Dear Friend of Goodwill,

“I had no idea Goodwill did that!” We hear that from many people we introduce to the various facets of our Goodwill. While most are familiar with our stores, few really understand what our stores allow us to do. They make it possible for us to advance the social and economic well-being of people who experience barriers to independence. Our community impact is about people.

In fact, we served over 5,200 people in 2010. We served 1,566 people with intensive ongoing services, up more than 7 percent over the previous year. In a challenging economy, we placed 341 people in community jobs and created 91 jobs for disadvantaged veterans. We partnered with leading businesses to provide opportunities for another 190 clients in our Contracts operation. Our Goodwill helped more than 3,700 families and individuals through one-time services such as a clothing voucher or recreational opportunity. Our nearly 400 employees, Board of Directors members, and community partners made all of this happen.

We served all of these people while having our best year in terms of financial stewardship. It was because of all these people we were able to have such a bountiful 2010. In order to continue that tradition, we’ll reinvest in our mission, infrastructure, people and systems in 2011.

You, our donors, our staff, our clients and their caregivers make Goodwill possible. Thank you for your ongoing support.

Best regards,

Dick SchwabChair, Board of Directors

Jim Truitt

Jim Truitt was told to make a choice: work or not. Fortunately, Jim chose work.

Though he lived just across the street, Jim was frequently late to his job at Snackers 2, the Goodwill-managed restaurant in Muscatine. When confronted with his attendance record, Jim made a change in his work habits and his life. He got his health under control, too.

Now Jim works part time in the wall coverings department at the Muscatine Menards. He even earned a customer service award for grilling 114 boxes of steak during a promotion. He’s making healthly life choices and is getting married.

He has graduated from Goodwill services and was honored as the 2011 Townsend Client Graduate Award winner.

Caprice Taylor

When Caprice Taylor came to Goodwill in 2009, the Marine Corps veteran was at a low point in her life. She was struggling financially, healthwise and in her family and personal life. It was time for a do-over and she found it through Goodwill services for disadvantaged veterans.

Caprice worked her way into a full-time position at a Goodwill store in the Quad Cities. She’s paying forward her experience by helping to mentor other veterans in the program. In 2010, she earned the inaugural Mike Townsend Client Graduate Award for having successfully completed the program.

Now Caprice is living independently. She has her own apartment, is working on buying a car and is looking forward to taking a vacation.

Page 12: 2010 Annual Report
