  • At the heart of every successful organization is a group of special individuals who inspire and motivate others to feel their passion. The Palace Theater is extremely fortunate to have several of these individuals among its community of supporters,

who proudly lead the way by engaging others to share their enthusiasm and commitment to the theater’s vision, mission and cause.

Vision StatementThe Palace Theater will stimulate a cultural and economic renaissance in the region through the celebration of arts, education and community initiatives. Revered as a

treasured jewel, this grand performance space will not only inspire lasting memories but will become the preferred venue for performers and patrons alike.

Mission StatementTo build a strong sense of community and an appreciation for the arts by

operating, maintaining and sustaining the Palace Theater as a fi nancially viable not-for-profi t performing arts center that provides positive artistic, cultural, educational, social and fi nancial impact to the Greater Waterbury area.

  • Leading the VisionDear Friends,

The Palace Theater’s 2010-2011 season was one of remarkable success. Despite continued economic uncertainty, the year was fi lled with unforgettable performances. Whether you favored the comedic stylings of Jeff Dunham and his suitcase of sidekicks, the oddly informative Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me!, the signature brass sounds of the band Chicago, or the landmark opening of the Spamalot Broadway National Tour, this diversifi ed programming – presented in the spectacular Palace Theater space – made for the perfect entertainment combination. Couple that with exceptional customer service, and we continue to position the

Palace Theater as the SHOW place in the State of Connecticut. With both pride and gratitude, we enthusiastically report that our organization has weathered one of the State’s

most challenging fi nancial downturns with economic disciple and success. Thanks to the determined efforts of the staff and board, we have explored new ways to generate revenue with a renewed focus on growing our annual appeal, and have kept a watchful eye on expenses without sacrifi cing the quality of our performances or educational programming. This unwavering commitment to excellence in the face of budgetary cuts has, and always will be, the focus of our organization, as we tirelessly work to further our artistic and economic mission in the years to come.

Of course, the continuity of excellence that you have come to expect from the Palace is due largely in part to the continued generosity of supporters like you, and for that we are sincerely grateful. We hope that the results we have achieved this past season instill confi dence within you that you’ve made a good investment by investing in the Palace… an investment that is good for our culture, good for our city, and good for the communities beyond.

    Sincerely,

Sandra Vigliotti Senich Frank TaveraChairman of the Board Chief Executive Offi cer

“The continuity of excellence that you have come to expect

from the Palace is due largely in part to the

continued generosity of supporters like you.”

  • Giving comes in many forms. There are givers of time, of money and of personal talents. Then there is the Palace Theater Volunteer Guard, an extraordinary group of dedicated individuals, who exemplify the Spirit of Giving by selfl essly contributing their time, talents, resources and beyond, to ensure both the day-to-day operations and long-term success of the theater.

This indomitable Spirit of Giving can be perfectly summed up by the Palace’s 2010 Volunteer of the Year, Betty Stotz. Logging hundreds of volunteer hours over the course of six years, Betty’s dedication to the Palace is such that when it became painfully clear she would need to undergo major orthopedic surgery, she still trudged her way, walker in tow, to man her faithful post until the day before her operation. Today, her enthusiasm remains as infectious and sincere as ever, and she never asks others to do what she hasn’t already done herself. By contributing to the theater’s well being on so many levels, Betty has made herself an invaluable asset to

the Palace, as well as an inspiration to the community in which she serves.

Yet, Betty is just one example of the 165 unique faces and personalities that make up the Palace Theater Volunteer Guard. Much more than ticket takers, greeters and ushers, these individuals are the theater’s goodwill

ambassadors charged with providing patrons exceptional customer service, which they always and willingly serve with unparalleled enthusiasm and the sincerest of smiles. Last year alone, the members of the Volunteer Guard collectively donated their time and talents for a total of 2,952 shifts, logging an impressive 14,000 hours of service over the course of just nine short months. Whether seating 2,600 patrons at a sold-out event, distributing promotional materials within their communities or organizing casino bus trips as a Palace Theater fundraiser, this incredible group of givers continues to go above and beyond the call of duty, all in a selfl ess effort to keep the spirit of the Palace thriving for years to come.

  • Vinnie Ingala, Holy Cross High School Graduate

Everyone has a gift. It’s the opportunity to share that gift, however, that makes it matter most.

As Waterbury’s center for the performing arts, the Palace Theater is dedicated to creating and offering educational opportunities that cultivate the artistic gifts of today’s youth, in addition to inspiring creative thought, positive self-expression and a lifelong appreciation for the arts. By offering this gift of opportunity to the local academic community, the Palace has, and continues to provide hundreds of students with a platform to develop and share their artistic gifts while enriching the community in which they live.

Take Holy Cross High School graduate Vincent Ingala. As an 18-year-old jazz prodigy who sings, composes, and plays an orchestra of instruments, Vinnie understands how sharing one’s gift can help the spirit soar. Through his involvement with the theater, Vinnie was afforded the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to open for Jazz legend David Koz and a few of his famous friends last December, an opportunity that has opened many new doors for the rising star, including a special guest spot

performing on the Dave Koz and Friends Alaska Cruise.

Providing a stage to nurture, educate and enrich the lives of young talent like Vinnie is an integral part of the theater’s mission. Last year, the Palace became the new home for the Connecticut High School Film Festival and High School Musical Theater Awards, two nationally-

recognized programs dedicated to honoring local students’ outstanding artistic achievements in fi lm and theater. In addition, the Palace’s physical and philosophical connection to the Waterbury Arts Magnet School continues to provide students with opportunities to attend master classes with industry professionals, like last year’s interactive workshops with the cast and crew from Broadway’s Spamalot. Add to that a technical backstage job shadowing course, a theater journalism program, and an art based character development program, and you have the makings of an exemplary arts and academics program that shines the spotlight on today’s youth while providing them with a proper stage to share their gifts with the world.

Supporting the arts is good business. Just ask local business owners Peter Albini and Dr. Robert Porzio, two Waterbury natives fi ercely proud of their hometown heritage and the community ties that bind them there.

From an economic and business perspective, both men recognize the Palace Theater as a tremendous neighborhood asset and have embraced the theater as their personal cause. Using their lifelong community connections to champion support among a myriad of associates and friends, Peter and Bob have helped raised thousands of dollars for the theater’s annual fund, in addition to sponsoring successful stage presentations like last season’s Tower of Power concert and the wildly received stage show The Boys in Concert.

From local entrepreneurs like Peter and Bob to corporate sponsors like Comcast, the Palace’s legion of business supporters are no strangers to rallying behind the theater’s cause. By sponsoring performances and concert series, purchasing tables at the Stages Wine Dinner, selling raffl e tickets to their business associates, donating goods and services to the Keys to Our Future end-of-the-year event, or sponsoring ARTforms and other major fundraising events, these 100 or so companies and grassroots volunteers collectively helped raised $506,000 for the performing arts center last year, despite the effects of a tumultuous economic year.

Yet, during such a time of economic uncertainly, one might question why local companies like Webster Bank, Bank of America, and Naugatuck Savings Bank remain so faithful in supporting the Palace Theater and its mission. The answer is

simple. As businesses, they understand that an investment in the arts is an investment in their community, one that attracts economic activity, supplements their schools, lifts their employees’ spirits, builds their towns, and in the

    end, makes perfect business sense.

Embracing the Cause“An investment in the arts is an investment in their community,

one that attracts economic activity, supplements their

schools, lifts their employees’ spirits, builds their towns.”

  • Richard Demsey & Kim Demsey Ariola, Demsey Manufacturing

Preserving family traditions has been an important part of theater ever since the character of Tevye fi rst sang about it in the Broadway classic Fiddler on the Roof.

While Palace supporter Dick Demsey may not sing about the importance of preserving a family legacy, he does lead by example, passing on the tradition of his philanthropic philosophy to his daughter Kim. As a family and business man, Dick believes in the importance of giving back to the community that has given so much to him, and together, he and his daughter have become a formidable family team campaigning for causes they believe worthy of their generosity. The Palace Theater is grateful to be one of these recipients and has dedicated the Demsey’s contributions to making the arts accessible to other families within the community, perhaps even inspiring them to begin their own traditions of support.

By supporting the Palace, the Demseys are a perfect example of how a family can choose to positively impact their community’s quality of life while enhancing its cultural landscape. As fellow Palace philanthropist Angela LaMoy recently said, “What is a city without culture?” Angela, like the Demseys, believes that investing in the arts is the most effi cient way to preserve a cultural heritage while ensuring

an arts future for other generations. Through the theater’s planned giving program, she demonstrates her dedication by contributing lasting legacy gifts to both the Palace’s Pillars Endowment Fund and Sustainer Campaign. In turn, the Palace has named its historic grand foyer in honor of both her and her late husband Raymond, preserving the LaMoy family name and leaving a lasting legacy that will inspire and impact future arts audiences in the community for years to come.

    Year in Review Highlights

NATIONAL SPOTLIGHT: Stepping into the national spotlight, the Palace was selected as the launch site for three major U.S. tours, hosting performers and technical crews as they rehearsed and retooled each show before its national debut. The tours included Grammy Award-winning folk group Ray LaMontagne & The Pariah Dogs, Lawrence Taylor’s dramedy Me and Mrs. Jones, and the Broadway musical Monty Python’s Spamalot.

THE PLACE TO BE: The Palace was the place to be for over 124 stage performances and special events, including weddings, proms and business functions. Welcoming more than 130,000 patrons throughout the 2010-2011 season, the theater boasted sold-out performance by The Black Crowes, Ray LaMontagne & The Pariah Dogs, Jeff Dunham and NPR’s “Wait, Wait… Don’t Tell Me!”

E-ZING INTO NEW TECHNOLOGY: The Palace e-zed its way into the new world of electronic media, launching a fully-integrated strategy that brought patrons an improved, interactive and customized customer service experience. With the introduction of post-show surveys, video posts, online polls and other interactive offerings, the Palace reached over 35,000 email recipients, 2,000 Facebook fans and 200 Twitter accounts on a monthly basis.

EDUCATING WHILE ENTERTAINING: The Palace Education Series helped make learning fun for over 15,000 students, grades Pre-K- 9, with its four interactive stage shows. In an effort to make arts education accessible to everyone, the theater also provided 1,339 underserved students with subsidized tickets distributed through the Ticket &Travel Subsidy Fund, in addition to affording 200 more with the opportunity to participate in four diverse, artistically and academically integrated after-school programs.

PAYING IT FORWARD: As a non-profit, the Palace understands the importance of community support and that is why it is dedicated to paying it forward. Last season, proud new partnerships were forged with several local non-profit agencies, including a highly successful Spamalot food drive in conjunction with the United Way, a Toys for Tots holiday toy drive, and several “Give Back” nights that helped raise funds for the WATR Sunshine Find, Waterbury Hospital’s annual t.g.i.f. Women’s Wellness Forum and the Republican American’s Campership Fund.

RAISING FUNDS BY FUNDRAISING: Special events like the Stages Wine Dinner, Keys to Our Future end-of-the-year celebration and the Annual Fund Raffle experienced an increase in revenue and participation in 2010-2011, raising $51,000 more in donations than the previous season. When combined with corporate and annual campaign contributions, these successful initiatives boasted a total of 2,523 individual gifts at end of the year.
