognitiverehabilitation. The approach has influenced the rehabilitation,health, and well-being of adults with cognitive disabilities aswell as the practice of occupational therapy for cognitiverehabilitation clinicians and managers. Dr. Abreu’s career hasunfolded while working alongside clinicians and consumersthroughout her 42 years as an occupational therapist.

NANCY RICHMAN, OTR/L, FAOTA | Highland Park, Illinois

Increased Occupational TherapyRecognition in Medicare Policy

Nancy Richman has made significant con-tributions to the visibility and credibility ofoccupational therapy in the public policy

arena on behalf of the American Occupational TherapyAssociation (AOTA) and the profession. Nancy currentlyrepresents AOTA in two different outcome studies and hasincreased occupational therapy recognition in Medicare policy through her work on an expert panel with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Nancy’s participation inthese studies has been, and will continue to be, critical tosustaining and enhancing access, coverage, and payment for occupational therapy under Medicare Part B. NancyRichman’s advocacy efforts are important not only to thestature of AOTA and occupational therapy, but also to individual therapists in practice and research.

DAN MARINO FOUNDATION | Weston, Florida

Significant Contributions to Autism Research and Treatment

Dan Marino is an American Hall of Fame quarterback whois being recognized for his off-the-football-field contributionsto society. He has worked to support efforts to advanceknowledge and skills related to research and services forindividuals with autism and other developmental disabilities.The Dan Marino Foundation was established in 1992 to support medical research, treatment, and outreach programsfor children with disabilities and chronic illnesses. To date,his foundation has raised over $22 million. He was instru-mental in helping to pass a certification program in the stateof Florida for swimming instructors working with childrenwith developmental disabilities, to help protect and ensuretheir safety in the water. He has made significant contribu-tions to help children, youth, and families facing develop-mental disorders, including autism. His leadership has led to improvements in policy, health, and rehabilitation, including occupational therapy. His leadership and effortshave greatly benefited the lives of others. We thank you foryour outstanding contributions. Congratulations to Mr. DanMarino, NFL Hall of Fame quarterback and recipient of theAOTA Health Advocate Award.

LAWRENCE M. NELSON, MD, CAPT, U.S. PUBLIC HEALTH

Leadership in Comprehensive InterdisciplinaryIntervention for Women’s Health

Dr. Nelson has had a very productive careeras it pertains to advocacy for women’shealth and occupational therapy researchand clinical intervention. His foresight andcommitment to healthy adjustment forwomen with primary ovarian insufficiency

led to the development and investigation of occupationaltherapy’s role in fostering adaptation to and compensationfor the physical, social, and emotional losses associated withreproductive health. Dr. Nelson’s lifelong efforts to promotethe health of women who experience challenges to reproduc-tive health have been an inspiration to occupational therapy.More importantly, his efforts have validated the need for acomprehensive, interdisciplinary perspective on compensat-ing for the devastating loss of motherhood. The AmericanOccupational Therapy Association is honored to recognizeDr. Nelson for his leadership in comprehensive, interdiscipli-nary intervention for women’s health.

WILLIAM W. OWENS, CGR, CAPS | Powell, Ohio

Leadership in Aging-In-Place Remodeling and Education

William “Bill” Owens is a leader in design-ing, building, and remodeling homes forthose who choose to age in place. He wasinstrumental in working with AARP todevelop standards to train remodelers, gen-eral contractors, designers, architects, and

health care consultants, including occupational therapists.With collaboration from the National Association of HomeBuilders (NAHB) and AARP, he was able to establish a training curriculum with the designation of Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS). This curriculum emphasizes thevaluable contributions of occupational therapists. Owens has presented with AARP, NAHB, and AOTA at numerousconferences and shows. He advocates for collaboration andcommunication among these professionals in order to helpcreate homes that allow people to live in their homes moresafely and independently. He is visionary in his recognitionand contribution to the movement of health care into thehome and community, and the creation of safe and attractivespaces for ease of use by all.

Improvement of the Homes and Lives of Homeowners in Need

Rebuilding Together is the nation’s leading nonprofit organi-zation comprised of a network of more than 200 affiliatesworking to preserve affordable homeownership and revitalizecommunities through free home modification and repairs forlow-income homeowners. Rebuilding Together has increas-ingly recognized the valuable contributions that occupationaltherapy practitioners and students bring to their local affili-ates because of their knowledge and expertise in aging, dis-ability, accessibility, and environmental fit. Affiliates havecompleted thousands of home modifications by makingchanges such as installing wheelchair ramps, grab bars, andrailings; widening doors; and refitting bathrooms for easieraccess and greater safety. The American OccupationalTherapy Association commends Rebuilding Together for itsmission and actions on behalf of low-income homeowners—allowing them to live safely and independently in theirhomes and actively participate in their communities.

“Occupational Therapy and the JournalCitation Reports: 10-Year PerformanceTrajectories,” published in the 2009January/February issue of the AmericanJournal of Occupational Therapy.

Holguin has highlighted the importance of journal impactfactors and their influence on a profession’s ability to receivegovernment funding for research to develop and test practice.Without research demonstrating this demanded evidence,professions become excluded by reimbursers, legislators, and administrators. Holguin’s message is clear, critical, andtimely. His call for action and suggested resolutions are wellthought out and feasible, and hold the potential to truly aid the profession. The insight and sagacity that Holguin demonstrates in this research paper are rare for a first-timeand single contributor to AJOT.

LESLIE L. JACKSON, MED, OT, FAOTA | Lemont, Illinois

For the article, “Inclusive Care and Education:An Opportunity for Occupational Therapy,”published in the September 28, 2009, issueof OT Practice.

By drawing on her deep knowledge of early intervention services, Jackson establishes a foundation for the unique role of occupational therapy in helping young children with disabilitiesto participate in everyday activities and routines. She uses herexpertise in federal policy to demonstrate practitioners’ roles insupporting programs to provide quality, inclusive services thatwill produce positive outcomes in all aspects of developmentand learning. Her approach shows readers how to use theirmanagement and leadership skills to create better access tooccupational therapy services by families and caregivers ofyoung children with disabilities, while demonstrating the value of the profession to other professionals.

JOAN C. ROGERS, PHD, OTR/L, FAOTA | Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Dr. Joan Rogers received a BS in Biology fromCanisius College in Buffalo, New York, andearned her MA in Occupational Therapy fromthe University of Southern California. She earnedher PhD in Educational Psychology—Life-SpanHuman Development—from the University of

Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Rogers is Professor and Chair ofthe Department of Occupational Therapy within the University ofPittsburgh School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences (SHRS).She also holds professorships in the Department of Psychiatry andin the School of Nursing, and serves as a faculty member in theInstitute for Regenerative Medicine.

Dr. Rogers has held numerous positions in AOTA and AOTF,including service on the AOTA Board of Directors and theEditorial Review Boards of AJOT and OTJR: Occupation,Participation and Health. Dr. Rogers became a Fellow of theAmerican Occupational Therapy Association in 1981. She washonored with the prestigious Award of Merit by AOTA in 1990.In 1983, she delivered the Eleanor Clarke Slagle Lectureship,entitled “Clinical Reasoning: The Ethics, Science, and Art.” The lectureship was awarded in recognition of her ability to synthe-size skills in practice, education, and research, and her careerhas continued to reflect that synthesis.

Dr. Rogers is a highly regarded and productive scientist who hasbeen actively involved in numerous grant-funded projects rele-vant to rehabilitation and occupational therapy. Her work hasbeen featured in various publications for her efforts in studyingphysical, cognitive, and affective impairments in older adults anddeveloping valid assessment methodologies to measure outcomesof interventions for conditions such as arthritis and dementia.Dr. Rogers plays a key role in a rehabilitation science consortiumthat received one of the first NIH grants to support the careerdevelopment of scientists in physical and occupational therapy.

In recognition of her leadership and widely respected role inadvancing occupational therapy research, Dr. Rogers was invitedto serve as the Inaugural Chair of the Research Advisory Panel(RAP) in 2007. The RAP is a group of leading occupational therapy scientists who are appointed to advise the AmericanOccupational Therapy Association and the AmericanOccupational Therapy Foundation on matters related to researchdevelopment in the profession. Dr. Rogers’ leadership in this roleresulted in the development of the Occupational Therapy ResearchAgenda, a document that identifies research priorities and willserve as an important roadmap to guide the profession’s researchefforts as it approaches its centennial celebration in 2017.

PATRICIA L. DAVIES, PHD, OTR, FAOTAColorado State University | Fort Collins, Colorado

Dr. Davies has provided occupational therapyservices in pediatric settings for more than 20years, including public schools, preschools, residential schools, and hospitals. She earnedher PhD in neuroscience and developmental

psychology from the University of Wyoming and is currentlyan Associate Professor in the Departments of OccupationalTherapy and Psychology and is the Executive Director of theBrainwaves Research Laboratory at Colorado State University.Her research focuses on three goals: (1) to examine braindevelopment in children with and without disabilities; (2) to determine the effectiveness of rehabilitation for childrenwith disabilities; and (3) to determine if rehabilitation produces changes in brain structure/function.

Dr. Davies has published articles related to treatment effec-tiveness, evidence-based reviews, and measurement issues inoccupational therapy journals. Additionally, she has studiedsensory, motor, and cognitive processes in children usingelectroencephalography (EEG) and behavioral measures.The results of these studies have been published in journalssuch as Psychophysiology, Brain and Cognition, DevelopmentalNeuropsychology, and the Annals of the New York Academy ofSciences. She has presented her research at conferences anduniversities throughout the United States and internationally,and continues her work with funding from various sources,including the National Institutes of Health.

JOHANNE DESROSIERS, PHD, OT(C), FCAOT Université de Sherbrooke | Sherbrooke, Quebec

Dr. Desrosiers is Professor and Director of theSchool of Rehabilitation at the Faculty ofMedicine of the Université de Sherbrooke inQuebec, and a scientist at the Research Centreon Aging of the University Institute of Geriatrics.

Dr. Desrosiers completed a master’s degree in gerontology(1991) following 10 years of clinical experience, and a PhDin clinical sciences (1994). She is a national researcher atFRSQ, the Province of Quebec’s health funding agency.

Dr. Desrosiers has authored or coauthored many peer-reviewed scientific articles in international journals, and haspresented widely in the fields of aging, occupational therapy,and rehabilitation. In 2005, she received the highest award inoccupational therapy in Canada, the Muriel Driver MemorialLectureship. Dr. Desrosiers main research interests are relatedto the rehabilitation of older adults whose participation isrestricted as the result of disabilities following stroke.10

ROGER O. SMITH, PHD, OT, FAOTA, RESNA FELLOW

University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee | Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Dr. Smith is Interim Associate Dean ofGraduate Studies for the College of HealthSciences, and Professor of OccupationalTherapy and Director of the RehabilitationResearch Design & Disability (R2D2) Centerof the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Dr. Smith has combined his academic background in engi-neering, health sciences, and the social sciences to establisha research track and trajectory that combines and integratestechnology and its interaction with people of all levels ofability and disability. Dr. Smith’s research focuses on theapplication of assistive technology and universal design, withan emphasis on improving methods to measure therapeuticoutcomes for these interventions. Dr. Smith has generatedmore than 100 publications and national and internationalpresentations in venues within and outside of occupationaltherapy. In the past decade, Dr. Smith has secured anddirected more than $7 million in grants supporting researchand demonstration projects from industry, community,foundation, regional government and federal agencies. Dr.Smith’s contributions include the development and supportof important, informative Web sites that link researchersworldwide to assistive technology outcomes and universaldesign resources.

ERNA IMPERATORE BLANCHE, PHD, OTR/L, FAOTAUniversity of Southern California | Los Angeles, California

Dr. Blanche has made substantial contribu-tions nationally and internationally throughthe application, development, and testing oftheory in occupational therapy. She is a

renowned expert in sensory integration, neuro-developmen-tal treatment, early intervention, play, assessment, clinicalreasoning, and occupational science. Modeling scholarshipand best practice, she has mentored literally thousands ofpeople around the world to improve their therapy skills, and to build therapeutic practices, national associations for special interests, and occupational therapy and occupationalscience departments in universities. Dr. Blanche is also coinvestigator of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) R01 funded study on Lifestyle Redesign for Pressure UlcerPrevention in Spinal Cord Injury.

MARY L. SCHNEIDER, PHD, OTR/LHarlow Center for Biological Psychology at the University ofWisconsin-Madison | Madison, Wisconsin

Dr. Schneider is Professor of OccupationalTherapy and Psychology and investigator at theHarlow Primate Laboratory at the University ofWisconsin-Madison. For the past two decades,Dr. Schneider has studied the developmental and

health-related effects of prenatal stress, fetal alcohol exposure,and sensory processing disorder in a nonhuman primatemodel. She uses state-of-the-art neuroimaging to elucidatepossible abnormalities in neural processing related to sensoryprocessing disorder. Her rich clinical background significantlyenhances her research, which has been continuously fundedby the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for many years. Dr. Schneider is a member of the American OccupationalTherapy Foundation’s Academy of Research.

JULIA L. WILBARGER, PHD, OTRUniversity of Wisconsin-Madison | Madison, Wisconsin

Dr. Wilbarger is an Assistant Professor in theOccupational Therapy Program, Department of Kinesiology, at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Wilbarger is a widely recognized

clinician, educator, and scholar in the area of sensory process-ing/sensory integration disorders. She has more than 20 yearsof clinical experience as an occupational therapist applyingsensory-based strategies for treating a wide range of popula-tions in novel settings. Dr. Wilbarger has a strong commitmentto teaching and mentoring for entry-level and advanced gradu-ate occupational therapy students as well as practicing occupa-tional therapists. Her research investigates the behavioral andneurophysiological underpinnings of sensory processing disruptions in a range of clinical conditions including autism,developmental disabilities, and women with fibromyalgia.

Professor Nielson is nationally recognized for her leadershipin the profession and widely respected as an aca-demic administrator. She is a professor emerita,in the Division of Occupational Science in theDepartment of Allied Health Sciences at theUniversity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Dr. Farland served with distinction on the AOTFBoard of Directors as a public member from1997 to 2009. During his tenure on the board,Dr. Farland gave generously of his time and per-sonal resources, and executed his responsibilities

with distinction in many capacities. He served on theNominating Committee, chaired the Investment Committee,and served two terms as treasurer.

Since 2006, Dr. Farland has served as vice president forResearch at Colorado State University. Prior to his currentrole, he served in scientific leadership roles at the U.S.Environmental Protection Agency, including the directorshipof the National Center for Environmental Assessments. Hisvast expertise in research, on both national and internationallevels, as well as his keen knowledge of governmental agencies,has provided a unique perspective that has greatly benefitedthe American Occupational Therapy Foundation as well asthe occupational therapy profession. His commitment to therole of occupational therapy in adding value to the healthcare system has been unwavering.

NANCY TALBOT, MED, OTR, FAOTANorth Reading, Massachusetts

Nancy Talbot served with distinction as a profes-sional member of the AOTF Board of Directorsfrom 2000 to 2009. During her tenure, she servedon the Executive and Investment Committees, as chair of the Nominating Committee, and as

secretary of the Board. As an occupational therapist with a distinguished background as an academic administrator andvoluntary leader in professional and community organizations,Talbot brought a wealth of experience and insightful perspec-tives to the AOTF Board. Her support of the AOTF vision andmission to advance the profession of occupational therapy forthe greater good of society was extraordinary. D E S C R I P T I O N O F AWA R D S

Each year, AOTA and AOTF recognize and honor colleagues who

have made significant contributions to the profession of occupa-

tional therapy through an annual nominations process that

members are encouraged to be part of. Each organization’s

respective Recognitions Committee is responsible for reviewing

nominations and making final selections from each of the out-

standing candidates that are put forward. This tradition is a

source of pride within the profession. Additionally, it provides an

opportunity to increase public awareness and focus public atten-

tion on the contributions not only of individuals but of the pro-

fession as a whole. The following is a list of the awards and

recognition bestowed by the AOTA and the AOTF for which

individuals may be nominated.

AWARDS AND RECOGNITIONS OFFERED BY THE AMERICANOCCUPATIONAL THERAPY ASSOCIATION

� AOTA Award of Merit is the highest Association honor for anoccupational therapist. The purpose is to honor membersof AOTA who have made an outstanding global contribu-tion to the profession of occupational therapy.

� OTA Award of Excellence is the highest Association honorfor an occupational therapy assistant. The purpose is tohonor occupational therapy assistants who have made out-standing contributions to the advancement of occupationaltherapy.

� Eleanor Clarke Slagle Lectureship Award is an academichonor established as a memorial to Eleanor Clarke Slagle,one of the outstanding pioneers in the profession of occu-pational therapy. The purpose is to honor a member ofAOTA who has creatively contributed to the developmentof the body of knowledge of the profession throughresearch, education, and clinical practice.

� Lindy Boggs Award recognizes the significant contributionsby an occupational therapist or occupational therapy assis-tant in promoting occupational therapy in the politicalarena by increasing recognition of occupational therapy infederal or state legislation, regulations, and policies or byincreasing appreciation and understanding of occupationaltherapy by elected or appointed officials.

� Health Advocate Award expresses the appreciation of AOTAfor extraordinary contributions of national significancethat led to the advancement of health promotion, healthcare, or both.

� Terry Brittell OTA/OT Partnership Award recognizes an occupational therapy assistant and an occupational therapist who, through their collaborative efforts to promote the profession of occupational therapy, exemplifythe professional partnership.

� AOTA Certificate of Appreciation expresses the appreciationof AOTA for extraordinary contributions to the advance-ment of occupational therapy.

� AOTA Roster of Fellows recognizes occupational therapistmembers of AOTA who, with their knowledge and expert-ise, have made a significant contribution to the continuingeducation and professional development of members of theAssociation.

� AOTA Roster of Honor recognizes occupational therapyassistant members of AOTA who, with their knowledgeand expertise, have made a significant contribution to thecontinuing education and professional development ofmembers of the Association.

� Recognition of Achievement Award recognizes occupationaltherapists and occupational therapy assistants who havemade notable contributions to the profession and its con-sumers in a focused area of occupational therapy practice.

� AOTA Service Commendation recognizes individual mem-bers of AOTA who have provided service to the Associationand profession through time- or task-limited activities.

� Cordelia Myers Writer’s Award is presented every year to recognize a first-time author (sole author or first author) of a feature article in the American Journal of OccupationalTherapy published in the previous year.

� Jeannette Bair Writer’s Award is presented every year torecognize the author(s) of a feature article in OT Practicethat inspires occupational therapy practitioners to use theirmanagement and leadership skills to create better access tooccupational therapy services and to promote the profession.

� AOTF Certificate of Appreciation recognizes the outstandingservice of individuals external to the Foundation who havecontributed significantly to the fulfillment of theFoundation’s mission, goals, and objectives.

� AOTF Meritorious Service Award recognizes individuals who have made sustained and exemplary contributions in support of the Foundation’s mission.

� Virginia Scardina Award of Excellence, inaugurated in2004, recognizes an occupational therapy clinician who hasdemonstrated sustained commitment, excellence, and/orinnovation in sensory integration and brain–behavior relationships in the practice of occupational therapy.

� A. Jean Ayres Award recognizes up to two occupationaltherapy practitioners, educators, and researchers each yearwho have demonstrated sustained commitment to theapplication, dissemination, development, or testing of theory in occupational therapy.

� Academy of Research recognizes occupational therapistswhose exemplary contributions through research haveserved to advance the knowledge base of the profession.

� Honorary Life Membership on the Board of Directors ofAOTF recognizes individuals who have made sustainedand exemplary contributions in support of theFoundation’s mission.

� PTE Mary J. Bridle First Research Award recognizes andfosters scholarship in the occupational therapy community.The $250 annual award, established in 1993 by Pi ThetaEpsilon, honors the best manuscript for a completedresearch study that is initiated while the principal investigator is an occupational therapy student.
